Brest striker Nolan Roux offered to Newcastle.

Nolan Roux offerd to Newcastle
According to L’Equipe Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign to sign Stade Brest striker Nolan Roux with a the French club requesting a fee of around €8 million for the 23-year-old.

My first reaction was one of amazement as I wondered just who the hell he is?

This of course prompted me to take a bit of a look at the player and see what he is all about. When your only brush with a player has been on the computer game ‘Football Manager’ a good few years ago then I guess you’d need to take a look at what he has achieved in real life, hence why I’m here writing this. Just as a sidenote his transfer into my virtual team never really worked out as I recall which means that I dislike him right from the get-go. It may be petty but those that play Football Manager will understand.

Anyway, back to the real world. Nolan Roux may have a name that sounds similar to what a strip club run by a former captain of ours may have, but that is where the similarities with Kevin Nolan end. I just found it amusing so I put it in there. Sorry.

Looking at his goals record I’d have to say there isn’t a lot there to fill me with optimism. On the surface of it 23 goals in 64 appearances for club and country doesn’t seem too bad, but when you consider that 15 of those goals came whilst he was playing in the French second division you can perhaps see why I’m so concerned. If the Premier league is a step up from Ligue 1, then how many steps up is it from Ligue 2?

Whilst I’m an about the Premier League, does it not wind you up when English people call it the ‘BPL’? To my mind it’s never been a British Premier League. Also the Premiership was disbanded years ago. Keep up people. I’m glad I’ve got that off my chest.

Chest rhymes with Brest which takes me back to the player in question. Apparently we’ve not made an enquiry for the player and instead his current employers have offered him out to us. Presumably they know that we are searching for a striker and have been camped in France since God knows when.

I mean just look at what’s happened to Graham Carr (pictured right) as a result!

Whether or not Newcastle are intending to take a serious look at the player is unknown. Roux was strongly linked with Liverpool not so long back so they must have taken a look at him and rated him enough to register an interest.

On the other side of that though they mustn’t have rated him enough to firm up any interest. Does that mean that he wouldn’t be good enough for us aswell? To be honest I think that is opening up a whole different can of worms but if you wish to do so then I’ve left the tin opener on the side.

I guess it’s time for the obligatory YouTube compilation video now, so here it is.

So will it happen? Pass. Do I want it to happen? Pass. Are Newcastle even interested? Pass. Or is it Brest just wanting a few bucks? Who knows. I don’t.

What I will say is that whilst his goal record is perhaps not the best, he has time on his side and can improve. He seems to fit the criteria that we are looking for and to be fair I’m getting to the point where any striker will do now. Well, not literally but you get my point hopefully.

What do you make of him? Would you have him at Newcastle? Or would you say Brest is best for Nolan Roux?

  2. i reckon Barton isnt going anywhere. I think he’ll stay here…hopefully.

this might scupper other deals tho. The other deals seem to be hinged on others going?

  9. Toonsy, must admit I sometimes refer to it as the EPL, but only cos it’s quicker to type than ‘the premier league’. It did do my head in though when Cocacola, Barclaycard and the like decided to plant their names in it. What it’s all about these days though – brand sponsorship = big coin.

  10. Mark, I hope he does too, but I doubt it.

All Hail Joey Barton, for he is our Lord!!!

  11. Always been a fan of Brest in France. They don’t get a lot of support so they are a bit more acessible to the average fan. 😉

  12. Doesn’t the 8m euros exclude us from this deal?

It’s OK. Euros aren’t real money anyway 😉

Its like we’re al buddies on first name terms.

    hope it has an effect..

  15. Let’s hope we don’t Roux missing this one. Sorry couldn’t resist it.
On a more serious note – shame Erdinc has gone. He seemed a good choice and at a decent price.
Would still prefer Bendtner AND maybe Macheda on loan as I still think we need two strikers. Maybe we could offload Best or Lovenkrands?

  18. So we offered 7mill for Erdinc and he was desperate to stay. he ‘s gone for 8mill to rennes. Less haggling me thinks and pay what is worth.

Can’t say I’m too bothered tho we didnt get him

Away tickets are now only being sold to season-ticket holders and club members in the wake of the pitch invasion at Darlington last month.”

.org had a good write up about this, this week.

£25 to join membership. Season ticket holders need to read the small print..

I noticed the club membership thing on the official site. Least all the money goes into the academy, according to the club.

  28. When I worked in the military side of a weather company, the best story I heard about one of the forecasters at an RAF station involved a cute female forecaster who enjoyed standing up in front of a load of uniformed airmen each morning and telling them what the weather was going to be like for their missions.

She was a bit of a tease, knowing that their boss was a bit slow on the uptake of double-entendres but the rest of them weren’t and had trouble keeping their composure while the boss remained straight-faced.

    Her best line:

“There will be a warm, moist mass coming over Brest this evening”

    Priceless.

  29. Just read the article, Paul Heyward on the departure of Joey Barton (Guardian). The first 3 quarters of the article makes sense, the last quarter was brainless b&%$$##*x of the highest order. Honestly, some of the press are dying for us to fall apart and are no doubt disappointed we got a result against Sunderland.

The Fulham match could be tough too, so we need to fight in every game.

I think we’re going about things the right way, though in some cases should maybe be a fraction less tight with the purse strings, ’tis all. But from a football side we needn’t miss Barton as much as some think.

  30. Here is a summary of Nolan Roux from French Football Weekly:

On Tuesday afternoon various media sources picked up the story that Brest striker Nolan Roux was a target for English side Liverpool. Some sources even going as far to say a fee and contract terms had been agreed and the 23 yr old would be on his way to Anfield on Friday or Saturday to have a medical before completing the deal.

The young striker has rose to prominence very quckly in 2009/10 he scored 15 goals as he was a huge part of Brest’s promotion to Ligue 1. However his first season in the top flight was hampered a little by injury, he scored 6 goals and was mostly impressive.

To give you an idea of what the player is like here are some tweets from the top Ligue 1 reporters airing their thoughts on Roux:
Matt Spiro – Writer and broadcaster for Ligue1.com

Nolan Roux is 23, great potential. Scored 15 goals to get Brest up, only 6 in debut top flight year but had injury. I’d guess €6-8m.
I had pleasure of commentating on Roux’s goal in the Brittany derby vs Rennes. Pure class.

James Eastham – French football scout and betting expert

If they can get him for £7-8m it would be a bargain. Outstanding prospect.
He has a fantastic attitude, great movement, workrate and much, much more than a goalscorer. A potential French international.
He’s right-footed but decent on both sides, I can see him playing wide as well as through the middle.

Jonathan Johnson – Writer for Sky Sports and French Football Weekly

Hot prospect. 23 yr old striker, 6 goals, 3 assists in 28 games. A former Lens youth player. Possesses great speed and positioning.
Superb performance for U-21′s in his only match for them v Croatia.
Son of Bruno Roux, 15 goals/5 assists in Ligue 2,strong player will adapt to Premier League, unfinished article, versatile-striker or winger

It’s clear to see that Nolan Roux is very highly rated, fans too often only look at a strikers goal ratio and determine if he is worthy or not. There is much more to being a top striker than putting the ball in the back of the net and Roux has the ability to be one of the leading strikers in Europe.

      (Quote)

  31. True…but a top striker also has to be able to put the ball in the net first and foremost, also we need a striker who will do that now, not 2 years or so down the line 😉 …….and if he was injured why was he playing?
