So, here we are, halfway through the 2011-12 campaign and sitting pretty in 7th – our best position in the top flight at this stage of the season since 2003/04.

A season that started off like a drug-infused olympic sprinter has fizzled out of late with just 5 points gained from the last 24 available. Flat and uninspired performances against Norwich, Swansea, West Brom and Liverpool have highlighted weakness in the Newcastle ranks but what has been identified more than anything, is the importance of our bargain-bought Senegalese talisman, Demba Ba.

With 14 Premier League goals to his name, Ba has been a revelation in the black and white shirt this season for NUFC, showing the kind of form and desire that a Newcastle United No. 9 possesses! It is blatant to any football follower, that for Newcastle to do well in games, they have to utilise Ba as best they can – the Liverpool game being a prime example where Ba was left isolated and therefore contributing somewhat of a subdued performance. As good as he has been at creating things out of nothing, he MUST be given the appropriate support and service if he is to continue in his current form.

However, more worrying than the performance of our other attacking players and the service/support Demba has(n’t) been receiving, is the fact that very soon NUFC will lose their prized asset to the African Cup of Nations and with AP recently stating that no forward shall be bought to replace Ba and add to the attacking line, it really does leave one wondering ‘who on Earth is going to fill his shoes?

Leon Best? 3 goals in 12 PL starts? Ben Arfa? Still finding his feet and not a favourite of AP’s at the moment it would seem! What about Haris Vuckic? Hardly set the world alight on Friday at Anfield and not experienced enough to score a significant amount in the PL as yet. Ameobi? Lovenkrands? Ranger? Most fans know how those stories go! With the players currently on the Barcodes’ books, it’s most likely that a collection of players are going to have to find form to replace the work Demba Ba has been doing for NUFC, and on observation of his stats, thats a MAMMOTH task!

NUFC_Stats looked at Demba’s numbers and compared them with the other ‘on-fire’ forwards currently in the best league in the world!

The numbers paint a pretty black & white picture of Demba Ba – he just scores goals!! While his all round play is not up to scratch with the top forwards in the Premier League, Ba is as good as any when it comes to putting the ball in the net. He has proven, and the numbers show, that when the ball is with Ba, he produces!

Good luck in the ACN Demba, but more importantly, good luck to the players that are given the responsibility of filling his boots at Newcastle!

  1. good article Batty πŸ˜‰

Ipswich Town have been credited with a move for Alan Smith, 😯 I doubt he’ll move on his wages.

Can’t really blame him but this is the problem when footballers get so much money it becomes more important than actually playing first team football every week

  2. We won’t miss Tiote too much because there are others who could fill his boots. However, I can only see us struggling even further without Ba. I cannot see any signings of note this window – if anything, only departures. In answer to Troy, I am predicting a top half finish – but only just. I am, however, optimistic that, slowly, slowly, we will be in a better, improved place this time next year.

  3. man u and then the ACON… i predict a big slide down the table over the coming weeks and we’ll be lucky if we’re still in the top half! πŸ‘Ώ

How the hell did the filth beat man city the other day? I can only say that bringing in Martin O’neill was a stroke of genius, they look a better team with him.

  4. Nobby – Not sure about a big slide but having your main goal threat taken away is going to harm any team…even more so for us as we don’t seem to have a natural goal scorer to replace him with.

Regarding the mackems – I was distraught when I heard, I honestly thought they were going to get completely thumped. Perfect opportunity for Man City to extend their league position over Man Utd and they failed miserably. I never seen the goal but heard it was offside. They are on a honeymoon period at the minute like any other team would be, he is probably just what they need. They are still a shit team.

  5. Easy up peoples!

Would anyone be happy to see us go for Maynard or Rhodes? Cut price and hungry but with the pace to provide the foil to Ba?

Also, would anyone be bothered with Bridge? He was brilliant at Southampton and early doors at Chelski but maybe a run in a team would see him come good again? Not a long term option by any stretch and I would much rather us go for a perm LB, in addition to Samba and either Maynard/Rhodes would be a great window.

I also agree with others that Best and HBA should be the front pairing while Ba is away if we dont bring anyone else in, but I also am a little worried with the CM area if Cabaye gets an injury. Gosling just hasnt looked anywhere like a player, and Vuckic and Abeid are raw but show real promise. Perhaps if they were given a run they would prove to be good players. Hartlepool have done the same with a couple of young lads who are showing the old timers up so it can work for us.

Do we think MAnure will have Carrick at CB tomorrow? Would fancy big Ba over him all day long, and De Gea in goal is worth a goal at least. I worry for Raylor against Nani/Valencia. I hope Santoon plays for his pace as Raylor will end up in the book early doors and will be in their pocket. It also depends on how well we can marshall Chico and Rooney. I hope we take the game to them and push our plans forward. Blackburn did and won and we can give them a good game at SJP

Toonsy putting up a new article so people don’t see my pun. dick.

I saw it on twitter and it made me laugh! Keep them coming!

  7. Raffo – We gave them a game at Old Trafford and got a great but possibly lucky point. I have faith that if the team play to their potential we can get a result on Wednesday night. If Blackburn can surely we can.

If the same team that played Liverpool turn up then we are screwed.

  8. Oh while we are on about Demba, is anyone else convinced that if he was in a better team he’d be leading Premier League scorer with about 20 goals by now? I think he has been awesome.

  9. Jobey – I looked up your pun on the previous story. Cracker. πŸ˜†

Ba is a big miss, and we can only hope that one of the others steps up a gear, as has happened the last couple of times. Best did it before; let’s hope he can again. I’m not confident, though!

Fortunately, other teams are having weird results, with lots of draws at the moment. We’re still 6 points clear of 10th.

No idea what to expect tomorrow; hopefully Pards has had a chance to get his head around the situation and issue the apporpriate rocket. To avoid defeat to Manure twice in a season would be brilliant for me, but it will take a poor performance from them and a good one from us. We may be short on wingers, but otherwise looking ok, so here’s hoping.

  10. @himan

Somehow I dont think DL and MA would have him back after the slagging match they had on transfer day.

Hope I’m wrong but maybe he’s damaged good, he’s flopped that badly not sure what his value will be or whether he’d fit into our style of play now. Saying that, we still play a few long balls.

  11. damaged goods..

tbh I still like Carroll but I’d prefer a bellamy-type player rather than another target man..

  12. What would people feel like if we had no transfer activity at all… no one in… but crucially… no one out.

I think I’d still be a bit disheartened as we deperately need some centre half back up.

If we brought in a CH and no one left I’d see this as a successfull window.

Who is favourite to go though?

I really can’t see it happening. Only Man U actually need a defensive midfielder but I can’t see them shelling out a large amount at the moment.

As stated he’d only go for ‘silly money’ but who in their right mind would pay over the odds for a player whos knee could go at anytime? I know his stats are sublime but he’s too much of a risk to go for a shedload.

I think he’s settled at Newcastle and this is the right time to sell him if they were going to sell him as in 1-2 seasons time he could be seen as too old but it looks as though they want to keep him as they’ve offered a new contract, granted he hasn’t accepted it (yet) but why offer a new contract to someone you don’t want?

I’ll put it out there and say – I think this lad is staying at the toon for a long long time. Keepers play better when settled and we’re famed for keeping keepers for a long time. This lad will have the most of his playing career with us. Not my words but Peter Beardsley came out with that at a charity sportsmans dinner I was at a year ago.

I’d put Tiote as favourite then but like I said I really can’t see it happening.

I think nothing will happen this window, maybe we might bring a youngster in but that’s about it.

  13. Nobby-The transfer window is all relative. As much as I’d like to say i’d be happy with no movement, if willo and colo both got injured long term on feb 1st we’d be up shit creek and probably still with a chance of relegation πŸ˜•

Chances are if we lose anyone they’ll be better than who we bring in, so i guess no moves is good moves? wahey πŸ˜•

  14. I wouldn’t think twice about taking Carroll back.
I think the guy made a big mistake, and soon realised that it was a mistake, but I think Nolan has to take as much of the blame.
I don’t think he would be asmuch if a problem with Nolan not being here.

  15. It’s interesting that we rocketed from 0 to 10 and 10 to 20 points and then 20 to 30 was a bit of a struggle. I predict that 30 to 40 will take till March. Our luck has turned. Blackburn have just started to play for their manager and we face them twice in a month. Man U just lost at Old Trafford to them and theres no-way they will lose two in a row!

  16. Is it just me or does Pardew say its going to take a massive offer for one of our players to leave nearly every time he does a press confrence? Starting to annoy me…

  17. Big Dave

I think Carroll would have struggled to make as big an impact in the second season if he had stayed here as well. I don’t think it’s just because he went to Liverpool. People were expecting too much from him IMO, he’d only had a season in the championship and half a decent season in the prem remember, thats not much really to be paying that sort of money.

  18. β€œ@lee_ryder: AP:”We’re keeping cards close to our chest in the window, it’ll be difficult for anybody going out and agreeing a price with my board #nufc”

β€œ@lee_ryder: AP: “I apologise to the media now we won’t be saying much in the window about the window” #nufc”

  19. What’s people’s team for tomorrow then?

    For me it would be:-

    Simpson – Willo – Collo – Santoon
    Jonas – Tiote – Cabaye – Arfa
    Ba – Best

I think that Cabaye is creative enough to play nicely alongside Arfa more so than Tiote so could create problems for them down the left hand side. Santoon has looked good at left back and wouldn’t need as much cover like Raylor so Cabaye will be more than enough. Having Jonas in front of Simpson on his natural right side could be good for us, his crossing should improve and will provide good cover for Simmo along with potential link up play down the flank. That leaves Tiote who can also help with Simmo when under the kosh but covering the back for and breaking Rooney in half πŸ˜‰

We could then be counter attacking with a front 3 of Ba, Best and Arfa 😯

  20. Anybody else think the ‘we won’t be signing a striker’ thing might just be a dirty great lie to keep cards close to the chest and prices down? Then we announce some french dude that no-one has heard of and he scores 10 goals. Have to hope!

  21. —————-krul—————–

  22. DJG

Blackburn were beaten at home just the other day. I think Man U like us struggled when they lost their two main centrehalfs. Most teams would.

I see we’re linked with every young prospect there is at the mo.. all guess-work from the press i suspect

  23. Mark

2 decent centr halfs make or break a team… look at us with sayor AND colo… now look at us with neither or only one. (we’re now poo)

Willo will start to read the game better with colo after a few games and i think we’ll have a decent 2 again.

I fancy fuck all tomorrow night. we haven’t had a home win since everton… and i’m getting used to sitting freezing in sjp… frustrated as fook.

  24. I saw that myself hitman , not sure how to take it to be honest , its very vague and you could either think people are going or people are coming in. I was hoping for a quiet transfer window , 1 in 1 out kinda thing. But could be one big transfer in or one big transfer out!

  25. @nobby

If Colo signed a new contract I’d be happy with a new potential centerhalf to replace Kadar + put pressure on Willo.

Youre never too old for thermal vests and long johns m8 at stJames πŸ˜†

  26. Mark – Bollocks πŸ™

I laughed at the headline ‘Obertan boost for Magpies’ haha, boost???

I’d be amazed if he is the difference between us getting something out of them tomorrow.

I predict that the Wolves game at home on the 25th Feb will be when we hit the 40 point mark.

  27. Oh and even though he isn’t injured now I would like to see him dropped and Arfa given a chance on the wing because other then Bolton he has done nowt of note recently. Arfa needs a chance to show his worth as well not using a 20 min cameo.

  28. Man U know all about the powers of Obertan so they’ll probably just play with 3 forwards and not have any1 marking him πŸ˜†
