Currently the club are without both a stadium name, and a centre forward, so as expected there’s going to be rumours all over the place between now and next summer.
I love a good rumour personally, it’s something to discuss and at the minute with only “bad” news looming over the club a rumour would be a nice change from the constant doom and gloom.
According to the papers this morning St James Park may not stay named the “Sports Direct Arena” for very long, as Mike Ashley has lined up an American business to take over the stadium naming rights. The Express went as far to claim that we were closing in on a naming rights deal. The naming rights are something which has reportedly received lots of interest, mainly from American based companies, including Nike.
There’s a very long way to go, and it’s just rumours at the minute, but I’d personally love Nike to take over the sponsorship deal. They’re a reputable company with a very strong brand; they may also take up the deal to make our shirts as well when the Puma deal ends, which would be very good.
That’s the naming rights rumours cleared up, and I’m sure it’ll not be the last of them in the coming weeks and months. Now it’s time to look at the player rumours, January is only a month and a half away now and we’ll be compiling lists of targets now, hopefully.
The first link is Roma’s centre forward Bojan, it seems a bit of a far-fetched rumour but we all thought the same about the likes of Ben Arfa. Bojan reportedly has some personal problems which have stopped him achieving the heights he expected to achieve after coming through the ranks at Barcelona.
Something that makes me think this is extremely unlikely is the money Roma paid, they paid 12 million euros and after 2 seasons Barcelona can buy Bojan back for a fee of 12 million euros. Roma can however prevent Barcelona from re-signing him if they pay an extra 28 million euros, confusing stuff eh? I personally don’t think that we’d shell out anything like that kind of money.
Once again Mark Douglas at the Sunday Sun has confirmed that the Modibo Maiga deal will be done in January, and I’d be inclined to believe him as he’s the best journalist which the North East currently have and he’s been reliable on most other NUFC based news. Maiga will bring something different to our forward line, and fans will be happy that we’ve finally brought in that long awaited striker.
A deal for Erik Pieters has however hit the rocks due to the demands of the Dutch defenders representatives. Pieters is desperate to join Newcastle and the club are willing to pay the 7 million pounds which his club PSV want. It looks unlikely that we’ll return to Pieters unless the stance of his representatives has changed.
It also seems that a deal for Birmingham defender Liam Ridgewell is off the cards as other players have jumped ahead of him on Alan Pardew’s hitlist. Ridgewell is someone who I’d have liked, as long as he was just as back-up because he wouldn’t improve our current defence as much as someone like Erik Pieters would.
That’s just a few of the rumours that I’ve read this week, what do you think of them? Are any of them realistic?
