Game on! Columbus Crew v Newcastle

The Crew, beware...
In the early hours of the morning we play our third and final game of what has so far been an unsuccessful tour of America. Our opponents for the game are the Columbus Crew; let’s hope their team isn’t as good as their name is. The game starts at 7:30 in America which is 12:30 our time, so once again I’ll be staying up.

Our team should welcome the return to grass after our last game was played on a plastic pitch, hopefully we won’t need any excuses this time. We’re without a win and without a goal so far in this tour of the USA so hopefully that can change tonight, with a win and a good performance, I’m not holding my breath though.

Tonight’s game at the “Crew Stadium” – imaginative isn’t it – the ground where the Columbus Crew play their home games will have a large number of American Newcastle fans taking up a chance they don’t get very often to see their beloved Magpies. Columbus Crew should be a test for us as they finished 5th in the MLS last season but now we’re back on grass and have had longer to get used to the weather I expect a tighter game and a better performance.

There is no definite news on who is going start, but I’d expect Demba Ba to start after not featuring much in the Orlando game, also we should get another look at our younger players with Mehdi Abeid, James Tavernier and Haris Vuckic all rivalling the regulars for a first team place. But the one I’m interested in seeing play is Sylvain Marveaux, so hopefully he gets at least a sub appearance tonight.

The list of absentees is growing with every game as NUFC are now without Yohan Cabaye, Joey Barton, Nile Ranger, Danny Simpson, Ryan Taylor, Shane Ferguson, Danny Guthrie and Hatem Ben Arfa. This coupled with doubts over Fabricio Coloccini and Cheik Tiote could leave us with a weak and inexperienced team for tonights game.

Also I would not be surprised if Jose Enrique was dropped for tonights game after his little outburst on Twitter. Paul Dummett from the development squad was called up this week so I’d expect him to get a run out tonight; otherwise it would have been pointless paying for him to come to America, and that wouldn’t please Mikey.

Once again the important thing from this game is to come out of it without any further injuries, a win and a hatful of goals would be very nice but a fully fit squad is what we need. With our development squad scoring 8 goals in 3 games in Holland the senior lads need to step up their game tonight to prevent being shown up. I think I’ll stick my neck out and go for Demba Ba to open his Newcastle account today.

Unfortunately there will be no video stream tonight, but I’ve heard in numerous places that there will be a radio stream for fans to listen to the game on the Columbus Crew website. I’m sure I’m not the only one looking forward to the crazy American commentators, so come on lads; it’d be nice for some of you to stay up and give me a little bit of company. Newcastle United team news: Steve Harper, James Tavernier, Fabricio Coloccini, Steven Taylor, Jose Enrique, Sylvain Marveaux, Cheik Tiote, Dan Gosling, Jonas Gutierrez, Demba Ba, Shola Ameobi

Bench: Alan Smith, Mehdi Abeid, Leon Best, Tim Krul, Fraser Forster, Haris Vuckic, Paul Dummett

Any questions about the radio stream give me a shout and I will do anything I can to help, apart from that… Howay the lads!

  1. Ba and Gosling had a few chances each. Sounds like they’re missing that crucial “sharpness,” but that will hopefully come as the rust drops away. Ba was credited with the assist for Vukic, at least, so he’s certainly involved in the attack, even if he’s not on the score sheet.

  2. Newkie – Yeah he broke the rules, but some common sense should be used. It was a friendly with no need to send him off. I think it was harsh. Yellow at worst just to acknowledge he did wrong.

  3. Toonsy..maybe, but I’m certainly not in a friendly mood when we’re in need of a performance, so I’ll take it 😉 . Plus, with the MLS still halfway through their season, this should be a match to keep him sharp, not fanny around in. It doesn’t really matter about getting sent off in this kinda thing, he should be glad, he’s got more chance of avoiding it in an important match in the future.

  4. I just spent the last twenty minutes reading the comments on that facebook page! Good times!

Nice win for our beloved magpies. Hope it gives them a lift & some sharpness.

    ‘Night all.

  5. Sounded like Gosling had a really good game. Think he will prove to be an able deputy for Tiote when he is serving his bans!!

what do you say guys… I hope we dont get too much injuries and by bringing 2 quality players and not loosing any of the quality players we can give any team run for the money. i added few young players in this to give them game time and am sure they all have proven that they can match it with teh big boys! bring it on…wow

  8. Defoe rumours are very interesting. I would take him without question and give him the no9 shirt. He is exactly what we need, a poacher to play off Ba / Strolla. Erdinc is a smokescreen according to S Wraith 🙄 but wouldnt mind if this happens

  9. Max-T-Million – Remember only players over 21 back on January need to be named in the 25 do you can take out about eight of your squad and they can still play.

  10. What time does the Columbus game kick off tonight and is it on stream? 😕

  11. @lesh 😉

I’m on late shift tonight so finish at 11pm. Get home, crack open a few cans and watch it on the computer. Anyone know a good stream?

  12. Bobby games happened already we lost 10-0 and pardew has said he cant get another striker because erdinc is too old 😀

  13. Bobby, the Pont used to be good for trout…… dunno what it’s like nowadays, probably dried up!!!

  14. Jermaine Defoe, now thats just what we need, brilliant striker at the peak of his game, fingers crossed.

  15. Lesh steve stone had to play on the wing as jonas, marveux and vuckic all got injured!

  16. And Forster came on and did a great job at LB, which Pards has said will savethe club at least £5million and we can now flog Jose

  17. Batty 😆 😆 😆

I see George Best and Alex Higgins are pleased now they’ve heard there is going to be a Winehouse in heaven 😳
