This time last year was, quite simply, one of the greatest weekends of my life.
After an opening day defeat at Old Trafford against the eventual champions Manchester United we went into a match against Aston Villa – a club which previously most of us didn’t really have an opinion on.
However that was changed when their supporters pranced around revelling in our relegation. The supporters who meant nothing to us unleashed banners revelling in our demise, and we wanted the smug knobheads to pay. And pay they did when we wiped the floor with them in a 6-0 thrashing. Being a Newcastle supporter outside of the city can be frustrating (and costly) but living in Birmingham was a good thing that day!
This weekend feels even better, we may have only won 1-0 but against the Mackems it means so much more.
Something that was to grab my attention before kick-off was our bench. Steve Harper, Mike Williamson, Peter Lovenkrands, Demba Ba, Dan Gosling, Sylvain Marveaux and Leon Best. This would suggest a bit of strength in depth and we still have Danny Guthrie, Shane Ferguson and Hatem Ben Arfa to return.
If this is compared to our substitutes against Aston Villa this time last year which consisted of Tim Krul, James Tavernier, Peter Lovenkrands, Ryan Taylor, Shola Ameobi, Xisco and Haris Vuckic, which would you say is stronger?
Of course we still need to invest in a left back and we are also in the hunt for a new forward which will boost our options but on the whole I think we are slowly building a decent squad capable of a possible top half finish.
But so much of this depends on what the club does in the next week or so. Two new signings along with keeping what we have and I’m a happy man. A quality left-back and a forward with plenty of pace would be just the ticket in my opinion.
How do you think we look at the moment?
