No deal for Pieters in January

No deal for Pieters
Erik Pieters is a name that is fairly familiar to fans of Newcastle United after months and months of him being linked with a switch to St James’ Park.

In fact a deal was very nearly done in the summer although a disagreement between the NUFC and Pieters’ agent seemed to put the skids under any potential transfer and in the end nothing came of it.

It seemed nailed on that we’d be back for the Dutch international at some point as, being brunt, he is exactly the type of player we need, especially given our current defensive injury crisis. He can play at left-back and in the centre of defence which would kill two birds with one stone and address a fairly large weakness in our squad.

However it appears that PSV Eindhoven are not interested in selling the 23-year-old in the upcoming transfer window. PSC Sporting Director, Marcel Brands spoke to Goal.com exclusively and insisted that no players will be leaving the Philips Stadion in January.

“We are not looking to sell any players at all,” explained Brands. “We are in the race for the title. We are in second place with one game in the Eredivisie and one game in the Europa League to go.”

“We want to finish with wins then we have a short winter break. I don’t expect something to happen to our squad.”

Brands was then quizzed about the possibility of a revival of a deal with Newcastle regarding Pieters, to which he replied:

“No, because, first thing, we won’t sell in the winter and, second thing, he is injured. We think he will be fit again in February and we look forward to him playing again for us.”

I seriously can’t see Newcastle bidding to a level where PSV simply have to sell to be honest so I think this one is pretty much dead in the water, or seems to be anyway. It’s a shame really as getting him in would no doubt sit favourably with Tim Krul given the fact they are mates and all, plus, as said earlier on, he would go some way to solving our defensive lightness.

However there is an urgency with regards to our defender hunt. Put simply our need is now and I honestly don’t think we could take a punt on Pieters and wait until February for him to be fit again, and then perhaps March to be match fit again.

Needs must, and Pieters no longer fits our need.

  1. Billy- it’s wrong how inconsistent he is yes but I had a feeling it could be a game with space he could attack, the Norwich back 4 was doomed thats not a gd start for the boys up top that’s why swans at home maybe different IMO.

  2. Agree with the article Toonsy, I deffo think we don;t need to be taking gambles on his fitness in January.

We need “ready to go” players.

  3. Matty I get what you mean but I was thinking that the other matches, he looked good against stoke when we were up against it but at home we’ll need to be patient but I don’t expect it to be like stoke pressure so he has to have some sort of end product with swansea flooding midfield. Gutierrez gets a bit stick but he does so much for the team with his runs he gets throw ins or free kicks up the field and is mint defensively we need Obertan to learn from Gutierrez but he doesn’t do out differently at the minute.

With the defence pretty dodgy I think he will stick with him, he has to have a good game some time soon hope it’s Saturday we need some points. Like some people have said Swansea have half decent wingers, so a patient, defensive shift might need to be put in a bit more than normal the way Swansea keep possession. If Pardew starts with the 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation he did against Chelsea first half but Tioté or Abeid alongside Cabaye, Jonas instead of Lovenkrands obviously with Ben Arfa/Shola/Besty and Ba we should be alright how do you think pards will do it?

  4. I’d agree with that think we have the top flight edge experience over swansea plus there away record is terrible, they have some young, hungry, lively players but we’ve dealt with better, there’s to much at stake for us to lose, I’m not cocky am confident can’t see anything else than 6pts from next 2 games, TOON ARMY !!

  5. This article, and the forthcoming transfer window has got me thinking.

Are there any players we were linked with in the summer that we regret not actually signing??

I know it’s a bit of a difficult one because, how many rumoured targets were actually true, but I mean the likes of Pieters, Cisse, Gervinho, Ruiz and others that seemed genuine enough.
Certainly I don’t think we have missed anything with Gervinho or Ruiz, but who else were we linked with would have made it into our starting 11 do we think.

NUFC blogists.. If you’re reading this, feel free to elaborate should you want to.

  6. Gervinho looks good but not gutted we didn’t sign him, Ruiz is not adapting to well so that doesn’t bother me to much, pieters would of been useful but is injured so out of the names listed were okay I think.

  7. Yeah those were the ones I was thinking but wasn’t sure if I was missing anyone.

I know it was written that they wanted 14m for Cisse tho and it looks like were getting Maiga for about 7m I think, but Cisse looks strong and quick and I think the German league is stronger than the French so by my reckoning, that would make Cisse the better player but not sure he’s twice as good (as the fees would suggest)

  8. In theory but you can’t always judge of the league, Premier is tougher than the French league for instance but I think Drogba has a better strike rate here than over there(I think) read it somewhere but haven’t checked. That said I’d have preferred Cisse but maybe just because I know more about him than Maiga.

  9. Maiga younger than cisse, so cisse older bit more proven, but who’s to say maiga won’t be worth 14mill in a couple of years.

  10. I get what you mean Richie, I suppose it also depends on the quality of other players around you providing you crosses and assists, and the formation or the team you’re playing in, or whether the manager you’re playing for wants to play a style that suits you’re game, yeah I get what you mean.
Torres is another example I suppose, scores at Liverpool but different formation at Chelsea and not as effective but still playing in the same league, our has he just turned ****?!

  11. Sharpy….I think he just turned ****, he started to slide at the end of his Liverpool stint…..he’ll come good eventually……for someone.
