A case for Ryan at right-back

Raylor for right-back?
With Ryan Taylor playing particularly well at left-back over the course of our last four games it raises the question of whether he could be the man to play at right-back instead of Danny Simpson?

Whilst watching the Scunthorpe game live on Sky Sports I realised that Danny Simpson’s performances have not been very good.

I would say I first noticed this towards the end of the season when it came to my attention that he backed away from attackers when they were advancing down the left flank. This was again evident in the game at Glanford Park and I noticed several times that he backed away from the defenders and allowed them to get a cross in when he could have easily dealt with the situation. This hasn’t been the only time I’ve noticed this and since the season has started it seems to me that Simmo has continued on in this form.

I know that the lad needs to develop but if he doesn’t know the basics then someone should tell him or show him how to do it. If he learnt the aspects of playing at right-back then maybe his positional sense may be a lot better. I also noticed during that game at Scunthorpe once he had been in an attack it took a long time for him to get back to his actual position. Once you’ve attacked you should be making your way back to your position as quick as you can so you can stop the opposition from getting through on goal. Basics.

The way Ryan Taylor has been playing at left-back has shown that he is capable of putting in a very decent shift in a black and white shirt. Furthermore his freekicks in the last two games have give im an extra string to his bow. What I’m getting at is that I feel Ryan Taylor is someone who could take over the right-back role.

Simpson’s performances have not been up to standard and the only way to rectify that may be to slot Raylor into that role for a couple of games. I certainly feel that the Liverpudlian is able to play in this role effectively and that would allow him to play in his natural position. It’s only a suggestion but it may be a better solution than having Danny Simpson play poorly in that position.

The other solution to this particular position could be the potential transfer of Davide Santon. He too is able to play at RB and has done on several occasions for Inter Milan. With the form that Ryan Taylor is in at left-back would it disrupt the links that he has made with the players around him. It could make sense to keep Raylor on the left flank until he has a dip in form and place Santon on the right and then potentially switching him over to the left when perhaps that form dips.

Of course this may only happen if the club stump up some money in order to buy a left-back. If we do gain a left-back in the remaining days of the transfer window it would make sense to me for Alan Pardew to give Ryan Taylor a chance at right-back considering that he has performed consistently in an unfamiliar position during these last four games.

I personally would like him to be given a chance, if the opportunity arises, to play there as he has shown that he can play in defence. It would also be a way of keeping a very good freekick taker in the side.

What do you think? Could Ryan Taylor be an option at right-back?

  1. As underwhelmed as I am with Macheda, I would be more underwhelmed if we had spent actual coin on Cissokho. Rubbish player.

  2. Every Man Utd player got a run out in pre season except Obertan and Macheda it seemed, maybe Man Utd wanted to see how Welbeck did before letting Macheda go?

Seems too random not to be planned really.

  3. I also don’t like the idea of Newcastle JUST loaning players. Ben Arfa worked out because we had the option to buy. I despise the idea of us being like the mackems in any way.

  4. bring in Macheda as a pal/interpreter for young Santon…. but buy another CF to actually play in the team. Not going to get in ahead of Best and a post-ramadan Ba…. not to mention the Ameobi brothers

If he comes, i reck Macheda will get about as many chances as Rossi did. If Man U are sensible, they’ll send him to the mackems

  5. I’m wondering if there is a striker that we haven’t been linked with..From Drogba to Hoilett to Crouch, fuk the media has certainly taken the shot gun approach when it comes to hitting our actual striking targets.. Not sure about Macheda at all… I would be surprised if we were interested…

  6. Isn’t Macheda just another re hashed story from the press? …hope so, he is no better than what we have and probably even worse from a goals point of view. 🙄

  7. morning rich ,is there any spanish forwards near by that you can kidnap and ship across because it dusent look like any 1 is coming in 😉
