Rumours, rumours and more rumours!

Come on Mike, Just Do It!
Currently the club are without both a stadium name, and a centre forward, so as expected there’s going to be rumours all over the place between now and next summer.

I love a good rumour personally, it’s something to discuss and at the minute with only “bad” news looming over the club a rumour would be a nice change from the constant doom and gloom.

According to the papers this morning St James Park may not stay named the “Sports Direct Arena” for very long, as Mike Ashley has lined up an American business to take over the stadium naming rights. The Express went as far to claim that we were closing in on a naming rights deal. The naming rights are something which has reportedly received lots of interest, mainly from American based companies, including Nike.

There’s a very long way to go, and it’s just rumours at the minute, but I’d personally love Nike to take over the sponsorship deal. They’re a reputable company with a very strong brand; they may also take up the deal to make our shirts as well when the Puma deal ends, which would be very good.

That’s the naming rights rumours cleared up, and I’m sure it’ll not be the last of them in the coming weeks and months. Now it’s time to look at the player rumours, January is only a month and a half away now and we’ll be compiling lists of targets now, hopefully.

The first link is Roma’s centre forward Bojan, it seems a bit of a far-fetched rumour but we all thought the same about the likes of Ben Arfa. Bojan reportedly has some personal problems which have stopped him achieving the heights he expected to achieve after coming through the ranks at Barcelona.

Something that makes me think this is extremely unlikely is the money Roma paid, they paid 12 million euros and after 2 seasons Barcelona can buy Bojan back for a fee of 12 million euros. Roma can however prevent Barcelona from re-signing him if they pay an extra 28 million euros, confusing stuff eh? I personally don’t think that we’d shell out anything like that kind of money.

Once again Mark Douglas at the Sunday Sun has confirmed that the Modibo Maiga deal will be done in January, and I’d be inclined to believe him as he’s the best journalist which the North East currently have and he’s been reliable on most other NUFC based news. Maiga will bring something different to our forward line, and fans will be happy that we’ve finally brought in that long awaited striker.

A deal for Erik Pieters has however hit the rocks due to the demands of the Dutch defenders representatives. Pieters is desperate to join Newcastle and the club are willing to pay the 7 million pounds which his club PSV want. It looks unlikely that we’ll return to Pieters unless the stance of his representatives has changed.

It also seems that a deal for Birmingham defender Liam Ridgewell is off the cards as other players have jumped ahead of him on Alan Pardew’s hitlist. Ridgewell is someone who I’d have liked, as long as he was just as back-up because he wouldn’t improve our current defence as much as someone like Erik Pieters would.

That’s just a few of the rumours that I’ve read this week, what do you think of them? Are any of them realistic?

  2. I used to work for NIKE a few years back, great company towork for and would be good suppliers of kit. Not happy about the name change, but the extra cash would be nice. be even better if they or whoever kee St James in it somehow, make more people want to use that business

  3. Actually it’s quite a surprise that Nike aren’t more involved with a major football club. This could be our big chance. I think if Ashley pulled this one off it would be absolutely immense !

  4. Agree, Nike would be probably be the best company we could get and like you say after the Puma deal ends hopefully they would take over the kits as well.

Regarding which defender we’ll hopefully bring in, I’m going to stick with it’ll be Dunk at Brighton 😉

  7. As much as I never liked the original idea, but the NIKE Arena @ St James Park or O2 @ St James Park works for me now or even St James Park O2/Nike Arena, even Just St James Nike/O2 Arena. Sort of meet in the middle, get cash in, keep some history and vast majority stay happy

  9. Maiga is being thrown to us as a done deal and now the press are linking us to Bojan because he has not settled into Italian football and is a striker and all strikers have to be linked to us.

Newcastle always spring a surprise and my money is still on Vossen.

  11. FSOTC, I have a season ticket and when it comes to the Chelsea game, I won’t feel any different going to my seat, going to watch the team I love in one of the best stadiums around just because ‘officially’ it has a different name that will bring in extra money to the club.

  18. want to win over the fans – come in with a public statement to leave SJP as SJP and put your sponsors name all over the kit. I could live with that. What’s in it for the sponsor ??? massive credibility with the Geordie nation!

  19. by, how veiws can change after only 1 day. just proves how fickle we are.

Nike e is a newer version. in the 70’s 80’s 90’s it was never said as nike e. I heard my dad say it about 10yrs ago, he’s big with his golf/sky sports so maybe its the American way to say it..

  23. Although a lot of people on here and elsewhere seem to agree with Llambias I find it a strange time to come out with a rant like that. It reminds me of the Joe Kinnear days and is an embarrassment to the club. Surely he should be sacked if the statements are accurate? But no wait he is Ashley’s drinking buddy isn’t he? Who won the court case between Ashley and Keegan again? I seem to recall that Ashley was judged a liar and Keegan won the case and got a settlement? Is it possible Mike and Derek are still embarrassed about that?

      (Quote)

  24. G2…He should be embarrassed, but you need to be able to feel shame to be embarrassed, so probably he’s not 👿

  25. Still think Newcastle would be best served if Derek disappeared back to the casino and Ashley found a football man to run the club. No amount of ranting about local legends will make people welcome Llambias as managing director. Hasn’t he done enough damage yet? Apparently not. Maybe he should hide out in his office until the hangover subsides and then apologize to the city, the people he mentioned in his rant, and the club.

  27. righto, lets get rid of ashley, lambias, the rest of the newcastle board ____________not forgetting fat freddie who got us into this mess in the first place, by selling out to ashley, while we are at it lets get rid of john hall ,the man who gave us pretentions of being a top club in the first place! let us go back to the days of mckeag, when we played at a cattle market and any player who looked half decent was promptly sold without a penny going into the team! lets go back to the days when the only people with seats were those who could afford to become members and sit in the only stand we ever had which was reserved for the rich and famous! is that what we want? unless i am mistaken this is the 21st century and the clubs are owned and operated by big business. any business is expected to make profits and nufc is no different. ashley for all his faults has brought nufc back from the brink and should be respected for that, i for one would rather have a hard nosed owner who keeps us viable than a sentimental fool who takes us into receivership!

  28. thanks budgie, now we need 50,000 more to agree that the toon is in better shape now than in the 130years it has existed.(the much touted history). lambias made one big mistake………he stated private views off record to a bunch of morons who couldnt tell a balance sheet from a bed sheet. he should have made them in a press conference where they would be viewed in a totally different light. he was stupid but it does not make him wrong.lets see what he said. 1, carroll is not worth 35m. is there honestly one person in the world (except dagleish) who disagrees? i think not. 2..shearer was a hopeless manager…… fair enough, big al took on a hopeless task on hindsight, but he was not forced to take it! i seem to remember figures of 100,000quid per game and a bonus of 1million if we stayed up! not bad for 8 weeks work. 3.king kev not good enough. well he did spend over 60million in two years and won nowt, nuff said, that was 1996. how much is that in todays money? no doubt lambias will be in the shit with ashley over this or maybe it is the pr machine taking the heat off him for a while. ashley has made grave mistakes but has put them right ….eventually. it seems that he is finally leaving the football side of the business to those who know it best, the manager and coaches and as long as he sticks to what he knows best we should leave him to that, until one of the billionaires among the toon army buys the club.
