Finally some movement!

What a coup this player will be!
The final two days have brought some movement in the transfer window with Inter Milan’s Davide Santon and Charlton’s Rob Elliot being hopefully the first of many through the door in the final two days of the transfer window.

These deals seem increasingly likely as both players are on Tyneside today completing their respective medicals and crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s to their contracts I imagine. I imagine you know quite a bit about these already with the amount of speculation flying around lately.

The Elliot deal puzzles me really, but it’s no harm having an extra player in the squad. Elliot will probably just play deputy to Tim Krul, or may even be behind Harper, but Harper’s missed the last few games with injuries, and in my opinion he is on his last legs.

Santon is the more important signing of the two, the versatile Italian international full back will be a big improvement on Ryan Taylor at left back and Danny Simpson at right back, it’s a real shame he can’t be in two places at once. But finally it looks like we’ve completed a deal for a left back, something which has been a whole in our team all season.

I imagine that Elliot is going to cost the club around 250 – 500k so you cash counters can add that little bit on, and Davide Santon is going to cost the club £5 million plus bonuses, something which I really believe is a coup for the club.

With around a day and a half left to go in this transfer window we’re still chasing a striker. Modibo Maiga is the main target, and we’ve put in another bid for him which Sochaux are considering. In France reports are that we’ve agreed a deal for him at around £7 million but Sochaux will not let him go before they find a replacement, Sochaux are currently locked in talks with Leeds over Max Gradel, who could be seen as a replacement.

There are a few more players we have been rumoured with showing an interest in over the last day or so. These players being Federico Macheda and Sulley Muntari on loan, to be honest, I’d take either of these to add depth to our squad, Muntari would be a good bench option and Macheda wouldn’t be a bad player to bring on either. My gripe would be if we just signed Macheda on loan, and didn’t pay a fee for a forward, that would be disappointing.

Petr Bolek is someone else who we’ve been looking at on loan, but I imagine he will not be signed if we complete a deal for Elliot. That’s a shame, because I think we’ve dropped a Bolek if we don’t sign him…. 😉

Also the people claim we’re interested in signing Yossi Benayoun, but Arsenal and Liverpool are also credited with interest. Benayoun was Pardew’s signing at West Ham so I imagine he’d love to have him at Newcastle it’s just whether the price and wages are right, as Benayoun is getting on a bit. I’d still have him though, excellent player to watch.

This article is a bit mumbo jumbo and everything just chucked in together, but seen as the deadline is tomorrow I thought I’d just chuck this together to give an insight on the possible incoming players, fingers crossed for a busy few days, not outgoing though. We did that in January and I don’t fancy it this year.

Let’s have some predictions on who we’re going to bring in then? I’ll say Santon, Elliot and Maiga. Hopefully Macheda too, but I’m not greedy!

The way you’re going about your commenting has him turning in his grave, utter disgrace the way you’re conducting yourself on here.

    DoItForJoeFKinnear would be more apt.

Smokin’ Joe FK: Which one is Simon Bird?

    SB: Me

    JFK: You’re a ****

    SB: Thank you.

    Classic.

  5. @craig – sure you’ll be gutted if we actually sign him
He’s young, he’s cheap, he’s potentially the best left back in europe along with wages less than enriques and huge sell on potential – it’s actually a perfect Ashley buy

  6. ok well lets hope he is our new number 3 then.. cos if he aint we are out of ideas and time .

  7. Regarding the “would he fly across Europe to do a medical without a deal being agreed for personal terms” earlier.

Isn’t that what Marveaux did when he flew in to Liverpool…?

  9. StevieP… potentially the best lB in europe????? hey i hope he works out great and there is hope but the best LB he is not. sorry en all that like. He was shining alot brighter several years ago when he burst onto the scene but in last 18 months has not done well for whatever reason with injury being a factor for sure. His italy caps.. although he has a fair few for young lad he has only been selected 2 times in last 2 years i think and has been overlooked. he was farmed out last season as not needed at inter. All that said, i do think the lad looks great and i hope that he does fulfil his huge potential…at 20 years old what he needs is stability and and a manager that will help him along… nufc and stability…. hummmm, i hope we start getting some thats for sure.

  12. @thad – Marveaux actually passed the medical at lfc but medics wouldn’t sign off without 2nd medical, personal terms had been agreed – toon then swooped in

      (Quote)

  13. @craig – I did say potentially 🙂

Stability and the toon – never happen mate, always a rollercoaster no matter who owns or manages us

  14. steveP.. not according to marvaux himself, he said it was not a medical related issue.

Anyway, this from Macheda agent just now……..

“Macheda doesn’t return to Italy, Manchester United will send him on loan in the Premier League,” Macheda’s agent Giovanni Bia told calciomercato.com.

“At this time, Newcastle has the edge over Queens Park Rangers.”

Sochaux continuing to dig their heels in over Maiga. Their conversations with #NUFC must be like two brick walls colliding….

  18. asim.. everyone wants GOOD players… its just that we have been here many times in the windows under ashley and i just cant belive anytihng they say or do anymore. they have no credibility at all with me. if we get some decent players i will be thrilled… but if we do i wonder who will be going out……

  19. Why are we bringing in 2 goaltenders to look at? Is Harper on his way out or are we selling Krul? I guess this means Pardew doesn’t rate Soderberg at all. Very strange. Haven’t heard a word out of Harper and why hasn’t Pardew commented? No deal for either Pieters or Cissokho because they are both too expensive. Haven’t we known that for quite some time now?

      (Quote)

  20. asim if you really believe that fans dont want the club to buy players, you are deluded.
Saying the club wont buy players doesn’t mean they dont want players, so grow up a bit and stop getting on like a little boy
Oh and by the way taylor and simpson arn’t the only players you slag off, so try getting behind them instead of whinging about them every game.

  21. @craig – agree about harps, seems pardew and co are getting rid of the ‘players union’ so he can impose his own or ashleys views

  22. every person slags of their players..if he has been crap or not worth the shirt..thats why we are on here..but i never had a go at u did i..untill u said something about me…so lets put a line under it..

  23. What do people think of Macheda? Did poorly on loan last season apparently, 1 goal in 14 games. Do we really want another young player? Don’t think so. Maybe the Maiga deal will come through although Sochaux want someone in before they sell. Is this another case of leaving it too late? Lots of action to come apparently.

  24. Harrogate @57, I would love to see Dann or another solid CB come in. We are desperately thin in that area and for the life of me cant understand why LB is more of a priority with Raylor doing such a great job. When Coloccini got tackled at smack my heart skipped a beat. Imagine Perch being in the centre of defense this season.

I have concerns about Santon. i looked at some videos of him in individual games and i wasn’t so impressed. He moves the ball up the flank well but is not as assured in defense. I could easily see Jonas providing what Santon will from fullback. I hope the lad does well tho.
