Breaking News: Toon in talks with Papiss Demba Cisse

In talks with Newcastle?
Newcastle are said to be in talks with Freiburg striker Papiss Demba Cisse according to Sky Sports News.

We were linked with the Senegal striker back in the summer and the striker even went on record to acknowledge our interest although unfortunately nothing come of it and Cisse remained at Freiburg.

So imagine my shock when I got in from work and turned Sky on to see this little chestnut rolling along the little yellow ‘breaking news’ ticker. I nearly spat my coffee out! However, with seconds seconds I was back in my defensive ‘wait and see’ mode, so that’s just what I’ll do.

Cisse has an outstanding goal record in the Bundesliga having scored 37 goals in 65 appearances which has alerted some of the bigger clubs in Europe. He is mates with Demba Ba and is also an international team-mate of his so perhaps our current goal machine has had a word in the ear of another goal machine?

More to follow. Maybe…

  1. I’m obviously one of those “Fans should own the club” people and I still am. But credit where it’s due: This could be a brilliant signing.

I especially like the way they publicly said “no striker for us this year” and then went out and got one. They’re clearly trying to put people off their trail in the market. Good stuff.

  2. Just watched the interview on nufctv and he said that last night at 11pm he got the flight over very short notice by the sounds of it, seems keen to play for us and let the fans know that he wants to prove he is worth the money

once again i love mike ashley

  3. Toonpipes,

Keegan said that about the summer – he was right, we spent nothing as we made any money spent back in sales. The money spent on Cisse now can be seen as money from the new sponsorship and the season ticket deal a few months ago.

Christ, Ashley may have won a poker game or just been drunk today for all we know. Either way, Keegan was right about his comment on the SUMMER transfer window.

or the advertising money or the re-naming money 😉

  5. That 4-3-3 formation we played a bit on Sunday would certainly look tasty about now…

    Ba-Cisse-Ben Arfa
    Cabaye-Tiote-Jonas
    Santon-Collo-Willo-Simpson
    Krul

    😯

  7. Newcastle boss Alan Pardew admitted: “Ever since Andy Carroll left, Papiss was my first choice in the specific role he has at the end of the play.

“He is a finisher with an already-established CV in the Bundesliga, where we have monitored him for the best part of two years.

“Unfortunately he was out of reach, financially, for us in the summer, but it recently became apparent that Derek Llambias and Lee Charnley could do the deal in this window.

“It has become obvious this season that the team and the club have done exceptionally well, and Mike Ashley has backed me to bring this player to the club.

“I would like to thank Mike, Derek and everyone involved for getting this deal over the line.

“I spoke to Demba about Papiss, and he cannot wait to join up with his team-mate in Newcastle.

“In the short-term, of course, he is at the Africa Cup of Nations, but the competition he will bring to our squad when he joins up with us should inspire the players and reassure them of this club’s ambition.

“Our fans know that this shirt brings its own pressures. One of the iconic numbers in world football – the number nine of Newcastle.

“It will be only fair that Papiss is given time to understand the responsibility it brings.

“As the manager, I wish him all the luck in the world to bring success to himself and this club.”

Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias added: “We are very pleased to bring Papiss to the club.

“It is a signing which perfectly complements the type of side Alan is building, and we are sure he will prove to be an excellent acquisition going forward.

“He has travelled a long way to come and sign with us today, and we thank the Senegalese Football Federation for their assistance in helping us secure the player.”

  8. Dave, ok .. then thas cool .. point is that Shep and SJH in it together + Keith thinks they were the dogs b ollocks, and we did have good years, but they both responsible for taking a lot of cash out of the club and they chose to sell to MA .. so mebs Keith shud tone down his love for Shep and SJH and beef up his support for the current regime .. any case, im buzzin and cannit get to kip

  10. MDS that line up looks pretty tasty .. imagine if we got cissokho or samba .. im just wondering if the reason the cissokjo deal went quiet was not becos we dont want him or arent goin to sign him but because we had to sort this transfer out .. mebs weve got some more buzzy news to come

      (Quote)

  11. Beardsley – do you know if the lads will be back from the african cup nations for the snland game?

  12. FJ i imagine the sponsorship deal is an extension of the NR one seeing as they were bought out, and if there’s any increase it’ll be after this season. They’ve said before that part of what screwed the finances up in the first place was getting all sponsorship money upfront and investing it in players, so i can’t see mike doing the extact same thing himself.
And you really think that season ticket deal raised 9-9.5m (assumin €12m is right).

I know they’re just examples you’re giving and there’s plenty more places it could’ve come from too I’m sure, but at the end of the day it’s investment that we didn’t know would be forthcoming, and fair play to them for that. There could be a sting in the tail of course but deal with that when it comes. Keegan didn’t make the comment just referring to the summer, he meant it absolutely, regardless of time. He just made the comments soon after the sale. Anyway.

Big Dave – you seem to be getting it in the ear a bit today like, always found you pretty balanced myself but maybe that’s not allowed 😕

  13. pipes- Clearly I know nothing. And this signing has blown me away.
    ****** love NUFC.

  14. Dub…exactly said that a while back, the Virgin deal now is carrying on the NR one then the new 2 yr deal comes in for next season, and the club said years ago they wouldn’t spend revenue in advance.

  15. Point about Keegan is that it was his perceived mistreatment that really upset everyone .. and i have never blvd was as one sided .. i think he chucked a hissy fit when he was told he had to work within the financial constraints we all aware of and him saying we wud never see the money is typical of such a hissy fit ………… i think MA got too much bad press that was undeserved

      (Quote)

  16. TP…true, but on the plus side, we could have had both of them back for Spurs and still lost as it’ll be a toughie, I’d rather have them back for the more winnable ones(on paper)…….of course Senegal could get knocked out early doors, then they’d be back sooner 😀

  17. I dont think we should go over the keegan gate **** again pipes.
    Just let it rest now.

      (Quote)

  18. RICHIE, I’d rather senegal win it and then they come back **** a hoop, plus they have some rest when they do get back which means they will be fresh and raring to go. 😀

      (Quote)

  19. Wolfie, ive had serious battles on here and Ed’s site about that .. but it really p isses me off that whole situation – he took us to court for loads of money just because he cudnt get his head around the fact that he cudnt buy Lampard etc etc

      (Quote)

  20. Richie, so cud they be back for Spurs then? .. i thought mebs the group stages were goin on until then .. ??

      (Quote)

  21. Leon Best will be working his bell end off to bag some goals while they’re away, knowing that he has some serious strikers to emulate.
The fact that we’ve signed him will automatically give the players a lift, plus when we get the centre back in, it will just be jizzing on the dance floor from then on. 😀

      (Quote)

  22. Can you imagine the atmosphere when we start with cisse + ba upfront and cabaye and tiote and hba ..holy *****!!!

      (Quote)

  23. Wolfie….Sooner they’re back the better for me, they’d play more games over there too so they wouldn’t really be rested, and I’d be gutted if they were away the whole time and we missed out on finishing above Liverpool by a point 😀

      (Quote)

  24. Toonpipes@556,I know mate and it done my nut in as well but luckily he is a chapter that will not be repeated and he didn’t get his own way so I’m thankful for that and it’s all coming right for us now. 😀

      (Quote)

  25. RICHIE, we will blow Liverpool away and they will be a distant memory in 6 weeks time when we have a 10 point lead over them. 😆

      (Quote)

  26. good point wolfie. I hope Best keeps banging them in as I think Demba 2 will need time to settle in in Newcastle etc.
Do we know if he is married or anything? does he have a family to bring over from Germany?
We need Besty on top form until he is ready, make it difficult for the manager and stay injury free.

  27. Thing with Bestie though is it could easily backfire….I mean, he quite clearly felt the pressure playing alongside Ba to get some goals himself even though he was doing well enough. What will he be like now I wonder? 😕

  28. Cisse, who had nine goals for Freiburg so far this season, spoke to Newcastle’s official website about his move: “I would like to thank everybody for their welcome, and for inviting me to sign for the club. It is an honour to play for such a big club and I am looking forward to it.
“I want to pay back the confidence the Club have shown in me, and give the supporters something to be proud of.
“I am aware of the huge importance of the number nine shirt, and when I spoke with the manager he made it very clear how important this shirt is.
“I will treat it with the respect and I hope to do my very best in this shirt.”

  30. Their last group game would be 29th Jan so they could be back for Blackburn away if they didn’t progress(unlikely)
1/4 final 4th Feb Villa is the day after that so would be more likely back for Spurs if they got knocked out then
Semi Final 8th could be back for Spurs on the 11th
    Final 12th Wolves

  31. Cheers Richie .. lets see .. i think that we still have enough buzz but when you think of tiote and ba and cisse to come in – will be another level up when they do …. reet gon kip catch yous tomoz …. mebs cissokoho will be wrapped up .. i put it at 68% chance

  32. Papiss Cisse has told the club that his wife Ainya convinced him his move to England should go ahead and was more than happy with his choice of club, Newcastle.
She said through a translator ” of course it was his choice to make but I feel it would benefit us all with a new lifestyle and our daughter Boushina is only 3 so will make adapting quite easy”
She also said of their 2 German Shepherds, Kula and Lashli, that their quarantine will be a strain but it’s a small price to pay and will soon have them by her side.

  37. Just thought I’d add my twopennorth in the Ashley Satan/saviour debate.

If, and it’s a big if, the window closes and noone important leaves, then you’d have to agree that everything that MA has done has been for the good of the club. The key to being a successful businessman or a successful gambler is timing. When to buy. When to sell. When to call. When to fold. Ashley has played his cards close to his chest throughout his tenure and we’ve all bleated and moaned at his lack of activity and then KAPOW!!! All this time he was waiting for the right hand to play.

I dunno. Maybe he does know what he’s doing after all. Maybe we should back off and let him get on with it.

    Just a thought.

RICHIE, I think Samba would be a great addition and we will have him tomorrow at noon. 😀

  40. well Richie, I cant see us going for Samba, can you?
Probably be some unknown gem tho ❓

      (Quote)

  41. The problem with Samba(who I don’t think we’d get), is who would leave? that’s not an anti-Ashley quote before ya jump down my throat Wolfie 😉 but I can’t see, Taylor Colo or Samba being happy to sit on the bench, so who would go?

  42. has to be squad rotation then Richie.
