Ben Arfa back to full fitness!

Ben Arfa at Benton today...
With a lack of good news around at the moment for Newcastle this is something which should make everyone a little more optimistic about the coming season. Hatem Ben Arfa has declared himself “100 per cent fit” and could make his first appearance in 9 months against Darlington.

Ben Arfa is undoubtedly an exciting player and his performances last season showed that, he’s the kind of player who can get the fans up off their seats and someone who can make something on his own. I’m totally sure if we’d had Ben Arfa last season that we’d have finished with more points than we did.

Ben Arfa spoke exclusively to nufc.co.uk after training and this is what he had to say:

“It was a very serious injury, of course, and took a long time to recover from – but I’m 100 per cent fit now,”

“A lot of my recovery was done at Clairefontaine, the French football centre, where I was under the control of the doctor who did the operation back in October.

“I also came back to Newcastle for various updates with the club’s medical staff here, then back to Clairefontaine to continue the recovery. And I managed to get a couple of breaks in as well, because you need that to keep the morale going.

“And now I’m no longer under the doctor, so all the hard work has paid off.”

This should allay some fears which various people had about him not returning to full fitness or even ever playing again. It was always going to be a worry with such a bad injury, and that is why I’m glad that we didn’t risk him last season, as I’m sure the extra two months of conditioning will have done his fitness a world of good.

He went on to say:

“It was a very, very difficult few months and I’m really happy that now it’s all over and I can get cracking, I’m really eager to get back.”

I’m sure I’m not the only one who is very eager to see him back playing. I see Ben Arfa as very similar to Laurent Robert, he may be a bit of a passenger when defending but it’s worth it as he’s got great attacking ability. Since Robert we have had no-one really of that style with real talent, and I’m hopeful that Ben Arfa can produce the goods like Laurent did in his time at Newcastle.

Ben Arfa also spoke of his joy that he has now got some fellow countrymen in the Newcastle squad along with the French speaking Demba Ba. He also spoke about the persuading of Sylvain Marveuax to join Newcastle.

“It’s good for my morale that we’ve signed such good players from France, players that I know and that I’ve played against, It’s going to be really good.”

“I spoke to Sylvain Marveaux before he came here and it was a very good conversation. I told him it was the right place for Sylvain to come and I’m very glad he took my advice.”

It’s always good to keep your players happy and for a change the club is keeping a player happy, not all of them, but some of them, and that’s a start. Ben Arfa seems in very good spirits and I can’t wait to see him lining up in the number 10 position next season.

Ben Arfa’s excited about the French revolution, are you too?

  1. MM, my point entirely mate.

A massive gamble or a small gamble with a similar return? I’ll take 20 Bests over 1 Torres, playing the odds game.. Who would do something like that?

    @big Dave
Signing anyone.? Just ask around. They expect loads . Erdinc. Zog. Naylor. Cornetto or barnetto whatever he’s called, Sturridge , long, M’Bengue, Ireland, Gameiro, Gervinho, bridge.

    Take your pick. There’ll be another 10 named tomorrow. 😆 😆 😆

  17. BSN9- it has been ages since anyone has said half have them will sign, imo we will sign Naylor and Erdinc, am I allowed on your train?

  19. Can’t see where Gosling is going to fit in midfield, perhaps pardew is gonna give him the RB slot ahead of Simmo – he did play in that position for everton a few times

      (Quote)

  20. See what I mean by your banter? I rest my case…

    RE: transfers,

I think we missed out on Whickham. great potential for third of Carroll fee.
    Massive re-sale value.

      (Quote)

  21. I’d be happy with Erdinc, less of a risk than Wickham imo, And he seems to blend in with the way we want to play

      (Quote)

  22. Jobey,

I know nothing about Erding, haven’t paid attention to it all until there is something concrete.

I see Whickham as your typical English centre forward. Has speed and strength and plays through the middle.
He knows where the goal is but the best thing about him is his desire to improve. He is a 100% consummate professional and will definitely, definitely get better under the right coaching.

He fits into our policy exactly apart from one important aspect to the club….he cost money.

      (Quote)

  23. Yeah i see what you mean, I’ve not seen much of Wickham, but when i’ve seen him i haven’t been to impressed. I don’t particularly like the way English players are overhyped.
He’d be good if he got coached by Shearer because when he’s older and loses the pace he has he’ll be similar imo.

      (Quote)

  24. He is many years off losing his pace though.
I see Erding as a bigger risk

    1) He’s Turkish with no other turkish links at the toon
    2) He hasn’t scored a lot of goals in an easier league
    3) He will cost around 7 million pounds

Whickham has been trained and scouted by some top coaches who all voach for him.

Very shrewd more by the Mackems, fantastic investment and imo, the most obvious replacement for Carroll on the market at a third of the price

      (Quote)

  25. I feel Wickham would have fit in more in our old system of play, longer balls etc. But now I think we’re going for a different approach, which is why we’re looking at the likes of Erdinc and Long, who have better close control and are slicker, as appose to the strong Wickham. But if we’re honest, you never know what’s going through Ashley’s head like

      (Quote)

  26. Best scored 3 times more than most strikers….what’s your point?

Different teams, different ages, different stages of their careers.

Long won’t be worth 20 million after a couple of years, he is a developed player.

    At this rate Whickham will.

      (Quote)

  27. I think Long would be a great buy, I’d prefer him to Erding by a mile, if Long was English he would be worth well over 12 million – I think we could get him for about 6. He would be a good little partner for Ba and could play off him as well.

Pardew having links with Reading could work in our favour as well.

      (Quote)

  28. also 3 of wickhams were in 1 game, so he’s only scored 6 games, hardly prolific, I don’t think Wickham will be worth much more than they’ve paid for him in a few years. maybe around 13m, but i don’t think he’s gunna hit it off straight away, which us and sunderland would need

      (Quote)

  29. Wickham is overhyped because he is English, not saying he isnt a good player but he hasnt found scoring form yet and he is playing in a lower league than Erdinc is but yes he is only 18 so he is only getting better or he mite not get any better. He would be a big risk and to throw him rite into the first 11 could be a mistake.

I would prefer long over either of them two though if we could get him for under 5 million would be great.

      (Quote)

  30. Moreno….1 every 2.2 isn’t too bad though, better than Gameiro, yes he plays for Turkey but was born in France and has duel nationality,
I agree Whickam is probably going to be a great investment but we aren’t going to pay that much for a player who will come good in a couple of years, we can’t afford to and neither can Sunderland imo, they just havn’t realised that yet 😆

      (Quote)

  31. I honestly believe we will see Daniel Sturridge come in on loan.

We won’t spend over 5 million on a striker imo.

      (Quote)

  32. I’d like Sturridge loan, Long 5 mil+best then replace any departures

    we’d be pretty strong then

      (Quote)

  33. Santii,

I wouldn’t throw him into the first 11 personally, give him a taste this season with a view to establishing next.

    All irrelevant now though 😀

      (Quote)

  34. Moreno – So you’d splash out 8m and potentially 13m on wickham who might not be a hit this year, still leaving us with Ba as our best striker?

      (Quote)

  35. Jobey,

No, I would also sign another striker (as well as)

As if Whickham isn’t getting a lot of action this season then it’s 8 million rather than 13

      (Quote)

  36. Moreno…nobody has me, if we had £20m just to spend on players transfer fees and they spent that amount on Whickam I would have been disgusted
If we had £40m then fair enough but we won’t spend that.

      (Quote)

  37. If we had 20 million to spend on transfer fees it would leave 12 million left, which is currently 12 million more than we have spent on transfer fees 😕 ❓

      (Quote)

  38. I asked you why we couldn’t afford it?

“if we had £20m just to spend ”

There is only one reason we don’t have that much or any other amount, one man’s own personal decision.

I think we can afford it and more and the fans are believing all this penny pinching philosophy which is flowing from the club.

Anyway I am off to bed and an article I wrote about 2 hours ago will be perfect to resume this chat tomorrow 😉

      (Quote)

  39. All I’m saying Is if we’re to spend £20m(which it appears we won’t) that amount would need to be spent on a player for now, not for the future. If the scum don’t buy a decent striker they are up sh!t creek imo……hopefully 😀

      (Quote)

  40. Moreno…..I agree it’s fatty’s decision, prob didnt put my point across very well, I just think with limited(if any) funds available to Pardew, that sum would be too much to risk on potential. 😉

      (Quote)

  41. Moreno…neet, but I’m with you on the”it’s been spent on wagges, fees and training facilities” bollox 😉

      (Quote)

  42. Aye rich,

I get what you’re saying, I am maybe just looking at things not as they currently are, but how I believe things should be..

I know it may be a fantasy thinking about spending a third of the money we recieved for Englands number nine on the next best young English prospect, but there you go…we are all allowed our little dreams 😀

    Viva La France!

      (Quote)

  43. Well actually, if you are looking at it being 8 million rather than 12, it’s actually less than a quarter of the money we received.

    Still a dream though.

      (Quote)

  44. Moreno….actually said similar on an earlier comment………….obviously the main thing is the squad improving but if we spent a bit quality money on a couple of quality players it would take us that bit further forward……..still might happen but I wont be holding my breath 🙁
reet off to me pit. later lads

      (Quote)

  45. Great news, hope he can match the impressive displays he gave last season, There’s no question the lad is a game changer and a game winner, just look at Everton. We should be a much more enjoyable team to watch next season…lets hope that goes hand in hand with success…

      (Quote)

  46. If we had signed Whickham, everyone would be complaining that we would sell sell him as soon as his value had risen to the right amount… After all we are a selling club 😕 … so why any fan would be upset about us not going for him is beyond me….

My point is, no matter what we do in the transfer market, some fans will be upset… So if I was in charge of Newcastle.. I would be doing it the same as Ashley… My way!
Imagine being in a position where every decision you make (even those with the best intentions) was derided by fans.. Can you imagine the disaster that would unfold, if he actually listened to the fans… have a read of the comments above on here… half the time we can’t agree on whats best for our club…
Too many cooks can spoil a broth….

      (Quote)

  47. Glad he is back fit, I hope his match fitness goes smoothly as often players who have been out a while pick up little groin and hamstring injuries. It seems we are definitely building our team around Ben Arfa. Buying players he has a rapport with, who speak his language and who can fit his style of play. Lets hope it all works out.
