The final two days have brought some movement in the transfer window with Inter Milan’s Davide Santon and Charlton’s Rob Elliot being hopefully the first of many through the door in the final two days of the transfer window.
These deals seem increasingly likely as both players are on Tyneside today completing their respective medicals and crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s to their contracts I imagine. I imagine you know quite a bit about these already with the amount of speculation flying around lately.
The Elliot deal puzzles me really, but it’s no harm having an extra player in the squad. Elliot will probably just play deputy to Tim Krul, or may even be behind Harper, but Harper’s missed the last few games with injuries, and in my opinion he is on his last legs.
Santon is the more important signing of the two, the versatile Italian international full back will be a big improvement on Ryan Taylor at left back and Danny Simpson at right back, it’s a real shame he can’t be in two places at once. But finally it looks like we’ve completed a deal for a left back, something which has been a whole in our team all season.
I imagine that Elliot is going to cost the club around 250 – 500k so you cash counters can add that little bit on, and Davide Santon is going to cost the club £5 million plus bonuses, something which I really believe is a coup for the club.
With around a day and a half left to go in this transfer window we’re still chasing a striker. Modibo Maiga is the main target, and we’ve put in another bid for him which Sochaux are considering. In France reports are that we’ve agreed a deal for him at around £7 million but Sochaux will not let him go before they find a replacement, Sochaux are currently locked in talks with Leeds over Max Gradel, who could be seen as a replacement.
There are a few more players we have been rumoured with showing an interest in over the last day or so. These players being Federico Macheda and Sulley Muntari on loan, to be honest, I’d take either of these to add depth to our squad, Muntari would be a good bench option and Macheda wouldn’t be a bad player to bring on either. My gripe would be if we just signed Macheda on loan, and didn’t pay a fee for a forward, that would be disappointing.
Petr Bolek is someone else who we’ve been looking at on loan, but I imagine he will not be signed if we complete a deal for Elliot. That’s a shame, because I think we’ve dropped a Bolek if we don’t sign him…. 😉
Also the people claim we’re interested in signing Yossi Benayoun, but Arsenal and Liverpool are also credited with interest. Benayoun was Pardew’s signing at West Ham so I imagine he’d love to have him at Newcastle it’s just whether the price and wages are right, as Benayoun is getting on a bit. I’d still have him though, excellent player to watch.
This article is a bit mumbo jumbo and everything just chucked in together, but seen as the deadline is tomorrow I thought I’d just chuck this together to give an insight on the possible incoming players, fingers crossed for a busy few days, not outgoing though. We did that in January and I don’t fancy it this year.
Let’s have some predictions on who we’re going to bring in then? I’ll say Santon, Elliot and Maiga. Hopefully Macheda too, but I’m not greedy!
