A true sign of a winning team?

All aboard the dreamboat
Yesterday’s game saw Newcastle United run out 1-0 winners against Wigan after an 81st minute goal from our French midfield dynamo Yohan Cabaye.

It was his first goal in a Black and White shirt and it was a superb finish in a game where perhaps we were not on our top form.

However the game showed that even though our performance was below standard we still came out winners after Alan Pardew shuffled the pack in order to gain all three points. This is key in keeping our unbeaten run going, even if we aren’t playing well, but to still pick up all the points in a game such as a day that is a true demonstration of a very capable side.

There have been other instances of this earlier on in the season, if I recall correctly the away game at Molineux was a game where they piled pressure on us and thanks to a lucky decision we too won that game.

To me, winning when aren’t playing very well is key. It means we don’t drop points that we may have done during last season. There has been a big improvement in the sides performances this year, we seem to be playing a better standard of football and it certainly has paid off. There will be times when our performances will not be to the standard that they have been already this season but in a game like yesterday a moment of brilliance from certain players can provide the killer instinct for us.

What next for our invicibles? First we have the cup game away to Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night. Personally I would like to see some changes to the side. I feel Sylvain Marveaux is pushing for a start in the team and he contributed to Yohan Cabaye’s match winning goal. I would also like to see Davide Santon perhaps to take over at the right-back slot as Ryan Taylor seems to have cemented himself in the left-back slot for the foreseeable future. Maybe Pardew could include a couple of youngsters in the side too to see how they are developing.

After the cup tie we face Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium. I’m hoping for a better result than the humiliating 4-0 defeat last year but that could be a tough game between the two sides. The next fixture after the Stoke game will be against Everton and I think these two games will allow us to continue our tremendous start to the season.

Who would of thought nine games into the season we would have amassed nineteen points? I think we will surprise a lot of people and pundits this year in our forthcoming games.

Howay the lads!

  2. Santon, marveaux, fergie, HBA, shola and abeid/guthrie/gosling in for me. Would be happy to see harper given a game but would be nervous of elliot coming in. Hopefully sammy/ vuckic from the bench too.

More worried about that stoke match than i have been for any other match this season.

    Nice article Zoe

  3. Can people please look at Man City and Chelsea’s fixtures so far this season and tell me in what way we have had an easier start,
I hadn’t noticed before, but Tottenham aside City really haven’t had to play any of the teams that should be challenging for the champs league and yet I have never heard anyone say they have had an easy start.

Dare I say it? I think if Man U win they’ll stroll to the title. Their opening fixtures have been the hardest I’ve ever seen, they’ve already played their 5 competitors in their first 9 games.

  4. Great article, every single game this season we have matched or surpassed our expectations. Last year we would get a good result, then ruin it with a home defeat, I dont see that happening as much this season.

Before the Wigan game I said I would be happy with 7 points in the next 6 games, I still stand by that. Probably a bit pessimistic. But that would leave us with 23 points off 14 games. And with Swansea & West Brom home after that I think there’s a real chance we could be at 30 points by the half way stage this season.

Incidentally, if you’ve ever wondered what you call a dog with two dicks, I have the answer.

  7. feels good to be a winner with class players in the team and an owner who genuinely wants success and appears to have some good ideas about how to achieve it, lets sing praises and thank the lord that he didnt give up on us all when the bedsheet and brickwallers were crying and moaning and groaning … yaaahoooooo 4TH!! SING IT HALLELUJAH

  8. We are gathered here today on this lovely Sunday to bear witness to the slaying of the neggers and the groaners and the moaners and to instead sing praises and give thanks for the CLASS we have in wor team and the actions of those currently working at wor club who are giving us something to get BUZZZZZYYYY about .. some cudnt see it working with the current regime ( some cud 😉 ) , and the ones that cud see it are happy to say that its ok for the ones that cudnt see it cuz we are all supporters together … and we all want NUFC to be successful …. praise be.

  12. Are people really calling him a dreamboat?? I mean fair enough if you’re that way inclined, who am I to argue? Little bit on the “scenty” side for my liking though but.

  13. I understand the reference point, Nolan being captain Tugboat and all, but it all seems a bit “Bunty” to be calling the bloke Dreamboat like. Conjures up a disturbing image of 40 odd thousand balding, pot bellied Geordies screaming like pre pubescent girls at a Justin Beiber concert. : )

  14. Good article Zoe and agree re the changes for the Blackburn game. It was hard work yesterday but these are definetley the games we would have ended up losing in the past so I’m thrilled with the result.
Have lost track on the record bit but isn’t it the best start for 14 years or is it 19 years?
Love seeing how the team all celebrate together when someone scores – they all look genuinely thrilled. Thought Monsieur Pardieu gave a good post major interview – calling our performance yesterday more flat bitter than champagne! I like the fact he says it how it is, giving credit to the other team but also not trying to BS re our performances.
Walking in a Pardieu wonderland 😀

  15. Alright fellow Geordies…..

    Great goal and result yesterday!!

I for one am happy with a win and a slow performance, the lads did well to keep a clean sheet and you only have to look at the Liverspunk game to realise things don’t always go the way they should, especially in the PL.

I’ve heard a few negative takes on Ben Arfas performance yesterday which is ridiculous, as someone pointed out earlier tiote was below par in his first few games so he does need time. Also I thought he was everywhere: left, right, dropped-deep and was even alongside shola for a bit which is something we’ve lacked for a long time, it also allows us a link up to play better footy on the deck.
Shola (no matter what people say his touch and control is far superior than Best and Ba) again looked good when he came on as did Marveaux who looked like a real class act aswell.
Jonas? What’s happened to him – absolutely class. Great game and gave us a constant supply on the left, takes people on and has an eye for a pass. MOTM for me.

Saylor – you’ve got to have a bit of mettle to play with a broken nose well done son!!

Overall after watchin Liverpool slip up I was over the moon we ground a result out and Cabaye scored a cracker!

  16. MrT76 – for some of us he is definetley ‘dreamboat’. I know it’s all about appreciating their football skill but at the same time it’s also an added bonus for some of us to look at the gorgeous Cabaye’s or Ginola’s face rather than Beardo’s toothless mush (apologies to St Peter) but you know what i mean. 😆 So I guess the dreamboat reference is for a section of the crowd

  17. Also felt that yesterday that like a few times already this season Wigan predominantly attacked down or left (Raylor) and sooner or later we’ll be punished for his lack of pace. Although he put a good ball in for the goal, if he hadn’t I’d be calling for him to be hooked next match!

  18. Geordie Deb

I have no problem whatsoever in toon fans of the female persuasion referring to him as such. It’s when grown men are doing the same…….wierds me out a bit 😐

Maybe I’m just not 21st century enough!! 😆

  19. At present we have some very good players on our books and if our form continues the vultures will come hovering. We have one 20 million pound player on our books. Tim Krul. Best in the premier league. Barca or Real for him in the future

  20. Man U down to 10 men 🙂

Or should I say players and not men due to the apparent sexual fragility some people have 😆

  21. The Sunday Sun article today re how we are targeting above board top drawer agents was brilliant.

What’s fantastic, is that although it takes time to change such a large group of players, who are on highly paid contracts, (and this season is still a season of transition) we have in my opinion, outperformed every other club in terms of improvement. And to do that whilst keeping financial constraints is a credit to the board.

If we do sell a trophy player every year to keep us sustainable – but we still improve – so be it.

I can’t wait to see our team at the 31st August 2012. Could be the best team of the last 15years.

  22. I loved that result. 6-1. Shocker. Hate man utd so its great to see. We dont have a chance with the top 4 anyway so i want man city to run away with it now.

  23. Glad that stoke have just lost too Arsenal 3-1 , makes me think that we have a chance of 3 points against them at their place . If we do win then their is a big gap opening up between us and midtable for when we get that run of games against the big teams . 6 points from the Stoke and Everton games and i will truly start believing Europa league is possible .

      (Quote)

  24. Hard to think of Man U getting beaten 6-1 after recent seasons although I suppose teams like Barcelona and City are capable of it. If it is the two Manchester derbies that will decide the title then the result looks pretty obvious already I suppose. Man U have a habit of catching up and grinding out wins though. I wonder what colour Fergies face was in the dressing room. 😳

  25. Stoke are a completely different proposition at home – today’s result is irrelevant. If we get a result there, we’ll be doing well

      (Quote)

  26. I think Simmo had a very good game for us against Wigan-wouldn’t change the back 4, only switch I’d make is Marveux for Obertan and Benny for Best
