Colo: “I’m very happy here, so we’ll see what happens”

Colo keen to stay
Newcastle Captain Fabricio Coloccini has hinted that a new contract could be on the horizon as he looks to secure his long term professional future.

Speaking to the local press, the 29-year-old has reiterated that he is very happy at Newcastle and is open to following the lead of Jonas Gutierrez who penned a new deal last week.

The one major stumbling block with Colo is going to be his wage. It’s reported that he is the highest paid player at the club so it will be interesting to see just what happens. If he signs we know there has been compromise and that the club can offer wages high enough to keep top players interested. If he doesn’t then it’s a sign of the “finance first” attitude that can become detrimental to the playing side of things.

However it should also be mentioned that other clubs would struggle to match the reported £80,000-a-week wages that he is on which may well work in our favour. Something else that may work in our favour is that apparent happiness of the player.

“I’m very happy here, so we’ll see what happens,” said Colo when asked by the local press about a hint of a new contract.

As Captain he is arguably one of the most important players at the club. To me he is the first name on the teamsheet, even if he wasn’t Captain, and it would cost an awful lot of money to replace him. I just hope that the club look at it that way.

Colo is a success story although it hasn’t all been sweetness and light for the Argie. He struggled to settle on Tyneside which showed on the pitch as Colo looked set to join a long line of expensive flops. However, and this should serve as a warning to people who write players off/build them up early in their time at the club, he turned it around and is now starting to share his experience with the other new signings at the club.

Coloccini said: “It’s not just been my job as captain to make sure the new players have settled in, it’s been something everyone’s had to do. When a new player comes we have to make them feel comfortable in Newcastle. I know how difficult it was for me when I came here.”

“The team spirit is different to last season. When you start well everything is good, everyone is happy. It’s different. We’ll find out more when we have some bad times. But now the spirit is fantastic. We have some good people in the changing room and I think that’s the key for us to keep winning and playing well.”

So Colo does indeed seem happy with life at Newcastle, and with his teammates. He’s been calling on his bad experience when he first signed for us and is using it to help the club now. I personally can’t fault the lad and hope that he and the club manage to agree terms on a new deal.

Sign him up!

I agree with every bit of that. He would cost an absolute bomb to replace ona like for like basis as he offers so much. Stability in defence is something this club has struggled with for longerthan I care to remember. Even if he is on £80k a week and he wont budge on it in the negotiations, we should be doing all we can to keep him – including matching his current wage packet if needs be. Good read 💡

  2. Lets get him signed up now. Maybe, just maybe the board/owner has seen the light with getting Jonas in. Colo is a leader, lets keep him here long term.

Anybody checked, have we made a profit? If we have, keep him on the same wages, he’s bound to sign

  3. Also he was the first ‘real’ signing from whne Ashley took over, if he does rate him and backed the original ‘big money’ paid for him, hopefully he’ll offer him a new deal

  4. Sign him up! another legend…. i cant actually believe the only negative right now is that we still have alan smith on our books! 😆

  5. Only for the remainder of this season Liam,
and then its only a negative if he plays.
Hopefully he never even gets on the bench again.
He has had many chances and proved he is feckin useless now.
A rudolph cast off for a very good reason.
    😈

  6. tbh its understandable that ashley doesn’t want to fall into that trap again, which makes me worry about Colo’s new contract talks.
Please please Mr ashley do the right thing this time. 2 yrs on same money, 3 yrs on lower wage. Sounds fare to me. 😎

  7. I would be worried, but I do think that fact that Jonas has signed will play a big part in things.

Like I said with Jonas though, even if the contract is a more incentivised one I’d back the pair of them to earn their money unlike a Nolan or Barton. The pair are stupidly fit and hardly miss a game.

  8. This really is a benchmark for me. They’ll know how important he is to the team from his performances over the last two seasons, always been a model pro and now he’s the captain that’s led us to this great start (which lazyarse appears to recognise from reading the article about the paintball/dinner and him making a little speech and paying).
It’s a test of whether they recognise exceptional circumstances for exceptional contributions. I worry that he’s both a high earner and past their desired age, if it was one or the other i don’t think they’d have a problem but being both has me slightly concerned. The best he can do is keep this start going until negotiations are done and everyones still on cloud 9

  9. aye, agreed. I mentioned the other week that other teams would struggle to match his wages especially at 29.

Its a win-win for me. The only thing that could go wrong is we dont offer him a contract at all. Keep him on similar wages with a decent bonus.

“There Toonsy – thats better lad!”

Really? Personally I find recycling news boring and stale and something that I personally don’t enjoy at all, but seeing as people can’t handle a differing opinion I suppose it will have to do to keep all the little cherubs from the Ben Arfa article happy 🙂

  11. Dubtoon, I was thinking about the whole age thing. I reckon he has a good 4 years left in him at this level yet easily. He neverhas had loads of pace so we dont need to worry about him losing his legs. He’s all about vision, passing and calmness. I remember some top midfoelder saying once that it was frustrating in his latter years as his brain was still sharp as anything, but his body was just letting go and couldnt keep up.

I dont think that is something we need to worry about too much with ‘ol Captain Caveman.

      (Quote)

  12. Shamrock – Agreed. It won’t be like Owen where if his legs go that’s it. Colo relies more on reading the game instead of raw physical attributes such as pace. That kind of thing can only get better with age. Colo is our very own fine wine 🙂

      (Quote)

  13. I agree too shamrock and nice analogy toonsy. Definitely think he has a few good years left and i wouldn’t be worried about giving him a four year deal but i just wonder if the owner see it the same way. Unfortunately there’s also the possibility that they give him a deal just so that he has a resale value at the end of this season or next. Bloody hope not like 👿

  14. Toonsy, I hope you haven’t been put off expressing your thoughts and opinions by a few morons.
You weren’t the only one to raise an eyebrow of suspision.

      (Quote)

  15. Yes Dubbers, that kind of fear is always in the back of or minds after some of the clubs past shenanigans. It’s probably best to just not go there and hope they realise this squad could be special if they hang onto it’s core players!

      (Quote)

  16. Ice – if he is struggling there is about 100 or so people on an older thread somewhere who will carry him back home on a thrown if needs be 😉

      (Quote)

  17. Yeah shamrock best not to worry about it for the moment, they’ll have to sign him up for that first anyway 😛

      (Quote)

  18. BB @ 18 – No of course not. I’ll just need to canvass opinion first so i can gauge what I can write 😛

      (Quote)

  19. hope we tie colo up like hes a top player the only small thing i would say is i would like to see him win more headers in the box from corners ect in defence a little point as our defence is doing great, cannot have everything like 😉

  20. On the plus side, Colo is extremely fit, unlike our previous captain, which has to be taken into consideration, when looking at length of contract on offer.

      (Quote)

  21. Colo still has 22 months of his current contract left, so I assume we would all like this tied up by when? End of this season? Earlier maybe?
I know Jonas has just re signed, but he is younger than Colo.

      (Quote)

  22. As has been said, Jonas and Collo are different cases as they are incredibly fit and savvy/intelligent players who keep their mouths shut and just get on with it. They are the type of players who can play well into their 30s I think

      (Quote)

  23. I don’t agree with this 😈 KILL TOONSY DIE DIE DIE!!! 😈 for having an opinion different to mine!

      (Quote)

  24. Seriously though, I think we would have offered colo a new contract already, i’m guessing ashley wants him to take a wage drop… then again though it was ashley who offered him the 80k contract in the 1st place! Obviously i’d love hi to stay tho!

      (Quote)

  25. Whats required here is negotiation, the one thing ashley doesn’t do.
Makes me think he will be given a one time only, take it or leave it, final offer.
Ha ha its hard not to be pessimistic about it tbh :(:

  26. Just out of interest Toonsy, is the mobile site different to the full site?
As everytime I try it on my phone, I just get the same as this one, which fills my phone memory. Do I need a different address or sumat?

  27. What was obvious about the criticism on the Ben Arfa thread, was that most of the posters were new to the blog or very infrequent posters. Let’s not lose sight of that Toonsy. We shouldn’t refer to them as ‘cum guzzlers’ it ain’t fair or appropriate. I appreciate that only I have thought of them in that context.

  28. Hitman, i would love if the club did something to honour his anniversary every year, like stage a friendly against one of his former clubs with the proceeds going to his foundation, or say on his 10 year anniversary a tournament with, sa, ourselves, barca, psv, fulham or something like that. You could obviously add teams like ipswich, lisbon, porto, england or ireland select teams depending on availability/willingness. I really hope his legacy is continued for as long as possible and that all kids growing up in england now know who he is and what a great man he was.
    RIP

  29. I sincerely hope we hold onto this lad. It took him a fair while to settle in and he now seems content, whilst also displaying top form. As Shamrock says, our defence has been shabby to say the least for a long time now, and it looks like we’re finally turning the corner in all areas of the pitch. Cracking ‘keeper, solid defence, good holding AND attacking/creative midfielders both in the centre and on the flanks, and we also appear to have strikers who can score goals. I’d still like to see another forward mind.

….Dubtoon, is that a penguin with the wings of a swan ❓ ….symbolic of black and white taking flight?

  30. BB – It depends on your phone. It’s all automatic depending on the OS your phone is using. Like my HTC gets the full version all the time because it’s a Windows phone and if I changed the settings for Windows pretty much everyone would get the mobile site. iPhone’s get the mobile site though.

hat phone have you got and I’ll have a root 🙂

  33. For what it’s worth they should extend his contract by 2 years and then see. He’s far and away the best centre back we’ve had in a long long time. Off topic but ICE, can you imagine Allchurch, Eastham and White ahead of the midfield we’ve got now?

      (Quote)

  34. ICE – who was that? Stokoe? First one I can really remember was McGrath. He was pretty good. It’s Colo’s coolness and ball skills that really impress me. And the fitness of him and Jonas – fantastic!

  35. GEORGIO aye mate, thing is to me the fitness level, eating the right things ect has made a vast diff to the game today.

  38. Forgot Brennan – bit before my time really. All I can remember is McGrath never taking prisoners!

  39. BB- Dave has something like that and he had the same problem so I tinkered with the settings and now he gets the mobile site. If you can nail the exact model (6600, 6500 or whatever) I can try and do the same for you.

  40. From what I have been able to find so far many of our players’ wages are overestimated. I think based on what I can find that Colo actually earns 70K a week, not 80K so that should be to our advantage. I think he would accept the same wage for another 4 year contract (ie. 2 years added on). I don’t think he would accept a heavily performance incentive laden contract as he has already proven himself. I hope management will be fair with him and offer what he deserves. To those that say he would be very expensive to replace on a like for like basis I agree but knowing our owner that would not happen. Ashley and Llambias would probably try to bring in a much younger player with good potential (ala Santon at LB) at a much lower wage and hope that Saylor would be the mentor at the point when Colo leaves. This is a key player for us as many have said. Will the owner do the right thing?
