Yesterday’s game saw Newcastle United run out 1-0 winners against Wigan after an 81st minute goal from our French midfield dynamo Yohan Cabaye.
It was his first goal in a Black and White shirt and it was a superb finish in a game where perhaps we were not on our top form.
However the game showed that even though our performance was below standard we still came out winners after Alan Pardew shuffled the pack in order to gain all three points. This is key in keeping our unbeaten run going, even if we aren’t playing well, but to still pick up all the points in a game such as a day that is a true demonstration of a very capable side.
There have been other instances of this earlier on in the season, if I recall correctly the away game at Molineux was a game where they piled pressure on us and thanks to a lucky decision we too won that game.
To me, winning when aren’t playing very well is key. It means we don’t drop points that we may have done during last season. There has been a big improvement in the sides performances this year, we seem to be playing a better standard of football and it certainly has paid off. There will be times when our performances will not be to the standard that they have been already this season but in a game like yesterday a moment of brilliance from certain players can provide the killer instinct for us.
What next for our invicibles? First we have the cup game away to Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night. Personally I would like to see some changes to the side. I feel Sylvain Marveaux is pushing for a start in the team and he contributed to Yohan Cabaye’s match winning goal. I would also like to see Davide Santon perhaps to take over at the right-back slot as Ryan Taylor seems to have cemented himself in the left-back slot for the foreseeable future. Maybe Pardew could include a couple of youngsters in the side too to see how they are developing.
After the cup tie we face Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium. I’m hoping for a better result than the humiliating 4-0 defeat last year but that could be a tough game between the two sides. The next fixture after the Stoke game will be against Everton and I think these two games will allow us to continue our tremendous start to the season.
Who would of thought nine games into the season we would have amassed nineteen points? I think we will surprise a lot of people and pundits this year in our forthcoming games.
Howay the lads!
