Things could get very nasty, very quickly at Newcastle!

An opening day repeat will do nicely.
I was sat on my thinking chair earlier watching Sky Sports News (in my underpants if that helps complete a mental image for you) and one thing struck me.

They’ve got this little bit in the corner of the screen that goes through the first six fixtures of each Premier League outfit, and with only 38 days to go until the big kick-off it left me pondering just how much of a poor start we actually have. All in my opinion of course.

For once we start our campaign at home, although unfortunately the visitors will be Arsenal. We had two excellent results against them last term, but that was then and this is now. They may be having some issues with retaining players but you can bet your bottom dollar that they will still be a match for us on the opening day of the season.

The we face an early season trip to Neverland to take on those European dreamers, Sunderland. Now we also made those look silly, both home and away last season. Being outplayed on your own park by a team that is “light years” behind them must be awfully embarrassing. Instead they have had to cling on to the fact that they finished just above the team that they were “light years” ahead of. Cringeworthy.

That was all last season though. What if it all goes wrong this time round? We could end up heading into the QPR game with the pressure already on. Make no mistake, it will be on as there is most certainly an undercurrent of discontent starting to form amongst disillusioned sections of the fanbase.

Last season there was a sense of togetherness, unity, that we needed to stick together as a club to help the team get the job done. That, to me, isn’t there this time around which is a mighty shame. It just seems the pressure is going to be on right from the word go.

Of course I could be worrying about nothing. We could come flying out of the blocks, although for the life of me I can’t remember off the top of my head the last time we done such a thing. One thing is certain though, and that is that we’ll know whether or not we are worrying about something or nothing in 38 days time.

Pressure? What pressure?

  15. To be fair, this mobile version is spot on Toonsy!

A little bit off topic, but the reaction from some fans recently had really narked me, like the reaction to the Llambias statement saying we’re being wise with the £35m and about the costs if free transfers etc..

What’s the alternative? “We have £35m to spend, and we are definitely going to spend it all”

That’s how you end up paying £30m for someone worth about £6m. Hide the wallet, pretend you got nowt, tuck your jewellery in, or you’re getting robbed.

The alternative you ask? Spending it unwisely I suppose- a position advocated by a suprisingly high number of supporters

  17. i like to think that all this talk is just a smokescreen to keep other clubs from hiking up the prices of players for us. Act like we’re skint with a super tight owner (okay, he actually is, but…) then immediately give the club what they’re asking for. Deal done.

I can hope and be optimistic, right?

  18. MDS, let’s just get Big Freddie back then.. A good few years before we collapse and we all end up watching Gateshead.

  19. Surley every pound you spend at the big mans stores benefits NUFC as it gives him more liquidity

  21. Aye lads, let’s just continue to be spoon fed lies and be made false promises at every turn.

Just because he tells the fans that we have spent loads on agent fees, the reality is that whilst they aren’t cheap they haven’t took a huge chunk out of that money and all the other money we bring in through TV, season tickets, releasing a different replica shirt for each weekday etc etc – we still have plenty of the money left.

Other clubs know this, as they happen to be football clubs and sign players all the time so they know how much stuff costs.

If you want to believe there is some amazingly intricate thought out plan to our transfer policy then get yourselves away and be happy.

For me and other fans I think The Who sum it up best…..”We won’t get fooled again”

  22. MORENO think most of us kna (or we should) that ashley and co,have found a nice rich rose garden and to keep it ganning you put **** on it,but what can we dee,try and find a bright side to it,hurts i know but we only have the toon

  23. ice,

It just pains me that some fans buy into these lot as much as they do.

Llambias came out and said we were keeping ourselves for the January window and immediately someone started using that in a debate saying it was a good idea!!!! Christ !!!!

    When will some people learn.

NUFC is the only place I get shat on from a great height and come back for more. Anyone or anything else would be told to get to f**k

  24. I came all the way back for that! I was expecting “Bang on Dave” or something.

I see what you’re saying though, definitely. You’re just wrong is all.

    When were you fooled? Seriously..

  25. As long as that £35 million is used for something to do with NUFC and we have a better team then I’m no fussed. If he wants to use it to pay some of his huge loan of then bonus, it means we owe him less which may ***** the interest of A.N.Other potential owner.

We’ll not know what has gone on with that money until next season at least so there is little point in worrying about it. From my point of view we’ve got some good players in which is all I want to see. If they cost nowt then fair enough, if they cost £20 million then fair enough, although it seems that if they cost the latter it would soothe a lot of people.

  26. MORENO thing is they say he has learnt from his mistakes, who says they were mistakes or part of a greater plan,or is this just my evil mind, lets wait and see,and wait and wait ——— 😉

  28. JOBEY thing is hes only had one good season,he done nowt before that, maybe hes a late starter, might be to much to put your hat on yet, doesnt seem to be many clubs knocking there door down at the price they want,i could be wrong like 😕

  30. Toonsy,

I really couldn’t care how much money we spend as long as we come out better off. Just think a lot of the fans optimism for the new season is clouding their judgement of the regime.

How many assurances are we going to get that don’t come to pass?

Also seems some fans are happy for their Managing Director to use them as a tool not to be ripped off in the transfer market……apparantly… 🙄

  31. Next years accounts lets all raise a glass and celebrate the club having turned a really healthy profit,

as with the ambition we are showing it will be the only success we will be toasting….

as a fan it’s what I have always dreamed of!

  32. I don’t think of myself as a fan. I think of myself as a supporter. So that’s what I do. Ashley is a massive douche bag and has made many ridiculous mistakes. However he does seem to want financial stability for us. Whatever his motives are I can’t help but think that it’s a good thing. UEFA are going to be cracking down harder and harder on the financial side of the game and getting in on the ground floor seems smart to me. As far as transfers are concerned, we seem to have acted swiftly and intelligently when opportunities have presented themselves but you can’t judge a player until you’ve seen him play with the rest of the team. Until then I support Newcastle, always have, always will.

  33. Look at the new league table which of course is alphabetical before the start of the season, now look at the teams at the bottom – who is to say that come next May the same teams will be in that position apart from say Spurs?

    Why bother playing next season?
