Strength in depth?

No banners this time around!

No banners this time around!
This time last year was, quite simply, one of the greatest weekends of my life.

After an opening day defeat at Old Trafford against the eventual champions Manchester United we went into a match against Aston Villa – a club which previously most of us didn’t really have an opinion on.

However that was changed when their supporters pranced around revelling in our relegation. The supporters who meant nothing to us unleashed banners revelling in our demise, and we wanted the smug knobheads to pay. And pay they did when we wiped the floor with them in a 6-0 thrashing. Being a Newcastle supporter outside of the city can be frustrating (and costly) but living in Birmingham was a good thing that day!

This weekend feels even better, we may have only won 1-0 but against the Mackems it means so much more.

Something that was to grab my attention before kick-off was our bench. Steve Harper, Mike Williamson, Peter Lovenkrands, Demba Ba, Dan Gosling, Sylvain Marveaux and Leon Best. This would suggest a bit of strength in depth and we still have Danny Guthrie, Shane Ferguson and Hatem Ben Arfa to return.

If this is compared to our substitutes against Aston Villa this time last year which consisted of Tim Krul, James Tavernier, Peter Lovenkrands, Ryan Taylor, Shola Ameobi, Xisco and Haris Vuckic, which would you say is stronger?

Of course we still need to invest in a left back and we are also in the hunt for a new forward which will boost our options but on the whole I think we are slowly building a decent squad capable of a possible top half finish.

But so much of this depends on what the club does in the next week or so. Two new signings along with keeping what we have and I’m a happy man. A quality left-back and a forward with plenty of pace would be just the ticket in my opinion.

How do you think we look at the moment?

  1. I know it’s unlikely but if we got Pieters and Bendtner/Rodellega/Maiga and nobody left i’d be chuffed with our signings and i’d be confident on a good year

  2. It was great to see us win. A real team effort. I would tend to agree with others who say we have very little depth in defense and our forward depth consists mostly of players who are out of their depth. Get another striker in, move Peter on, give Best a chance against Scunthorpe. Bring in a left back, get rid of Perch and bring in a decent utility player and then we have a chance to finish top eight. It really wouldn’t cost all that much and the owner would still have made a large profit this year. What’s not to like about that for any of us?

  3. JOBEY07 .. agree with you .. gut feeling we maybe get 1 out of the 2 – hopefully Pieters and then it is up to Best to get involved and score some goals ..

  4. @Jobey

Bendtner all day for me. I think Arsen said he might stay at Arsenal tho.

I’d be well chuffed also, can’t believe we all acted like spoilt little shits πŸ˜€

    but.. fingers crossed..

  5. Toivonen more of an attacking midfielder, Mertens is the one we want but no chance cos he`l be more than were prepared to spend, and hes there best striker (IMHO)
Great result yesterday and I reckon we will get Pieters in this week (probably Friday though after they qualify for Europa league group)

  6. We’ve got some fantastic kids coming through.
Is it so terrible to give them a chance ?
Haris Vukic looked the best of our players in the pre-season. Theres a kid just starting out, JJ -something – got a hat trick on his debut for the under-18s. One to watch. Gosling looks great. Needs a run.
    Its shaping up, just slowly.

  7. GeordieTwo – Im in the pub and have not moderated anything πŸ˜•

Ive had a look though and it was automatically moderated because of the word “scunthorpe”. On its own not bad, but look at the second, third, fourth and fifth letters of it and you’ll see why. Its not you, it happens to everyone

I await an apology for you jumping to conclusions….

  8. Phil K @ 81 it was Jonathan JJ Hooper who got the hat trick against Chelsea. Very promising striker apparently (only 17) that we have just signed. Maybe let’s keep him away from Ranger and his mates and give him someone older to get advice from. A mentor at the club would be a great thing.

  9. Ok toonsy, not that I know anything about how moderating works but you have my sincere apology. Enjoy your time at the pub. It’s interesting that having an improper word embedded in another word is automatically detected. Maybe they should consider changing their name. πŸ˜†

  10. ” , the most loud anti Ashley bloke on this blog would say that i think that AP is going to get his man..”

    I hope we do.
The problem isn’t whether AP shows willing, I doubt Pardew could do more. It’s whether Ashley will spend the cash, of that, no one can be certain.

  11. ” I know it’s unlikely but if we got Pieters and Bendtner/Rodellega/Maiga and nobody left i’d be chuffed with our signings and i’d be confident on a good year”

Jobey I think that’s probably fair. I would add though, that in my view the new defender and new striker are necessities. I would be very displeased if we weren’t to get them.
Also my level of ‘chuffedness’ would be dependant on us not selling any more key players before the window closes.

So, no key players leave and two quality players in = reasonably happy.

Know the question has been answered, but just you saying it brought back great memories. I remember heading down to the Milan metro system making my way to the San Siro, can’t remember its real name, thats just the area where it is. Must have been about 100 or so Geordies in their black & white tops singing ‘Have you ever seen a mackam in Milan’ the local girls looked so worried to strat with, then their husbands/boyfriends must have explained to them what was going on and they started to look a bit more relaxed. Was an amazing experience and such a great day, love to do it again sometime in the future

  13. Think the team is on the verge of gelling nicely. Been increasingly impressed with Cabaye and once his understanding with Tiote improves, we could have a pretty powerful CM pairing. Couple that with jonas/marveaux wide left, HBA as AMC and Obertan or Barton on the right, looks quite exciting. Just need to give the lads a bit of time and understanding. May be a hopeless optimist, but when I look at the young lads coming through, I feel quite positive about the future of the club IF we hang onto them. Would love to see Santon at the club in place of Simmo as well

  14. If maiga is a no-go, I think pappas cisse from freiberg would be a great shout. Scores plenty as a lone striker from the same formation we use!

  15. Hope to see kaz stick it to the mackems this week in the cup for Brighton.

Really want to see vuckic, Abeid, and gosling get starts against scunny as they all had a great preseason

  16. Our midfield options is very strong, with exciting possibilities. I even think our strikers choice isn’t too bad. The defense is where we most need to strengthen and protect.

We should no sooner sell, say,. Colo than Chelsea would sell Terry – and Colo is worth as much too.

  17. @Andrew T

Papiss Cisse’s scoring record is outrageous – 32 in 51 for Freiburg, including 4 in 3 this season and a double just this weekend. Gotta say tho -i’ve never seen him play….. youtube time, haha!

It seems his valuation is around 13m – too expensive for us, perhaps?

Also, he’s Senegalese (he’s got 7 in 9 for them) – so that would be another guy we’d lose to the African Nations Cup in Jan.

I haven’t seen us linked with him even once mind…. and just this weekend he was mentioned in connection with the mackems and Blackburn

    here’s a few youtube vids –
