Game On! Newcastle v Bolton – Captain Colo returns

Game on at St James' Park
A quick turnaround awaits Newcastle United now as they go looking for their fifth win on the spin against Bolton Wanderers this afternoon.

After playing patiently and diligently in our 2-0 win away Swansea on Good Friday, Alan Pardew will know that this time around the onus will most definitely be on us as the home side to ask the questions.

Bolton are teetering above the drop zone at the moment with just a single point separating them from 19th placed Wigan. Coming to St James’ Park on the back of a 3-0 home defeat to Fulham a mere 48 hours ago, Owen Coyle will be keen to see his side recapture the kind of form which, previous to the Fulham game, had seen him side win three games in a row.

As we’re getting towards the “business end” of the season and now we know where we are aiming for, I thought I’d add a little look at who our rivals have today. For the sake of clarity I’m discounting anything above third and below sixth! In short, Tottenham host Norwich City at White Hart Lane in another 3pm kick-off, whilst Chelsea travel to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham this evening with kick-off at 8pm.

If we better Chelsea’s result we’ll go fifth today and if both sides win we’ll stay sixth by virtue of goal difference. That kind of needs addressing as it effectively gives the teams above us an extra point such is the difference between our goal difference and the rest. A good hammering of Bolton today would help that a treat of course, but it’s also games like Tottenham and Fulham away which have hampered that particular stat.

For a more in depth look at the fixture you can peruse my match preview by clicking the blue text. Basically it discusses team news, injury news, form and previous meetings, with a few fun stats thrown in there for good measure.

That’s just about it really. Oh yeah, for a change we’re not being broadcast live here in the UK so if you happen to find a useful link where people can watch the match, and are willing to share it with your fellow NUFC fans, then please feel fee to paste the link for it below.

  1. You can see the pressure has been lifted from the players now. That goal was all it took. Now it looks like we’re enjoying it!

  2. Solano -I love Ba and everything he has done for Toon and I was desperate for him to get a goal today I really was .The fact is he’s been poor today ,that’s o.k he’s been a star and you can forgive the dip in form ,what you can’t forgive is a show of disrespect to Pards like that.I’m actually quite shocked at what he did as I thought better of him than that.

  4. If Fulham get a point tonight against Chelsea…

    We stay fifth
Sunderland drop into the bottom half
    Officially Sunderland can’t catch us!

  5. Ahhh HBA looks so happy!
@Kim, I think Ba’s reaction to being subbed was disgusting for the record. Fine sitting moody on the bench, but you have to acknowledge the manager when you come off.

  6. I guess we can now officially admit we have a problem with Ba?

Also, play Shola with 30 mins left and he is a destroyer. SUPER SUB.

  7. Solano -I’m really really shocked by it ,I thought him more humble and respectfull than that .Gutted to be honest ,one of me fav players . 😥

  10. @Kim
I’m glad he’s upset at his performance. If Pardew insists there is no problem in the post match I do think we should all just drop it though.

  11. Great turn around, I said get the ball to Benny, he’ll always make something happen, good or bad 😆 Moment of magic, we were possibly lucky with that but **** it, another win, some decent rest for our players-hopefully we’ll come back loooking energetic again.

And hopefully Pards sorts out Ba’s attitude problem.

  12. A strange thing we never score from Free kick, I don’t remember the last goal we don’t score from open play.

  13. Chances of finishing over 20 points ahead of the scum?

I would prefer Everton to lose the semi final as a safety net but I reckon we’ll get European footy regardless 😉

  14. Also anyone think we should go for Pienar from spurs if possible? They got him for 2.5 mil, maybe we could go for something similar…he’d be great and could fit in in so many places in a 4-3-3

Knowing Spurs tho they’d want 20 mil for him 🙄

  17. We’ve been saying it for a while now….Ben Arfa is that rare “make something out of nothing” player that is essential for any top club to have.

I really hope the Ba thing gets explained away after the match. Hopefully he was just upset at his own performance.

  18. ST as fans we do talk about things, do you really think Pards is going to come out in the post match and say that he thinks Ba has a bad attitude ❓ we all seen him said like a wet kipper in the last game when his mate scored

Yep, unlike the last two seasons. cabaye’s long range cracker is the only one I really remember from this year

  22. 279- Well, Cabaye’s stupendous free kick against ManU to start with, and Ba’s unstoppable free kick against West Brom.

  23. the dream lives on lads spurs falling apart, just worried about the mackems catching us with their great new manager 😆 😆 howay fulham

  24. Cabaye against B’burn, Ba against West Brom, Raylor against the scum.

      (Quote)

  25. Yeah, our scoring from free kicks but particularly Corners is quite depressing. Don’t think Cabby, Benny or Raylor are actually that good at them for that matter, but the positioning of the players also has a lot to be desired imo.

  26. Raylor against Scunthorpe too

  27. I’ll get cracking on the match report, then I might write a Mackem baiting article for tomorrow 😉

  28. What a disciplined performance again the defence was the fulcrum upon which this game turned. Well done Pardew for your selections, defensive tactics which was disciplined all game worst result we could have got today was a draw, subs which was brave taking Ba off for Shola and it worked a treat. I said today that this is the sort of game and time we are going to need a midfield goal and yes Ben Arfa proved the man.

Our players of the moment Ben Arfa and Cisse really are doing wonders for this team We are officially fighting for a champions league place the ball is now in Chelsea’s court.

  29. Solano@277 Was he upset at his performance or at being subbed though, his reaction to Pards suggest the latter.
Pards will say everything fine regardless ,but I’m not out for a witch hunt on Ba ,like I said he’s one of me favs ,which is why Iwas so angry to see him act like that. Still we got 12 days to sort out any probs there may be ,hopefully Ba will be back fireing on all cylinders next game. 😉
