I also said how surprised that with just one week to go we still hold that accolade, so I thought I’d take a look at it and see just what is going on.
So far in this window a total of £18.4m has been spent by Premier League clubs according to Sky Sports, with the bulk of that figure coming from the transfers of Papiss Demba Cisse to us and Gary Cahill to Chelsea. Beyond that though not a lot of clubs are doing anything which is in stark contract to last January when a total of £215m was spent. It would take some serious investment for this window to equal the last one!
What is causing this though? Do clubs, in general,not have the cash they once had? Are they keeping their powder dry for the latter stages of the window? Are they watching the purse strings in anticipation of these much talked about Financial Fair Play Rules coming into play?
I don’t know. There are clubs who have been told that they must sell before they buy. Tottenham are one of them and they love to do a deal in January. It’s why Sky love Harry Redknapp. Liverpool are very quiet also. Perhaps Dalglish’s boss is less than impressed with the players bought for the best part of £150m? Alex Ferguson insists he is not really looking in January as you can’t get any value, which is odd for a club the size of Manchester United, and Arsenal are just Arsenal.
Pretty much none of the big hitters have done anything yet, but the thing that strikes me is that they don’t look likely to do anything. Rumours are thin on the ground and whilst it’s not a complete picture it’s a marked contrast to previous seasons.
The obvious fact is that these big hitters can just go out and splash the cash at very short notice, or at least they used to be able to, so things could change at very short notice. I don’t envisage the transfer window ending with so little cash spent. Only 18 deals have been completed and eight clubs are still yet to sign anybody. It’s quiet, very quiet.
I just hope it stays that way!

Is it fair to say that Liverpool are sort of doing a Leeds and gambling on finishing in the champs league spots after spending £100m. I was having a conversation about this earlier and I couldn’t really answer where they get all that money from other than having American investors and being in lots of debt. Yet for some reason we never seem to think if they don’t finish in the top 4 (likely) that they would be in financial trouble. Why is this? Can anybody answer. Do Liverpool and Man U just have a much larger income stream to Leeds?

DJG – I went through the Liverpool transfers a few months ago and they actually come out reasonably even interms of outgoings and incomings. It’s only the past year or so they have spent a fair bit more than they have sold on, but I dont think things are that bad them to be honest. Unfortunately!

DJG-Yeah as Shamrock says, they’re not that badly off when it comes to transfers in total, and secondly yes they’re branding is far larger than leeds’. They’re probably still the second biggest team in both England and the wider world in terms of branding. Unfortunately 👿

So they are selling good players that other top clubs want (and will pay a lot for i.e Torres) and they are then spending over the odds to take the next big thing English players from clubs like Newcastle and Sunderland. I’t a very risky strategy if you ask me, selling quality international proven players for one season wonder youngsters. It clearly isn’t working. Maybe it’s just Dogleash.

DJG @ 91, their brand is huge and therefore they get some good money that way (Merchandise sales and sponsorship). And as long as they can service the debt, they can continue to operate. That’s the problem with clubs that have gone into administration and such…just can’t service the debt. Man Utd is what, like a $1Billion in debt, but they can service it…so they can still operate. Somehow that seems wrong, but until a bank comes calling for it all at once, there’s no reason they can’t keep operating as normal.
Personally, and I don’t know why, but I keep hoping Liverpool and Man Utd’s debt catch up with them and they crash hard. But due to brand strength, that just won’t happen.

But surely they are just the same as me or you, or a government ect. The more and more money they owe the more interest the bank is going to want to service the debt and it gets to the point where they are just paying interest and not the actual amount back; it can’t be healthy and it’s hardly a strong financial position to be in. I don’t care how many Man U t-shirts and baseball caps they are selling in Singapore.

I would take him back if he appologised and admitted he was wrong in leaving, but lets face it it wouldn’t happen anyway. He’s on big money and Lpool definitely won’t sell him for cheap as he’s still playing well for them. Santon should hopefully become a better player than him all round, and if we can bring in an equally cheap and able right back we’ll have no need of jose anyway.

Tsunki-we certainly used to, when I was about 7 I moved to singapoore and on arrival I managed to find the figures of our 1997-1998 squad on sale, with the only other club being man united 😀 When I moved to Aus a couple of years later we were fairly well known there, although people thought people with geordie accents were Irish or Scottish usually 😆
They were in the good times though..you’ll still find toon shirts around the place, but as far as breaking into “new” markets like China, I don’t really know if we’ve had any success at all. No doubt we’ve been losing ground to teams like spurs and city and possibly even Villa.

Like I said, I think the only time it would become an issue is if the bank comes calling for the full amount. The problem with Greece, Portugal and others in the Eurozone, was the fact that the governments couldn’t even service their debt…so they were relegated after selling off what assets they had…moved from 2nd world nation down to 3rd world nation. 😀
Now, they may also run into a situation where they try to refinance the loan or extend it, and no bank wants to have that debt on its books…I think that’ why the two yanks that used to own L’pool had to sell…or at least the bank sold to the new yank because they wanted rid of that debt obligation and they couldn’t handle it. So, who knows maybe the Glazers will find themselves in that situation eventually as well. One can only hope.

Personally I’d like to see a youngster who could take Colo’s place in the long term and who can play in the cup matches nowadays or do a job when called upon…only problem is I have no idea who could fill that role 😕 Either way we need a decent young prospect IMO if Kadar is never going to play again..
