Papiss Demba Cisse – Newcastle’s NEW #9

Come in number nine!
Newcastle have signed Senegal international striker Papiss Demba Cisse from Bundesliga outfit SC Freiburg.

The striker has signed a five-and-a-half year deal with the club and will wear the number nine shirt after moving from the German side for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £9 million.

It’s quite a coup for the club in truth. Cisse is one of the most talked about strikers in Europe at the moment thanks to his goalscoring exploits in the Bundesliga and to get him into the club deserves a pat on the back for everyone involved. Not just for showing a bit of ambition, but for the way the deal was done and how fast it was concluded. No other team stood a chance and nobody had a sniff until it was too late.

Moving onto the waffle now, and Cisse insists that he will give his all for the club and understands exactly what the number nine shirt means around these parts thanks to Alan Pardew.

“I would like to thank everybody for their welcome, and for inviting me to sign for the Club,” Cissé told the official club website.

He continued: “It is an honour to play for such a big club and I am looking forward to it. I want to pay back the confidence the Club have shown in me, and give the supporters something to be proud of.

“I am aware of the huge importance of the number nine shirt, and when I spoke with the manager he made it very clear how important this shirt is. I will treat it with the respect and I hope to do my very best in this shirt.”

So we finally have our replacement for Andy Carroll then. Those aren’t my words or my opinion. They are instead the words of Alan Pardew who revealed that Cisse was his first choice to replace the former number nine.

“Ever since Andy Carroll left, Papiss was my first choice in the specific role he has at the end of the play,” he told nufc.co.uk. “He is a finisher with an already-established CV in the Bundesliga, where we have monitored him for the best part of two years.”

“Unfortunately he was out of reach, financially, for us in the summer, but it recently became apparent that Derek Llambias and Lee Charnley could do the deal in this window.”

“It has become obvious this season that the team and the Club have done exceptionally well, and Mike Ashley has backed me to bring this player to the Club. I would like to thank Mike, Derek and everyone involved for getting this deal over the line.”

Cisse is good mates with Demba Ba which bodes well for us and for Demba’s continued stay in Tyneside. Maybe he’ll have second thoughts if a big club comes knocking now? We’ll see, but for now Pardew insists that Ba is happy with the opportunity to link up with his international teammate at club level.

“I spoke to Demba about Papiss, and he cannot wait to join up with his teammate in Newcastle,” said Pardew.

“In the short-term, of course, he is at the African Cup of Nations, but the competition he will bring to our squad when he joins up with us should inspire the players and reassure them of this Club’s ambition.”

“Our fans know that this shirt brings its own pressures. One of the iconic numbers in world football – the number nine of Newcastle. It will be only fair that Papiss is given time to understand the responsibility it brings.”

“As the manager, I wish him all the luck in the world to bring success to himself and this Club.”

Managing Director Derek Llambias added: “We are very pleased to bring Papiss to the Club.”

“It is a signing which perfectly complements the type of side Alan is building, and we are sure he will prove to be an excellent acquisition going forward.”

“He has travelled a long way to come and sign with us today, and we thank the Senegalese Football Federation for their assistance in helping us secure the player.”

Hats off to Pardew, Ashley, Llambias and Charnley. They’ve delivered the goods in the transfer market for once although I’m not getting too carried away just yet as the window is still open and players can still leave.

Still, that’s for another day. For now lets just enjoy this. We don’t often pull off signings like this, but we have and we can enjoy it. Hopefully Cisse will click straight away and hit the kind of goals his figures suggest that he can.

Welcome to NUFC, Papiss Demba Cisee!

  1. Get the F*ck in! Get the F*ck in! Get the F*ck iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin!

(To the tune of “let’s go f*ckin mental, let’ go f*ckin mental , la laa la la, la laa la la!)

PAPA DEMBA CISSE, PAPA DEMAB CISSE, LA LAA LA LA, LA LAA LA LA

    😈 😈 😈 😈

  2. Just hope the fans don’t jump down his throat if he takes some time to settle (ala Colo, Enrique).
Excellent signing though. Its going to be a nerve wrecking last 12 days of the window…
If we get that strong versitile defender like Mbiwa, we will have a very strong squad. Far better than anything outside the top seven, are light years better than the Scum.

  3. Whooo… #09 Shirt.. Hope he don’t pressurized himself too much. 😕

So we have, leon best, shola,Løvenkrands,ba,cisse, xisco as the strikers available.

    +Sammy.

  4. Have we signed a centre back yet? 👿 ….to be honest, I know we could do with one, but I’d be happy enough if we got Colo to sign on the dotted line and no major outgoings and just pray for no injuries, even just got a CB on loan would do me now.

      (Quote)

  5. Yeah I agree JJ, even now some are doing it with Obertan.

I’ve got a friend that lived in Germany for a while and follows the Bundesliga, he claims that Cisse is “better than Ba”! And that Freiburg are basically a division 2 team that he has been keeping them in the top league single handedly.

I think we should just sign Ridgwell, probs about 5 mill for a proven player that can cover left back and centre back and has premiership experience. Would certainly do till the end of the season anyway.

      (Quote)

  6. Solano

They did it with Solano too when he replaced Gillespe 😉 And he became a hero too.
I agree they are doing it with Obertan. The only reason I slate Ameobi is he’s been here 11 years…

Also, hope your German friend is right about Cisse, because Ba basically made Hoffenheim title challengers single handedly. They are both great strikers…

      (Quote)

  7. Great signing! I just hope Ba dosent leave in the summer and this guy is his long term replacement. That will take a lot of the shine off this move.
Having both up front would be very tastey. I can see plenty goals from these guys this season. Just hope it continues next season!

    HWTL!!

  8. Both big and fast. Could be like having two Drogba’s 😆

Cisse is 6′, Ba is 6’2″…

Ba left footed, Cisse right footed. Ba likes to drop deep, Cisse is more of a poacher. Could be a dream partnership.

      (Quote)

  9. Proper chuffed we got cisse like, wasn’t too excited by erdinc to be honest. Now we got two of the most prolific strikers in Europe at the moment.
    Happy days!

      (Quote)

  10. @JJ: That’s what i said yesterday. 😉 We could have our own drogba making.

    Anyway,who hasn’t seen this news.. Is laughable. 😆 😆

Adidas AG (ADS) declined to renew its apparel deal with Liverpool because the price was too high given the 18-time English soccer champion’s poor performance, the chief executive officer of the world’s second-biggest sporting goods maker said.

Liverpool, which is also a five-time European champion, has replaced Adidas with a club record, 6-year, 25 million pound ($38.3 million) contract with Warrior Sports, a subsidiary of New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. The accord, Warrior’s first major soccer contract, begins next season and is worth almost double the current agreement with Adidas.

Liverpool has struggled to recapture glories that made it England’s dominant team during the 1970s and 80s. It hasn’t won a league championship since 1990 and last season was overtaken by Manchester United as the holder of the most titles. Liverpool didn’t make the Champions League, Europe’s top club competition, this season and is seventh in the Premier League, 13 points behind leader Manchester City.

“The gap between their performance on the field and what the number should be is not in balance,” Adidas CEO Herbert Hainer said in an interview in Munich yesterday. “Then we said, ‘Okay we will not do it. That’s the end of the story.’” Liverpool didn’t respond.

  11. George Caulkin in the Times is saying Ba’s release clause can’t be activated until the summer. New deal on the way I suspect made easier now he has his pal at the Toon 😀

Daily Fail saying Toon have slapped a£15 million price tag on Krul with Spuds interested. They must read this blog 😆 IF we sold Krul (and I don’t think we will) he is worth more than that – Man U paid £18 million for the DeGea (spelling?) fella

      (Quote)

  12. Maybe Adidas weren’t impressed with the racism row at Liverpool? Having said that looks like they got a much better deal from Warrior Sports. **** em anyway – hopefully we will finish above them now 😆

      (Quote)

  13. Are we getting the balance right now?

Half way between Shepherds money throwing days and Ashley’s original policy of cheap buys.

At this stage we are but there’s another 12 days to go.

      (Quote)

  14. Haha JJ I think Shola will always get stick, he’s the classic panto villain!
Never want to see him starting for us but he’s part of the furniture, it would be too emotional seeing him play for someone else!

Could be strikers sorted now, Bestie has shown he can be an able back up.

      (Quote)

  15. BY THE WAY

It is a sign of all of us (particuarly the negative posters) that our level of excitement for a player most of us have admitted to have never seen play far surpassed that of the signing of Ba, who had proven he could cost the mustard in the Prem.

Think this shows that if Ba had cost 15Mill in the summer less people would have complained at the end of the window.

(However I too am feeling more excited by this signing, maybe seeing some $$ spent excites every single one of us.)

      (Quote)

  16. I don’t know what surprises me more. The quality of player we have just brought in or the fact the club spent that amount of money.

To say I am shocked is an understatement. Really happy though and credit where it is due. You fat f*ckin arsehole (couldn’t leave it positive could I?)

      (Quote)

  17. Who would have thought 6 months ago, that this would be the season where we:

1.) have a realistic chance of getting into Europe again
2.) potentially have the best strike force since Shearer & Ferdinand

    ???!!!

I’m over the moon about the sudden change of potential our squad holds. If nobody leaves, and get the contracts sorted for Coloccini, Guthrie and Ba, along with signing another versatile defender, preferably Mbiwa – there is no need to think, that most of our players will want to be a part of this project even beyond the summer. If we keep this bunch together, why would they want to leave for Arsenal or Liverpool?

We’re on the up, and much faster than initially expected!

      (Quote)

  18. We should really be looking to move lovenkrands and ranger out too, get em off te wage bill. As well as bloody Xisco…

      (Quote)

  19. Great signing and credit to Ashley for this one. Just hope nobody leaves now.

Something Pardew mentioned about the signing showing the current players the clubs ambition. Wonder if the likes of Colo have been questioning our ambition and not signing the contract extension due to that.

Hopefully Colo ans Simpson will sign shortly and then it will be a good January!

      (Quote)

  20. Reading comments on the Chronicle website some people are crediting Richard Branson for this signing!! 😆

      (Quote)

  21. Moreno….I think Xisco will sit on the last year and a half of his contract unfortunately, nobody will buy him cos’ he’s **** and always injured 👿

      (Quote)

  22. Dembaaaaaaaaa…

    Demba Ba @dembabafoot 1m
I think even when he sleeps, he think about the back of the net. Welcome to papisto

    😀 😀 😀

  23. TC…aye, seen a couple on here too…….soooooo one more time, the Virgin 2yr deal starts next season, this season is a continuation of the NR deal. Even if we did have the money for the new deal the club have said before that they will never spend money in advance. 😀

      (Quote)

  24. @Mark

Not at all fella. Clearly Ashley has been reading my posts. I’ve always maintained we need a balance between Shepherds loose wallet and Ashley’s moth ball ridden one.

As long as Ashley changes I’ve always maintained I will forgive.

12 days to go, I’m not jumping round like zebbity but will if no one is sold.

Unfortunately, I trust my source too much and my zebbity springs are still in the cupboard. 😛

      (Quote)

  25. Still Troys wig covered brain doesn’t get it, the club have bought a player, they have the financials, therefore if we have bought him, we can afford him – this is 100 percent in line with their model.

The club have extracted value from the market again – its utterly consistent.

He is trying (skin cringingly) to back away from his own argument – and he will not show his **** or share a cucumber with Toonsy – in Fenwicks window. What a sad little tramp he is 😆

      (Quote)

  26. Looks like a great signing.

Please lads give this fella the rest of the season and time to settle.

Just need to get the defender over the line now and a successful window.

Still hearing rumours about Simpson to QPR or Fulham.

  27. @Troy

yes, true there are 12 days left, but like I told u regarding fabaye, have a bit of patience and things will come good.

I’d get those springs oot of the cupbord m8!! 😀

From what I can gather, I understood that to be the case too. The money for Cisse came from Ashley. Not from the club’s finances. I’m assuming we still have around 5mil or so to spend.

      (Quote)

  34. TC 😆

Stuart…that journo(I know) Mark Douglas reckons there’s still about £8m left for a defender and maybe another player and that Cisse was a “money there for a special signing” deal

  35. Robert… Aye, “when I’m feeling blue, all I have to do”….is pop on to RTG-SMB, they have about 10 toon threads a day to talk about how obsessed we are about them 😆

      (Quote)

  36. Good signing. Couple of points, however:

    1) I hope the fella is given time. I fear that given the quick impact our recent signings have had (Tiote, Cabaye, Ba) – if for some reason he doesn’t make a good impression early doors, he will be labelled as *****. I know he (and the club) made the right noises but the #9 will be a burden.

    2) Also don’t be too surprised if Ba will not score as many goals. One of the main reasons for his form was due to Best’s good hold-up play. So if PDC plays at the top (being the little man) then it’ll be B that’ll be doing most of the holding-up.

  38. why would the money have to come from ashley.
when we have the judas money..
all ashley has to do is show some ambition and resist selling a top player in this window.
and i might forgive him a bit.
but he still has a long way to go in my eyes it has took him almost 5 year to show some balls..

      (Quote)

  39. Love the Scum thread…

“Cisse wouldn’t have worked anyway, playing a 4-3-3 we don’t need a light weight striker”

Yes, thats why they he is six foot 75kgs… 😆

  40. @Hitman

The bouncing TIGGERS are at it again. This deal has to be financed. Using common sense, Tiote is our most saleable asset.

He will be sold on the final weekend as per history and no time to replace.

Bouncy flouncy trouncy bouncy what a wonderful Tigger Mark is.

      (Quote)

  41. hey i will be at ashley till he shows this club the respect it deserves and if ne one likes it tuff..

theres a rumour doing the rounds the the scum payed to fly cisse up here . 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  42. Stuart

Could be a simple interpretation of the financials.

Say Ashley was due ‘x’ as part of his Directors loan being repaid and instead – Ashley takes ‘Y’ – think he was just trying to get the haters to give Ashley some credit. Credit goes to all for this one DL included.

Troy’s looking more gimpish by the moment – even now he is trying to get attention (like every day) for himself. Time to ban Troy me thinks 😆

      (Quote)

  43. Ashley is still owed over £100 million according to the last accounts. Even if he pocketed all of the Carroll £35 million he would still be owed £65 million. If the club is breaking even then he has either loaned the club some further money or has delayed taking back some of his previous loan. Either way the money has come out of his pocket.
The whole of the club’s financing needs to be looked at rather than just banging on about the Carroll £35 million.

      (Quote)

  44. Great sîgning.. still the moaners out there are questioing how the deal was done.Every siver cloud has black lining, I guess.

      (Quote)

  45. Hitman…The Toon flew him up by private jet apparently….although the mackems paying is a better version and the one I think we should stick too 😆

  47. Here’s a name from the past…

    Jan Aage Fjortoft @JanAageFjortoft
Congratulations to #nufc. Cisse is a great goalgetter! Best transfer on this level in this transferwindow so far

Was it Chelsea he used to play for? Was canny if memory serves me right.

      (Quote)

  48. Actually, scrap that – just Googled him – he played for Boro and was average at best. I must have been thinking of someone else…

    Torre Andre Flo (spelling?) possibly?

It is a great signing and I’m over the moon. But I’m not bouncing round like the TIGGER brigade until the window closes and no one leaves.

I base my opinions on history. What do you base yours on? Dreams? 😛

      (Quote)

  50. Great signing… dont forgot to those doubters that this deal wasnt just £10m he has 51/2 years wages to consider etc so this does show ambition.

Showing too much ambition and you end up like bolton, in loads of debt, darlo, pompey etc

  52. Troy @16 – couldn’t have summed it up better. Balance is a good word. But I’m really looking forward to Feb 1st so I can grow some fingernails back.

Best of all, this signing removes the doubt about whether the transfer policy was about price or value. It looks pretty clear that it’s the latter, which is great news. So impressed by the club’s recruitment machine right now.

      (Quote)

  53. Did I mention your name Troy?? Or do you automatically class yourself as a moaner? Obviously being happy about a class signing is beyond you. Who knows what the rest of the window will bring. I will worry if I need to when something to worry about actually happens!

  54. I guess this puts all fears of signing players like Carlton Cole to rest – that itself will make me sleep better at night ..

Liverpool have spent a combined £75m on Andy Carroll, Stuart Downing & Jordan Henderson! Congratulations King (my ***!) Kenny, and good luck with that ..

      (Quote)

  56. Richie, agree. Just need a center back now, hopefully with Premier League experience, even just on loan if we don’t want to spend anything else – just any sort of cover really 😆

      (Quote)

  57. Even the haters must acknowledge that we have the best set up for x or so years? Everything we seem to do is well considered – we don’t follow crowds any more – we are leading in a brilliant way to run a club.

I understand some still are cautious but anyone hating right now is just showing themselves up to be fair.

      (Quote)

  58. @aussie

I’ve told you am happy with signing. But I’m not jumping round like the Tigger brigade.
I’m basing my views on history.

Cometh the final weekend history shows players leave and he cashes in.

If that doesn’t happen then history is rewritten and my views of Ashley will change.

Can’t be more logical than that can I ?

You keep basing your views on dreams. Which ever way it turns out you look like foolish. 😯 🙄

  59. I can picture Wolfie, sat in his rocking chair with a smile on his face muttering – £15m to go. Lol

I have noticed the non believers haven’t posted yet.

Full credit MUST go to MA and the board for this one. They have stuck to their word, which was that the money would be spent but they would not pay over the odds for a player. Freiburg wanted something like £15m for this lad in the summer – we paid in the region of £9m.
I really hope though that this signing does not make them take their eye off the ball and they continue to work on other deals in the pipeline.

Great to have a number 9 again, welcome and best of luck Cisse.
