Is Forster moving for the best?

Forster back to Celtic
Following confirmation that Fraser Forster is wasting a year of his career by sitting and watching Celtic play football and sometimes taking a couple of goal kicks in the Scottish Premier League, I’ve started to wonder whether this paves the way for a signing of a new goalkeeper? Or if it just frees up room in the 25 man squad?

Fraser Forster has moved to Celtic on a one year loan deal, and I’ll be very surprised if we saw him back on Tyneside in the future. Why? Well, we’ve got the emerging keeper of Tim Krul, who in my opinion is far better than Forster, that coupled with the fact that Forster doesn’t seem like he wants to sit on the bench it’s unlikely he’ll want to stay.

One thing that annoys me with this deal is the club that he’s going to, well not particularly the club, just the league in general. Is he really going to improve playing in a league with poor strikers and for a team who are not going to be tested very often? I feel it’s just a bit of a jolly for Fraser, going somewhere knowing he’ll have little to do and most importantly he’s unlikely to improve.

What made Alan Pardew decide that Forster was the one to leave? Without being too harsh on Forster he looked like he couldn’t catch a cold in the Leeds game and was possibly at fault for all three goals, and even if it wasn’t directly his fault he could certainly have done better. The defence also looked like they had no confidence in him, which was the most worrying thing.

I thought it was a real shame, because Forster had received some rave reviews from other Celtic fans and has looked like a good shot stopper in every game I’ve seen him, but if you cannot catch a cross you’re really going to struggle in the Premier League. All you have to do is look at the rough start De Gea has received behind a good defence at Man Utd as he’s struggling with the crosses in the Premier League.

Something which I find odd is Fraser Forster was the substitute goalkeeper for the game against Arsenal, why not Steven Harper if we knew Forster was going to be moving on?

This just made me think, with only two goalkeepers – if we don’t count reserve goalkeeper Ole Soderberg – are we going to be bringing in a goalkeeper to replace Fraser? I’m sure Pardew will probably want a new keeper in, but Ashley letting him do what he wants is another matter.

Who could we bring in though? Well, I’m not really sure I’d want a first team keeper, with Tim Krul improving with every game I feel he needs regular action to make him want to stay at the club. The Dutch international has started the season as number one and I expect him to stay there this season, barring a big signing or a catalogue of errors.

We’ve been linked with West Ham’s Robert Green in a few places, and I hope that’s the last we hear of that deal. Robert Green was directly at fault for 7 goals last season for West Ham according to Opta Stats and he’s only getting worse as a goalkeeper, let him stay at his level in the Championship.

We’ve not really been linked with any other keepers, so I cannot expand on future targets but I imagine if we were looking to buy a keeper it would be an unknown French player or a young Championship goalkeeper who can still improve, maybe somebody like Joe Lewis or Scott Loach.

So, there’s a few questions about this deal. Do you think Forster will return? Do you think we’ll replace him? If so, who’s replacing him?

  1. For all the ones coming of with the shit that he would be tested with us having to pick the ball out of our net because we would be conceeding so many ? Give your heed a good fuking shake he is our 3rd choice keeper so wouldn’t get a game to conceed owt but you’s are that good that he is going to be your No1 keeper.
Would that not tell you something about the difference in class ??
FFS wake up and smell the coffee bhoys 😆

  2. Another press conference where the journalists managed to get NOTHING out of the club or Pardew that we didn’t already know… Great job lads!

  3. I think it’s hard to say that a keeper isn’t going to be good enough at 23 because it is a unique position where experience is actually possibly just as important as talent, for once the ‘experience’ card isn’t over-rated. Some keepers arn’t at their prime until about the age of 30.

That said, I don’t think Forster is a EPL quality keeper and it would be right to sell him to one of his admirers both for him and the club. Didn’t Celtic offer £2m?

I don’t know whats going on with Harper, hopefully all will become clear in the fullness of time.

  4. @Big Dave

We don’t need to spend as much on a keeper because our outfield’s not complete pish!

With a goal difference of -1 last season you’d want to invest in a decent keeper.

  5. I’m pleased Krul is no.1 though and I hope he keeps lots of clean sheets, I definately wanted him to get more games this season and the odd mistake aside he looks a lot quicker and a better shotstopper to Forster and Harper. I wonder how much the pressure from his international selectors has influenced Pardews decison. They seem like a good bunch them lot, didn’t they also deselect De Jong after the Ben Arfa tackle. 😉

Absolute pearler, so what happened to the back up plan that was swinging into action?
Just because we find it easy to part with our better players, does he really think that other clubs are as daft?
If he does, he should go and have a word with the fairies at the bottom of my garden.

Why not? Havn’t Newcastle got about £40M and Ashley about £300M? sitting in the bank? 👿

  9. If you want to have a p!ssing contents between the two clubs stats. Take a look at our stats from 2009/2010 when we were in the championship because that’s the level of teams Celtic and Rangers come up against each season.
Celtic and Rangers are decent enough, probably mid table prem, but the rest are poor, very, very poor and would struggle in the Championship.
If Rangers and Celtic were to play in the EPL then their rep plus the EPL would allow them to make the big name signings, but that will never happen and has been proven year on year, when they step outside the EPL and into Europe they struggle.

You’re right they did. They’ve always been my second fav national side.

Robert- as we figured, clubs are bending us over on a fee because they know we’re desperate. I have no idea why they didn’t condition the sale enrique on obtaining a specific target. LPool did with the Torres/Carroll sales.

  11. Ashley wants nufc to ‘wipe its own nose’. Nufc sell Carroll and raise 35million, Sell Nolan and Enrique for a further 10million-ish. However nufc are not allowed to use these self generated funds to invest in the team.

    I’m confused. :/

      (Quote)

  12. Robert – More rubbish from Pardew. The Enqique deal has been hanging around for months. We would have known how much we would be getting for him, so why didn’t we look at our targets and put in bids off the back that Enrique would be leaving? We would pay for the player using existing club funds and then they would be replaced with the Enrique money. It’s not rocket science.
Another blinding move by my mate Derek.

  16. I have been reading a few NUFC blogs over the past year or so since Forster came to us and then Pardew started slagging us off. There has been some real ding dongs on here and other blogs over who won what, diddy leagues, 2 horse races, always fighting relegation etc etc….

    I conclude:
We (Celtic fans) have a great sense of humour because it is essential armoury in the environment which is Scotland. We are generally looked down upon but envied for our sheer devotion to our club.

The Geordies have a great sense of humour and like to wind up…well just about everybody. Perhaps because….. they are generally looked down upon in England but envied for their sheer devotion to their club.

In other words very similar indeed. Most Celtic fans I know have a soft spot for Newcastle when it comes to Derbies etc and maybe relations were better in the past.

Final word to NUFC. The vast majority of Celtic fans are completely embarrassed by the moronic political agenda that some carry with them to away matches. (tin hat on)

The same goes for the left back position. I knew Jose was signing for Liverpool back in January . Did the club not?
And we are still waiting with no real plan.

It’s embarrassing that we must be at the bottom of the list of summer targets who have all snubbed us.

We really are turning into an average club. I always maintained we are the equivalent of the Seymour and mckeag eras since Ashley took over.

Football in general has got more money in it,
but basing it on our standing within English football, Carroll was our Supermac and Pards our Gordon Lee 😕

  33. The Forster move is a bit of a sideshow really. The main event is still the exposure of the club’s transfer policy with the Pieters fiasco. It has finally completely exposed our unwillingness to pay a reasonable fee for a good player. I think Ashley has really tipped his hand here. He has realized he will never be welcome in Newcastle and has accelerated his plans to get out by selling off assets as quickly as possible. Looks to be another 2 years or so with several more player sales including Tiote and Colo. Hopefully he buys Tottenham after selling us since that is his real dream club. Let’s see how long it will take him to destroy them.

Yeah, Kayal is the kind of player that doesnt come along too often – to us anyway.. We’d like to keep him for a few years but it will be hard. One of the few genuine class players in Scotland right now. Watch out for Ki also.

It will be interesting to see how they eventually shape up for an EPL side. Maybe for the ‘toon who knows. Pardew probably thinks they’re gash. 🙂

  37. Why is there a previous article at the top of this blog which says tell Celtic to poke their 1.5 million? If Forster is so bad why were many Newcastle fans outraged by this bid? You would think they would be delighted to get a substandard player off their books for a fee.
Forster wants to play in front of bigger crowds than he would ever get the chance to at Newcastle; play in one of the greatest derby games in the world (come on Newcastle v Sunderland you have got to be kidding, does it even sell out?); play in Europe before he retires It is a no-brainer. Celtic every day of the week.
The EPL is vastly over-rated and you dummies lap up the crap from Shearer, Lineker et al that it is the greatest league in the world (remember they are handsomely paid to trot out this garbage). EPL teams have won the Champions league (the true measure of success) 3 times out of 20 goes and two of them were freak victories, Man Utd v Bayern and Liverpool v Milan while the other was the worst final in those 20 years. And this despite being the richest league in the world by a country mile. Truth is Celtic are evry bit as good as all but 6 teams in the EPL despite receiving 40 million less in revenue. But why should your Chairmen bother they are wealthy beyond dreams and it does not matter that you will win nothing for the next 50 years. It must be so depressing starting every campaign with the only goal being survival. Maybe this is the reason for the obsession with Celtic. .

@ Stein at#32, well that was a really sensible, balanced, reasoned argument you put across there. Well done, really made me question the points I put down. One thing I’m not is deluded. Newcastle are an average side in probably the most competitive league in the world. Doesn’t make us world beaters, but makes us a bloody good side. By the way it wasn’t a unprovoked dig at your [email protected] club, but in response to some muppet that decided to comment on another fans’ forum. Have a look on the Celtic forums for my comments… Oh you won’t find any because I’m not that sad and don’t care about any club north of the border. Your fans’ excuses about money are a joke. The reason there is no big TV money in Scotland is because the Scottish League is, has and always will be substandard bolox that hardly anybody wants to watch. Tssch. 😉

  40. I think we will begin making a net profit this season with player sales included and the huge reduction in wages and staff costs (staff were cut a huge amount in Championship season and haven’t been re-hired). The massive concentration on trialists indicates the plan is accelerating. All top wage earners will be out by the end of next season including Jonas and Colo. I believe only 2 more years of this nightmare will be required before Ashley puts the club on the market again, but this time as a profit making, highly efficient company with large numbers of young promising players. This is an entirely new business model for the Prem. The only other requirement is to avoid relegation. Arsenal offer something of a prototype for this model but we are taking it even further.

Anyhow won’t be posting on this thread again, waste of time. Go and post on your own club’s forums guys. Good luck for the coming season by the way. If I had to chose between Celtic and Rangers, it would be Celtic every time 😉

  42. Only an insane manager would try to continue to play with Raylor and Ferguson as left backs. Pardew is only doing it because he is being forced to by Ashley and Llambias. Pardew knows what a huge risk this is. The supposed renewed interest in Wayne Bridge is just another smokescreen. As if Bridge would agree to play for our level of wages and he is well past it anyway. Other supposed interest is also farcical. Sissokho will not come to us. He would be even more expensive and we already know now we will not pay. Ashley was relying on getting NTaylor for cheap and now has dug his heels in. He will not part with the Jose money, let alone some of the Carroll money.
