When It’s Bad It’s Very Bad…#Managers

Dalglish could help us out

"How to dismantle a talented squad"- By Kenny Dalglish
The last position in this series is definitely the most important one as over the last two decades we’ve had some great managers, some average managers and some terrible managers.

Although individual players have an impact on the game, your ultimately not going to be successful if you have a poor manager, which would explain why we have underachieved in recent years…

There are three managers in my opinion that should be classed under the tag “terrible” and below you can vote for who you think was the worst of the worst.

Sam Allardyce: The only manager on here that I clearly remember watching us play under, Allardyce looked like he was on to a winner after some decent looking signings and a healthy looking squad. I don’t think fans would have minded as much if we had played badly but got the results, even that however was too elusive for Big Sam. He made us play the worst football I have witnessed as a Newcastle fan while still failing to earn decent results which saw us slide down the table. His reign at the club was for me epitomised in two games, both of which were against the same team: Derby County. We were the only team that season to be beaten by Derby which was bad enough, but the way we just lay down and accepted defeat that day was appalling. The return fixture wasn’t much better and we only managed to salvage a point, but I remember how disgusted the crowd (me included) were at the way we played that day.

Kenny Dalglish: Some may be surprised about the inclusion of Dalglish however under his reign we went from serious title contenders to 13th place. He effectively destroyed what was one of the best sides to grace the premier league, with the likes of David Ginola and Les Ferdinand being replaced by John Dahl Tommasson, John Barnes and Ian Rush. With Shearer being severely injured and Ferdinand and Asprilla being sold we needed someone that could consistently put the ball in the back of the net, but Dalglish failed to address this and as a result his time here could be be described as lacklustre at best.

Ruud Gullit: He arrived with a promise of sexy football and good results, but in reality he played average football, got very average results and was completely out of touch with the fans. It probably wasn’t the best idea to publicly criticise Alan Shearer and Rob Lee when results weren’t going his way. He alienated himself even further from the fans when he refused to give Lee a squad number, which was bizarre considering he was one of our best performers. Things came to ahead when he completely underestimated the Tyne-Wear derby and left Shearer and Ferguson on the bench, we lost that day 2-1 and he resigned three days later.

Well there’s the three nominees, I still haven’t decided who I’m going to vote for (speaks volumes eh?) but out of the three family members I asked they all answered differently.

  3. How can anyone vote for Allardyce when he just about lasted half a season ? That says something in my opinion about how eager some of our fans are to judge a manager, and how so many expect immediate success, which is stupid. Considering Allardyce had us well above the relegation zone and was still in the process of winning over all our rebelling players who were too stuck up to play his way, he was doing fine, it’s not going to be all rosey when Michael Owen is moaning at not being put straight back into the team after an injury and the other players are disagreeing with big Sam’s ways. I think Ashley was impatient and expected us to get in the top 5 inside 6 months, and didn’t stop to consider that things take time to happen, and apparently some of our gullable fans have been consumed and convinced by whoever started this hating of Allardyce. How dissappointing when you consider we are supposed to be amongst the best fans in the league.

  8. Barton has just arrived at St James Park with a kit bag in his hand says BBC…we look like such a laughing stock at the moment, telling him he can leave for nothing immediately, then making him train alone, then letting him back with the squad, and now putting him in the team ? That’s truly embarassing. ”Joey you can leave the club, we’re fed up of you. You will be training alone.” about a week later ”Joey you can train with the team we suppose.” another few days ”Joey, we would actually we happy to keep you for another year if you want. Fancy playing against Arsenal ?” COME ON !!
