Obertan deal confirmed?

Five-year deal for Obertan?
Newcastle look to be signing Manchester United utility man Gabriel Obertan if the gossip lines are to be believed.

The 22-year-old former Bordeaux man will complete his move to Newcastle early next week and will put pen to paper on a five-year deal with NUFC having to pay somewhere in the region of £3 million for the services of the once highly-rated Frenchman, meaning that Manchester United will have recouped what they paid for him two seasons ago.

Whether or not there is any truth in this remains to be seen however as the only hints we have are a bit in the Daily Mail, a bit of gossip on Twitter, plus people putting 2+2 together from the other day when Alan Pardew said that he’d been speaking to Alex Ferguson. Will the sums be correct? Time will tell…

I read a comment from DJG about Manchester United “rejects” and how he wasn’t generally overly enthused about them, and I tend to agree with that assessment. Alex Ferguson rarely makes errors of judgement when releasing players, but it does happen. The problem is that for every Diego Forlan or Phil Neville there is an Alan Smith or Nicky **** to counterbalance the argument. Again like DJG though, I feel that Obertan would be a decent shout for us.

Once upon a time, back in France, Obertan was very highly-rated and was tipped for big things. He was a fast, tricky winger who excited people and his skills ensured that he represented his home country at every youth level right up to (and including) the U21 level. Then he moved to Manchester United aged just 20 and things kind of fell apart for the lad. No longer was he getting regular first-team football.

He is a talent, but I also think he suffered from the pressure of playing for Manchester United a bit, Perhaps a week in, week out role at Newcastle will help him get back on track? Like or not, he would get a week in, week out role at Newcastle, especially when you consider that he can play right-wing, centre-midfield and as a striker.

So what next? Well I guess I better find the obligatory YouTube video. I did track one down that was just full of skills, flicks and tricks which was good to watch but in fairness it isn’t representative of what Obertan would be doing for the full 90 minutes. However I did find this one which shows a bit more of what he is about.

Good move? Bad move? Time will tell. I was rather shocked to see a comment suggesting that this signing (if it happens) was purely out of desperation. Hello? Are we not kind of desperate? Has there not been mass hysteria over our lack of transfer activity? Will this solve it? Probably not…

However there is nothing to suggest that he can’t be a good signing for us. Playing for Manchester United and playing for Newcastle United are two different things if you take the emotion out of it, and at least Obertan has time on his side unlike our previous signings from Old Trafford!

As ever though, we’ll have to see if anything official becomes of this.

  5. Who were those fughing mooks he was playing against in the video? Oh.

Dunno. Seems like an upgrade over Routers, but then Routers has goals in him (at least in the championship).

Any official word on this or is it all Daily Mail scraping the bottom of the barrel to keep toon fans clicking?

  6. Few things that worry me about the post you linked fansshouldowntheclub , first pardew admiting the players might not be mentally ready for next season 😕 and Shane Ferguson could be playing left back of Jose leaves.

  9. Johnotoon@84…agree with your comment about Pardew’s statement about the mental well-being of the toon before the season starts. Flippin heck thats all part of his job.
It all goes to show what a tough job it is to get everybody pulling in one direction for the team. Hopefully Pardew has the skills to achieve that, and that the backroom staff are all also backing him up. We need to get off to a good start so that everyone can start to settle down, both the team and fans. One or two more “good” signings would go a long way to helping.

  10. FSOC….maybe CH let more things go, and allowed the senior pro’s to have more say on things…?

  11. Routledge out Obertan in, great business in my opinion!

He’s played 14 times since going to Man United so he hasn’t had a great chance at impressing, plus with players like Giggs etc ahead of him.

Now please for Gods sake sign a striker…

  12. Yeah MM a couple of new signings would settle the players and the fans. Key for next season is for our new players settling in. Once they settled we have the making of a good first 11 and a half decent squad imo.

Andrew according the the never wrong cwrr007 we are going after Shane Long. So ill guess a striker from a eurpean league coming in 🙂

  14. FSOC@100…there’s a lot to be said for having a concensus among the players.
I’m sure it could be tricky at the toon, where several new players have arrived. At the same time, the new players are supposedly “Pardew”s players” so the mutual respect should be there already. I suppose the issue will be as to how the “old guard” welcome the new players into the club. We all also know that the French have a bit of edge about them anyway…challenging times for Pardew…

At most German clubs the players have a committee, usually made up of the captain plus two others, who represent the players towards the management where issues need to be clarified. Typically if the players think they are playing the wrong tactics, club discipline etc etc. That way the players have a theoretical unified stance, and egos are less to the fore..

  15. MM @ 109 I think that responsability will fall to Colo
Army after next week we will get back to watching footie 😉 all good things come to they that wait 😀 but I must say it has been one miserable wait

  16. Big Dave…I think Collo’s got that respect among the players, hope he can get it sorted.
No-one else springs to mind as captain to be honest. Flippin heck, you could imagine what would be going on now if the radgie had been given the armband… 😯

  17. Army69…..you need to stock up on toon dvd’s mate…. 😆
    Must admit, it’s been a long close season… 🙁

  18. MM I think if things had of been sorted Joey would have made a good Captain, but I also thing Saylor has all the ingredients to make a good Captain 😉

  19. BigD…nice vid of Obertan. I hope this comes off, cos the lad seems a canny player. Think he’ll do really well if he gets a run out in the team. Fingers crossed…

I agree with you regarding Taylor, I think he has the potential to be captain. But JB is a loose cannon, it would only be a matter of time before he went of on a radge again. He hasn’t got his mates round him backing him up any more.. 😯

  20. Lads – Does anyone else think that we will bring striker in next week and then once we know who the no one goalie in sell Forster to Celtic because it won’t be him and get izzaguirre in exhange for a few quid?

  21. Dave

Hopefully well see some more of that here, Midfield is looking good on paper and with strength ing depth.

If we can get some cover across the back four and the finsher we lack things definately looking up…

  22. MM I do sort of agree with you on Joey I can remember seeing him lose it with another player cause the player didn’t seem to be giving his all, I think it was Jose. But I was watching FF the day and I think it was Robbie Savage said that they think Joey would be a good signing and he would benefit from having top top players around him, which I think is true

  23. CC I am really frustrated that we have needed a Good quality Striker from the start of the year and still havn’t got one yet 👿

  24. Liam what makes you think celtic will let izzaguirre go and while we’re on that I know a lot of people have been talking about how good izzaguirre is remember how good Bumsong looked at the Gers 😉

  26. Congrats Toonsy! Always nice to hear good news.

As for Obertan, I definitely think he will improve the squad. I’m sure he has learned a trick or two from Giggs, Nani, Valencia etc as well!!!

  27. I think hes a good signing meself, bit raw yes, just needs game time, but will turn out to be good signing in the long run, plus when we go to sell, should get a lot more for him 2 or 3 years down the line 😆
