What should we expect of Yohan?

What should we expect of this man?
First off, I’d like to say that I think Yohan Cabaye is a terrific signing for NUFC.

However recent quotes from Pardew and Co have got me wondering if maybe the expectations are being put too high on the lad.

In the handful of Lille games I watched last term, Cabaye really stood out to me as a quality footballer. He’s a very cerebral footballer who does the little things and has the knack of making the players around him look better. The problem with players like Cabaye is that they usually take time to settle into the Premier League.

There is a reason why imports are generally cheaper than domestic league players as there is always that bit of uncertainty of whether or not they can be effective within the Premier League style of play.

I think a perfect example is Fabricio Coloccini as they play very different positions but take the same kind of approach to the game. Both rely more on positioning and skill, as opposed to just pure athleticism. Conversely, players like Cheik Tiote can usually make an immediate impact because their game is based more on power and pace.

As we can all remember, Colo wasn’t exactly a hit in his first season in the Premier League. Now he is the first name on the team sheet and wearing the armband to boot. Cabaye can certainly follow his lead and I think he has the skill set to be a quality player for NUFC, but I’m not so sure it’ll happen this season.

It’s a great deal for the club, and we certainly have players in midfield that are capable of giving Cabaye time to get comfortable with the squad and the league. The familiarity that he has with some of his compatriots within the squad may also speed up his adjustment period.

But history warns us that propping up a player like Cabaye as someone who will make an immediate impact and change the dynamics of a team, is only leading down a path of disappointment and potentially debilitating pressure on a lad.

No doubt, this has come about in an effort to convince the fans that the star player they’ve been hoping for has already been signed. This is the problem with claiming ambition whilst not showing it. The Toon Army seems to be just as intimidating to it’s manager as it is to it’s opposition.

But we are not daft.

A bit of honesty will always be respected even if it’s not exactly what we want to hear.

Last night Cabaye got a taste of what playing for the Toon is all about, although to be fair it’s not usually about trouble! With a little patience, he may one day follow Captain Colo into magpie folklore.

  1. I think the article brings up just how important its going to be for our new signings to settle in. Will they be given time to settle in? Or will those fans who clearly know everything about football get on their backs if they have a few poor performances? As stated above it took Collocini a while to get to grips with living in a new country and playing at the pace of the english game. Or he could turn out to be an Albert Luque and be shite.

  2. My son was NUFC Mascot last night and thought it was interesting that when we got the players signatures all the players put in their squad numbers apart from Ryan Taylor….who put β€œLB”…..!!??
Could he be Enriques replacement?? Or has he always done this….
Lastly I would like to thank all the NUFC Players as they made it the best day of my son’s day….and Pardew played his part….
Why don’t we give them a break and look forward to the new season…..
    Smith/Cabaye/Arfa/Forster and Sammi looked Class!!
    Howay the Lads..

  3. I assume “LB” stands for lucky bastard in honour of the fact that Ryan Taylor is still somehow a premier league player πŸ˜•

  5. I actually said to my friend at the match last night “you can see why they signed Cabaye, he looks made to play in the Premier League”. He’s not some flair winger who isn’t “tough” enough to fit in, he has grit, determination and a great passing ability, he’ll have a pretty instant impact playing alongside Tiote imo.

Apparently NUFC for sale on the continent but not being floated in england so not to recieve negative publicity at his lack of investment No interest from quatar but is for sale in the right circles in whispers….Spanish tabloids(apparent)
    I love a good rumour!!!
I am seriously starting to come round to the idea of swapping Tiote for Sturridge+Matuidi.
Foolish thinking maybe but I can only see positives.

I also love getting left on another article!!! πŸ™„

  9. HBA to me was the player of the night, however Sammy had a great game when he came on and scored a cracking goal!!
As for Alan Smith, I though he had a very good game (and yes I know it was against Darlo) but to me showed that the still has it (not being byast as my son got his shirt!! lol)
From the game starting to look forward to the new season with all the other new players still to come in… πŸ™‚

  10. I agree Nathan – I believe he will be a bit hit from the start… His movement is great, his passing in fantasic! and the lad has one hell of a shot on him… If the player is talented enough, he can fit into any league in the world immediately… I believe Cabaye is very talented

  11. Just want to reiterate that the article wasn’t a criticism of cabaye the lad. I’ve liked the look of him for the last 3 years or so since we’ve first been linked with him. I also feel that he has the quality and temperament of a possible future captain.
I just feel like we have to give him time and not get down on him if he puts in a string of poor performances.

  12. Jersey…I agree with you but there will be a few who get on his & Pardew’s if he fails to settle in immediately…they’ll be some who whine if he doesn’t score a hat trick first game πŸ˜€

What a show of absolute disrepect to Darlington Football Club, and the people of Darlington.

  20. Cabaye is a good player, has a great range of passing, took some good corners. He works hard aswell and was fitter than the rest, obviouly due to his involvement in the France friendlies. Vuckic was dissapointing, I know he’s been injured and out for various amounts of time but he actually looks worse than he did a couple of seasons ago to me. Pehaps it’s unfair to judge anyone in the first pre-season friendly but im talking about his general decision making and spacial awareness not his fitness. Ben Arfa grew into the game and started to show his quality on the end. He needs to protect himself from challenges like he did last night and he should be fine. Simpson was poor, his basic control let him down on several occasions. Best was pretty good and really should have scored at least one in the first half if it wern’t for some good saves. Sammy Ameobi is quick, direct yet creative. He can get to the by-line and whip a decent cross in aswell. He can play as a wide forward on either the left or the right. Definately one to look out for in the future. I hope they can manage it so that he can bulk up a bit without losing his pace. Mehdi Abeid looked like a great player I was really impressed by him loads of skill and technique. Tavernier is now much better and he is fast aswell. It won’t be long before he is better than Simpson IMHO if he isn’t already.

  28. Out of all the players last night Sammi proved the most imo, he was taking on players, Running at the back line, going out wide and putting a few decent crosses. He is loooking very good and hope he will get a few starts or subs next season.

Cabaye should be fine, he was in a league winning side in France and thats a great league.

  29. Cabaye has the look of a more mobile Paul Scholes. As a player i mean not the ginger napper. If he’s half as good as scholes he will be a legend here. After all ginger bollox scored most of his goals at St. James’

  30. Also, hasn’t been mentioned, but Gosling and the young french lad had good cameos. Tough selections in midfield next year. 2 worst players last night were Simpson (overweight for a young lad/unfit) and Ryan Taylor (struggled to get to pace of game – worrying when you remember it was only Darlington)

  34. Great article this highlights one of my concerns that I have previously talked about on the blog. It probably wouldn’t have been an issue had Nolan still been at the club but now we are in a situation where players are under pressure to hit the ground running and I used the same examples of Colo and Enrique to show that does not always happen.

      (Quote)

  35. I do think that Cabaye will be a brilliant player though but needs time to settle in. Time that unfortunately he may not have.

      (Quote)

  36. Cabaye seemed to live up to his ‘water carrier’ tag last night. He was busting a gut to show for the ball and kept everything very simple. He showed a good range of passing with some defence splitting balls and good set pieces.

I can’t wait to see him playing alongside Tiote with the likes of HBA, Jonas, marveaux etc playing infront. If we can get the LB and striker situation sorted, things look promising! Fergie’s injury has to see us move for someone.

Great to see Abeid and Ameobi make and impact as well. Vuckic was average at best and give the ball away on a number of occasions.

  37. both JB & YC have Excellent vision, some fab 40-50 yard passes by both.
In The PL, put YC inside right and Jb outside right, tiote in the middle Ferguson left, HBA playing off Ba, is that Diamond formation ?
