Pardew allays fears over sale of stars

Alan Pardew
Alan Pardew has said that he doesn’t expect any of our main players to be leaving club in the next transfer window, unless a silly money offer comes in for one of our stars.

The statement comes hot on the heels of renewed interest in Cheik Tiote from Chelsea who are said to be pondering a £20 million bid in January.

Last January said the same thing about Andy Carroll, and we all know how that ended up! However the justification for it at the time was that we weren’t in a position as a club to turn down the deal and he warned that it could happen again. However that stance has changed.

When asked about any potential sale of his star players, Pardew told the Mirror: “It is going to cost a hell of a lot of money, a hell of a lot of money because we’re in that position now.”

“I think any of our players that get linked to other clubs, those clubs are going to need to know they’ll need to pay a shed load of money to get anyone out of this football club.”

He added: “I don’t envisage anyone going out in this window.”

“But if a club, one of the top clubs, comes in and wants to pay way, way over the odds we’ll have to look at it.”

To me this is the acid test. Are we going to try and build a team? Or are we going to cash in and attempt to replace any outgoing players? That is the question isn’t it?

I don’t think many people will argue that every player has a price, and if one of the top teams comes in for one of our players the likelihood is that the player will want to move. It’s part of football.

However this cost-cutting needs to have an upside somewhere. We’ve been told how great we are doing financially and how we are on course to break even so there should be no reason to sell. Time will tell of course.

Pardew then moved on to incoming players and gave us a bit of an idea of what we can expect in January.

“We have looked at the African Nations Cup and we have looked at the next window,” said Pardew. “I think the maximum we would do is two players in. That would be our maximum. Then if anyone left, it would be a third.”

So the upshot of this is that we don’t need to sell players now unless it is for silly money. Perhaps now we can start to build a team and squad with a view to improving longer term and not worry so much about players leaving?

I remain sceptical. Actions are louder than words!

  1. @toonsy.. I want to revise the question y’day regarding a rich investor or ‘as we are’.

I want a rich invester now. I said I’ll revisit the question in Jan after sales but it seem inevitable we will continue to sell our best players regardless of Euro places/team unity etc. We are nothing but a selling club that enjoys its football for the moment. Pards is proving to be a puppet again after great work. I expect Tiote and Krul to be gone in January, Pards has more or less indicated this.

I hope Ashley f**ks off & a wealthy investor takes us to where we belong.

  2. I think our policy is to sell players who are overvalued, and ensure that a replacement is at least lined up. This was not done for Carroll but was for Nolan & Barton. Enrique has been replaced by Santon, who currently cannot get in the team.

I doubt it m8, I thought the ‘old guard’ sales last year would be the last, I believed we would invest slowly to build on our league position making money through success on the pitch.

I now believe we’ll buy cheap sell them for profit until Ashley has made enuf to claw back his debt b4 leaving. I’m not happy with this, anyway tiote is worth more than £25mill

Pards has just sofened the blow with this news release.

  4. I’d hate to see Tiote go particularly if we have a real chance of qualifying for Europe. The problem is the club are still £100+million in debt to Ashley and a bid of £25-£30 million might be too good to turn down. Every player has a price though and we would have to rely on Carr to have someone else lined up. I’d be gutted but can see it happen in January or the summer

  5. I’d hate to see tiote go. Maybe more to it then Guthrie signing a new contract. Tiote is possible already gone 🙁

I’d love us to do a Spurs and refuse to sell players. Unfortunately Spurs want success on the pitch.

  6. If a player wants to leave what are we supposed to do? sell for a low price or sell for a high price? .. nothing to do with what MA or anyone else wants in that case .. it is the fans who create a misnomer such as ‘we are a selling club without ambition’ – Man Utd sold Ronaldo – every club is a selling club if a player wants to leave and the right price is offered.

Difference is ManU spent that money on buying lots of good players Jones Smalling Young etc
Fatty will keep the money and hope the scouts can find more players for him to make money on , not good news for the team .

  10. Pardew a puppet? Rubbish, I thought we had learned that by now. I don’t think any players will leave in January. Just because a newspaper is reporting of a possible bid, all the neggers are suggesting it’s already a done deal. I firmly believe there has been a change in attitude in the club and Ashley is enjoying the current “success”, maybe with the resulting financial windfalls in mind.

I firmly believe there has been a change in attitude,

so did I m8 but Tiote saying he was happy here, Guthrie signing a new contract & Pards talking about player leaving…but perhaps not in Jan suggest to me that players will leave in Jan.

Don’t get me wrong I think Pards is excellent for the toon but he’s a puppet in the way of accepting MA’s stance in sell sell regardless of success on the pitch.

  12. Didnt Lambastard say something like “you don’t know how ****ing nasty we can be!”
We proved by selling Carroll that we will sell our top players (and regardless of how he is playing now, he was our best player at the time)
That’s the difference between a club with ambition and a club who are prepared to cash in.
I could list numerous clubs who have had stupid money bids like spurs with Modric (ambitious club) or Everton with Phil jagielka (who need the money).
We will sell if big money is offered, no doubt.
Tiote and Cabaye will attract attention but they are on long contracts…. My concern is still for Coloccini who is on high wages and has still not signed a new deal.

  13. On the subject of players being lined up to move, we shouldn’t underestimate the attitude of the player in all of this. If the player get’s a better offer to develop himself on a sporting level and play against the best in the world, champs league every year etc, then his head will be turned for sure. Notwithstanding that he’ll more than likely get a canny pay increase into the bargain.

Of course with our lot we’ll never know the truth…”I was pushed..didn’t want to leave etc etc”….. the only thing for sure is that as always the fans will suffer..

What has Ashley done to make you “firmly believe there has been a change in attitude in the club ” actions speak louder than words and the Carroll money has still not been spent and theres lots of money comeing in and none getting spent on the team !

  15. mark…on the subect of Pardew being a puppet. What do you expect him to do mate, fall on his sword and quit his job, just cos Ashley has a chance to turn a 7 fold return on one of his “investments” ?

There are enough “pundits” sitting on sofas mate….he probably likes managing the toon. Doesn’t make him a “puppet” though.

I personally think Pardew has done a great job on both the footballing front, and on the media front communicating a good side to NUFC…

  16. Coming into a different phase of development under Ashley so it`s too hard to tell whether we will sell anybody no matter how important given a decent offer. Time will tell I guess. As for being a selling club to date, partially true but over exaggerated. Most if not all players we have sold under Ashley, especially post relegation can be justified.

Tiote will always have big names attached to him, he is a top four player. In fairness to the lad he has always come out after media speculation linking him with Chelsea and Man Utd saying he wants to stay at Newcastle. Do I think we would sell him if we got £25m? Probably, but for a team in our position that is just how it is, we are not a title contender or not in Europe every season.

I think Pardew is just being open and honest about it, which is what fans wanted was it not? The financial state of the club is now looking relatively healthy and Tiote is signed to a six year deal. Unlike before, we don`t HAVE to sell players but offers way over the odds always have to be considered. Every club is the same, even the big ones.

If clubs want Tiote they will have to pay at least £20m, and by the sounds of what happened with the Carroll deal we won`t accept annual installments either, money up front or on your bike, which not a lot of clubs will do, especially with FFP rules coming in.

      (Quote)

  17. I didn’t read Pardew’s comments as allaying any fears Toonsy. To me it reads like an advert for the NUFC January Sales! I would sum up his comments as “If you want Collocini or Tiote, come and get them – but it’ll cost you”.

so do I mate, I would roll the red carpet for Pards if I saw him but he’s a puppet in accepting our postion in selling our best players regardless of what we achieve as a football club. Hes a manager who should be proud of his achievements but seems content in his role as coach. he deserves more than MA is prepared to offer him.

I wouldnt want him to leave but other managers like Moyes, Redknapper would have a bigger stance than pards.

We were promised to see some of the £35 mill for a new striker, suppossedly on Maiga last window, but that fell thru now we have to sell the naming rights for £10mill to get maiga??

We’ll might be in a Euro position come Jan then sell players leaving us out of reach of that spot. is it worth it?

…it’s that last bit I didn’t like the sound of – the ‘replacements’ bit. This suggests to me they’re already negotiating outgoing deals.

I suppose we all know players will get sold if we’re offered a decent wedge. Of course we’re not a ‘selling club’ though.

  27. A real plus point out of the City game yesterday was the performance of Hatem Ben Arfa. It’s clear to see that this bloke can do things with the ball that few in the Premier League can match. He is a fantastic asset for the toon, Pardew needs to get his tactics right so that we can take advantage of this magician. He should start every game from now on imo. The bloke is world class..

From the fans point of view that was only shown briefly in the KK years. The list of players leaving has been constant in my many years as a supporter.I think Pardew is just covering himself for a future Carroll moment.Who decides what is “silly money” No doubt Ashley has ambition its to make money ours just happenes to be different.

What do we expect him to answer? Our players are not for sell? He said that and look what happened? We call him a liar. No comment? People will say that he’s indecisive. The fact is, Del Boy and MA are the one deciding whether we need to sell or not.

This has been said a thousand times before, we are all a puppet of our paymaster. Unless you are self-employed. But we can get another man of principle, like Keegan. Then we gonna have a new manager every time we sell a player.

  30. The 2 Manchester teams are pretty much unassailable at the moment, City cos of the cash investment, Man Utd cos of Fergie. The rest of the teams are going through a transition. Take a look at the competition…

Man City…stable side, stable manager, loads of money. Consistent top 4 side.
Man United…what will happen when Fergie retires ? A period of instability perhaps, but still consistent top 4 side.
Chelsea – in a period of transition, but loads of money, top young manager – consistent top 4 side.
Arsenal – Wenger hoying his toys out of the pram, within hitting distance of the toon.
Spurs – what happens when Harry Redknapp leaves for England, they’ll lose momentum and start to fall away – within hitting distance of the toon.
Liverpool – building up a head of steam, hoying loads of money around, but have a gash manager – within hitting distance of the toon.
Everton – what will happen when they sell the club ? Small stadium, no spending power, canny manager – within hitting distance of the toon.

Newcastle – stable manager, stable side, good young players coming through. Will stand and fall on next 2 years development with the club, new stadium sponsor / new joint owner ?? Could go both ways, stand or fall..

We could make top 5 – 6, it would be a tall order, but it’s not impossible with some sensible investment.

  35. @28 I get the “none of the Carroll money was spent” argument, but to say that not a penny was spent is just wrong…

Santon, Cabaye, Obertan… approx. £13m… balanced out somewhat by Nolan and Enrique… approx. £10m… so £3m spent…

Signing fees for free transfers.. Demba Ba and Marveaux.. speculation of course but I would hazard a guess at another £3m there, especially considering there was stiff competition for both… so that`s £6m say not including signing fees for other players….

If people are going to use the Carroll money as an argument then you also have to include Hatem Ben Arfa who was signed in January for £6m… that brings spending up to approx. £12m..

Add to that signing fees for all the players who received new 5 year contracts over the past year, again hard to know but all in all probably another £3m

Understand some wanted all £35m to be spent but it was never going to happen. Fair enough, if all of that Carroll money was specifically for transfers we should have roughly £20m left…

Would you liked to have seen it spent on people like Ruiz £12m? Gervinho £10m+? Be held to ransom over Erdinc? Spend £10m on Cissokho? £7.5m on Pieters when he`s in the final year of his contract? when we only got £6m for Enrique who is unquestionably a better player… see where i`m coming from?

We have spent money, just spent well.. and of course we were all annoyed to not see a striker signed, and maybe another defender (LB) but personally I would not have been too happy with spending that sort of money on any of the above mentioned..

Clearly we done some great business and we are a better side than last year even with the players we sold so tbh can`t complain at all about the transfer policy or dealings to date and certainly don`t agree that we didn`t spend a penny on players.

Would rather wait 6 months and get a bargain on the likes of Pieters, Erdinc or Maiga than pay too much for players that are no better than what we currently have. Spending for the sake of spending because we have it is what we used to do and look where that got us!

Of course if we sold Tiote for £20m we would replace him, but also safe to say we would spend about £5m on that replacement.. if we spent all £20 on replacing him what would be the point in selling him in the first place?

We’re obviously missing Tiote too.

Must admit, I wouldn’t be too arsed if we ‘replaced’ Ryan Taylor. Hopefully clueless Dalglish will offer us 15m for him or sumik, and we’ll re-invest it in Pieters or Ridgwell straight away.

    Guthrie playing p3 w2d0l1 s6c5 2.00ppg 2.00gpg 1.67cpg 0cs.

obviously we score more and conceed more ith Guthrie instead of Tiote but his stats don’t look bad given that that includes the City game. Interestingly Tiote has 2 assists whereas Guthrie still has to get one.

Can we live without Tiote, of course, we are doing. This is the area where everybody says we are overstocked with CM.

Having said all that I think he will stay if we continue our good form and would only move for CL football if we fail to qualify for the Europa Cup.

  39. I totally agree Zammy. Pardew just can’t win no matter what he does or says. I think he has worked out how to play Ashley in that he knows just how far he can go with the owner. He can’t promise anything but will constantly push (and he knows how to make a convincing argument) his boundaries knowing that with the increased success has come a greater willingness to accede to the manager’s wishes. This has not, and will not, be achieved overnight but the progress is obvious to everyone other than those so blinkered they don’t wish to see that the Pardew/Ashley relationship is anything other than bad for the club.

Some clubs like Man City , Man Utd e.t.c can hang on to certain players only because those players are wanting silverware and those clubs are better suited to that, so they stay, not to mention that other clubs couldn’t afford them.
Naturally our better players will be sounded out by the bigger clubs as will any clubs better players.
For us to keep pushing forward , we have to build up the coffers to make the club absolutely sustainable in itself and the faster track to that is by taking clubs eyes out when they come in for our players.

Tiote, £3.5 million would, in my mind, only be sold for 25 million plus a player deal or something on those lines.

If and I say If, he goes then it’s just another chapter in the life of a football club but he would be replaced by a player with similar pedigree, maybe even better.

No one can underestimate Graham Carr and what he can find and although Tiote is a major piece in our jigsaw at the minute, we haven’t really suffered for his absence ..

Danny Guthrie looks like a brand new player and as his confidence builds up.
Guthrie could prove to be a very important cog in this machine this season .
This club appears to be geared on young blood coming through the ranks to complement the seniors over time and once it’s fully in place where they have properly come of age, this will be our policy in a sort of Man Utd way with how they blooded their youngsters.

In my opinion no matter what happens, no matter who’s sold, this club will continue to go forwards and I believe everyone at the club is committed to that.
