It’s tough being a fan…..

Mike Ashley: Do you trust this man?
One thing that has always caught my attention when participating in discussion or simply reading the comments from others on this blog is the range of emotions on display.

We all support the same club but everyone has their own view on all the events that unfold before us on a daily basis. Supporting the club aside, the other thing that unites us is the fact that we fans have been battered pillar to post over the past decade. Of course I could go back further than that, but where do you draw the line?

From the revolving door that our managers travel in and out of, to the players we have gained and lost, these are all things that have a detrimental effect on ones psyche. Recently no one has had more of an effect on Newcastle’s fans emotions than Mike Ashley. I don’t want to go over old ground as we are all aware of what has transpired with our much maligned owner. What I do want to discuss, and to get back to
my earlier point, is the mark he has left on us all.

I’m no shrink but it is plain to see from the participants on this blog what the wide ranging effect have been. Some live with deep distrust not willing to believe that the club wants to do the right thing and move forward. I can understand why they protect their feelings like they do. How many times do you get screwed over before enough is enough?

Others try and stay positive believing that good times are around the corner (whilst hoping that they won’t be let down once again). However, the overriding emotion that does come out is the humor. Maybe it is a case of “if you don’t laugh, you will go mad” but through it all there is always someone to lighten the mood and put everything into perspective.

To me supporting Newcastle is like raising a small child. You can have moments of pure joy but within the blink of an eye you are pulling your hair out and wondering what the hell you have done to deserve this madness. I guess my point in all this is through it all we still hang in there, week after week, year after year.

Who would be a fan of Newcastle United with all the drama that surrounds it? I know I would! Thanks to Aussie magpie fan for his contribution to this article.

  2. I wonder what the situation is with Barton though.

What if he ends up scoring 10 goals or more next season with the same amount of assists – would he win a new contract like Nolan did (but rejected) or would he still be sold?

I just wonder if Llambias/Ashley have a point where they would say “ok, we have to keep this guy”.

  6. batty,

you have a point. Drogba didn’t start professional football at a high level until he was 25 or 26 – that is a major reason why he is still one of the best in the world at nearly 33.

You can argue Joey Barton has had a good 2 or even 3 years off football since he joined us – it means outside his never ending foot issues – he is fit as a fiddle.

He isn’t in the same position of Nolan – Barton is just rising to his peak. Nolan is probably on the sliding part of his peak, going down now.

That’s why this 30 year old rule we have bugs me slightly. Not everyone’s body develops at the same rate.

  7. off topic but the fans of River Plate in Argentina must be well depressed now . They are the biggest team there and hold the record of titels 33 and they have just got relegated .

  9. I cant see how Barton is going to fit in next season. If we keep him i think its for a squad player and not a starter. I think he is one of our highest earners aswell and he talks some rubbish on that idiot site twitter so it makes sense why they want to offload him and as he said get a younger, cheaper, better version.

I can see why we want to keep him he was are conducter last year and would be an amazing captain this year but i dont blame the board for wanting him out, we mite aswell well earn/save some money on the trouble maker.

As soon as an acceptable offer comes in he will leave all this talk about him wanting CL football is just him bigging himself up he is no were near good enough to play for a top 6 team never mind the top 4

#Devastated to see him SOLD! #mejoseandjonasnext

‘I will tell all when the time is right, basically they want a younger, better, cheaper player…………cant blame (owner Mike Ashley) and (managing director Derek Llambias) can you?’ he said.

‘…….slight problem is, they dont want to spend any money or pay any wages. Its genius really ha ha

now i understand that some of that is probably true but its realy not his place to be saying all that on twitter and bringing even more turmoil onto Newcastle or is it his place to say that?

Agreed…it seems stupid to target 30 as a cut off…it means if we want to sell for profit we’ll have to sell them at 28 when they still have two years of contract left…Players can play for another 7 years after that depending on the individual and the position, its bloody frustrating. We’ve already seen trying to keep players for just a little over 30 is tough when they want to stay for longer, and Ashley and Dekka hardly strike me as men who would make a compromise easily, even a reasonable one.

  13. Santii @ 124 I sort of get what you mean but he could have said a lot worse, and I do think he was probably well pissed off with the way he has been treated.
But I do think he has came across well on the whole on twitter as I have seen alot of peoples opinions of him change. But he does need to be careful
