The quest for Europe steps up on Sunday!

Dirty Monkey Mackems

Dirty Monkey Mackems Ok. So at this point, with 12 games of the season left and 43 points on the board, we are looking to head to Europe – although that could tempt the ‘be careful what you wish for’ saying.

The squad we currently have is most certainly unable to cope with so many games in such little time if we were to get to the Europa League. Maybe we would follow the same route as Spurs and play almost a reserve team- and ‘concentrate on the league’ but that would be a waste of a flight wouldn’t it?

But is the Europa League any good for us? Because after all, it’s sh*t and second best much like the League Cup. Would we get any money from it? No. We would have to somehow get the money to buy in a lot of good players (not just satisfactory) to strengthen the team during the summer, because simply the likes of James Perch, Mike Williamson and Danny Guthrie aren’t good enough.

But then comes the need for Europe. Demba Ba, Colo and more are never going to stay if we don’t get there. So it is important we do in some sort of form because there is even the big one to mention. The Champions League. If we got there, Ashley wouldn’t need to graffiti the stadium with his blue and red tack because we would be in the money and happy for once. We would have the money to buy in back up players and contract problems – what are they? So you see where I’m going? We have to get to the Champions League this season or never – well 10 years time anyway.

The chances of getting into Europe this season are high. Chelsea look hopeless right now and things on and beyond the pitch just aren’t going good for them at the moment. Arsenal are the same. I can’t see their defence keeping another clean sheet this season. Yes they just killed Spurs 5-2, (to the pleasure of the larger percentage of the toon who dislike Arry) but truly their woeful performances in matches before outweigh that. They aren’t ever going to be like the Invincibles again. They are pretty much a one man team, but, that one man is better than Batman when he is on form! That would be the only reason they would finish 4th- Robin Van Persie and their +16 goal difference.

Then come the daft Scousers – I’d rather walk alone. They are already in the Europa League after the League Cup performance. I loved Stevie Gee’s face when he missed his penna! So where I’m going is, even if we finish 6th if it is a Spurs v Liverpool final of the FA Cup, we are still in with a chance.

The ‘must’ of this season is the Europa League. The ‘should’ is Champions League. I can see us getting at least 21 more points this season but concentrate one match at a time. Next match being the Mackems at home. That should be interesting!

However Alan Pardew does it, three points is a must. This time next week we could be in ecstasy like the 1st of November 2010, the day after the demolition derby, or just elated, like the 21st of August 2011, the day after Ryan Taylor Over The Wall. Either way, it’s a six points party. Super Senegalese Sunday the sequel? Bend it Taylor? The curly one strikes again? All aboard the dreamboat? Boom Cheik Cheik Cheik the room? Shola? Hatembomb? We will see!

Howay The Lads!!!!!!!

Oh and at 13 minutes on Saturday the entire 52,000 singing ‘Stand Up for St James’ Park’ was momentus. Make it a tradition!

  1. Off course we should go for Europe I cant see many negative to getting in but can see lots of positives.
As for Guthrie isn’t good enough 😯
I think we need to forget about CL for this season, As for the Arse being a oneman team what would that make us then or has Ba not really got us where we are.

  2. Aye Dave, Guthrie has been top notch for me, some of his performances have made Cabaye look like the stand in.

I agree that the Europa League is sh*t, not even the CL’s little brother, a distant cousin maybe. But i’d still love us to get there. I honestly don’t get this whole argument, I mean, if we aren’t trying to get into European competition then what the hell’s the point? Are we saying we’d rather finish 8th than 5th to purposefully miss out on Thursday night trips to the Ukraine? I won’t be going, but the lads should be.

  3. Archie, think the worry is strain on the squad, league form maybe being affected. Would it be worth it if we finished 10th because of it? And the Europa doesn’t provide enough revenue to fund a few signings, in fact it’s a bit of a joke in comparison to the money for the CL. Nearly have to win the thing to make it worth your while or have a very big squad to start. In saying that I’d gladly sacrifice the league and fa cup next year for European nights. Just don’t think we could go far and push for it again next season without 5 or 6 more signings

  4. Guthrie has had a few good ames recently but Cabaye was great first 12 to 15 games , for me Guthries form would have to continue for a lot longer to fill Cabayes boots .
As for europe i think champions league is beyond us and imo MA wont spend enough to strenthen the squad wether we qualify for europe or not ! so lets get into the europa league and enjoy the ride 😉 and hopefully hold on to our good players for as long as we can with a few euro away games to some wonderful places thrown in 😉
As for sunday i cant wait and player for player we should beat them but derbys are funny old things , howay colo lead the lads out to pi*s all over them 😛

  5. Theres more pro’s than cons by getting into Europa.

We might as well purposely declare that we are not interested in the FA Cup and League Cup if we aren’t interested in Europa in case it affects our league performances .

I recall when Sir Bobby entered us in the inter toto cup pre season just so we could qualify for UEFA.

We qualified and we were the fittest team in the league and had a cracking league run.

Not a debate for me. Aim for CL and we may get Europa. Aim for Europa and we may not qualify.

  6. Keith 😆 I only said that was the solution, I never said the fat fuk would do it 😉
Troy thats it lad reach for the moon and you might hit a star, and hopfully it will be Star dust and wee can stamp all over him 😀

  7. I agree we need Europe in some form like you say, and that the Europa is not exactly the premium competition. However it’s the best we and a whole host of other clubs can hope for in my opinion so why not go for it?

Good first article by the way. Welcome aboard 🙂

  8. The big pros of europe is that you become more attractive for the players. But Europa league doesn’t bring you a lot of money in comparaison of Champions league, so it will be interesting to compete for CL, me I’m really for that. Even if when you look to our game, we seem to not have the level but I don’t care I think with some strategic and right transfer this summer we can be very competitive very quickly.

  9. 😆 Fair play lads, who would have thought the two biggest critics (well informed and constructive as you may be) would be trying to convince a relative dreamer in comparison that we should aim for CL 😆

Reminds me of the wise words of Brendan Gleeson in I Went Down… “No guts, no black pudding. I think you know what I’m talking about” 😀

Stardy seems to be a rarity on site these days.. what’s going on? Out stalking Steven Taylor again? 😀

      (Quote)

  10. Keithr ” Fair play lads, who would have thought the two biggest critics ” yeah I was surprised at HBA and Toonsy too 😆 😆
That was who you were referring to wasn’t it 😀
As for Stardy his pride is hurt because he had to admit that he was wrong about Saylor 😉

  11. Dave – Indeed. I’m working up to a fight between OverTheWall and Zoe 😛

I’ve got the paddling pool sorted, now I just need to find two bikinis and some jelly 😈

      (Quote)

  12. 😯 you dorty perv, and to think your Lass is about to drop too 😀 although my Lass works in a leisure centre so im sure I could sort some bikinis out as for jelly we could have a wipe round 😆 😆 so lets get it on 😉
You’ll need to tell her to drop in have a bit of craic

  13. On topic, what a way to get back on track, by beating “them” with a convincing performance!

Anyone else getting nervous yet? I’m still cool as a cucumber 😯

      (Quote)

  14. me too, oozing confidence as you’ll see from the 2nd article in drafts 😯 actually not as nervous as I expected tbh, West Brom smashing them to pieces helped

  15. not sure if i agree with much in that thread if i am honest lads. i dont think we will get europe this season anyway, i think the wheels are falling off our little wagon now i think and i think that arse, pool and chelsea will be above us without too much problem come the end of the season. I think we will just limp home in the top ten though, which is still great. We see this season in and season out with our lot, they get to a decent position, then start spouting off and it all goes pete tong.. they should just shut up and get on with business instead of giving premature pats on their backs all round ffs.
We cant slag arse too much when they just thumped the team that thumped us. Chelsea no matter how much a a fuk up they are at the minute will still scrape more wins than we will, they also beat us at st james when we were playing at our best.
As for the europa cup or whatever it is called these days, i thought it seemed more prestigious when it was called the UEFA cup. dunno why, its just seemd like a good competion then. To say its shite is kinda of a strange statement i think tho.. its europe ffs and has to be better than a kick in the knackers doesnt it. If its good enough for manure to take seriously who are we to rubbish it? After all, we hardly have a massive recent euro CV to be so off cuff about a european comp.
I will be stunned if we qualify though….
who thinks we will win on sunday then?

      (Quote)

  16. Course we should go for europe, silly argument as far as i’m concerned. Will allow us to get a bigger squad *hopefully* and allow the youngsters much more playing time if they’re not going to get loaned out. Also lets us tinker with a couple of formations perhaps. All good news, not fussed if our league position falters that much-at the end of the day does it matter? So long as we don’t get relegated, the aim of every season should be europe…if we fail to get Europe whilst we’re in Europe its not such a biggie.

Oh and Toonsy re-earlier about the English mentality- Damn right, shame the clock can’t be turned fifteen or even just ten years back. The “passion” argument was hilarious, the players played essentially the same as they have every other time I’ve watched England. The five minutes where we passed it along our back four lazily before going back to Hart for a hoof and then dejectedly strolling up pitch was my favourite part by the way 😆

  17. off topic had to laugh over that santon carry on,getting a letter off the mayor of milan saying hes never saw a mackem in milan 😀 😀 😀

      (Quote)

  18. Ice that was a funny one 😆
Another off topic one A lad was caught trying to break into a house lastnight a few miles away from me, the cops were called at 4am when someone seen him with his arm stuck in the letter box 😆 the dikhead was there from shortly after 1am, the cops had to get the fire brigade out to take the letterbox out so the cops could take him and the letterbox down to the nick. 😆 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  19. On a serious note, while that letter from Milan is funny, I can’t help but think little things like that may come back and bite us on the arse 😕

      (Quote)

  20. On Guthrie for me he has surpassed expectations this season. That said if our aim is to be in the same league position along with Simpson and Williamson just not good enough. A question i always ask is would Guthrie get a game for any of our rivals. None of the so called elite would remotely be interested. Of Everton, Villa, Stoke, SMB’s West Brom again couldn’t see much interest. So if he is not good enough for them how can he be good enough for us.
Truth is to be where we are now next season Jabba is gonna have to get serious with the cheque book

      (Quote)

  21. TOONSY look on the bright side man your mrs is haveing a baby 😀
still never seen a makem in milan like 😉

      (Quote)

  22. Has it not dawned on anyone about Guthrie yet – the lad is in the shop window.
If he was consistently THAT good Pardew wouldn’t have went and bought Cabaye in the first place?! 😕

Derby day is huge in terms of how the remainder of our season goes. I don’t believe we will reach CL spot and Europa would be a bonus but l think our main aim for the run in should be to play well both defensively and offensively. We need to start winning games again and acouple won convincingly would be nice.
It would be great if we started that with a win against the scum, but the midfield battle will be an interesting one.

I’ll be honest, nerves starting to jangle abit now like.

  23. TLR who said he wasn’t good enough or that they wouldn’t take him or is that just your opinion ? if so I beg to differ because I would think that 3 outta them teams would be interested in him.

      (Quote)

  24. TLR well jabba aint going to get his cheq book oot to the level we would like even if he sells a few on in summer we will get a token amount,i think there is a few teams that would take gurthie imo

  25. now there is a thought toby… and a good one for a thread… where will we be next season… can we possibly be fighting in he upper part next time round also? ok we are fading now but we gave it a good bash and will or should finish in the top ten. I say we are fading as April and May games are shocking and we will get some thumping losses out of them ones… we have March to make hay while the sun shines.. wolves was our biggest banker left this season and we dropped the ball on that game. How can we feel confident about the other ones when we didnt nail wolves in our own back yard with full team to pick from against a relegation fodder with no manager?

  26. Big Dave
didn’t make it clear sorry. Its my answer to my question. Random thoughts running through my head.
Strangely not getting excited over the derby. Might be we haven’t been playing well of late. Would love to return to the form of the Manure victory on sunday. How much of that was down to Shola. Bring him back for the SMB’s

      (Quote)

  27. I agree Guthrie has had some very good games this season but he was very poor when he came on against Wolves and against Spurs he strolled back to the box as Adebayore ran past him.

      (Quote)

  28. right lads, temporarily on a computer whilst in London, whats the crake? also will the derby this sunday be on sky?

      (Quote)

  29. still cant get on comments part of site when on phone, can someone help as its becoming increasingly frustrating having to be at a computer whenever i want to have some decent footballing banter 😎 ?

      (Quote)

  30. Andy – First thing try switching your phone off then on again. It works for a lot of things haha

Secondly next time you’re on the mobile site try switching it off right at the bottom of the page. There should be an on off button

      (Quote)

  31. TLR. @ 36.

I don’t feel the derby buzz either at the moment.
More like a feeling of uncertain concern.
I hope we come back to some semblance of form for this match.
I can just about put up with getting beat by them if we put in a good shift and at least have a proper go but if we get beat by them and look like we did against Spuds and Wolves I think i’ll feel distraught.

I really hope Pardew pulls something out the bag.

  32. In order to get 4th spot,we must win sunderland, and that Arsenal lose to Liverpool,Chelsea lose to WBA,and stoke city.

Then when we face arsenal,a must win.

    😐

  33. Just reading that Witters. Deciding whether to make an article out of it or not as I know people will just focus on the “we might struggle to keep our big players” part of it, even though it’s all pretty logical what is being said.

      (Quote)

  34. Our next 5 games will likely give us a good idea of our status in the league and whether or not we can realistically aim for…

    – 4th and CL qualification
    – for 5th/6th and probable Europa Lge qualification
    – or whether we should be hoping to hold onto 7th place and ‘best of the rest’

    4/3 mackems (h) currently 8th
    12/3 Arsenal (a) currently 4th
    18/3 Norwich (h) currently 9th
    25/3 WBA (a) currently 13th
    1/4 Liverpool (h) currently 7th

Can we hope to challenge Arsenal for a CL spot? Are we any better than the teams immediately below us? Can we get a result at West Brom, a team who’ve routinely dominated us home and away over the past few seasons?

      (Quote)

  35. no chance of CL spot, whilst Arsenal, Chelsea aren’t playing that well we unfortunately are playing shit, seems the players and pards happy to play out the season in relative safety
