Have we built our hopes up?

Have we been getting carried away?
This transfer window is turning out to be a frustrating affair with no real news forthcoming about extra additions to the team.

We started off like a proverbial house on fire by signing three players in just over a week, but I believe that this is the cause of most of the frustration amongst fans.

People want more, which is entirely understandable of course, but it takes time and there is plenty of that left in this transfer window. I’ve mentioned before about the three players coming in being ones that were sought after or that needed sorting quickly, but for the rest it will take time.

There hasn’t been much action at all so far in this transfer window with the transfers of Phil Jones and Jordan Henderson representing the biggest moves thus far. It will change though and things will heat up, but for the moment the window is simmering rather than boiling.

I keep hearing people saying how it’s quiet on the transfer front. So what? Take a look around and you’ll see that it’s exactly the same everywhere else. Don’t get me wrong, people will quite rightly expect that team and squad to be strengthened, but I feel that getting Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye and Sylvain Marveaux in so early in the transfer window has left us kind of spoilt. We made our first moves a lot quicker that I thought we would in fairness, which has brought about high hopes and expectations for the rest of the window.

Unfortunately that takes us back to the general transfer scene though. As I mentioned earlier, it’s quiet, everywhere, with rumours being the main source of anything at the moment. The press are full of people “understanding” and “hearing”, but in the end it’s all just rumours.

So next time you bemoan the fact that things have gone quiet at NUFC, just take a look around – not many clubs are doing business currently. It’s quiet everywhere.

When does this domino effect come into play?

  1. 😆 So I see now, sorry fella, didn’t mean to jump the gun on the other thread, didn’t know you were writing this 😆

  2. I think we should maybe make one or two “lesser” signings, what does anyone think of that young leftback from Swansea?….Taylor I think he’s called 😆

  3. You know what it is don’t you, we’ve not in recent years had so much activity this early on in a transfer window that just because we have, we think it’s gonna carry on all summer, so when we get a lol in the transfer rumours & speculation, we feel as if nothings happening… it’s withdrawal symptoms, like being off the fags & booze.. 😆

We can still sign players, toonsy.

There’s a deadline for when the clubs must submit their squads and it we have too many we just leave some out. Really easy.

  5. Toonsy@3….we’ve still a couple of places left I think, if not then take Perch the vets so he can “sleep with the fishes” 😆

  6. The facts are we have 3 in and 1 out – if we’d done this over the whole of the transfer window we’d probably be happy especially with the fact 2 of the incomings are internationals in their prime (albeit with reservations over Ba’s fitness)
Things will heat up and I expect more outgoings as well as a couple more in

Ben Arfa is also back as is Gosling so in reality we have 5 players that we didnt have available to us last season

Would imagine there will be a bit of business next week, clubs won’t want to pay wages to players whilst on holiday so will sign them up and therefore be liable for wages in time for pre season
lets face it, if you sign 3 players in June and pay em 75k a week each you’re liable for up to a million for them to sit round on their arses

      (Quote)

  7. Stuart…The problem being that the fatman won’t pay out wages to players who aren’t in the squad so he’ll want them shifting out first I’d guess.

      (Quote)

  8. Stuart – You’re thinking logically. Now try thinking of it from Ashley’s view.

For reference, I agree with you and I’d do the same, but as I said in that linked article, I can’t see Ashley paying money (wages) for players he can’t use.

      (Quote)

  9. Its not realy a problem its common sense, would you pay a player 40k+ a week to do nothing? i know i wouldnt.

  10. Alreet lads,

See Stoke are going to Spend a hefty wedge of Dann and Jerome.

You mentioned a domino effect Toonsy?

I think we will see some of that money

      (Quote)

  11. Signing just one of Dann or Johnson won’t work. Together they were solid, but take one away and the other was shocking.

      (Quote)

  12. 16 million they’ve offered apparently, a lot of money that for two average players…

  13. TOONSY was just going to say that, yes that really stood out when one was oot,bit like toon when colo was oot 😀

  14. It’s the same every transfer window. We leave everything til the last minute and up with nixy. 😥

I’ve been away a bit, so have I missed any news on Erdinc arriving and Best leaving? 😕

  15. There is a bit of stagnation at the moment with transfers. At least NUFC has a fat wad to play with when the transfers start to really pick up

Only time will tell on the quality of the signings but I’m very happy with the transfer activity so far.

  18. Knowing Pardew he is probably sitting on at least one deal to try and make things more exciting 🙄 either that or hes doing what he did with Cabaye and not mentioning any deals almost done so no other teams try to hijack them at the last second, which is a good tactic i guess…

  19. someone on mad is saying the fat controller is in toon..
lets hope we get some news the day…

  20. I wonder who the favourites are for the sack in the upcoming season….it would be fab to see a list without a Newcastle manager amongst it…. 🙂

      (Quote)

  21. Hitman – He’s prob got fed up of Barton and arrived to terminate his contract or something 😆 I heard him, Carroll and Nolan were at Glastonbury

      (Quote)

  22. Anyway Pards has been on hol for a week and only returned yesterday so can’t imagine much happening when he aint here

      (Quote)

  23. Cheaper deals will be done early, gotta get in while we can, I believe a few cash buys will happen before end of august.

      (Quote)

  24. Haven’t had my hopes built up, I’m not kidded by this lot.

We’ll at best have the same squad in respect of quality and quantity (although last season our squad was skeletal) this season at worst we could be weaker.

      (Quote)

  25. I agree with Jay. I think the deal we’ve done have been the ones that we HAD to get done or else risk them not happening at all. Right now people are just eyeballing each other. It will pick up soon enough 🙂

      (Quote)

  26. Aye, toonsy but don’t forget the nearer we get to August 31st the higher the fee goes.

      (Quote)

  27. I don’t think we’ll leave everything that late, although god knows why I get that feeling 😕

I’d like to hope we have everything done by the last day of the window 😕

      (Quote)

  28. Just be patient guys there is still a long time left in the window. Pards didn’t get back from his hols till yesterday ! I don’t think there will be any more in until we get shot of a few players like ranger, smith, rout and possibly a few others like jonas. I would hate to see jonas go but as a player for us I’ve always thought something was missing with him (goals, final ball) but having said that he is a right sided midfielder playing on the left !! In summary I’m happy with the players in and out so far and will hold any judgment until the last day of the window holding a glass of JD to drink in celebration or dissapiontment 🙂 howay the lads

      (Quote)

  29. Didnt pardew say he wanted most of his deals done before we went to the states?

so that would suggest we going to finish our tranfer dealing withing the next 2-3 weeks. would be nice to not be fooking around on final day paying over priced fees.

      (Quote)

  30. Santii…..wanting and getting are 2 different things, just ask any married man 😉 😆

      (Quote)

  31. It is not three in, one out. Like them or not in addition to the popular Nolan we have also lost Campbell, Ireland and Kuqi from the squad and Smith and Best have been told to find a move. We have a long way to go to build an already weak squad.

      (Quote)

  32. Blaydonson…true but in real terms we have also gained Benny and Gosling….touchwood.

      (Quote)

  33. Blaydonson – In a way I agree, in terms of numbers, but if you look at their impact only one of them was a “first teamer”. Ireland made two appearances, Kuqi made six sub appearances, Campbell eight……

Are they really that much of a miss?

      (Quote)

  34. Seriously how much better do you think we can do, so early on in this transfer window… I am really happy with what we have achieved and we have spent nowt.. However spending nowt does seem to bother some fans out there.. 😕

      (Quote)

  35. Aussie – I always wonder whether some people would be happier if we’d have got the same three players for a combined £15 million. I wonder if it would have been viewed differently, even though they are the same players?

    You say;

Anyway Pards has been on hol for a week and only returned yesterday so can’t imagine much happening when he aint here

Jokin! Graham Carr is in charge of transfers! 😆

  37. spot on Toonsy…. it is a perception thing… when you get something for free, it has no perceived value.. If you spend a fortune on it, it must be good!! 😯

  38. @50

    Nothing wrong with that.

    @49

Its so sad but its probably true, thats what football is turning into 🙁

    ————————–

That’s exactly right and somehting we were all arguing about a few weeks ago. With some supporters, “good business” gets ignored in favor of “ashley’s cheap”. I think the latter is true to a certian extent, and we can agrue whether it is good for the club or not,. But we should appreciate good business when we see it.

  40. Spending a sh*te load of money doesn’t show intent to move the club forward if it is spent haphazardly. I sometimes think that some fans have been miserable for so long that they have forgotten how to be happy. Granted the last few years have been fecking terrible but you have to live in hope, not in the past..

  41. @54

I disagree the last two years have been good for the club imo we have got rid of most of the dead wood after relagation. This season we have laid a good foundation to build on for next season.

But since SBR left we have been on a steep decline which got us relagated a blessing in disguise imo

      (Quote)

  42. @55 – Totally agree mate…My last few years comment was aimed more at the years leading up to our relegation. SBR was a fantastic manager…. why he was sacked still baffles me to this day.. 😕

  43. I know as NUFC fans we want the world when it comes to the trans window but can any of you say you are unhappy with the start of this one ??? its starting to get old now seeing all the neg comments on these sites, Yes I agree since the chubby retailer came in there has not been much in the way of good news, however this window has started well for us and has gone a little quiet for a week or so, as it has for the rest of the prem clubs but Pards is back now and Ash is in town so watch this space 🙂 Yes im aware Carr is in charge of transfers but what player would sign for a club without speaking to the manager ?

      (Quote)

  44. The problem is if we leave it too late the desired players will have gone and we will end up paying silly money for second rate players just for the sake of it. We want to bed the new players in asap hence the urgency in getting what we want signed up. I am impressed with what has come through the door so far and more of that will keep me happy!

  45. Is that all you’ve got to offer then gimp?
    No Names or owt.
Smells like a stab in the dark to me.
Law of averages and by a process of illimination you’ll get one right. Well done. 😳

  46. The club’s going stateside soon and that trip’s a marketing exercise. We’ll be expected to do well against mediocre opposition and thus, pards’ll want some names to take out.
So? I reckon we’ll see some incomers in the next week or so…. I hope!
