Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle – Match highlights and post-match interviews

Match highlights of the rather disappointing 3-1 defeat at Anfield last night. I say disappointing although I never really expected anything from the match. However there is no excuse for some of our players coming up so short performance wise.

Going to Anfield is always a tough ask. People will point towards the amount of pints they’ve dropped at home as some for of justification that we should have done better but the reality is that most teams who have earned points at Anfield have been lucky to do so. Mind you it’s not excuse for our boys just not turning up on the night.

Meanwhile Alan Pardew was left frustrated at the manner of the second goal and feels it was the turning point in the game.

Kenny Dalglish was left pleased with his sides effort and commitment as his side move into fifth in the Premier League table.

The most annoying thing for me though is that we could and should have played better. Too many players weren’t at the races and our usual work ethic and commitment wasn’t there. It’s the worst I’ve seen us play all season in truth. Not a great way to end 2011.

And with Manchester United next it’s not a great way to start 2012 either!

  1. disappointed with Pardews efforts in this game. With 20 minutes to go we had no plan B – we played as if it was a damage limitation exercise.

Not good enough in my eyes.

santon needs to play from the start – he’s a proper defender. we would have fared better if Shola had played instead of Vuckic.

there you go – i’ve just started the Shola debate again.

  2. The chuckle brothers to me to you impersonation on the line was the turning point, It wasnt a free kick in the first place but pityful way to concede.

The sad thing is they genuinely didnt look a great side but neither were norwich, west brom or swansea but we havent got the strength in depth to cover the likes of Taylor now and Colo, Tiote and Jonas in previous weeks, Any other club sitting in what will more than likely be a european spot come the end of the season would have bombed Obertan weeks back but not us he will play rain or shine regardless of form and fitness due to Marveauxs injury and our lack of experienced options out wide.

If blackburn are having to sell we should be front of the queue for Samba and Hoillet but i wouldnt hold me breath… 🙄

I think that about sums it up perfectly.

Hopefully we will see a better performance at home on wednesday.

  4. I see Manure are keeping Rooney back for the visit to us on wednesday.
They think they can beat blackbum just with Berbatov.
In some ways I’ll take that as a compliment. Bastads. 👿

  5. We need to keep the faith, the wheels have come off the carriage, and we are on the ropes at the moment, rolling with the punches. Sadly this could go on for another few weeks, after all we will be losing our talismen Tiote and Ba soon. Anyone who has played football knows that you tend to look to your best players for that bit of spark to give you the belief that you can get something out of the game. We are lacking natural leaders unfortunately, we have too many midfielders who hide behind there own shadows at the moment.

Still, confidence is the key. This is pretty much still the same team who were grounding out results at the start of the season, and also playing quite good compact football. We can only work hard until we turn the corner…

We don’t need to go all doom and gloom radgie if we should lose to Man Utd. However, the way we go about things is more important. If it’s one thing the toon fans don’t like is lack of effort. oH OH:::i WAS JUST GONNA COMMENT THAT AT LEAST we won’t get embarassed in front of the whole nation, but we ARE live on Sky…. 🙁

Thank goodness we have the points on the board from early season.

  7. It wasnt all bad last night. A cpl of mistakes cost us dearly but I hope we learn that quality is needed if we want to stay near the top.

We’ll see in Jan where MA’s ambitions lie.

For me, L’pool are there-a-bouts with us but have Carroll, Kuyt, Bellamy, Suarez, Maxi & Aquilani as their forward threats.

We have Ba, the rest are first division fodder with the exception of Barfa (but what’s his best position)

We desperately need a decent left-back so Santon can drop into Simpsons position and a covering centerhalf, if we keep Colo.

But more importantly is a striker. We were told several times about the importance of a striker in Jan if we wanted to keep up with the Jones and we were assured our scouts had watched a number of players, so I hope this rumour of no-striker is bullshit or we’ll find ourselves suddenly dropping out of the top 10.

    anyway, downer over 🙂

AL the best for New Yr

  8. Wish we could have picked up Bellamy over the summer, so bloody annoying 😕

Some decent performances yesterday and quite a few poor ones. To be honest I do think we miss Joey a bit, perhaps not so much in ability but certainly in terms of attitude on the pitch. Colo just doesn’t get angry enough for me

  9. @Newkie

For all i was pleased we let Barton leave. I agree, a midfield of jonas, Cabaye, Tiote and Barton instead of Obertan would of made us much stronger.

  10. we’ll not pick players like Bellers as their wages are too high, same reason we let Barton go.

Sometimes that extra quality is worth paying for. We’ll probably lose Colo for the same reasons
