Are these two players the answer?

Could this Ajax man be the answer?
As the transfer window edges ever closer we are getting linked with so many players it’s hard to keep up with, but I’ve found two that I think would improve us no end.

Jan Vertonghen is the first name that caught my eye. The 24-year Belgium central defender is apparently looking to leave Ajax either next month or the summer and has been linked with Arsenal and Manchester City as well as ourselves in recent weeks.

He has been dubbed the new Thomas Vermaelen but is taller than his ex-Ajax team mate and has since been made Ajax captain so I’m sure you can guess your self it would take a fair sum to prize him away, £8-10 million apparently.

The next player that I’d like to see us go for is Nicky Maynard at Bristol City. After failing to agree a new contract he has been made available for transfer and with him being a free come the summer we could pick him up for about £2.5 million.

Now even though he has never played in the top flight I think he would do a great job for us with his pace and finishing. He would also complete an excellent forward line with the brilliant Demba Ba.

This season we have seen Danny Graham, Steve Morison, Grant Holt and Scott Sinclair score goals after moving up from the Championship but it is Shane Long who has arguably done the best, and Maynard is almost a carbon copy.

They both love to get in behind and make runs that the likes of Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye would thrive on. Like Long, Maynard is a great finisher and has a great record for a poor Bristol City team. He might not be the most glamorous option, like Long wasn’t in the summer, but he certainly has a lot of things we lack at the minute.

Now I know what your saying: ‘we won’t pay £8-10 million for Vertonghen’ but if we were prepared to pay £7 million for Maiga you would assume we were going to pay a couple of million for a defender so with Maynard being available for so little we wouldn’t be spending anymore than we were seemingly prepared to before.

What do you guys think?

  1. Just an off-topic. It would seems Alan shearer record stay intact as of now. 😆

Arsenal drew 1-1 with Wolves. 😯

Christmas present for most mid and bottom clubs. Top clubs fail to win. Chelsea,Man city,Arsenal. Only Man utd typical Christmas rush is back in action.

  2. I’d take a punt on Maynard. Good player imo. Pace, power, knows how to finish and like you say, plenty of players can make the step up. We have nearly a squad of those last season 😉

  3. If we shell out 8-10 mil for a CB he’ll no doubt be colo’s replacement – not being a misery just resigned to him moving on, probably in the summer. Stalled contract talks and all that. If we get someone of half his quality i’ll be happy.

  4. Must say I read the other day that Ajax were selling Jan Vertonghen and replacing him with Douglas Teixeira. So why don’t we just cut out the middleman and by Douglas. He would be the perfect foil for that bloke from montpellior whose name I’m not even going to attempt.

As for strikers If we are playing 4-4-1-1 with HBA then is Nicky Maynard what we need. Perhaps we should cash in on Ba before his knee gives out??

  5. Can’t see us spending enough to get Vertonghen but he looks class. As for Maynard, not so sure. As always we will leave it up to Carr to recommend the right player to us and then Llambias will screw up the negotiations no doubt. Hopefully I’m just joking about that. If Ashley actually wants someone (isn’t he supposed to have told Pardew to get a centre back in?) then we will get someone. Surely even a blind man could see that other than Ba we have no strikers of quality? After watching Best again yesterday I know we are in deep trouble unless we get someone to cover for him. Ben Arfa adds immediate impact to the team but needs someone to play off of while Ba is away.

  6. Agreed.

Has to be worth a shot with Maynard. We missed a trick slightly with Shane Long, although quiet a few of us thought he was worth a punt back in the Summer.

A fast, quick-witted forward would be a great addition.

Fingers crossed big time for at least a CB and a forward next month.

How nice it would be to see NUFC really show ambition for 2012 and just get that bit extra quality in to see us through to Europe in the near future. 😀

  7. Agree with you Archiemag, if we get a decent centre back in then Colo is gone in the summer. What a shame. I love to watch him control a game when he has a partner he can trust beside him. The whole key to our season will be how we deal with Ba and Tiote being away and whether or not we get any more serious injuries to our few really decent players.

  8. Verthongen would be immense, but I think even though we pay the money he costs, we will be very lucky to sign him considering the the competition from other BIG teams such as Inter Milan.

I would like us to bring Hedwiges Maduro/ Nedum Onohua and Jelle Vossen. Vossen is an up and coming forward (belgian international) similar in the type of Maynard/Long , and could turn out to be AWSOME! These two signings would provide quality and strengthen our squad without costing too much.

  9. GeordieDan – That’s the annoying thing. Wee aren’t actually far away from having a team capable of competing for Europe. In fact I’d argue that our first XI is already capable of it. Beyond thatis where we struggle though. Not too fussed about midfield but in defence and attack we have nothing really beyond our first choices which means that when we get an injury we feel it more than the “genuine” top six.

On Vertonghen. Really can’t see us spending £8-10m on any player. Tomkins is the more likely IMO. Plus he’d not need time to adjust to the English game like an overseas player might.

  10. Is it true ManU is going after Carroll so that they can have Shrek and the Donkey playing together? I have this horrible feeling the Donkey will be playing against us and possibly scoring. 😉

  11. What about trying to tempt Bristol with cash plus Leon Best? Maynard is a class act, he needs to step up the the prem IMO. Could be the perfect foil to Demba Ba. ❓

  12. I know many people think we are looking for a CB to replace Colo as people think he’s on his way out.
Is it conceivable though, that perhaps he is waiting to see who we sign and how ambitious the club want to be before deciding his future. i.e sign some decent players and I’ll sign, sign nowt and I’m off.

I’d take the Belgium lad at Centre Back, but Maynard?! I’ve just read Toonsys last posting slagging Best off for not being good enough and being a Chamionship player… and we want replace him with… A Chamionship player???

I wouldn’t argue that for £2.5m, Maynard would be a low cost gamble, but the opening question was “are these two players the answer?”….. NO!

I think Luuk De Jong, Giroud or even Hugo Rodellaga who I know we haven’t yet been linked with, but they are better player IMO.

Toon fans will expect a new striker to come in and start scoring straight away and I don’t think Maynard would. He’d be a good buy if we gave him time but he’s not the answer or he’d already be playing prem football with such a low fee

  13. Maynard yes please. Know nothing about the dutch man. the centre back will had to come from the continent and experience tells us the physicality of the premier league is always a shock to these lads and we don’t have time to bed them in they have to hit the ground running

      (Quote)

  14. DJG we could even throw in Perch along with Smith and Best plus some cash. Of course that might be enough to get Bristol relegated and then they would never do business with us again! 😆 Seriously though I see enough people mentioning Maynard to think he might be worth a shout. Just so long as we don’t have to spend any more time lumping the ball to Best. I thought those days were behind us. The first hour of the Bolton game was incredibly hard to watch. We looked as hopeless as Bolton did until Ben Arfa came on.

  15. [email protected] with you 100% on that got nee time to bed a defender in at this stage, on a striker dont know why but ive a feeling we will go to celtic for there striker would prefer someone with pace like 😐

      (Quote)

  16. Sharpy17 I wish you were right about Colo but the simple fact is that Ashley wants rid of the last highly paid players in the squad, even the excellent ones. Smith will be gone this summer and Colo won’t take a pay cut. Why should he? He has earned his money over the last 4 seasons unlike most of the other money grubbers we had on the team like Owen, Duff, Viduka (fat cow), and on and on.

  17. We need a quick and industrious striker who will put pressure on the opposing defence a la Bellamy 😉

      (Quote)

  18. So really he’s in no rush to extend it and he can enter negotiations in the summer.
Personally I think he’s well happy at the club and I can’t see him going anywhere before then.
He won’t be adored at any other club like he is at NUFC and he knows it, which to me will make him sign up.
Just my opinion of course but we will lose the odd player now and then, it’s part and parcel of football.

  19. Don’t forget, the world ends or starts to end on December 21st 2012, so there’s no point in contracts anyway. 😆

      (Quote)

  20. Toonsy no but are you telling me they are discussing Colo? Hopefully it’s a positive story about us? 🙂

      (Quote)

  21. I’d take Vossen before Maynard.

He’s good at converting poor crosses from the wide men and we can provide him with a good few of those .

Talking about wide men we should send Obertan to train with Heerenveen for a week or two so he can learn from Assaidi how to use his pace and skill to beat defenders and get some shots at goal.

      (Quote)

  22. I dont think we need to spend big on a central defender this january, a decent one between £3m-£5m would be ample. Willo is more than capable of holding the fort whilst Taylor is out. We just need a bit of decent depth should Colo or Willo miss games between now and the end of the season.

We really do need a striker though- although having looked at the stats in some detail (article on the way next couple of days) – Best is actually not as bad as I and a lot of us think…

      (Quote)

  23. **Still need an out and out goal getter though for when Ba is away, injured or banned…Best is ideal as support, but not as a leading man.

      (Quote)

  24. Shamrock – Best has a good goals per game record and is a very good support player.
I noticed alot of people jump all over Wolfie for suggesting that very thing on Toonsys last posting, so I would encourage more people to check Bests stats and form an orderly apology que for Mr Wolf.

Douglas and De Jong are the 2 players that would be our answer.. 15-20m should land them both.. job done.

      (Quote)

  25. Onohua from from Man C. They need to sell and get a few people of the books and I think we could get him for 5 to 6 mill if we were lucky..It also seems our old friend is not getting much game time.

Pat Van from Chelsea is currently warming the bench at Wigan. Not sure how long he is there for but it might be a season. If its only till Jan I’d try and get him on loan meaning we can move Rtayls back to the right side and have Santon playing first team and Van there for back up and to keep him sharp. Those two backs in January would be outstanding.

  28. Sharpy – I think you misunderstand me? I know Best’s stats are not bad and as underlined earlier, I said he stands up against most. However, his recent form has been poor and if it continues then he should be dropped. I’m not getting in any queue to apologise mate. I stand by what I have said and I know the stats.

      (Quote)

  29. I wasn’t referring to you, I was referring to the other who suggest that Best was shit full stop and jumped all over comments that suggested he’s form has been poor in recent games but he isn’t as bad as people were suggesting

      (Quote)

  30. Ah not to worry dude 🙂 Just finished an article on the subject. He easily stands up in the Premiership against most and is what I would describe as average. Not bad going considering he was at Coventry a couple of years ago… Definately worth keeping for a while 😀
