Pieters interest confirmed?

Erik Pieters - Making the toon really turn orange?
It seems as though the reported interest in PSV Eindhoven left-back could have some substance after reports in Holland indicated that we do indeed hold an interest in the player.

Forgive me for being sceptical of the British media, but when it’s only them that are linking us to a particular player I tens to overdose on salt. However when other media outlets, notably more reliable foreign press, start reporting things I tend to take a bit more notice of transfer rumours.

Reports in Holland, namely from Dutch website fcupdate, confirm that Graham Carr was at the match and claim that he was watching the 23-year-old return from injury for PSV.

The interesting thing for me, and the bit that makes me think that we are indeed interested in Pieters, is the emergence of a unspecified release clause in his contract. Apparently it’s a rather low release clause, which just about sounds like something we’d be after doesn’t it?

As for the player, I actually don’t know anything about him. I know he is highly-rated in Holland and gets a glowing recommendation from some of our Dutch fans such as Axel who claims that he is “every bit as good as Enrique”. I don’t know about that but with 10 caps for The Netherlands he can’t be too shabby can he?

Apparently Pieters can also play at centre-back, so not only would it potentially sort our need for a left-back (regardless of whether or not Jose goes) it would also give us a bit more cover in the centre of defence. Two for the price of one? I’ll have that.

So is the interest confirmed? Well officially I guess not, but it is certainly more substantiated than a flimsy Daily Mail report.

  4. on the basis that he’s a current Holland International – ex Ajax academy -he’ll do for me – they divvent play many duck eggs. good news that we’ll get him for a song as well – FAt Mick must be lickin his lips – (while Dekka is lickin his ****).

    the nufc.co.uk website has a report of a reserve game which seems to have include a ‘french trialist’ – who by all accounts seemed to have a canny game like. i may have missed it on other threads (sorry) – but do we know who he is yet?

  7. tiote should play..if fit…barton no way…u cant put tiote and barton in the same team…fitness would be my main problem…gosling needs 2 play..he looks a star…and fitness he is getting…barton needs 2 sit this 1 out…cant see us starting with 2 new wide men..unless he plays 3 in the middle and 1 up front…hope he plays that…cant see him playing 2 up front against arsenal..

  12. Pieters sounds OK. Hope Tim Krul doesn’t get fined 2 weeks wages for “spilling the beans”. Obviously Fergie doesn’t rate Obertan & I’ve never known him let anyone go that’s any good – Danny Simpson perhaps?. Do we really need another wide player?

West Lanc Geordie , tho few and far between Fergie has let players go and have done evry well outside of Utd , Stam and Forlan spring to mind , he also wanted to include scholes in the deal for Andy Cole all those years ago but Keegan insisted on Gillespie. Red noes doesnt always get it right

    from what i can gather his football style is very simlar to that of routledge (H/C) except he’s about a foot & half taller.

    Eh, that’s one area I would say we’re at our weakest. Joey Barton isn’t a winger, so take him out the equation, who’ll play there? Raylor?

    Obertan is a good, young signing with pace and trickery, two of the things we’ve been missing. The situation reminds me of when Nani went to Man U, bags of pace and tricks but no real composure and lacked that coolness when picking out that final ball, if he can develop like he did we’ll have a great player on our hands.

  19. Sitting with 2 long term MU season ticket holders. They are delighted to have got shot of Obertan. Also re scholes, he was near the bottom of the academy at the time. It was Cantana who bought Scholes on and into the player he became. Gillespie was on fire that season when we got him.

  23. on a different note, so we’ve spent, in signing fees anyway, around £1 million this summer, if we get a new striker in, and a replacement for Enrique, I would say we’ve greatly improved the ‘quality’ of our squad.

  26. @ i love mike that looks like a really good attacking stick BA in there and we are in good shape. just the defence that worries me a little we let in far too many silly goals last season and we still havent improved the defence but like keegan says the best form of defence is attack just hope that works this season.

  37. This is where they get you in pre-season, do just about anything to get that lil bit more info.

    Pieters and a handy striker and I’ll be happy going forward this year, could do with a Phil Jones / Smalling type centre back coming through as one for the future. Will Kadar make it?

    11 v 11 we have a decent team, didnt think the liverpool team that won the CL were that brilliant but on their day they could beat anyone. Best we can hope for.

I am looking forward to saturday with Tiote and Cabaye in the cm i think Arsenal are their for the taking ,lets face it all is not well in their camp fabregas and Nasri wanting out and i wonder how much the riots down their will have affected them .

  62. Seemed weird. It was postedon FansFC and nowhere else, which is why I was dubious to start with, but I thought it might just be a new sign of desperation since the striker search has gone nowhere.
