Pardew blames lack of attack for Brighton cup exit

Pardew laments attacking threat
Alan Pardew has blamed a lack of creativity and goal threat for our rather dismal FA Cup exit last night.

I’m inclined to agree with him. I’ve calmed down a bit now and had some time to reflect, and aside from lacking in the attacking department we weren’t too bad and had control of the rest of the game.

Unfortunately though, if you can’t create chances or put them away then you’ll be in trouble. Brighton scored with their only real effort on target but if you can’t find the back of the net yourself then you are in trouble.Hopefully this situation will be rectified when we get our main strikers from Africa.

“It’s disappointing because we wanted to go through in this competition, of course,” Pardew told the official club site after the game.

“We didn’t threaten the goal enough tonight. We didn’t have enough creativity. We controlled the game today for long, long periods, but didn’t threaten the goal enough. The whole game we had a good grip on, without ever really unlocking them.”

“The goal was disappointing and maybe because Danny got booked he had to pull out of the challenge, and that set them on the break. They then got a bit of luck to get the goal.”

“They defended well to be fair to them, but we should have threatened the goal more with the possession we had.”

Another disappointing weekend, and it all starts up front for me. To me Shola and Best just weren’t good enough yesterday, either individually or as a pairing. Whenever we got forward there was nowhere to go and the move broke down.

The strikers aren’t the only ones who should garner some criticism however. Our wingers were both awful and I’m struggling to recall a time that Hatem Ben Arfa actually did anything of note. Likewise Jonas Gutierrez, who spent most of his time not being where he was supposed to be leaving our left side pretty vacant.

Still we must now bounce back against Blackburn on Wednesday evening. A positive result at Ewood Park will set us up for the home game against Aston Villa a week today, and if we can get four points from that we can still push on at least give qualifying for Europe a real good go.

“We’ve now got a big game on Wednesday night and we need to make sure we get the right response. There’s two big games this week,” Pardew explained.

“Blackburn is not a good place to bounce back and will be a tough game, but we will threaten the goal a little bit more on Wednesday I hope.”

Wellin terms of our attack at least, we certainly can’t be much worse!

  1. Anyone else get that shitty feeling that we’re going one way and the Mackems are going the other, and not the directions we’d like?

  2. Big Dave, I have met Pardew quite a few times and think he`s doing a great job but this was a bad judgement call and coupled with tactically naive lineups in the last 2xgames leaves him open to question by the media. Yes you have to keep the wags happy, they have the most influence on the players. Many a player has moved clubs because of them and they need to know that they can trust their partner and that the manager is looking after them. Pardew got it wrong, different if he wasn`t there but he was!!

  3. And that’s why people who call Best and Shola only championship standard are talking *****….

That Mclean looks decent, unfortunately. Can’t see many of our youngsters making the step up really 😕

  4. STUART aren’t you happy with 6th place?
Are you gutted we aren’t pushing Man City and Man Utd for the title?

  5. Big Dave>Because Emnes is championship standard. He might even be upper tier championship. And he’s gash. You do get some quality players in the CC who can make the step up, but do people really know what the majority of championship strikers are like?

      (Quote)

  6. Newkie;

The majority of championship strikers are like Best and a few divisions better than Shola.

  7. Over the last two months we have lost 7 out of 13, they have won something like 7 out of 10. Think that proves my point.

Wolfie – I’m delighted with 6th but unless you know something nobody else in the world does, the league finishes in May, not January.

      (Quote)

  8. STUART, so what you’re saying is, our season is over now and it’s down hill because the season finishes in May?

So you’re discounting the fact that Tiote isn’t in the side, Ba and Cisse to come in, plus what we bring in before the window closes and you’re writing us off for the rest of the season.

Correct me if I’m wrong but that’s how it reads to me.

  9. Boro have actrrible habit of conversing late goals and the Mackems like scoring them under O’Neill.

Newkie there is no point me explaining as I think Best and Strolla are championship standard so I must be one of the ones talking **** 😀
But If you think they’re prem quality thats your opinion and your entitiled to your opinion so I won’t be telling you your talking **** 😉

  12. Ok, Wolfie, I don’t think you’re stupid, but boy you do act it sometimes.

The whole point of my argument is that Sunderland seem to be on an upward curve and we’re inconsistent at best at the minute. If it carries on it won’t be long until they’re above us.

I’m not saying it will happen, I’m saying at this moment in time they are the club with momentum. Is that not the way it is? That is a fact!

Now when Ba, Tiote and Cisse all cone back it could be different but that’s for the future.

Also not sure what your point is regarding our season being over, I never said that, you know I never said that. You just wished I’d said that so it would give you something to beat me with.

Look at all my comments, they’re are all based on facts, not imaginary comments to suit an argument like you seem to do.

You’re credibility in my eyes is seriously under threat from your ridiculous statements about £25m being spent this month. Also your consistent, unwarranted and totally outrageous statements that are based on pure fantasy but are meant to male you look positive, even though they male you look silly.

  13. Pardew could do worse than get his **** across to the Boro and sign williams. He can play anywhere across the back four and looked strong in midfield today. He has also got the height that we need at the back.

  14. Big Dave-well yeah I appologise for saying people are talking ****, just got moody from yesterday and cause I thought Sunderland were gonna grab a late winner…happy again now 😀

  15. STUART, my credibility on a blog mans nothing to me and I expect it to mean nothing to others as I’m simply a name.
You are bleating on about the Mackems in the ascendancy and we are falling from grace, that’s how you are wording it.

You forget the Martin O’neil up the anti factor and he’s got them playing but they are equally if not more likely to go on a bad run as we are.

We are 1 or 2 games away from having our full compliment of quality playing, so where you get the”Sunderland will replace us” from I don’t know.

You’re almost saying that Sunderland will go on a Man Utd type run while we do a Blackpool.

Plus I don’t pass anything off as positive mate, I am positive and you making statements like you do makes you a doom monger. 😀

      (Quote)

  20. Again, Wolfie, look at my comments. I’ve never said Sunderland WILL replace us, never.

You see, I made a perfectly factual comment and you’ve turned it into a big debate about me saying ‘Sunderland will replace us’.

    LOOK AT MY COMMENT AGAIN!

The facts are we aren’t playing well and winning at the minute, Sunderland are. Is that wrong? Because basically that’s the only point inmade at the start of this.

      (Quote)

  21. ICEDOG, I’ve got no qualms with what STUART has to say, rightly or wrongly in my eyes. I also have my views and I will express them, rightly or wrongly in other peoples eyes, that’s what blogs are about and I’m simply debating a point to him.

That’s what you said, now to me that reads, Sunderland are passing us on the up and we are passing them downwards.

If I’ve read that wrong then I apologise but that’s clearly how it reads to me.

STUART, that’s how it reads to me and I bet many others. If you’re saying you didn’t mean we are slipping down while Sunderland go up then why type it.

If two lifts in a sky scraper have 9 floors between them and one descends and one ascends, then they pass each other right.

So in your mind, Sunderland and Newcastle are those elevators and your horrible feeling is they will pass each other, we go downwards , they come upwards. 😉

  34. @Stu

Ive read your comments m8 and would say, don’t worry about Sunderland, who are in great form due to the appointment of MoN but we have lost some great characters due to injuries and AcoN so I’d expect a small blip from us. I’m sure they’d still swap positions. And like I said, I doubt they can improve their team much as MoN has already hinted about lack of funds.

  37. Can’t believe I’m about to do this having been pissed off last night and most of today but Newcastle have only been poor for the last game and a half.
In Jan we picked up 6 points from a possible 9, that’s not too bad with a weakened team in my opinion. We have our main strikers on the way back, Tiote shouldn’t be far behind them and Colo should be fit for the Blackburn game.
The mackems are still 9 points behind us, of course we all know we have lost a bigger lead than that before, but as improved as Sunderland seem to be, I don’t think they will make up the points to catch or over take us… in my opinion

      (Quote)

  38. Wolfie – I may have given you too much credit in an earlier comment, I think you are stupid.

My original comment was referring to the present, not the future. As I keep saying they’re playing well, we’re not at this moment. Now where does that say they are going to overtake us?

We are 9 points in front if then, the directions are am talking about might change in the next few weeks, it might continue, who knows.

Your lift analogy is stupid too. You’re assuming the two lifts are starting from the same point for one to overtake the other. If we’re starting on the 6th floor and they’re on the 2nd there’s a lot can happen before we get level.

My view us simple, at the moment the lifts are going in the wrong direction if you’re an NUFC fan – presently! But we’re starting higher so nobody is saying they will overtake us.

I really don’t know how much easier I can explain it for you.

i thought we bossed the game meself but i will admit i did not see the whole game had to lisen on the radio,i did see the highlights and thought we done everything but score meself, shola was unlucky 2nd half went close, best also went close in first half.

  40. Last season the aim was to stay up ,this season a top ten finish seemed to be the general concensus of opinion in august. Well we have had an amazing start and sit in 6th place, but because of injurys, daft tatics and some well dodgy refs could be doing even better. The point is it’s mostly all gravy and we should not get too down. However i totally understand Stuarts fears that the momentum is with the Scum at present but really feel that it’s new manager syndrome and won’t last cause their team is *****.Wolfie makes the point that once all our best guys are back we’ll be firing again and i would concur with him on that. However i think Stuart may be worried that there may be irriversable damage to team moral by then and we’ll keep slipping down. I really think it really is a case of it ain’t over till the fat lady sings and we just have to sit tight and hope it turns good again. Look at Everton they nearly always start ***** and come good yet it’s the same players and manager every year so explain that. 🙄 Well that’s my butterfly impression for the day 😉

      (Quote)

  41. STUART, learn to read thicko. Take a look at my lift analogy and you’ll see I have Newcastle 9 floors up.

Sugar coat it how you want but I know you were on about Sunderland overtaking us , you just didn’t actually say it STUPID. 😀

Just playing *** for tat STUART, so don;t get your paddy pads in a damp down. 😀

  43. Wolfie – Sorry forgot to mention the lift analogy. You mentioned we were 9 floors above, sorry. But that doesn’t change the fact that their lift ‘could’ break down on it’s way up to ours.

But as per my original point (that you have a mental block on) AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME they’re going up and we’re coming down.

      (Quote)

  44. STUART@146, you are wrong.
At this moment in time, both lifts are stationary, and will continue in motion on wednesday night.

      (Quote)

  45. Toonarmyelite – yeah, as the away side we had good possession, and certainly the better chances. That wasn’t the problem for me, it’s what you do with it, much like the first half of Fulham which should have been over be half time the way we played.
I can’t remember who said it on an earlier article but you can have all the possession and create all the chances in the world, if you don’t have another who can put them away you always run the risk of getting beat.
To be fair, we all knew it was our biggest problem while Ba was away but all hoped that Best or Shola or HBA would step up and they haven’t.
My concern at the mo in the papers is that Wolves want Best, that would make Shola 3rd choice…. very not good!!
