Will Dan Gosling make an impact this season?

Gosling - Finally fit and ready?
With so much hype surrounding the good transfer business we’re doing lately, it leaves me wondering where last summer’s exciting signing Dan Gosling fits into the clubs plans.

Last summer when we brought Gosling in we all knew that he’d be out until around January, but due to a couple of niggles since he has returned into the fold we have only managed to see three minutes of him on the pitch for us. Those three minutes were a pretty frustrating three minutes for all Newcastle fans seeing Asamoah Gyan bundle home a late equaliser. No fault of Gosling’s though to be fair.

When Gosling first came on the scene at Everton he showed undoubted talent, but the main problem for Gosling was that he wanted to have a set position and unfortunately for him Everton were using him as a utility man. However, after a bit of thought, I expect him to be very much the same at Newcastle.

That’s no disrespect to Gosling as there is nothing wrong with being a utility man, and if you have a player who can play right back, right midfield, defensive midfield and a standard midfield role you’d be silly not to utilise his talents. Alan Pardew has previously mentioned the need to have versatile players in your squad so he will be a fan of Gosling and the various different roles he can adapt to.

Also on arrival at Newcastle, Gosling spoke of his wishes for first team football but who could he replace? With Joey Barton rumoured to be on his way out of the club I feel he will take his position in the pecking order, but I don’t feel that he’ll be in the first eleven, well, to begin with anyway.

I personally rate Gosling and feel that he’ll be a very good player in the squad. I think that given time he will really stake a claim for a spot in the first team. Gosling is not necessarily very quick, but he has a good engine and will be able to get around the pitch and he would help out Cheik Tiote in the middle a great deal.

Even if Gosling is not a regular starter he will be in the side plenty deputising for the frequently suspended Cheik Tiote. Cover for Tiote is a must with the amount of time he spends on the sidelines suspended and the fact that he will miss three, four or more games while being away on African Nations Cup duty with his native Ivory Coast.

Gosling can also chip in with a couple of goals. His spell at Everton brought four goals from 22 league games, with the majority of them being sub appearances. He also scored a memorable goal for Everton against their local rivals Liverpool in the cup, so he’s no stranger to derbies.

There’s no doubting Gosling’s talent but the problem is after this bad injury is he physically and mentally strong enough to return and get back to his best?

I, and I’m sure all of us in fact, hope so!

  2. Lobacka – You may find he will get a start while the new boys find their feet.
They will have to push him for a place I think

  3. Depends on our midfield shape. if using a 3 man midfield he will be competing with Cabaye and Barton for the right side. If only two man midfield he may well struggle. Think our 2nd 11 not looking much stronger yet, but give it time.

  4. He’ll do really well helping Cheik out in the middle as you say….

Covering his 12 games per season suspension 😀

  8. off topic but… I would just like to take this opportunity to laugh at the fact that Liverpool have now spent 79 MILLION POUNDS on Carroll, Henderson, Downing and Adam…

    SEVENTY-NINE MILLION POUNDS.

  14. Just found this on the BBC Gossip Column as well:

“Liverpool are close to agreeing a double deal for Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing and Blackpool’s Charlie Adam. (The Times, subscription required)”

  16. Downing and Adam will be good signings for Liverpool. Oh to have an owner who likes to spend a bit of cash on players… Not that I think they’ve spent it wisely mind but their backing Dogleish.

Top six is going to be sown up next season, if we bring in the right players and don’t let the better players go we should really attack 7th.

  17. I reckon Gerrard will be gone in the summer. If anyone tried to get rid of Gerrard the fans would be in uproar. Dalgleish however….
Also, if they got downing would that mean they won’t be going for N’Zogbia?

  18. Stu though would you honestly be pleased if we had a manager who had spent £79 million on Carroll, Henderson, Adam and Downing? Can’t fault the owner, he knows nothing about football and has put his faith in his manager, I would love to have an owner like that, but I know if we’d spent that sort of money on those four players I would be extremely worried about my manager’s judgment. I think the wheels will come off for Liverpool sooner rather than later with expenditure like that – and they certainly won’t be challenging for the title. I could well be wrong but IMO £79 million on those four players is utterly, utterly ridiculous.

  19. talk on some other site that erding has sign 5yr deal after ashley flew in today, shite or not i dont know 😕

  20. I was never excited about the signing of Gosling. Cabaye is our best signing of the summer IMO. We also spent money in him.

  21. Yeah, expectations will be running high on Merseyside, got a funny feeling its going to go horribly wrong, HA!

  22. Devon – that’s what I said, I’m not saying they’ve spent it wisely, in fact I think he’s wasted money on Henderson and Carroll but the owner is backing the club in the transfer market – that’s what owning a club with a huge fan base is all about, not fcking about waiting to sell prized assets before buying.

  23. yeah same rules apply regards players settling in at the club.
Hope they bomb next season

  24. Dont forget liverpool got 50 million for Torres and got two cracker strikers for that so you cant realy count the carrol money. They have sold a few other players for decent money aswell.

      (Quote)

  25. Ashley will be pushing them for top dollar for Jose if that deal is to go thru.
    Luvly jubly 😆

  26. Santii – I’d say the biggest contributor to Liverpool spending is mainly down to them being effectively debt free and the fact they bring in double the money that we do each year.

      (Quote)

  27. Carroll 35 mil. Ba free
    Downing 12 mil Marveaux free
    Adams 12 mil. Cabaye 4.5

Think we’re doing considerably better than the bindippers in transfer market

  28. newcastle rumours site have took that erding signing back off must have been crap as i thought 😐

  29. @4411

The only one i would take is the Cabaye one and even then i would have to think about it.

Oh and if liverpool get downing for 12 million thatis great buisness for them.
