View from the away end – Tottenham Hotspur.

Ginola: Played for Newcastle and Spurs
Today we continue with our new feature ‘view from the away end.’ I’ve spoken previously to Nottingham Forest supporter Sam followed by Villa man Paul, today is the turn of Spurs fan Nick Bashford..

Spurs have no doubt had a solid couple of years under Harry Redknapp, a man who was once linked with the managerial hot seat at Newcastle. Harry was thought to be very close to taking the United job, but a last minute change of heart from Redknapp forced Mike Ashley to look elsewhere.

Of course Kevin Keegan was appointed Newcastle manager in 2008 following Harry’s rejection. Kevin’s second stint ended in tears as many could of probably predicted. Quite rightly Kevin wasn’t prepared to manage a club that wouldn’t allow him the final say on transfers. Makes me think if Ashley had of been successful in luring Redknapp to Tyneside he probably wouldn’t have kept him for long. Imagine ‘Arry with no spending money, he wouldn’t be too chuffed would he?!

Spurs are a club that we have a bit of a friendly rivalry with. Perhaps were a bit bitter about the whole Luka Modric incident where Luka was heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park and was allegedly close to completing a move to Newcastle before Spurs made a last minute move and pipped us to the transfer.

We seem to have been Tottenham’s feeder club over the years too. They love signing former Mags, which is mentioned later on in the article. Here’s what Nick, representing Tottenham, had to say.

How do you rate our fans?

Newcastle fans are certainly loyal, even when you guys were in the Championship your attendances were bigger than most in the Premier League. Just look at clubs like Wigan, they can’t even fill half their stadium.

If you could have any Newcastle player at Spurs who would it be and why?

It’s tied between a few. I like Jose Enrique, he plays without fear and has played against the best in the league and done very well. The only thing is I actually think Assou-Ekotto has done well at left back for us. I like Steven Taylor too actually, he’s young and still has potential. He’s one I wouldn’t mind in the Spurs squad. Ben Arfa also, but I’d like to see how he does when he returns from that injury.

Who is your favourite Newcastle player of all time and why?

David Ginola – class, touch, quality. I met him once and he’s a top bloke as well, I would like to see him have a go at coaching.

From an away supporter’s point of view what do you make of St James’ Park?

To be honest I haven’t been there yet, but I do hope to get there next season. From what I’ve been told it’s a fantastic stadium and has a great atmosphere. Perfect ground to have the 12th man behind the team.

What do you make of our business in the transfer market thus far?

Yeah, good young signings and you guys have been linked with good players who could have a bright future too. Unfortunately I do think the loss of Nolan will cost you some goals next season. I think his influence and leadership will be missed even more so than Carroll in the long run.

Interesting point that Nick, seemingly we are a bit of a selling club. We have lost key players, do you think Spurs can keep the likes of Bale and of course Modric has been linked with a move away? Every player has his price right?

Bale yes I think we will keep him here. We have shown a lot of time and patients with him through injury and loss of form earlier in his Spurs career. Modric however has maybe had his head turned, the fans and hopefully the manager won’t want a distracted player at the club so sadly I think he’ll go. I hope he’ll go abroad though rather than sign for a rival.

Yes, I can understand that. If Enrique goes I’d rather see him go back to Spain. Next question, What are your opinions on Mike Ashley? Rumored to be a Spurs fan.

If Ashley ever came anywhere near White Heart Lane I dare say the majority of fans would be up in arms. As a small shareholder at the club I wouldn’t sell any of my shares to him. He’s clearly a man who wants to make a profit rather than show any care for the club.

How do you think we did in our first season back in the Premier League?

By all accounts it was successful. Although I have to say I was sad to see Hughton leave and his treatment by the club after the job he did for you guys. Pardew though to be fair has led you to a respectable mid table finish.

Do you rate Alan Pardew then?

Well as a Spurs fan I was obviously upset about the whole Chris Hughton incident. Alan Pardew though did a good job at West Ham before, he has a bit of passion. On first impressions I think he’s done a good job at Newcastle.

I’m glad you still have good things to say about Chris. What do you make of his appointment at Birmingham since were on the subject?

Brilliant, I think he’ll do a good job assuming the owners back him and keep putting money in the club. I reckon he’ll get promotion next season.

Who will finish higher next season out the two of us?

(laughs) Do I even have to answer that question? Obviously us, if we spend correctly I think we’ll grab a Champions League spot. Next season we have to take fourth spot back. You guys might scrape Europe.

Lets predict some scores between the two sides for next season. What will the score be at St James’ Park?

1-1 I reckon and a draw would be a good result there.

White Heart Lane?

2-1 Spurs.

We have been your feeder club over the years seemingly. Here are a few players that have played for both our clubs. Please describe in one word?

Ginola– class.

Waddle– Skillful.

Gascoigne– Legend.

Fox– Consistent.

Jenas– Potential (he wasted it though).

Woodgate– Great (shame about injuries).

Bassong– Average.

Carr– Leader.

Sir Les– God.

So some interesting opinions there from Nick. He was certainly considerate whilst describing Carr in one word. I personally would of used garbage, but lets be fair he did have some solid years with Spuds.

Bassong is a player that many Newcastle fans held in such high regard during his time at St James’ Park, it was interesting to hear a Spurs fan say he isn’t rated that highly down there. Maybe Seb hasn’t continued to develop much in the past couple of years. Of course he hasn’t had much playing time in his defence.

I’ll continue to track down other fans and have a chat with them, the questions will vary slightly from club to club. Coming up soon is Liverpool, a club I don’t like much in truth and a club with a bit of a plastic fan base. The amount of debates I have gotten into with Liverpool fans over the years…….

On reflection of what we have been told so far the players mentioned as players other clubs would welcome at theirs are- Jose Enrique, Hatem Ben Arfa and Steven Taylor.

For me that’s one of the more important questions I’m asking people, I like to know who other fans rate. No mentions yet for Colo, Joey or Tiote, but hey there’s 17 clubs still to go. Keep an eye out for Liverpool’s view from the away end which will be brought to you in the next week or so.

Thank you to Nick for his time and opinions.Comments welcome.
