Following confirmation that Fraser Forster is wasting a year of his career by sitting and watching Celtic play football and sometimes taking a couple of goal kicks in the Scottish Premier League, I’ve started to wonder whether this paves the way for a signing of a new goalkeeper? Or if it just frees up room in the 25 man squad?
Fraser Forster has moved to Celtic on a one year loan deal, and I’ll be very surprised if we saw him back on Tyneside in the future. Why? Well, we’ve got the emerging keeper of Tim Krul, who in my opinion is far better than Forster, that coupled with the fact that Forster doesn’t seem like he wants to sit on the bench it’s unlikely he’ll want to stay.
One thing that annoys me with this deal is the club that he’s going to, well not particularly the club, just the league in general. Is he really going to improve playing in a league with poor strikers and for a team who are not going to be tested very often? I feel it’s just a bit of a jolly for Fraser, going somewhere knowing he’ll have little to do and most importantly he’s unlikely to improve.
What made Alan Pardew decide that Forster was the one to leave? Without being too harsh on Forster he looked like he couldn’t catch a cold in the Leeds game and was possibly at fault for all three goals, and even if it wasn’t directly his fault he could certainly have done better. The defence also looked like they had no confidence in him, which was the most worrying thing.
I thought it was a real shame, because Forster had received some rave reviews from other Celtic fans and has looked like a good shot stopper in every game I’ve seen him, but if you cannot catch a cross you’re really going to struggle in the Premier League. All you have to do is look at the rough start De Gea has received behind a good defence at Man Utd as he’s struggling with the crosses in the Premier League.
Something which I find odd is Fraser Forster was the substitute goalkeeper for the game against Arsenal, why not Steven Harper if we knew Forster was going to be moving on?
This just made me think, with only two goalkeepers – if we don’t count reserve goalkeeper Ole Soderberg – are we going to be bringing in a goalkeeper to replace Fraser? I’m sure Pardew will probably want a new keeper in, but Ashley letting him do what he wants is another matter.
Who could we bring in though? Well, I’m not really sure I’d want a first team keeper, with Tim Krul improving with every game I feel he needs regular action to make him want to stay at the club. The Dutch international has started the season as number one and I expect him to stay there this season, barring a big signing or a catalogue of errors.
We’ve been linked with West Ham’s Robert Green in a few places, and I hope that’s the last we hear of that deal. Robert Green was directly at fault for 7 goals last season for West Ham according to Opta Stats and he’s only getting worse as a goalkeeper, let him stay at his level in the Championship.
We’ve not really been linked with any other keepers, so I cannot expand on future targets but I imagine if we were looking to buy a keeper it would be an unknown French player or a young Championship goalkeeper who can still improve, maybe somebody like Joe Lewis or Scott Loach.
So, there’s a few questions about this deal. Do you think Forster will return? Do you think we’ll replace him? If so, who’s replacing him?
