Striker deal done?

Maiga deal to be done in January?
Newcastle have all but secured the services of a long time transfer target according to selected pundits and press-packers, although a name is understandably yet to be confirmed.

Alan Brazil commented on his radio show yesterday and insisted that a deal to bring in a striker from France was “100% done” although I remain sceptical until something turns up on the official website. However since then several other people have latched on to it and seem to go along with what Brazil was saying, including Mark Douglas who I personally hold in very high regard when it comes to transfer targets and speculation. Hi Mark…

Of course the name that everyone expects it to be will be that of Modibo Maiga who despite being in a fine run of form is still unable to shake off the Sochaux boo boys after his antics in the summer where he effectively refused to play for the club as they didn’t accept a deal for him to leave the club.

While Maiga might be the overwhelming favourite in terms if adding a striker, he isn’t the only candidate. I only say this because Newcastle have a habit of pulling something unexpected out of the hat in terms of transfers, so should we expect this alleged one to be any different?

While Liverpool turn to Tyneside for all of their scouting needs, we tend to turn to France. That in turn means that there is a fairly long list of French players or players based in France that we’ve been liked with. Mevlut Eridinc is one and Nolan Roux is another. Moussa Sow….. You get the point.

I’m hopeful that there is a striker lined up for January. In fact I’m hopeful that there is a striker and defender lined up for January if truth be told. To me, if we get both, then we will have a very good squad with options all over the pitch. That, in only our second season back in the Premier League, would be cracking.

Time will tell of course as transfer windows usually leave a bitter after taste in the mouth of NUFC fans, initially anyway, and there is always a chance we could see players sold aswell as brought in. However it’s important not to get too downhearted when a player leaves, even though it’s tough not to at times. I think the replacements we’ve found have been more than adequate and I think the club have earned our trust a little bit on that. They’ve earned mine anyway.

What do you make of it though? Do you think the rumours are true? Do you think it’s Maiga or someone else? What do you want to see in January?

  3. I am annoyed by our fans and the Lu pool fans…. After the summer transfer we have done. I for 1 will let the people in charge do the talking and signing. To be honest this is the best signings we had for a long time … Sell or buy all I care is adequate replacement if sold. But bring in a decent back n striker this transfer and am happy. Who wants andyC when we have ba.. Who is leading the scoring chart now….. Who needs nolo when we have cabl…. Who needs Barton when we have replaced 2 different wingers…. Enqi was replaced by santo… But time will tell but am happy with rtylo….fergi…. Let’s not sign too many players… And give our youths a chance to prove…

  4. The league cup is different. If the winner is in Europe then it doesn’t go to the loser. Instead it goes to the next highest place in the league.

  6. Max T, spot on buddy!!

Keith, I think we need 4 but will probs get 2, 3 at a push. We need to get afew off the books as well tho so the young uns can push on thro the ranks.
    Time for our next disagreement:
For me, the is only one true Geordie legend… Sir Bobby Robson, god rest his soul.
Keegan done many good things but like I say, I think by wanting success in a hurry, set our club back in terms of youth development.
He also walked out on us on 2 separate occasions. Que you saying “coz the lying board lied to him and brought in Wise” and all that bollocks. Well here’s the think for me, Hughton and Pardew have has to put up with the same board and haven’t walked away, turning their back on the fans. Don’t hate Keegan, just dont believe he deserves his status.
Now, 3 points tom night please to put us 3rd by 2 points, and only 1 point behind man u in second. The stronger we look come Jan the more we can compete for those signings in the transfer window

  8. Just watched Freiburg’s Cisse again on the Bundesliga highlights from yesterday…he never scored but man is that bloke a handful, Duracell man…always moving, powerful, lightning fast, great finisher, and is a great one-touch player with his back to the goal… Probably the reason whay he has a 18 million fee on his head… 🙁 .

  9. I don’t think Cisse is established enough to risk 18m on to be honest.
I’ll start be saying “I know this won’t happen” (just so I’m not jumped on)
But if we were to spend such a big fee, Defoe could be an option, sat on the bench at spurs at the mo and with Rooney suspended for England, Defoe will want to be playing.
Maybe even a loan deal for the rest of the season…?
I already said, I know it won’t happen!!

  10. sharpy @86 it was hughtons first managment role and pardew had been out of work for ages they knew what they were signing up for , keegan is an established manager who was told he had the final say on transfers in and out ( hense the tribunarel ) a little bit different me thinks.
sharpy if we sign 1 player id be happy and i love your positivity , and we are doing brilliant woop woop but lets just wait and see if mike ( big spender ) ashley brings anyone in and more importantly sells any more quality players like defoe !!! or cisse !!!
I have to admit though i find it really baffling that a lot of intelligent fans think we will spend and wont sell am i missing something ?
