Benny keen to don the number 9 shirt?

Reportedly keen to be United's next number nine.
One of the big decisions that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew must make in pre-season is who will wear the famous number nine shirt next season.

The shirt holds a lot of history and has been worn by some great characters who have done the club proud. The iconic shirt is precious to the Newcastle fans and it’s traditionally a goalscorer that wears the number nine at St James’ Park.

Since Alan Shearer retired and the shirt became vacant, two other men have attempted to take the shirt and, for very different reasons, failed to do the number nine at Newcastle any justice. First Obafemi Martins, very talented young man but very inconsistent and not the most prolific of strikers. The type who will score a cracker then miss an open goal.

Then came Mr Carroll, the local lad who was living the dream. Andy’s fantastic season in the Championship was enough to convince then manager Chris Hughton that this lad was United’s next number nine. Naturally Carroll was compared to Shearer, the local lad with a goal in him.

We saw Andy develop more and more by the week, constantly improving his game. The lad proved that he had bags of talent and seemingly the desire to pull on the black and white shirt and do the business for the team he supported as a boy.

We all know that Carroll’s resolve to stay on Tyneside was tested in January and the lure of Liverpool was something he couldn’t turn down. Maybe Newcastle were too quick to reward Andy with the number nine? Like I say his ability will never be in question.

I do however think that with talent you need maturity. Being the main man at a club means your idolized and an influence to your younger fans. Carroll was finding himself in trouble and in the news for the wrong reasons during his Newcastle career. Hardly an ideal role model in truth.

So the number nine is vacant again and it’s been suggested by some that the number should be retired, but Alan Pardew seems certain to keep the shirt available. So who gets the privilege and probable extra pressure of donning the shirt?

The Evening Chronicle understands that Hatem Ben Arfa is keen to wear the number next season. Pardew has already suggested that Benny will playing off a main striker next season, a position that could potentially see a man of Hatem’s quality bag a few goals.

Ben Arfa is currently owner of the number 37 shirt at Newcastle. Many readers have actually asked us what number Benny will be next season. It has been rumoured that he will take number ten, currently worn by Wayne Routledge.

It is interesting that the Newcastle club shop had a promotion on – buy a replica shirt with printing and receive a free match ticket. Surely the club would make more sales on the new shirts if they confirmed next seasons squad numbers? I think quite a few fans will wait until the numbers are released before purchasing the shirts.

They are probably waiting to see who comes in and who goes before confirming the players squad numbers. To be fair this annoys me because I would love a Ben Arfa shirt myself but I really don’t think he will be 37 next season either way.

The number nine is normally worn by an out and out goalscorer – is Benny the right man for the shirt? Or would someone like Shola be more suited? There are so many mixed views of Ameobi on here, but if you think about it do you think anyone in the squad loves the club as much as Shola?

I think it would mean so much to Ameobi to be Newcastle’s number nine and I think he would cherish the opportunity. Having said that, I thought the same about Carroll. Personally I don’t think Ameobi is number nine material, but a few have said they think he deserves a shot.

Who would you give the shirt to?

  1. Ameobi would be the very very last person I would give the number 9 shirt to. How on earth can you say he loves the club. He loves being at the club and getting paid what he is paid. If he loved the club he would put in a hell of a lot more effort than he has in the past. Would love to see him leave. At least we know we’d be playing with 11 men every week.

  2. Agree 100%. Be disrepectful to give such a special shirt to such a joke footballer. I’d be delighted to see him away also. Especially if he was to depart with the other half of a pathetic strike force. Mrs Lovenkrands.

  3. BOB-
he does love the club, but he lacks a bit of talent.
Personally I wouldn’t give Shola the shirt but a few said they would. These articles are to debate issues like this my friend.

  4. I would take that no.37 off him and offer him no.10 first.

But if he really wanted no.9 I would give him it. 😉 I think he is a newcastle fan, I can’t think of any other reason why such a good player has wanted to come here, had such a rapport (mes amis) with the fans and become an ambassador for us. For those reasons alone I say give him the 9 if he wants if. He is certainly one of the best players I have seen in a toon shirt and more worthy than players like Martins.

  5. haha edit, last part did actually make it sound like Shola has my vote, which he doesn’t sadly

  6. Well Pardew has said Benny will play in the hole and i see him being top scorer next season . The lad if fit is brilliant the best i have seen since Pedro was at his top in that position . The trouble is the number 9 shirt is for a striker , my question then is if he plays in the hole is he a striker that should wear the number 9 ? i say yes because he will get goals .

  7. I’ve already come to terms with the possibility of not seeing a number 9 this season… not something to give away willy nilly.

      (Quote)

  8. I’ve been thinking about this and I don’t think he has the physicality to be a Rooney or a Del Piero. Playing as a deep lying striker. He is more of a wing-forward like a Messi or someone.

  9. honestly would have a problem give the no 9 to Shola… before im slated hear me out !! i think wearing that shirt might just be enough to inspire him on and finally show his true potential we can all agree he has produced moments of pure genius at time … the no 9 could inspire him to produce it more often …

Number wise i think Cabaye will wear either 4 or 8…. HBA 10, Maver prob the No 11, Loven will be regarded as back up next season he is 4th in the pecking order as we stand behind Ba, Best and Shola an i dont think he should have 1-11.. Albeid will be a squadie till he develops so he will get a 28 or something depending on out goings… Taylor might get the the jersey vacated by campbell

  10. I would deffo give him no.10. I don’t want to see a no.9 next season it should be retired until someone really earns it. Im off, wiring up a garage tomorow, night people.

  11. I don’t know that anyone has earned the No. 9. Isn’t that what its really about. I’m excited about Benny playing this season but just because someone wants it, has even asked for it doesn’t mean they should get it. Maybe the 9 stays in the locker room this season. Someone will claim it with their actions for next season.

  12. I love that people are still saying “it could help him fulfil his potential”. He has had ten years guys. If he aint done it by now he never will and no one should get the Number 9 just because it might help them step up their game. Plus I’d like to see Shola gone so that someone else can step up. He has been stopping the development of our youngsters for years because he is always injured until everyone esle is injured at which points he comes good for a game or two then disappears again.

  13. Hatem is a number 10 or 11, not a number 9. That’s not his position, he’s a supporting forward not a front line striker. Certainly more an 11 than anything else to my mind.

As for shola, a front line striker he certainly is. Or is supposed to be. Sentiment wants me to see shola in a number 9. It’s not so important how well he does in it. It’s about history and commitment. And ability, of course. But ability by itself, for me, isn’t enough. The great number 9’s meant more to this club, this city, than how many goals they scored alone. Shola epitomises everything great and awful about our club, and indeed ourselves. Many a time have I slated the lad – we all have – but many a time has he done things that make you realise why he’s still here. That immense horizontal Kung Fu goal against the shite being a case in point. Or even the last game of the season vs west brom. I actually saw him run at and take on defenders in the box and get a shot away. Sure he missed, but that was a striker attacking defenders. Shearer never did that.

He has the ability. We all love to take the piss, but right now I see no one more deserving at nufc to wear the number 9 than shola. He might just make it his own. He’ll probably balls it up. I’d love to find out which it’ll be.

It’s just a number at the end of the day. Shola has always been NUFC. Let him have the chance.

      (Quote)

  14. Well said LS.. let Shola have a chance at least we know he wont jump ship in January … we cant say that about any other player at the club ! No matter who is the number 9 they will not live up to the reputation of Milburn, MacDonald or Shearer its a simple fact Shearer hold the record for most prem goals no1 can compare to that its a simple fact….

      (Quote)

  15. Neh, don’t care. It’s just a number. I’m more interested in the team than one individual. Run it up the flagpole and let the wind have it for all I care.

      (Quote)

  16. Shola is a genuine nice bloke and does care about the toon, he has played through the pain barrier loads of times for us (Gum shield, Mask, Injuries) and always gets slated I feel sorry for the lad but as someone has already said there is no room for sentiment in football. For me he has shone against the mackems & Barcelona and various other games but he is not consistent and sometimes looks uninterested, if he had the hunger for goals like shearer then he could of really been a top player but he just does not have that burning desire to score. The number 9 shirt should go to a marquee signing someone of true class and a proven striker, its not like we aint got the money to get one. I am quite happy to keep Shola he chips in with goals and can be a real handful on his day he is not on loads of money and I think he could strike up a partnership with Ba

  17. Maybe Benny should have the number 9… If he is indeed asking for it like reported, it will tell you something about his mindset for the coming season… Also he is a fan of the game of football and I believe that he knows all about the history (stigma) attached to the number 9 shirt for Newcastle… What have we got to lose? Put your hand up if you don’t think he is good enough…..

  18. People may disagree but i think the best goals scorer is leon best. he dont desere the number 9 shirt,, but hes more deserving than shola.

  19. HBA shouldn’t get that number. It needs to be earned by someone next year. HBA hasn’t even really done that and we just know that the club won’t be bringing anybody in

      (Quote)

  20. None of the above, HBA is a no 10, Giving Strolla the No9 implies a starting place in the team. Even if we were to buy a top player my view is make the reward for next seasons top performer. Not give it out now.

  21. Ameobi has scored 71 goals in 11yrs, poor return for the wages hes had, no wonder hes loyal, any other club would have moved him on years ago.

  22. i wouldnt give it to either of those players to be honest. the number 9 has been worn by out and out strikers over the years and thats how it should stay. someone needs to earn it, and so far no one has, i say leave it vacated for this season coming and see if someone earns the right to wear the famous number 9.

      (Quote)

  23. To all yous saying you wouldn’t have Shola wearing the number 9, I’m presuming you also wouldn’t have Best, Lovenkrands or Ranger wearing it, cos he is better than all those…

      (Quote)

  24. Dimpleboy, agree, they are all mediocre and apart from a short flurry from Best, once Carroll left they all made their brags about filling the void but failed miserably.

  25. Much rather Benny kept the 37. I’d like to think he’d have some allustrious years with us, cementing a legendat least of a Ginola or Robert standard, if not more. I’d love to think that say 10 years down the line, if you saw a Newcastle shirt with 37 on it, the number would be synonymous with Benny.

The man makes the number, rather than the number making the man.

As for the number 9. It should go into a Floyd Mayweather type retirement. A prolonged hiatus, until the right player came along. I’d not be surprised if that player already plays in black and white, in our youth set up. What was that ginger lads name?

  26. “Roared on by around 10,000 British fans among the approximately 40,000-strong crowd – who let themselves down by booing and jeering the Ukrainian national anthem….”

Poor form…why can’t the English just lose with dignity…oh my broken toe…diabolical refereeing…bla blah blah…always someone elses fault…been like this for years.. 🙄 🙄

      (Quote)

  27. Shola or Benny should get the Number 9 shirt imo…

If we were to temporarily “retire” the number 9 shirt, and to reintroduce it when someone was deemed good enough…wouldn’t work imo.

Alan Shearer was THE legendary number 9 at the toon, 10 years service, over 200 goals, chinned Roy Keane AND a Geordie to boot. Carroll had the theoretical chance to fill his boots, but now he has decided to “fill his boots” somewhere else, we’ll never know.

Im all for saving money but surely the fat feck should just give wigan what they want deduct the sell on clause and get the deal done same with Erding, Get them in for the darlo match and give them every chance to get used to playing with there new team mates…

  29. Shola to be our No 9 !!!! No wonder people say we’re deluded FFS!!!

Does all this talk mean we’re not going to get a proper striker through the door??

Ilove Ben Arfa but I don’t see him as our No 9, more like a No 10.

The No 9 shirt has to be earned for it to be fully respected.

      (Quote)

  30. There should still be £35M to buy a No.9 and I’m happy that purchase is taking time. I get the whole earning it thing, but I would be happy knowing that there is a striker who comands a starting place every week, because he bags the goals, but we don’t have that player at the club right now. It’s probably worth pointing out we do still have our second highest goal scorer in Europe at the club, but I don’t see Stroller wearing the shirt, he can be good but not often enough and certainly not capable of being legendary. Every No.9 has brought something to the legend, even Martins who entertained us with celebrations. We’ll have our next Legend when the time is right, hopefully sooner rather than later.

  31. sturidge to be our no.9 why not? hes pacey he showed to be able to finish in prem.. as for shola he not good enough to be no.9 for a girls sunday league we should PAY SUM TEAM in league 2 to take that mug away coz we wont ever sell him

      (Quote)

  32. I agree no-one stands out for the #9 and the pressure it would no doubt put on shoulders. Also agree Benny isn’t a typical #9, but would be the only player with broad enough shoulders to bear it and could be worthy contender as potentially our top playep, but questions remain as to his comeback from that injury.

Regarding Shola defo don’t think he should have it, but think he gets a tough rap on statistics as most of his career he was understudy to Shearer and played way more off the bench than most would have done at his age. Would love to see statistics for him for goals per minutes played rather than games, but can’t find info anywhere on net.

  33. rather give it to phil airey when he makes it or Sammy than strolla, hold it back until we have someone who can demand it through his scoring record, and not minutes on the pitch or time hes been here as a squad player.
Wouldnt retire it though, just wait for its new owner to earn it
