Game on! Newcastle v Fiorentina.

The cathedral on the hill.
Coming home Newcastle!
Well that’s just about it for pre-season as today signals the final friendly match ahead of the big kick-off against Arsenal next week.

Seria A outfit Firoentina are the visitors today as Alan Pardew and Co look to finalise their pre-season preparations against one of the stronger opponents that we’ll have faced over the summer.

Kick-off is at 3pm and those going to the match can expect to see the vast majority of our new arrivals in action for the vast majority of the game according to John Carver. That means that we are likely to see another full game for Yohan Cabaye with, hopefully, appearances from Sylvain Marveaux and Demba Ba for good measure.

Hatem Ben Arfa continues his recovery from an ankle ligament injury along with Shane Ferguson and Danny Guthrie although both are said to be recovering well from their respective injuries. Cheik Tiote is still away in Ghana sorting out “Visa issues” whilst Joey Barton will sit on the naughty step for the match thanks to his Twittering so neither of those be featuring either.

The team is as follows:

Newcastle: Tim Krul, Danny Simpson, Jose Enrique, Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, Dan Gosling, Yohan Cabaye, Haris Vuckic, Jonas Gutierrez, Peter Lovenkrands, Leon Best.

Subs: Fraser Forster, Ryan Taylor, Mike Williamson, Sylvain Marveaux, Nile Ranger, James Tavernier, Sammy Ameobi, Shola Ameobi, Demba Ba.

Fiorentina finished in 9th place in their domestic league last season as they continue to rebuild the club back to the glory days of days gone by. They should, in theory, be a little bit behind us in terms of preparation as the Italian season starts two weeks later than ours which mean that we should be that little bit fitter.

All in all a nice run out, a win, and no injuries would be a great result for the day as Newcastle appear in front of their own fans for the first time since the final day of last season. Hopefully the new lads and some of the young’uns can show the fans what they are about.

If anyone knows of an internet stream where we can catch the match then please feel free to share with your fellow Newcastle fans. Personally I don’t hold out much hope so I’ll settle for anything – even radio.

Howay the lads!

  3. Guys I have a head to head league set up on Premierleague.com for Newcastle fans. There are 11 spaces left. Code to join is 139461-54775.
It pitches us up against each other every week and bases points the same as any other league, i.e 1 point for a draw, 3 for a win. It will add up the points your players accumulate and compare that to your opponent for the week, then from there you get a goal difference… Good fun and adds a bit of extra spice to the classic style of Dream Teams.
It’s free, quick and easy so get on board whilst spaces are free! 🙂

  7. obertan deal done medical on monday pardew just said. Good signing i think. Given a run of games could be very good

  8. I reckon Obertan might be a decent bit of business, got a few of his compatriots around him too. Worth a punt at under £5m and we still have pennies left over for further signings touch wood!

  9. I just hope that Obertan is not the only signing next week ,we need a striker at least before the Arsenal game and the defence needs a couple more as well ,and thats before Enrique leaves . The lack of numbers at the back is worrying .

  10. I think a striker and left back will be all the remaining business if any, depending on if Enrique goes or not. We can run until January giving the likes of Kadar, Vukic and Ferguson a go at backing up the 1st team. I’m surprised we still have so much dead wood in the ranks, would have thought the likes of Perch, Smith, Ranger, Xisco would be gone by now. Granted Smith and Xisco are on big wages but a loan deal for the season half paid for by us can’t be totally out of the question surely? Still saves us some money…

  11. Yeah, we really need to get rid of Xisco & smith in some way. Obertan will be alright, but I doubt he’ll affect too much.
Really need to bring in a defender, regardless of Jose staying. Obviously need another striker too

  12. Just the one I think. The article is a bit unclear and brings up Sinisa Mihajlovic next to Obertan’s name, but that’s just the Fiorentina manager.

  13. Crouch scores after 5 mins….

Have to admit he gets the goals no matter how much people slag him off. Don’t think he’s for us though.

  14. feel real sorry for ashley hes just lost 203mill in shares crash, maybe only one signing then 😀

  15. Trouble is Smith has already said that he would stay for the last year of his contract and that after Leeds were reported to want him . Deportiva were supposed to want Xisco back a couple of weeks ago aswell but that has gone quiet and as for Perch well which blue square premier league team could afford him 😆 Ranger i can see staying after all if Pardew would offer Barton an olive branch then why not our resident gangsta .The real trouble with this transfer period is not being able to shift the dead wood and free up places in the 25 man squad and getting their wages off the books . Its like someone posted the other day Ashley will not pay players that cannot play because of the 25 man squad rules .
