Mali international determined to force Newcastle move.

Modibo Maiga wants Toon move.
It’s a bit “out there” this one, but it would appear that Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga has refused to play for the French outfit as he wants to join Newcastle.

I know what you’re thinking. Who? Same as me really.

To the best of my knowledge this is a new name that has been linked with although with our ability to pull rabbits out of hats in the transfer market I guess I really shouldn’t be surprised that we are in for someone that has so far gone unnoticed by everyone. I’m just waiting to see if he has some quirky contract or a full set of limbs. I’m sure there will be a catch somewhere…

This isn’t just another piece of speculation. There are actual quotes from the player who goes into some detail about an alleged bid from NUFC, his desire to move to the North East, and his disdain for the Sochaux board who are thus far refusing to discuss the possibility of the player moving away having only joined them last summer.

Maiga was asked by L’equipe if there had been an offer from Newcastle to which he replied: “Yes, but before the Newcastle offer I have not been offered anything, but now I would like the chairman to consider my interest. I want to leave.

“I met everyone at Newcastle. They want me and it is not just any club. Premier League is a dream. That is the kind of game I like, it suits me and it is good for my career. I want to leave, he has to accept that and negotiate.”

“I told the coach I would play and respect my contract, but the chairman has to talk about my transfer first. I don’t want to annoy Sochaux, but I want it to be sorted out with Newcastle.”

The rejected bid is believed to be in the region of £7 million, but it appears to have not been enough for the striker come winger who scored 15 goals last season. This has angered Maiga.

“Offers have now come for me and the chairman refused to talk,” he told L’Equipe. “I had a meeting with him and I could not accept his position, it is just like a big slap in the face.”

“It was the very first time I asked for something and I believe it is lack of respect. Why refusing to talk? It is selfish, I can’t understand.”

“You can’t refuse such an offer. The sums are huge, both for me and for the club. Sochaux will not lose.”

Well I did say it was a bit “out there”. Personally I’ve not heard anything about him but he seems to be highly rated. A quick look on YouTube (I know I know) doesn’t really pull up much. A few goals but not too much and certainly no clips over 30 seconds long. Another Graham Carr special perhaps?

There is one thing that concerns me though, and that is that the 6ft 1in, 23-year-old plays his international football for Mali. A slight concern when we’ll already be missing the likes of Cheik Tiote and Demba Ba for the African Cup of Nations later on in the year. Could we afford to lose three players? It could even be four should Shola Ameobi make an appearance for the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Frightening.

What do you make of it?

  1. Just posted this on the prior thread…

Just ran across this site, looking for info on this Maiga fellow, and thought folks might want a look. It has a “minutes per goal” stat, which I was writing about with somebody on here the other day.

    http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/modibo-maiga/leistungsdaten/spieler_46831.html

Interesting: compared with Shola, his minutes per goal is not as high.
    Of course, stats ain’t everything…

And that rate is not for just last season, I set the filter for his overall history compared to Shola’s overall history. Again, stats dont’ show everything, and his rate for last season was very good.

  2. It’s a worry but Mali might not even qualify for the Cup of Nations, if they lose their next game they don’t.

  6. Ice….maybe we can start a campaign that the toon fans bombard the Nigerian FA to pick Shola so than we can git rid of him like for 4 weeks…but after the makkems game..cos he always does the biz against the unwashed.. 😆

  7. I was more comfortable with the idea of a solid settled premier league player like Odemwingie or Rodalega…

  8. MM what a great idea mate,i want to be first to sign it,apart for a couple of players theres only 2 players i dis-like at sjp and hes both of them 😀 😀

  9. CC know what your saying about players from the PL and i agree, but odemwingie,he caught a few out last yr,but imo they will have him sussed now imo, plus hes 30 wont fit in for ashley 😉

  10. Havent heard of him never mind seen him play so cant really comment other than if he does sign I have every faith in the recuirtment team to have gotten it right

  11. Wonder if Benny is his agent? 😆
Next he’ll show up at St james’s in protest.
Not really the quick clever striker that we were hoping for but he is young and a £7 mil bid must mean that we rate him.

  12. Sunlounger…. nowt wrong with picking up a few French sprogs imo…if they come good then it’ll be a splendid piece of business… Previously this was the domain of Arsene Wenger, but if we have stolen a march then well done. I’d still like us to retain a certain British backbone to the team, but it’s gonna be tough the way we are going.

btw where is Kadar these days ?…the lad doesn’t seem to have a squad number…

  13. Think Graham Carr is a bit old for FM sunlounger, or am i been ageist? 🙂

Think he just watches alot of football sunlounger. He scouts them the good aul fashioned way 🙂

  14. ah right. good stuff. Lens have had a great youth set up recently bringing through some good players. One of their 19 year olds – raphael varane just signed for madrid for £9m or so. Taarabt was there before he came to england as was gael kakuta. All players with big potential. If we keep a close eye on their academy we could get some good players in

  15. this lad looks like trouble already…. was plucked from no-where and has had decent last season so now is ranting on slagging off his club loads like a complete tossa. great.. just what we want.
i would rather have a tried prem striker of british blood if possible esp at 7 million touch for this fella.

  16. Andy….aye, I think in years gone by there has been a certain bit of caffuffle with Arsenal approaching and buying players from the French youth academies, which peed the clubs off big time. Didn’t we also do summat similar with N’Zogbia I believe ?

I would LOVE our french model to work tbh. Would also love it if Lambarse moved on, Ashely recruited a football man, spent more of his wedge and started communicating better….Maybe one day ?

  18. Munich aslong as we do it properly we’ll be alright. Chelsea got into bother with lens over kakuta but i don’t think ashley would risk fines and punishments etc. It’d cost him money after all! Getting them in young gives them time to adapt to english style of play and life before they make the step up.

You sound like a complete ****** too but we can’t judge you if we don’t know you personally…

  20. Johno,

There was probably more options for 7 million when the window opened, now the options are more limited

  21. “Aly Cissokho anyway could join the Premier League before the end of the summer. L’equipe asserts this Monday that the leaders of Newcastle, obviously very active on the French market, Will make an offer to the OL to attempt to attach the services of the defender. With Well Arfa, Marveaux and Cabaye, the Magpies already have three-colored players, Cissokho can therefore contribute to Newcastle in the Premier League. For the moment, no price is evoked concerning this possible transfer.”

Bit of a rough translation, Anyway looks like the club are certainly digging for a left back, Tremendous signing if this comes off but i thought the pieters one was nearly there ??

  22. Yeah I would agree there was more options start of the window Moreno, we did have a few bids for players who moved to different clubs etc etc. Thought Long would of been a goos signing. But I do have faith whoever they bring in will improve us

  23. Anybody know when the FA review panel meet. Wondering if Song will be charged after his stamp

      (Quote)

  24. CC….Wasn’t there also rumours we’d go for Pieters whether jose stayed or not?, like I said the other day we need 2 left backs not one…also I think Pieters can also play cb which is a bonus. If we are after this lad from Mali then I also hope we’re after 2 strikers.

  25. Moreno…caffuffle…canny word eh ?… 😉 😉 pretty apt word for the toon I reckon… 😉

  26. I agree would add to the competition at left back and centre back, Cissokhos relationship with lyon has broken down and they want rid, So maybe we could try for a loan with a view to buy for him and use the cash for pieters in this window but i reckon there covering their arses and its one or the other (not that im complaining like far better than raylor/perch)

This maiga story doesnt sit right with me for the £10m odd they were bidding for gamero and gervinho (*****) they could surely get a quality proven finisher ??

  27. I’ve got a feeling that we are trying to wait for Tottenham to make their move for a striker.
They usually play 4-5-1 so there’s no way that they would keep Crouch, Defoe and Pav if they bring in someone new.
I can see us going in for one of them as a cut price option with prem experience.

  28. I think Solano’s got it right; there’s one of those ‘housing chain’ type of situation here, with everyone pushing as far forward on deals without committing, then someone blinks with an hour to go and it all goes through at the last moment.

Not good for the nerves! 😯

  29. When I found out about this dude even thou never heard of him was still happy. At least were trying to buy someone unlike what every one thought we won’t even bother trying get some one.
Even if he takes a huff about wanting to come to the toon, remember a certain Ben Arfa doing the same?
