According to various sources, Newcastle United are close to agreeing terms with Auxerre for their winger Alain Traore.
Now I know what your thinking, not another rumour! But with this one, if it is just a rumour, at least it has some thought behind it is a transfer that could happen with our recent transfer activity.
So… the Burkina Faso midfielder is 22 years old, has scored 6 goals in 12 games this season, has a great left-foot, is very quick, surprisingly powerful for a winger and apparently shows maturity on and off the field beyond his years, sound good?
Manchester United were also tracking Traore a number of years ago and were interested in signing him although obtaining a work permit proved to be difficult. For him to bypass that he would have been sent to Royal Antwerp, a work permit feeder club for Man Utd, so he could gain EU citizenship. Auxerre swooped instead and the rest is history.
One problem could be, although everyone we buy from a foreign country has the element of risk about him, Traore carries a bigger risk in the sense that he has only started playing well this season so some people will say does 12 good games really warrant a move to the Premier League?
If he does end up joining us you can only assume Graham Carr and Alan Pardew think this lad is worth it and can grow into a Premier League player, a rough diamond if you want.
I’ve seen a few people already saying we have a lot of wingers at at the club already but if Traore were to join we would have; Jonas, Obertan, Marveaux and Traore as first team wingers and with him being only 22 he can still be considered a youngster amongst the squad.
I’m not sure what sort of fee Auxerre are looking at for this lad but at the start of the season he signed an extension on his current deal to take him to 2015.
All in all from what I’ve seen and heard this is someone who I’d like us to go for, if not January but in the summer.
What are you thoughts?
