Can we live without Joey Barton?

So long, farewell....
I’m hardly one of those Legal Eagle type people but I’m pretty sure that somewhere along the line Joey Barton would have had one of those “I promise not to be a complete ****” clauses inserted in his contract.

It may have been related to him punching people in the street, or maybe punching people on the training ground, or maybe punching people during a televised Premier League match. Or maybe they had in mind his creative use of a teenager’s eye as an ashtray or the way he used Xabi Alonso as a doormat. No matter what the cause, there would have been a clause.

Ahhh the sheer Poetry!!

Following his last outburst he would have been taken aside and told “Now, now, Joseph. No more silliness or I’ll count to 5…. !”

Joseph chose to be silly and the counting is, I suspect, complete.

To change the subject briefly I’m half way through writing a little piece on “loyalty”. I have never understood this bizarre idea that a footballer, being paid for providing a service, or lets say “plying his trade”, should be expected to show loyalty when a better deal comes along.

Imagine, you are stacking shelves at the local Co-Op and someone comes along from Tesco’s and offers you an extra hundred quid a week to stack their shelves instead.

How long would loyalty play a part in your decision?

I was, and still am, determined to show that in 99.9% of all cases – loyalty is the stuff of fairytales. It is, to put it in laymans terms, a complete load of bollocks. Does your plumber show loyalty? The woman at the Post Office? Your local News Reader?

No. And why should they?

Notice that I said that it was only in 99.9% of cases that loyalty was a load of bollocks.

So what about the other 0.1%? What’s that all about?

That other 0.1% is Joey Barton.

If anyone should show loyalty it is Joey Barton.

If anyone should keep it zipped when others are gobbing off, it’s Joey Barton.

If anyone was treated more than fairly, against all odds, it was Joey Barton.

If anyone was given a chance by the club when even the fans said he should be dumped, it was Joey Barton.

So if anyone deserves to be kicked out for being a complete ****, it has to be………well, figure it out yourself.

Andy Carroll – 35 million pounds. Unbelievable deal. Dumb to turn it down.

Kevin Nolan – wanted a 13 million pound commitment, couldn’t get it, went somewhere he could.

Jose Enrique – wants European Football, cant get it – out there actively lobbying

Joey Barton – wants, well I’m not really sure what he wants.

This is hardly the Teletubbies that we are talking about here.

The only reason that Barton has been transfer listed as a freebie is because the money saved on his salary equals roughly his expected transfer fee. Enrique should thank his lucky stars that he’s more bankable.

Last season I posted weekly assessments of all the matches.

I slated Barton almost every week.

Over the whole season I think I gave him one man of the match and just could not understand why everyone was raving so much about him.

We now have three or four midfielders who can distribute the ball better than Barton, can tackle better, are faster, and in all likelihood will make it through the season without punching anyone.

We can live without him.

Note from Toonsy – Thanks to Archie Brand for giving us this rather controversial and alternative vuewpoint on the Joey Barton situation.

If the club want to put out all these false statements via the Chronicle, then let them do that. Everyone here knows, I speak the truth…..

what Lee Rider colaborating with the Toon chiefs… doubt it Joey, that would never happen… 😯

  4. I toned down the original title on behalf of Archie by the way 😕

Yes we can live without Barton. People bang on about not winning a game without him but that is kind of irrelevant. Did we never win a game before Barton came along like?

End of the day I’m gutted it’s ended like this and that it looks as though Barton is off, but at the end of the day I can’t really say I’m surprised. Barton’s tweets may have truth in them – we know all about the owner – but I can’t help but think this has been planned from day one of Barton going on Twitter.

He is a bright lad and will have known that he is pushing buttons with people and eventually made them upstairs snap.

  5. Players, managers, owners … even grounds can all be changed.

For better or for worse but they are all transient.

    Fans are the football club.

Can we live without Joey, yes of course.

I’d rather live without Ashley & Llambias, and they can take their puppet with them as the door of St James’ slams on their @rses.

It will happen one day, and what a day that will be.

    Brown ale or two anyone?

  6. not one win without him in the squad last season say enough for me… NO! we cant!

      (Quote)

  7. It’s not controversial to slag off Joey Barton, though I’m interested as to who these midfielders are?

Tiote – Brilliant player, but on the same level as Joey (especially on the card front)
Marveaux – Unproven, comes from a weaker league, injury problems
Cabaye – Looks decent but still unproven, and as above comes from a weaker league
Jonas – Dribbles decently and puts a good effort in but that’s about it. Gets shown up often, especially internationally. Fans have taken to him because they wish for a decent Ginola facsimile (which N’Zogbia was, by the way)
Gosling – Decent, but not a tiger like Joey
Ben Arfa – Promising but unproven
    Smith – A liability
    Vuckic – Unproven

This isn’t objective – this is just “I don’t like Joey and everyone else does so I’m going to try and make everyone see that he’s a thug”.

The squad is pathetically weak, we’re hanging on to people like Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson and Ameobi and pretending that they’re anywhere near the quality required. They aren’t, but nothing has been done about it. Pardew knows this, but doesn’t have any dignity or any kind of guts. Llambias and Ashley are making the decisions. This is why it’s important Joey spoke out, no matter the intentions. To show publically how the club is being systematically gutted by these two idiots, and at least try and get some of those gullible ‘you have to stand behind the club’ fans who would go every week even if Ashley renamed the club to Fuckwits United to see the bigger picture. After all, if an FA tribunal can prove that they lied to the fans (and Keegan) and people can still back them over Joey, something is seriously wrong.

  8. And I see Barton has just been fined two weeks wages. And he is appealing it.

Quite surprised that a lot of people on Twitter are asking him to give it a rest.

I wonder what this truth is he i banging on about? He should get it out in the open. He has nowt to lose now does he so why not let everyone know exactly what his beef is? 😕

“not one win without him in the squad last season say enough for me… NO! we cant!”

What about before that? You know, when he was unavailable/injured/suspended/in prison?

He is just a football player. Get a fucking grip man. Football players come and go. More fool you Spence for thinking otherwise…

  15. For me the situation we have here is FAR more about squad depth than an individual. The old cliche “nobody bigger than the club” will always ring true in situations like this, but that isn’t gona make the sh1tstorm we’re in dissipate. What really rankles with me is exactly what Archie has mentioned in this article, but for different reasons I.E. the club has stuck with him through thick and thin, through hell and high water, through all his ineffective performances, and we decide to sell him, for nowt, JUST as he seems to be hitting his peak!!!!

For me this is all about him having the nerve (!) to speak out, ooh, what a naughty boy. Of course he’s gona kick off in the changing room after the Leeds game, he can see the glaring holes in the squad, and knows more about fatty and owl heed’s plans than we do. He’s kicked off because he cares; and been kicked out by two who don’t.

As Freddy Shepherd as so succinctly put it in his recent Talksport interview…..”They should have just swallowed it [the Twitter criticism] and given him a clip!”

  16. Maybe once or twice, but at this rate we’re going to turn into a bunch of pounces like arsenal that don’t fight.

But I think we are in for a bumpy ride next season, and not an enjoyable one at that.

  17. “Can we live without Joey Barton?”

Is there more stupid question of this? The answer is so simple… We’ve been without him in the first 2.5 years of his contract. Not only we can live without him, but we can be better… but this depends on his replacement.

      (Quote)

  18. al this twittering I think he’s addicted nd lost the plot. Won’t look too good for future employers.

I can’t see anyone giving him a 4 year deal on his current wages. way too much risk involved there.

His best contract offer will probably be the one he turned down from us…

  19. @SpencerTheTooN

agree m8. But if we replace him with a quality signing we may be better off for it…

S Parker is still available.. but his wage, age and contract expectations rule out any move.

      (Quote)

  20. “But if we replace him with a quality signing”

Give me one instance where we have done that with Ashley in charge?

Dont use Nolan for Cabaye because Cabaye is unproven in the premier league.

  21. Toonsy i would like to think that u would agree on one point.

When Barton was Jailed, who was the captain? Owen? Is he a decent captain? No right.

What i am referring is that Yes,The club can still go on,but missing out two great Leaders +Alan Smith(gotta admit he is great leader.Even thought he is gone in footballing skills), it will affect the whole team.

You don’t expect Life to go on as per “norm” right as of now? The Question is, HOW LONG will it take to be back to norm?

Is Colo able to withstand such huge pressure on his shoulders to once again stablise the team moral?

Even Harper doesn’t seems to get many games i reckon in the new season.

      (Quote)

  22. Maybe the next question is , can Barton live without Newcastle united ? i can tell you’s all now . There is not many clubs fans that would welcome him to their club . He was playing in the last chance saloon here and he is so stupid he does not yet comprehend that , but he will when whichever club dares to take him presents him to the public .

      (Quote)

  23. I would suggest that Joey Barton HAS shown loyalty.

I suppose it depends how you define loyalty though? If it’s sitting there for the duration of your contract picking up a massive wage playing the odd bit of footy, such as Alan Smith or the Scarlet pimpernel, Xisco, then yeah, they are showing incredible loyalty. Neither of them have requested a move. They simply don’t want to go. It’s just so **** good this club, and they are just the loyalest of the loyals.

Now let’s look at it another way. How about loyalty being an act caused by feeling? How about it being as a result of how you feel about being here? Being part of this club? Imagine you love being here. You really love the club, the area and the fans.

In fact you don’t just enjoy all that, you care about it and them. You care about it so much that despite the negative impact it will probably have on your choice of future club, you are prepared to speak out because you know something is inhernetly wrong at the club. There’s a cancer in the club, and as others have started speaking out, so too must you.

You wanted to play for the club so much, that you offered to take a pay cut for your new deal, but no dice. This player of the year approaching his prime was told he wasn’t wanted by the wise powers that be. Certainly NOT the manager’s decision.

How long would YOU carry on with this charade of being lied to by your manager, MD and owner? Knowing that whilst you are not totally privvy to what is going on behind closed doors, you are certainly far closer to it and more aware than virtually every fan. Imagine YOU knew that they were just lying their way through this and using Pardew as the fall guy, what would you do about it?

Would you just ‘appear’ loyal, bite the bullet and carry on as if nothing happened? Would you just turn a blind eye? Or would you realise that there are so many cracks appearing, and so many others are making comment that to avoid doing so would be to just turn the other cheek and pretend it’s nothing to do with you.

Some people care enough to help expose situations, even if it opens a can of worms. Some people care enough to just keep on picking up their pay packet and keeping quiet under the guise of loyalty.

Oh, and let’s crowbar in here somewhere the MASSIVE and I mean MASSIVE (Hence the double capitals) hypocrisy in bringing up every bad thing Barton has done in the past – everything you can think of is pre this season (bar the pathetic reaction from Pedersen).

Just how many threads were there about his colourful past during the 2010/11 season?

    Anybody?

There must have been loads surely? I mean, the way forum’s are lighting up about him now it must surely have been a major issue during the season?

    No?

    Why’s that then?

Anything to do with him generally growing up and playing some excellent football, showing commitment, passion and desire to keep us pushing for that top 10?

    I thought so.

The attacks on this board and many others on Barton are like stale marriages, where the husband or wife take it in turns to bring up past misdemeanours from years gone by, because it suits their argument at the time. It doesn’t matter what the actuality of the situation is now. What matters is getting one over, winning your point and using any means to do so.

Ignore what’s in front of you and concentrate on the past by all means, but don’t expect things to ever improve.

We’ve got Tiote who could probably stop a train if he was asked to, and then there’s Jonas and Enrique playing tag up the left – all very good , but no creativity.
As for teh comment about going 2 -0 down and not fighting back if Bartons not there – I’d rather not go 2 – 0 down.

  33. The CC match against Chelski was one of my favourite matches last season. We showed we can turn the tide against the best . Fair enough we didn’t go down, but at 3-3 Chelsea were massively in the ascendancy. No Barton, no Nolan, No Carroll. Ameobi captain I think? Though I think hoots deserves his fair share of the praise for that one.

So yes, we can live without Barton..though I would much rather have him stay and get this all cleared up. 3 quality signings might change my mind like, but can’t see it atm.

      (Quote)

  34. @42- that’s what’s been missing for awhile IMO. But Ben Arfa, Vuckic and Cabaye should bring some of that.

Spence- true. But Cabaye’s played in CL, Europa, and internationally at every level. Not like he’s never seen quality compeition.

  35. The club absolutely need to bring in quality additions to the team now. Striker, winger, fullback at the least

  36. Rodzilla, agree, no one is bigger than the club, players and owners move on and we are left with the consequences, Barton and the board have been un professional for this situation becoming public, the club for renaging on a verbal agreement and Barton for his reaction.
I dont think Barton has been too critical, at least he is giving us an insight into the club as no one else is, he is being dealt with by an iron fist, i would like Llambias to get the same, right up his jacksie!

      (Quote)

  37. A lot of sense there Michael Laudrup. It is incompetence at the top that is killing us. Fine get rid of Barton, but why for free? No communication from management because they are afraid to reveal their incompetence once again. Ashley would hire a decent football man if he had any desire to make Newcastle a truly competitive team. Make us like Arsenal? What a joke. Arsenal don’t have Del the chimp in charge. They may not be winning any trophies but the are in the Champions League every year. They have people with real brains in charge. The bin man would be better than what we have.

      (Quote)

  38. I’m not on twitter, can someone please tell Joey Barton to stfu. Doing my head in, we really shouldn’t be hearing any of this. Everyone has a bone to pick with Ashley and co. but he hasn’t been sacked or fined without reason, no need to be so public until he leaves.

I like the look of Cabaye but the rest of the signings dont look all that, we won’t buy a replacement for Joey until he’s off the wage book, no doubt Jose will leave at last minute and Pardew can yet be again the bearer of bad news that we were unable to spend the money and Chelsea turned down our 5 bob offer for ashley cole yada yada yada

  42. Probably the same people who were voting him player of the year now trying to tell us that we don’t need him anyway and never did.
Hypocritical jellyfish, the lot of you.

The fact is he should have been given proper contract talks and a proper contract on the strength of last season anyway. Then all of this would never have happened. Let’s not forget we didn’t win without him last season. And no, Toonsy, that doesnt mean we’ve never won prior to Barton and it doesn’t mean we won’t win once he’s gone.
It does, however, clearly demonstrate that last season when he WAS here, just how important he was to the team.

  45. Whoops posted it on the wrong thread. 😳 there we are.

Of course we can live without Barton and Nolan/Carroll/Enrique for that matter. But I am extremely sad about loosing Barton as he is one of my favorit players.
Gotta say neither of the sides Barton or the board has conducted themselves gracefully in this shamble and we, the fans, stand yet again on the side being fed lies and strange statements and what not. Wish he would’ve stayed but players come and go, but Newcastle United will still stand. And Joey, thanks for everything, still think you’re top player.

And please for god sake, stop saying Cabaye is untested and such, the lad has played Ligue 1 and in europe nearly every season for Lille, plus international youth for france and now a full france international. Come on, its not like he from the kashastan league two………

      (Quote)

  46. Yes, the board should have just given him a contract, but Joey pushes them to this decision rather than just shutting up and proving on the field why he deserved the contract he wanted.

  49. Michael Laudrup – interesting slant on the Barton thing.
Couple of things I’d like to ask. First of all you argue the cause of lotalty whereas I am arguing the act. At best you can argue that by doing what he’s doing he’s being loyal to the fans, but it wasn’t the fans that allowed him stay following his numerous problems. The majority of the fans at the time, in numerous polls said we should dump him.
I’m talking loyalty to the people who kept him here and gave him the opportunity to do what he did last season. The people who paid him 60 grand a week. Do you think he has been loyal to those people? Check the definition of loyalty before you answer.
I also find it very convenient that you want to forget about everything that Barton has done in the past. Why would you think that is acceptable?
When Shearer played his last season, we dont remember him because he scored 10 goals in 2005 / 2006, we remember everything that came before.
Do you really expect us to just forget Bartons past because he had a good season?
Bartons past is what Barton is all about. Yes Pederson went down like a Quayside Hooker but Barton still punched him.
There’s a time and place for everything. This is not Hypocrisy, this is relevance.
Do you honestly believe that Barton has magically “Grown Up”?
What is actually in front of us here is Barton slagging off his company and his management.
By the way – Pootle – I’ve been slagging Barton off for years.

  52. This article is spot on. Why is everyone so up in arms because of this muppet? For all I don’t like the people at the to you don’t see them using Twitter to throw their toys out of the pram. Remember the stupid tackle under Shearer’s tenure? The jail term? The people who booed him then are the same ones who are outraged now.

Get him out now and draw a line under the whole sorry situation. AND BAN SOCIAL MEDIA for the rest of the players.
