Post-season feedback.

Magic moment last season.
Newcastle return to pre-season training tomorrow (Monday) as they look forward to a second season back in the Premier League. Last season supplied us with plenty of highs and a few lows too.

Newcastle exceeded the expectations of many and managed to finish the season in a comfortable position whilst avoiding getting seriously dragged into a relegation scrap. On the whole I think we can be very proud of the boys and their achievements last term.

I just wanted to reflect on a memorable season and ask YOU what you made of our season. I have devised a few questions for you guys to have a little think about. Here’s my opinions.

1. Most memorable moment of the season?

For me it would have to be the 5-1. It’s always nice getting one over the filth, especially since they claim to be the big boys in the North East these days.

2. Player of the season?

Special mentions to Jose Enrique and Cheik Tiote especially, but for me Joey Barton gets the nod. Barton was playing the best football of his career last season, and out of position to boot! His contributions were key and we just looked a more dangerous side with Joey in it.

3. Goal of the season?

Many will say Tiote’s bullet against Arsenal I’m sure, and what a goal that was. Not just for the quality but also the importance of the goal. Of course it was the goal that earned us a draw against all odds after going 4-0 down. Others may mention Benny’s sole goal at Goodison, But for me my favourite goal was Barton’s against Villa.

4. Low point of the season?

Ben Arfa’s injury? Hughton’s sacking? I have to say Andy Carroll’s sale. I know that there were no consequences after we sold Andy, we didn’t struggle after his sale like many thought we would. But losing a player of Andy’s calibre wasn’t too enjoyable and seeing him in a Liverpool shirt still makes me sick. Although the late equalizer conceded against the Mackems ranks high.

5. Favourite away day?

These days I do tend to attend more away fixtures, I love the atmosphere on an away day. Last season my favourite I attended was Birmingham away. Probably because I know a Birmingham fan who I’m not so keen on, so an away victory on a cold February evening was pretty sweet.

6. Game that left you most angry?

Naturally Sunderland away and Spurs home will come up as we threw away leads in both games by conceding late equalizers. Or the stupid home defeats to Stoke, Blackburn and Blackpool. How about the humiliation of the Stevenage cup match? For me though it’s none of those. It was in fact Man City away, two very poor penalty shouts from the referee cost us that afternoon and if I recall we were much the better team. Oh and mindless thug Nigel De Jong broke Benny that day too.

7. Most improved player?

Danny Simpson for me. Simmo still has his critics and certainly there is still room for improvement, but if I’m fair he has really surprised me. I questioned whether Danny could cut it in the Premier League and he, in my opinion of course, has proved to be more than capable.

8. Flop of the season?

This is maybe a harsh question, but this is a place of opinion and views. James Perch would be my choice. Showed some decent form for Forest in the Championship but seemingly found the step up to the Premier League difficult. James managed to collect five yellow cards in five appearances for the club.

9. Best set of fans?

Obviously I’m currently running a series called view from the away end in which I have a chat to rival fans about our club. But last season which other set of fans did you find to be a credit to their club? I would say Blackburn randomly. Not for their presence at games by any stretch but whilst travelling home from our home defeat to Blackburn I bumped into some of their fans and they knew their stuff and were a pleasure to talk to, nice bunch I thought. Stoke maybe for support.

10. 12th position – Satisfied or disappointed?

Disappointed in the knowledge that if we held on to our lead against West Brom we would have got 9th. But on whole delighted with our finish.

So what do you guys think? Give me your views on the following ( if you can be bothered) Here’s a reminder of the questions:

1. Most memorable game/moment of the season?
2. Player of the season?
3. Goal of the season?
4. Low point of the season?
5. Favourite away day?
6. Game that left you most angry?
7. Most improved player?
8. Flop of the season?
9. Best set of fans?
10. 12th position, satisfied or disappointed?

  3. 1) Has to be the 5-1 hammering! A great day and one i’ll never forget.
    2) Tiote, simply because Barton’s form dipped a little after his outburst
    3) Not a great game but Raylor against Accrington Stanley (Who?) Screamer
    4) Stoke away and Bolton away from a football perspective. CH sacking from off the field
    5) Didn’t get to one this year but Arsenal away was the best result.
    6) Probably Stoke at home, we were so poor that day
    7) Mike Williamson, still have questions about him playing top sides but he’s a more than competent defender.
    8) Lovenkrands
    9) Wolves fans always seem good banter when i see them about.
    10) Disapointed we threw 9th away but on reflection very happy with our first season back in the big time!

  4. 1. Most memorable game/moment of the season?
Tiote super volley followed by steve harper elbow drop πŸ˜€

    2. Player of the season?
Joey Barton his passing was immense all season and got us started this season with a wonder strike againt Villa

    3. Goal of the season?
Tiote against Arsenal easy if it had been a 2 yard tap in i would still rate it goal of the season πŸ˜€

    4. Low point of the season?
Losing 5-1 to Bolton was pretty bad but the carrol sale and not getting any one in to replace him was worse

    5. Favorite away day?
    Beating Arsenal 1-0 was great

    6. Game that left you most angry?
Spurs we should of won that game but simpson failed and let lennon score

    7. Most Improved player?
Krul i think he is going to be one of the best keepers in the world. Do you guys remember his save against Arsenal think it was Nasri’s shot?

    8. Flop of the season?
Erm dont realy have one perch was crap last year aswell so cant realy say he is flop of this season. I will say Smith

    9. Best set of fans?
    Dont know

    10. 12Th position, satisfied or disappointed?
Disapointed with the fact we should have finished 9th

Nice article Mark mate, will be interesting to see everyones response πŸ˜€

  6. 1. Has to be the 5-1 win over the scum, never had so much joy from a game, loved rubbing it in there faces after and still to this today…And for many years πŸ˜†

    2. I have to go with Nolan, even if he has left, he scored some crucial goals for us – his 4 against the Sunderland were also nice πŸ˜‰

    3. Has to be Tiote’s volley against Arsenal.

    4. Selling Carroll was a massive low point for me.

    5. Everton away or Arsenal away – loved Benny’s goal!

    6. Bolton away…I went, also went to Stoke away. πŸ™ Both p1issed me off, complete waste of money ontop of two awful peformances.

    8. Perch, the man is a disgrace

    9. Us πŸ˜‰

10.Sitting on the fence here but a bit of both, relegation was our aim however for us to throw away a 3-0 lead last game then Sunderland to finish above us was a huge disappointment.

      (Quote)

  7. 1. Have to be Sunderland game(beating Chelsea was also sweet!)
    2. Coloccini, kept our defence strong (for the most part πŸ™„ )
    3. Tiote’s vs Arsenal, (Coloccini’s vs Spuds also a cracker)
    4. Bolton 5-1 and Stoke 4-0 πŸ˜₯
    5. Wasn’t at any but Arsenal 1-0 was pretty special.
    6. Liverpool away!!!!!!! πŸ‘Ώ
    7. Best and Willo.
    8. Has to be Campbell.
    9. Blackpool
    10. Satisfied, was bitter about the 3-3 final game as I’m sure everyone was but overall fantastic achievement πŸ˜€

I didn’t really do a good job of picking just one on most of them but kinda had too.

  8. 1. 5-1 win over sunderland was by far the greatest
    2. Barton, fed carroll with crosses and overall suberb running of midfield
    3. Tiote’s goal. Never has there been a more magical equalizer to an even more magical fight back. Magic!
    4. Defeats a Bolton and Stoke I got over, but the sale of Carroll hurt. Thought we had a local nr. 9 for th future eeh?? guess not.
    5. Foreign mag so didnt attend, but I have a fair few arsenal mates and they were pretty unhappy with us beating them at emirates.
    6. Home defeat to Stoke. We kept kicking in high balls and where only met by Stoke defenders. If we only had tried to play them off the park. Ohh well.
    7. Tiote? Had no expectation and came in and delivered such a season. Very impressive first game as well. 46 passes(I think it was) complete out of 46.
    8. Perch had a rough start, but it was only his first season. Campbell however is experienced and looked far from his best. Campbell takes the prize.
    9. I can remember WBA fans still going strong at the last game even when they where down 3-0. I guess they got their reward????
    10. Delighted. Didnt expect too much in the first season back. However some bad results did dent our position, so I am hopeful for next season.

    3.Tiote’s without a doubt
4.Judas fecking off/ conceding the late goalv the scum
5.Everton….whole team played well, Tiote was awesome and Benny’s goal and good craic with the Evertonians before and after the game
    6.Bolton away
7.Er…maybe Best before he got injured.
    8.Delboy Llamsarse
    9.Blackpool
10.Satisfied overall but was gutted when we f*cked up the last game.

  10. 1. Most memorable game/moment of the season?
Harper’s people elbow, following the most deserved goal of the season. Putting Best out for a few. Still makes me laugh.

    2. Player of the season?
    Joey Barton.

    3. Goal of the season?
    Tiotes equalizer.

    4. Low point of the season?
For me it was when Barton punched the swede. I was so dissapointed for Barton, He’s done wonders for his attitude, and until that happened, many other club’s fans were changing their opinion of him, then that happened.

    5. Favorite away day?
Not been to a match, obviously living in Aus, but my favorite away fixture i watched was Everton. Benny ran them to shame.

    6. Game that left you most angry?
Sunderland equalizing last minute. $50 on a win for that game, and started kissing my ticket in the pub. copped much shit after that went in.

    7. Most Improved player?
No so much an “improvement”, but when Besty scored that hattrick, I was just proud for him. Hitting back at all the pundits, against the odds, it was just a great site to see.

    8. Flop of the season?
Sad to say, but i agree with the Perch call… everytime he was in the back, i was biting my nails.

    9. Best set of fans?
The honorable and dignified Arsenal fans who didn’t complain one bit after the 4-4 comeback… Am I fooling anyone?

    10. 12Th position, satisfied or disappointed?
We were well on out wat to finishing 9th, but to see it taken from us in the last half obviously left a bitter taste. But I’d have taken 17th when the season started, so not complaining.

  11. Dan – I would love Canales, he is great and can play at a much higher level than QPR, who are also linked with him. I bought him and Erdinc on FIFA last year! πŸ˜†

First time on over weekend, back at work which is nice. Seen the FOO’s baby. Greatest weekend of my life, wedding aside. Immense.

Toonsy – site updates look great man.

  12. 1. The Villa game for me. It was so good to thrash them so early in the season after they were complete tools in our last meeting. I also missed the 5under1and match, so I actually got to enjoy that one happen.

    2. Barton everytime

    3. THAT Tiote goal!

    4. Low of the season was definitely that early manc Citeh match where we should have won and Benny got destroyed as de Jong got away with absolutely no punishment πŸ‘Ώ

    5. Not been to match as I’m in Florida but the game I enjoyed watching the most was the League Cup win over Chelsea. It was so good to see Shola actually perform!

    6. The Citeh game again.

    7. Has to be Shane Ferguson. He wasn’t really ever talked about before, but now people can see him as viable backup on left wing!

    8. Smith. He showed that he simply cannot cut it at this level anymore

    9. I’d say Arsenal fans were the best to encounter on the whole. Most of them knew their football and could admit when we played well without trying to attack us or give pathetic excuses for their team.

    10. I’d have taken 12th when the season started, especially after HBA got destroyed and we sold Carroll. But it would have been so nice to get 12th

      (Quote)

  13. amobis rocket against chelsea for me.carrol being sold was lowest point just ahead of chris geting the sack.

      (Quote)

  14. 1. Most memorable game/moment of the season?

Not the 4-4 draw against Arsenal,Not the 5-1 against mackems,Not the 6-0 against Aston villa. But is the 4-3 win over chelsea in carling cup.
IS expected that newcastle will be the underdog in that match, yet with the brilliance of Ryan taylor,Shola Amoebi THEY Defeat the odds, and won the game. πŸ˜† πŸ™„

    2. Player of the season?
None other than Fabricio Coloccini. The way he continues his fine form from championship and hardly make a mistake proves he is worth the accolate of Play of the season. Barton is close but his set pieces delivery disappoint me often. Coloccini scored 2 goals last season, and started to move forward often to help chip in goals.

    3. Goal of the season?
Can’t say much,Has to be Ryan taylor free kick goals.Simply Class. Especially the one that hits Jonas Arse.

    4. Low point of the season?
Those Chances that we can move upwards,Especially the Last game. πŸ‘Ώ

    5. Favorite away day?
Has to be those Chelsea Matches, but if you want me to choose,i would say the league game. That Steven Taylor Header in the last minute to salvage a 2-2 draw.

    6. Game that left you most angry?
Last game of the season. nu’ff said. πŸ‘Ώ

    7. Most Improved player?
If Judas Carroll is still around,i would named him that. But now that he is gone,Jonas would be the next. πŸ˜† Jonas is improving alot better and knows the art of trickery in getting fouls call for referee. 😳

    8. Flop of the season?
    Kuqi. πŸ™„

    9. Best set of fans?
Wigan. 😈 Not much fans banter to hear from.Class.

    10. 12Th position, satisfied or disappointed?
Wasted lots of chance to get even higher. 12th position was similar to the one when we were still in PL with the likes of owne,viduka,martins..etc. So if comparing both the squad, and yet similar league position. I will be Just pleased with that.

  16. Most memorable game/moment of the season?

Has to be the 5-1, but there were s many last season. I can’ remember a season with so many “good” games. The 6-0, 4-4, 4-3, and so on.

    Player of the season?

I still stick with Kevin Nolan. Odd considering that I also don’t think we’ll really miss him πŸ˜•

    Goal of the season?

Curveball. Shola’s 2nd against Sunderland. If that had been Rooney or Messi we’d still be seeing that on Sky now!

    Low point of the season?

    Stoke away πŸ‘Ώ

    Favourite away day?

Stoke? FFS Mark! West Brom for me. Top fans they are.

Game that left you most angry?

    West Brom away.

    Most improved player?

Leon Best. From no-hoper to being the only striker I’d actually keep πŸ˜†

    Flop of the season?

I’m not sure I can say anyone. Perch yes, but it’s worth remembering that he was brought as backup. He was shit when we got him so he’s hardly a flop being still shit is he? πŸ˜†

    Best set of fans?

Even though I’m convinced they are noisy because they are gurning, Stoke do back their team vocally.

    12th position, satisfied or disappointed?

Pretty much same as you Mark. I’d have taken 12th at the start, but it ould and probably should have been better!

  19. Toonsy and whomsoever’s responsible for the new layout………. it’s very impressive indeed.

I particularly like the clean, uncluttered banner and more to the point the theme of the blog appears to have moved from reporting news and/ or rumour to that of blogs submitted by a variety of contributors who try to and succeed in promoting discussion.

It’s been noticeable that there’ve been a few articles, on other blog sites too, which have tried to inject a little reality about the economics of running a financially-sound football club.

Most of those blogs have tried to address the matter of the Β£35m that Ashley to commited to invest in the club – even to the point of one yesterday drawing the analogy of a child having and wasting a fiver! Despite those attempts at injecting some sort of reality into some posters, they still pop up!!

Ne’re mind, the obsessives are part of the pagaent that is Newcastle United and long may it prosper.

Here’s hoping for a successful and enjoyable season to come.

Gyans fluke goal, Robbed us of a totally deserved derby double and let Bruce off the hook maybe not such a bad thing looking at how hes going about replacing Bent…

Wigan, Thought we had them twats back in the lower league where they belong, Hopefully wherever zog ends up its terminal for them.
