Fringe players on the move?

Looking fresh as usual...
Over the last few days numerous sources have claimed that Newcastle have been in discussions with Blackpool over the transfer of troublesome centre forward Nile Ranger. The price tag is something which hasn’t been made known but the Daily Mail reports that it’s around the £1.5 million mark. Incidentally it’s also now claimed that a potential move has collapsed due to the striker failing to agree terms with the Championship outfit.

Is it right that Ranger is to go? Well, I have split views on this. Ranger has shown great promise in games such as Liverpool and Tottenham at home, tearing the opposition centre backs apart with his great pace and determination. But other games he’s been as much use as a chocolate fireguard and spent most his time on his backside or running round like a headless chicken.

Ranger is not popular among the staff at Newcastle with Alan Pardew repeatedly mentioning his poor punctuality and sometimes lack of effort. Coupling that with his off field stupidity with his “mandem” it really makes me think he’s not the kind of player I’d want around the club. Maybe I’d think differently if he was an exceptional talent, but instead he’s a childish badman who cares more about gangs than football. “Gangster first, footballer second” a quote from the man himself.

I’d personally loan Ranger out, unless we get a very good deal for him. I know some of you will be thinking that he’s already had too many chances, but sometimes he shows a little spark of greatness, and I’d hate for him to produce that elsewhere knowing we let him go.

I do feel Blackpool could have potentially been a great move for Ranger as Holloway is a ‘take no crap’ kind of manager and has already shown that he can turn tearaway into talent with DJ Campbell who had his most productive spell in his career under him at Blackpool. But it looks as though orange is not his colour, and I reckon his “bredrin” will be giving him some stick about that.

Something I would look into would be inserting a buy back clause into a deal with any new club. I know it’s not always something which clubs will be happy to do, but if a club really wants him then I’m sure they’ll do it. If we put in a clause of around £5 million to buy him back and he does really show his potential and turn into a top player we will have first refusal on him, and be able to make a small loss on bringing him back to the club, but it’d be worth it if he turned into the player he potentially could.

In other news we’re also looking at moving on another one of our squad players:

Wayne Routledge is a much sought after man with a lot of interest from both Premiership and Championship clubs with the likes of QPR, Swansea, Nottingham Forest and Leicester all eyeing up the pacey wide man for a fee of around £1.5 million. Hopefully with plenty of clubs interested in Wayne we could maybe start a little auction and have moneybags QPR and Leicester competing over him, we can hope.

Given the opportunity I would probably take Neil Taylor from Swansea in a straight swap for Routledge, otherwise Swansea can jog on, because if we can’t have who we want, neither can they. The balls in our court for that one.

I’m happy to see both of these players leave, and hopefully have them replaced with one extra incoming player, would you keep either of these?

  1. He cares more about himself and his image, and it clearly holds him back, I thought he could have a great future but I was wrong.

  2. Personally I dont rate him
Everything about him screams “Ameobi”. The loping gait, lack of urgency, limited repertoire. We just dont need another Shola

  3. Carroll had a full season as our main man in the Championship. I think Ranger needs a season on loan in the Championship too and then we can compare them. He is a great prospect and needs to have a dose of football reality too. He is a talent and I for one would love him to get a season away on loan, somewhere like Blackpool with Holloway and see how he does.

  4. Talent is nothing without application. Ranger will always squander his. He doesn’t have the right mentality to make it in the top flight.

  5. Shame his move to Blackpool doesn’t seem to be working out. Mind you I wouldn’t gave sold him. I’d have made it a loan deal and told him that he wants football, there it is, now prove you can do it. If you can, welcome back. If you can’t, well….

  6. A sensible article about Ranger, I havent seen many about. He is clearly talented and has looked very dangerous at points, but also clearly has an attitude problem.
One other point to bear in mind, if he goes we are down another player….several decent buys are needed just to have a reasonable squad size….

  7. I’d get rid of them both. Like your idea of the buy back clause though. However with Ranger’s attitude, I sadly doubt that he’ll ever match his potential with actual ability and skill. I’d take a swap for Naylor for Routledge.

I also wanna see the back of Perch, Xisco and Smith still!!

  8. I think if he wants to stay at the club then he has to prove that he has committed. If he doesn’t want to put the effort in then we should try and loan him out to a championship club. If his performances are poor then we should think about selling him

  9. Toontom – its not squad size that is the problem. Ours is bigger than Chelsea’s for example. Quality in depth is the issue….

  10. You know I bumped into Holloway at Bristol Temple Meads station on my way up north to SJP for the Birmingham game at the end of the season! I don’t think he appreciated the black and white stripes I was sporting after our draw with Blackpool a few weeks before.

  11. Fair play Toonsy, thats the phrase I should have used….Guthrie/Lovens et al are just not good enough…

Saying that Chelsea’s squad is not that big at all!

This is why we need to be cautious in what we wish for.

I think Ranger needs a year away. He was a great impact sub and bossed defenders without scoring. If he can have the same year in the lower level Judas got he could get off and running and save us all this £10-£15 million we are all talking of for a CF.

  13. ***** Ranger is going on loan to Blackpool according to the Mirror and Routledge is being sold to Leicester according to the Express!! *****

  14. I think with Ranger a season loan with him getting games may be the wake up call he needs. When Beardsley call’s him a lazy waster you have to wonder what goes on in his head.Hope we have some positive news before the America tour.Toonsy hit the nail on the head about squads.

  15. I’ve heard serious matters with Ranger have gone on behind the scenes and have not been made public which mean he has to be sold.

I know this to be true.

      (Quote)

  16. I totally agree Tommy @15 if the likes of Beardsley comes out with this type of statement then ranger may as well forget about it. He may have raw talent but his attitude will resurface time and time again in the future. Get rid of him we don`t need rotten apples!

  17. Toontom – absolutely, but daft as it sounds we actually need players like Guthrie etc etc. The reason being is that we aren’t gonna get 25 first team players in our squad. I think most clubs struggle to do that in all honesty because if a player is good enough to start he won’t be happy about sitting on the bench. What we need to do in the ideal world is get 16-17 players who can all play in the first team without worry with the rest being made up of Guthrie and so on. In my opinion of course 🙂

I know you will say in bullshitting but I’m not and I don’t want to go into details in case I compromise the source.

But it was something that the club have kept quiet and I’m not even sure if it’s known commonly within the club.

I expect to get slated for bullshitting but all I can say is I’m not.

  19. Off topic ,but is anyone else concerned ,now that essian is out for 6 months, chelski might make a move for Tiote?

      (Quote)

  20. Away from that issue, I don’t believe Ranger has an eye for goal and his GS record is abysmal at all levels.

  21. Ranger can go lads he has no class and does not understand what it means to wear the Newcastle shirt. Feel sorry for routledge in that he was never made to feel welcome and is very much a confidence player but with jonas possibly moving to the right and barton able to play there he is seemingly surplus to requirements,

I dont think he is a bad squad player though which is a shame, Would rather get rid of smith! 😆

      (Quote)

  22. Both players can do a job for us and are useful squad players. Loaning Wayne out last season cost us points and was a very stupid move.

      (Quote)

  23. Wouldn’t mind keeping Routeledge, I don’t think he’s any worse than Jonas.

Ranger, can go. His attitude stinks (you can’t only put the effort in on the field). You have to put some in in training too.

  24. Toonsy, pick up Ranger and give him a ride on your bus down to Blackpool will yer? Sooner that kid is out of here the better. Bobby I believe you, wouldn’t put anything past that idiot. sheesh

  25. A bit of advice Bobby, if you have no intention of devulging your “inside info” don’t announce you know something on a blog… It makes you come across as an attention seeker 😯 😯

    Bobby – an attention seeker? … never!!! 😯 😆

  28. i could actually believe bobby on this one. Ranger doesnt seem to care about anything else than being gansta. However moving him on wont bring in anyone else as he wont make room in our 25man squad. Its a balance as we do need squad players, but could have a hard time attracting better squad players than we already have. But dont think ranger will be a huge loss.

      (Quote)

  29. JJ,
I know for a FACT that Bobby is telling the truth.
Ranger is utter scum with not a care in the world for anyone but himself and his “Gangsta” entourage.
Get rid, he will never make it and will most likely end up in jail.

      (Quote)

  30. TGS – How do you know though? I have no son to doubt you but I also have no way of knowing if what you say is true. Esp after the twatter blog.

Do your sources give you knowledge of transfers and is that how you know we are going to sell people, not buy and be relegation fodder again?

      (Quote)

  31. Cash from the sale of players and savings on the wage bill seem to be a priority for our board, they find it easier to get rid of players than signing new ones, if they are not careful we will end up with an even thinner squad than last season, doesnt matter that the players who have already left or who are leaving are crap, they were all first team squad members.

      (Quote)

  32. Raffo,
When was the Gangsta a great impact sub ❓
Was that the games against Liverpool and Spuds?
What about the other games when he looked like a fish out of water, he is crap and should be bounced out. 👿

      (Quote)

  33. Raffo,
My source has nothing to do with transfer speculation as this is governed by Ashley, the Gimp and Lee Charnley who all keep things very quiet.
The Gangsta’s behaviour is well known by lesser important folk at the club and it is this that gets leaked out.
He is honestly a “bad un” who’s behaviour is becoming worse by the week ❗

  34. Can someone please explain to me how typing FACT in cap locks imediately makes the statement it relates to true? 😕

By the way, I believe Bobby, but I am not a fan of ” I know something you don’t” stories….

  35. If past and current managers/staff are telling us that Ranger has the wrong attitude and he is not learning then yes, get him out.
Footballers these days are known to be primadonnas, spoilt individuals that need their ego stroking. Managers these days can handle that and mould these people into decent footballers, even if they are spoilt and out of touch with reality in a lt of cases. Naturally there are a few that truly appreciate how lucky they are and reflect his professionally and personally.
Ranger should be hungry, desperate to work hard, learn and make an impression on his coaches, colleagues and fans. The prise? Mega stardom and riches beyond imagination.
That should easily be enough motivation for him to come in early every day, practice hard and learn from those around him. Clearly he thinks he has already made it and has become arrogant.
Good luck to him then. Ability is one thing, but without the right application and work ethic it will only carry an individual so far.
He is not fit to scrub then boots of a proper Newcastle United forward, so as they say: ‘GET ON YER BIKE SON!’

      (Quote)

  36. It’s sad, I was rooting for Ranger. By the time he matures and learns that the ‘gangsters’ romanticized in music and movies are merely works of fiction, it will be too late. He would have squandered a gift most men would have killed for, and worse yet, he would know it.
