How much is Tiote really worth?

Cheik to stay or go?
Since his 3.5m transfer from FC Twente last summer Cheik Tiote has really shown himself to be a very good player and has adapted to the Premier League with ease. Tiote was the mainstay of our side last year and I expect him to be the same this season.

This article isn’t me saying that I’d like to sell him; in fact it’s the complete opposite. When thinking about this subject I struggle to try and put a sensible price on the head of our Ivorian star. Something else which is a question is not just how much he’s worth, but how much he’s worth to us? And I think he’s almost irreplaceable.

Looking at the current market where the likes of Jordan Henderson and Stuart Downing cost around £20 million, and when Tiote is miles ahead of these players quality wise it really makes you think that he’s worth around £30 million to £40 million.

But the thing is, I wouldn’t actually sell him for £30 million. We have shown from the Andy Carroll sale that it is not guaranteed that all the money goes back into transfers. Also, I’m not sure how easy it would be to replace such an important player in our team without shelling out a huge amount of money, and I don’t think that’s the way we work anymore.

It was reported the other day that Chelsea had enquired about Tiote, although this has since been denied, but I’m sure if he became available then both them and Manchester City among others would be interested as they seem to have a huge love for defensive midfielders. Tiote reportedly turned down a move to Chelsea in January because he didn’t want to live in the capital and he’s happy living in Newcastle with his current lifestyle. Let’s hope he’s happy living in Newcastle for the next six years.

Tiote also has a humongous six years left on his current contract, and he’s on a good wage according to reports when he signed a new contract, supposedly his deal is worth £50,000 a week, not bad eh? Hopefully he doesn’t have his head turned by the cash, as he seems like a good man; He sends a percentage of his wages back to his family so he’s not just a bling boy similar to the likes of Kieron Dyer.

I think there is only one way in which I would be able to accept Tiote leaving the club. That would be if Chelsea, the main protagonists, offered something like Daniel Sturridge, Patrick Van Aahnolt and £13 million pounds for the influential midfield player. I know it leaves a huge hole in the centre of midfield, but the buy-out clause of Blaise Matuidi is around £13 million and he could be brought in as the direct replacement for Cheik.

I’m not doubting we’d miss Cheik, but I do feel that Matuidi is around the same level of Tiote both skill and strength wise, his only problem is that he isn’t proven in the Premier League, but the additions of fan favourite Sturridge and good young left back would definitely soften the blow if Tiote left the club.

I feel that Tiote is ALMOST irreplaceable and there is only one way I’d allow him to leave, how much do you think he’s worth?

  1. I certainly wouldn’t want him to be sold, but if forced I would take Van Aanholt, Jon Obi Mikkel and Nicolas Anelka for him! That would just about cover our transfer requirements.

  2. lmao, he is for sale, for 30 mil, and if im honest, his sale will pay for the current players wagers for the next5 years, its not cheap to have these player you know, buyinng them for 3.5 and selling them is not what we want to do , but we have to balance the books, well at least thats what there gona say to us 🙁

  3. Sturridge, Van Aanholt and £17 mil. £13 mil for Matuidi’s buyout clause, £4 mil for his subsequent wages 🙄

  4. posted a comment the other outlining similar views to the above. selling tiote for 30 million would probably only cover signing carlton cole for 5million on a 40’000 per week contract over 6 years. really astonishing astronomical numbers when you look at it. heaven forbid if we ever had to dip into our sponsorship/gate receipts/merchandise/tv money. it may spell the end to Newcastle United FC as we know it.

on a serious not though, i agree with toonsy in that I dont mind as long as we are stronger at the end of the window. we are probably (not definitely) stronger as we speak but we are never far away from selling our best players. its the sheer lack of ambition that is so worrying about the current regime. and whilst pardew won me over somewhat during the season, he is starting to undo his good work. if he keeps on, then he may find himself out of a job sooner than he certainly seems to think

  5. Now I dont think that there is anything to this story, so I am not worried one bit right now. But he is worth a lot! The comparison with Essien is not far off and we have a very strong and great tackling defensive midfielder on our hands who can pass the ball as well! Cant put a precise price tag on him, but Sturridge, Van Aanholt and £13M would definately soften the blow for me.

  6. I see we are linked with Mr Injury prone himself Owen Hargreaves. 😯 😕 ❓

  7. I think Ashley will turn down their offers of £10-15M for him this window, knowing that after a second season showcasing him in the prem the big boys will return next summer with £20-25M+.

Get used to this until Ashley claws back his money and/or sells. Unless we are really successful next season, which won’t happen with the current goalscorers. I remain optimistic but cautious.

  8. Nobody is safe at Newcastle under Ashley so nothing would surprise me in the transfer market. Like all bullies he surrounds himself with “Yes Men” such as Lambias (The streaker) and Alan (Don’t rock the boat) Pardew.

  9. Holding mids are not hard to find tbh.
He’s quality and I love his attitude but really wouldn’t be the end of the world if we sold him. Same with Enrique.
Carroll is the one we should’ve kept and as is being proven now, is the toughest to replace.

  10. Personally I wouldn’t sell him, at all. We could build a team around him you know. Strange concept init?

However, Sturridge, PVA and 20 million would soften the blow. It would never happen, but it would reflect his importance to us.

If we want silly money we need to twang the chord of Liverpool 😆

  11. i’d take £30m for him. Actually i’d take £20m for him. However – i divvent think that Ash would let me keep it 😥

  12. Can any Darlington based mags recommend a pub close to the ground for tonights game. I’ll have kids with me.

  13. I would try keep hold of tiote and I dont think he is in any rush to leave , and the only for us to keep hold of him is been succesful on the pitch

  14. I think I said this earlier in the week, I think if we swapped Tiote for Sturridge and got in this Matuidi fella that we would be a stronger all round team (If Matuidi is as good as his reputation).

However I never even thought about PVA. Add that to the mix as well and you’re killing two birds with one stone by replacing Enrique.

I honestly think I would be cool with this, even without cash included in the deal. I’m a massive massive fan of Tiote, but one player doesn’t make a team.

  15. Tiote is definately worth keeping and I take my hat off to Ashley (a first) for tying him to a long contract. That puts us in the pole position if we have to negotiate a price. However, if it means we get suitable exchanges then by all means go for it. I don`t go with a money transfer because I fear I know will that money will go!

  16. No hope of a selling Tiote and getting Sturridge and Matuida in
    Tiote = 50k a week

Sturridge would want 50k a week as would Matuida, don’t think paying two wages instead of one is part of the fat controllers plan

in other news – Lua Lua off to Brighton today for medical

  17. I’m going to be deeply unpopular here, but…

I think you’re over-valuing Tiote a bit. He is a brilliant player and I’d be utterly gutted if we lost him (don’t think we will – it’s just press garbage) BUT

    – he’s not great going forward; often ‘does a Parker’ when he should be getting a pass off to a player on the move.
    – he spends too much time suspended
    – he’s away for a month at the ACN

To be honest, we didn’t do too badly without him, although it depended on the type of opposition. I’ve said it before: Guthrie is a better option if you need to attack.

  18. Sturridge comes over as an arrogant, overrated cock, to be honest. As Jersey has pointed out, £35m for Carroll’s not looking like such a good deal for us right now.

  19. Id take £10 + Van the Man and Sturridge.

I would also take Hargreaves on a pay as you play. He is absolute quality but has massive injury problems. I think with Gosling we have someone who can play CDM, obviously if he recovers well enough and pre-season will let us know that. Barton can also slot in there, and I would rather Barton in the CM than on the wing.

Hargreaves is a major talent just such a risk. Pay as you play would suit Ashley as he prob wouldnt end up playing that much!!

  20. I see Kadar, Tavernier, and Airey all feutured for the reserves yesterday. No Vuckic- is he hurt or playing with the first teamers with Fergie I wonder?

  21. Good question, MDS. It’s all been very quiet about Vukic for ages now. I’d like to think it’s the latter, but who knows?

  22. NOT 👿 actually we love him 😆
Cant wait to welcome him back home
    Get some NUTS
I pity the fool who messes with Tiote.
