Gabriel Obertan today has been the latest player to speak out about the clubs fans and about life on Tyneside.
Even though there were less than 47,000 fans at the Arsenal game they’ve still made a good impression on our new signings, with Yohan Cabaye also commenting on how good the fans were.
Over the summer we’ve been the laughing stock of the Southern media with every day seemingly bringing bad news for the club, and now the season has started hopefully we can put that behind us and start seeing some news which is actually good for the club.
What makes Newcastle attractive to players is the fans, and the atmosphere at St James’ Park, and players speaking out about it can do nothing but help persuade other players to join. This can only help the remaining players we want to sign from France, as our French contingent have being overawed by the brilliance of the Geordie faithful.
“I’m lucky that the fans like quick and tricky players, so I hope I’ll do well for them,” said Obertan in The Chronicle. “I’ll give my best on the pitch, and as long as the club gets results, I’ll be happy.”
Obertan seems to be quite a driven player who really wants to impress the fans. I’m sure he’s happy to be at a club who has fans who appreciate their players and actually give them a chance after spending a couple of seasons playing in front of the plastic Manchester United fans.
Gabriel Obertan went on to speak about Saturdays game.
“It was great, but we could have done better. They were down to 10 men. We’re still happy with one point. It’s important to grab something from the big teams, but a win would have been better.”
“I was relieved. Last season especially was a bit frustrating for me, and it just felt good to be on the pitch for 45 minutes, and to enjoy my football.”
Obertan wants to win every game which is important, and that’s the kind of player you need if you are going to be successful. Although he realised a draw was good he still wanted more, which is something I like about him, hopefully he’s not a bit to self-confident though.
Yohan Cabaye also spoke out after the game on Saturday, with more praise for the Newcastle fans.
“It was nearly 47,000? Wow. At Lille it was normally 15,000!”
“For me that was perfect. I love the English atmosphere, the English fans. Newcastle fans are brilliant”
Yohan Cabaye summed up why a lot of players leave France for England there in one sentence; yes he did have the chance to play Champions League football, but he would still be playing in front of a small crowd and players love to play in front of fans. I’m sure money does come into the equation but our fans and stadium is a massive pull for players.
Hopefully our fans are massive pull for our other target Erik Pieters and Modibo Maiga. Pieters will be playing in front of decent crowds for PSV but I’m not so sure that Maiga will be playing in front of 45-50 thousand fans for Sochuax in France.
We know we have the best fans around, but let’s keep that going and support the lads!
