Haris Vuckic is handed a start and will play just behind lone striker Demba Ba which may come as a surprise to some who expected to see Hatem Ben Arfa start the match after an impressive scoring cameo against Bolton at the weekend. Other than that, Newcastle are unchanged. Ryan Taylor retains his place and even though Davide Santon is fit to return he must make do with a space on the bench.
For Liverpool it’s an ex-Newcastle forward line as Craig Bellamy is paired with Andy Carroll in the absence of Luis Suarez who sits out the match courtesy of a one game suspension for his contemptuous hand gesture at Craven Cottage a few weeks back. Steven Gerrard takes a place on the bench while another former Mag, Jose Enrique, starts.

Surprised to see Haris starting but not surprised to see Benny on the bench. The clues were there about “nearly being 100%” so I’m surprised by that. Mind I thought it would be Best and Ba.
Think Haris will give us much more presence up front anyway due to his size. Plus he has Tiote and Cabaye behind unlike West Brom so has a license to go forward and unleash a few shots on goal

Toonsy ,as Pardew said in pre match, he liked the way Vuckic played against West Brom and he said he hasn’t had much game time but looked good and he feels he’s worth a chance.
I think he’s playing it clever with Ben Arfa ,easing him into it which I agree with cos I think he can be a massive game changer should we need it in the final 30 mins of a game.
With the injury he had it’s a better bet doing it like this, in my opinion.

we`ve been poor but Liverpool haven’t exactly been making Krul pull out all the stops, only started playing after they scored and it was a poor goal to give away.. the pool set up very well tactically though, letting tiote having the ball and marking cabaye, vuckic and ba out of the game, none of them are getting a sniff.. tiote playing decent but pulling out a fabregas standard through ball just isn’t his thing.. hate to jump on the HBA bandwagon at half time but think he could take the ball off tiote and hurt them more than vuckic, need to pull one of those CB away from Ba because he`s being comfortably double marked at the mo.. looked like Raylor took a knock too, Santon probably safe bet to come on given Raylors booked as well… still hopeful we can get something out of the game but it will be a grind

fair opinion although liverpool while may not be the liverpool of old are certainly a better team than us in quality and depth- fact is the can and have beaten the top teams unlike us who are lucky to snatch a draw.
I cant knock pardew for playing a 4-4-1-1 at anfield. I’m happy he’s given Vuckic a chance despite him playing poorly, and I cant blame him for picking Jonas who to me is having a very bad game. We are a top 10 team sitting in 7th liverpool are still a top 6 team and playing like one

Ash – It can work, but it needs to be done differently and not conventionally. Not many wingers get much change out of Liverpool so Jonas and Obertan were pissing against the win from the start. The problem then lays in the middle, but we only had Tiote and Cabaye up against Spearing, Adam and Henderson so we were outnumbered in the middle and out-thought on the flanks.
Effectively we have no middle then which a lot of people said. So then we have to resort to long balls up front. The problem is that the link man, Vuckic then Ben Arfa, are never close enough to get onto anything that comes off Ba.

Simmo had a great first half, and a dreadful 15 minutes in the second half, a couple of his actions which cost us the game. Granted Tiote passed him a difficult ball, but he’s a footballer ffs and should be able to find a way out of it…

Vuckic touched 5 balls in the first half. Look to other teams which played with a guy in the hole, their number 10 receives all the ball.

Well I thought it was nice of the lads to donate a rare home win to the scousers. Did I see right – after their last goal it looked like we were happy just to get on the bus and go home. I think we made them look good tonight, Tiote’s passing was bizarre, and I think that Al’s tactics were not great at all. Shouldn’t have started with Raylor, brought HBA on too late & changed nothing around when we were definitely being overran. I’m afraid Obertan is starting to wear out his welcome with me now (and I have been on his side), they had the measure of him and most of his touches looked panicky. Felt sorry for Vuckic too, looked out of his depth tonight.
if we buy a left back at january window we can put Santon in the right and our new transfer in the left so we will be better. But i think our main problems come from our wingers. Because no team has strikers who can eliminates 3 opponent and score a goal each game, every team has his most dangerous players in the wing, except us. So if Ba is beaten in the air we have no chance to score like tonight because Ba has no chance against Agger in the duel in the air.

- If he goes forward we need someone in close proximity just incase he is pressured and needs a short pass.
- He needs to receive the ball when not under any pressure.
- He needs a winger to help him defend all the time as he backs off far too much.

I think its fair to say we beat ourselves tonight. Never seen us play so lethargically. So negatively from the ko. As soon as L’pool upped the tempo it was game over. We seemed to panic and just kept giving the ball back to them
I think its obvious we cant play 4-4-1-1. We just end up hoofing the long ball all the time in hope.
Got to go back to 4-4-2. imo and do what we are good at.

I just say the type of players we need. I really think Marveaux can be good, because I have seen a lot of his games at Rennes and he has talent. In my opininon Benny can play in the wing, maybe he will defend less (even if i think than Obertan defensive work is very poor) but at least when he will receive the ball in a good position he will be dangerous.
I don’t know if someone can find the sats of the passes we made tonight but in my opinion 60 or 70% of our passes was back, so its impossible to be dangerous like that. The back passes is the easises pass to make you don’t take risk but our wingers our even our number need to take this risk. he need to say ok maybe i will loose the ball but i take the risk to control the ball and try eliminate..Benny does that all the time

Even when he wasn’t playing and was just a sub it didn’t matter, he was there breathing down the neck of Jonas and Obertan. Jonas especially responded to that and was playing really well. Lose the competition and Jonas gets pants. Same when Benny was about last season, Jonas played well for a few games then when Benny got injured he played shite as he had no competition

really tonight it was one of the poorest game of Liverpool (because i watch almost all games of Liverpool this season, 2 of my friends are big fan), and we was not able to take profit of that and beat them or get a draw. Exactly! Thing is, Jonas has been hiding behind the ‘protects fullbacks’ tag for so long, but when Santon came on I don’t think he needed to cover as much. He does so to make up for his piss poor contribution going the other way.
Obertan has begun protecting Simpson more, probably because he gets such unwarranted slack from the fans and he is just trying to at least show he is working hard. Feel really sorry for him. He played some good stuff today, but was never going to get the better of Enrique.

Speaking of Obertan, if you want to see just what the fans are doing for the lads confidence, check his reaction/celebration for Ben Arfa’s goal against Bolton. He almost looks scared to celebrate with the fans. Disgraceful.
The combination of Bellamy and then Gerrard for 18 minutes at the end did us in. Gerrard just took the game over. They could have ended up with 4 or 5 if Carroll had even a little technical ability. It wasn’t good to watch and exposed a lot of our weaknesses. Our wingers both had poor games and really other than Ba’s attempt we had no attack at all. They had 7 corners to our 0 as well which also points out the weaknesses of our wingers again. Overall quite worrisome. With Ba gone we will really struggle to score goals. I thought Tiote had an off and on game as well. Ben Arfa had little impact. Why did we not start 4-4-1-1 with Ben Arfa just off Ba’s shoulder? Surely Ben Arfa is not still struggling for match fitness?
This game in particular exposes how far we are from being a top 6 team. It doesn’t worry me to lose to a slightly better side but we played so poorly for most of the game. Several weaker sides than us have gone there and taken away a point! That’s what bothers me most. And the fact that they dominated us so easily! It’s up to Pardew to have a plan going forward especially with Ba away. This is what I feared most. Lose our only real striker for a month with no plan in place to deal with it. Agree with BB @409 and El Toro @412 and 415. What do supporters think they accomplishing attacking our own players on Twitter?

If you think Tiote was the best player on the pitch, then there is no hope for you. He was utter garbage, more spins and circles than Parker and always a negative backpass if possible. He played us into more than enough trouble.
I cant see any other club coming in for him based on that performance. But it wasn’t just him, it was all of them.
Again have to agree with BB @419, What was Pardew thinking starting Vuckic in this game? We should have started with Ben Arfa beside or slightly behind Ba or with Ba and Shola up front. The attacking wing play was nonexistent. Even with 5 in the midfield we were stripped of the ball constantly. Again very strange tactics from Pardew. He must have almost no faith in Ben Arfa. Jonas is about as far off his game as I have seen him at Newcastle. Both our fullbacks were exposed again defensively as being too weak. The thin squad will be more and more exposed in the second half leading to many unnecessarily droppped points. Pardew will need to take a strong hand now and really lift the lads spirits before Man U.
I don’t think I or many others expected a win, but to throw away a lead in the manner in which we did was disappointing. To be fair one of the goals was very soft and the other was just stupid to give away.
Some of the performances were good, Tiote, Cabaye, Demba and Vuckic couldn’t do too much, Santon and Colo were good.
