Game on! Blackburn v Newcastle

Howay the lads!
Welcome one and all to the ‘Game on’ article which will take us through the Carling Cup match away at Blackburn Rovers this evening.

A place in the Quarter Finals awaits the winner of the tie this evening, and there will be a winner tonight as there are no replays and extra time and penalties will be used if needed.

Extra time is something that NUFC aren’t strangers to having scraped through the last two rounds thanks to the additional 30 minutes of playing time. First time out we just about scraped by Scunthorpe United thanks to a Sammy Ameobi special while in the last round it took a header from Fabricio Coloccini right at the end of extra time to give Newcastle the advantage in a seven goal thriller.

Tonight it’s Blackburn, who seem to have taken over our mantle as the comedy club of the Premier League. The fans are not happy with things at Ewood Park and are making their feelings known. They want Kean out and will remain vocal until it happens, which is why talk of a new contract for the pug-faced Scot made me chuckle.

In contrast Newcastle will be taking in the region of 4,000 fans to Ewood Park, which is staggering for a midweek cup game in fairness. They will occupy the Darwen End this evening and will be in fine voice as always. Hopefully we get a superb result to match their superb support!

For those who aren’t going I have to admit that trying to locate a video stream has proved fruitless thus far. You never know, one may turn up, but at the moment it looks as though we may have to make do with radio commentary only. As ever, if you find anything feel free to share the link.

That just about sums it up really. A place in Quarter Final of the Carling Cup? It would be nice wouldn’t it? Should we get through this evening the draw will be on Saturday at around midday.

  1. I agree about Simpson, but I expected that. We all know Simpson is a pretty average player. Colo is far from average, and rarely makes such elementary mistakes. Hence why I felt the need to highlight them.

  2. 😆 @807. Toonsy, yet again Simmo shows he is overrated by a fair few. Not the worst we have had by any means, but one of our weak links and we will do so much better when we get shot of him and replace him with a bit of class…

  3. Well it’s Stoke City next. Hate to say it, but with Tiote struggling I think we will lose that one too. No big deal, we can afford that one. Ifwe get anything out of it at all then we are really onto something. It wont get much tougher this season than Stoke away in terms of chasing a top 7 or 8 finish…

  5. Rodz, have you ever considered doing an article? Like Archie’s alternative match assessments, I reckon you would add a unique, amusing & intelligent twist for us readers to enjoy 💡

  6. Shamrock, cheers mate. I have to admit the thought has crossed my mind quite a few times. It may be a trifle bizarre in places, but I think I could do a job ❓ I like the sound of ‘alternative assessment’ too.

…guess I was probably waiting for a nudge. Consider me nudged. 😎

  7. Good man. Toonsy is really supportive and I reckon your stuff will go down well with us lot. I look forward to reading your first foray into the other side 😉

  8. I guess I’ll need to drum up a theme first. One that can be carried forward on a weekly basis. Knowing what I’m like, it’d probably be best suited for late night entertainment. I’m on it……..

  9. Kid – This is why it is important to keep central defence pairing together. As soon as one loses the other, the instinctive understanding is gone and positioning, passing, when to move etc all go out the window. I dont doubt he had a bad game, but there will be reasons for it – especially the amount of times Blackburn were allowed into our final 3rd in the first place…

I’ll forgive him this one seeing as he has been so awesome so far this season!

Not too late eh Rodz, otherwise we will all be talking different languages! 😆

I am the same. He is allowed the odd bad game. I haven’t got a witch-hunt in mind for Colo. I am just trying to prove a point as I was mocked when I criticised his performance earlier.

  12. The Kid, the Daily Mail makes my eyes bleed. I fear following up that link due to previous ocular encumberments.

That article is actually surprisingly favourable to NUFC.

It says the Krul penalty wasn’t one and that we had numerous penalty shouts turned down, perhaps unfairly.

  14. Shamrock, guess I’ll have to badger Toonsy for the 9pm Sunday night slot then (after I’ve got Songs of Praise and Antiques Roadshow out the way).

…in fact, I could try starting up a new religion/cult, in a black-and-white-rub-a-dub David Koresh stylee.

  15. I think the problem with the Mail, is that they are generally angry with everything. My father in law reads it, so I pick it up and start reading on Sundays – ony to slam it back down on the table and wish its writers were all involved in some unfortunate accident – all at the same time. 😈

Kid – I know that mate. Fair point, some people just dont like hero’s being dragged through the mud, but a fact is a fact. He had a bad game if the commentators are to be believed…

  16. At least we went doen fighting. Sounded a good game, 2nd half and extra time anyway. As much as I wanted to win this cup, if anybody was to have a bad game, better to do it now and hopefully keep getting points on the board ready for our hard November run

  17. ‘Reverend Rodzilla’s Sunday Disservice’ – Actually has a nice ring to it and suits you to a tee! 😆

  18. Yes Simon. It will be a tough couple of months now, but we dont need to keep up the unbeaten run to stay amongdt the top 8 – just the odd few points will do. I just hope people dont start panicking if Stoke turn us over…

  19. Great effort, and a total shock as I left work with us 2-0 down with 90 on the clock.

Anyway can’t help but feel the next two games are huge for us. We are having a great season but going in to that run of three games with a head of steam is essential. Let’s say we draw the next two then fail to beat any of the big three. That would be 5 without a win and then the whole atmosphere changes. I have faith in the team and manager though so hopefully we’ll get a result on Monday.

  20. fkinell get a new server Toonsy you tight get, this page takes yonks to load.

…on a 1nil/cap’n Curlo front, I watched the first goal a few times on the highlights, and I’d struggle to blame that one on anyone other that Tiote, for not being there.

And at a potential 1-1, Ba had a stone wall penalty, Samba brought himself down first, fatigued through the sheer might of flooring Ba. Game changing decision that lead to their penalty, which was the result of a badly-received offside ball anyway.

Or maybe that was just my telly being blatantly not wide enough.

    SACK MY TELLY!

  22. But then, it’s quite understandable how playing for Coventry City and being a part of the Green Party can send one over the edge…

  23. …feel free to comment on tonight’s game, infidels. I’m just playing in my ethereal sandpit. Any new bucket designs would be welcome. Sick of these fkn tagliatelle shaped ones.

  24. Just got back.

    What a fcker!

Cannot fault the lads for effort but really we didn’t play well and Blackburn did look dangerous everytime they went forward.

Unbelievable really to come back from the brink twice only to lose on the last minute ourselves. Think if have rather lost 2-0 in normal time or I certainly feel like that now.

  25. I wouldn’t blame LSD for the troubles of Icke, Shamrock. He was obviously sufficiently warped beforehand.

  26. …aye Shamrock, I remember it well. The **** hit the fan for me from all angles in August. Sick parents, hospitals, fatha heart ops, unexpected strokes, closely followed by redundancy; was a slap in the chops to say the least. I still have my health, and mind.

What doesn’t kill yer though Shamrock. you ****.

    😎

  27. Yep. Well I hope it all works out in the end mate. Sounds like it could be a long road but keep battling away.

No need for the insult though you w@nker. That’s me out. Night night. 😉

  29. Toonsy man, there’s nee way am gona break the fkn land-speed record here. Taking app. 4 secs per post. I’d be quite happy just pressing letters that made rude words for an hour or so, but I guess Les Claypool at the Royal Albert Hall on April 5th 2012 is something I must not avoid.

  30. Interesting Rodz.

I have to say that I gave up at 2-0. More fool me. The team spirit is amazing and the fighting for the cause gives me enormous hope for the season. I know we lost in the end but last season I just dont think we wouldve pulled it back and all be dissapointed that we hadnt won.

Stoke on Monday is a massive test for us. I am hopeful that Saylor is back and perhaps Raylor and Santon play in the full back positions, which way round I am not sure.

I think we must play 4-2-3-1 and flood the midfield. Ba must be the lone man and hopefully Benny boy will be back to sorts. I think Marveux again deserves a start, but the big one is to have Tiote back in there with Cabaye. What a buy the man has been. Where is Troy with his negativity towards the dreamboat?! Not as good as Tugboat?! Jog on matey. He has more talent in his left testiclay!

Dissapointing to lose, but I think its the manner in which we lost which is so good. Fighting to the death. We need points against Stoke and Everton cos Manure and Chelski are too good, and forget Man City at the Etihad. No chance.
