Douglas discussions underway?

FC Twente's Douglas
Dutch media outlet Voetbal International claims that discussions between Newcastle United and FC Twente are taking place over the transfer of Brazilian born defender Douglas Franco Teixeira.

Newcastle need to bolster their defence and have been monitoring the 24-year-old for a number of months, with the added bonus being that Douglas is out of contract in the summer.

However this won’t be a free transfer as FC Twente have a one way agreement to extend the contract of the player for another year, so you would have to assume that they will do just that to ensure they make some money on the tough tackling defender, who has been compared in terms of style and stature to Chris Samba, formerly of Blackburn Rovers. A fee of around €5 million will be enough for Steve McLaren to agree to a deal.

Douglas is now a Dutch citizen and is free to represent Holland at international level, although as yet he hasn’t made an appearance for the national side. He is said to be keen on moving to England, and with Newcastle seemingly keen to sign him up perhaps he could get his wish this summer?

He’d be a good signing for us in my opinion. He has a temper on him, as you can see here. He got a six match suspension for this. However he is a good defender, strong, physical and seems made for the Premier League with his 6ft 4in frame and impressive heading ability.

Would you be happy with Douglas?

  1. Hope its a goer Toonsy as Carr & Co willhave done their homework. That sending off was harsh but him and Tiote will mean a mean spine?

    Crackin?

  2. Pardew talked about Demba a little bit in the chronicle.

Pardew told the Chronicle: “Demba was upset when I brought him off as I had just had a go at him about something.

“I was trying to get a reaction from him, if I am honest.

“I want him to be angry and fight.”

    Hope he scores soon, still

  3. Just seen the highlights of Ivanovic essentially punching a Wigan guy in the kidney. So where’s the 3 match ban F.A? Fucking get some justice done.

On topic-I don’t really know much about this Douglas, don’t watch much of the dutch league so is he just a stronger, younger willo? Or better all round or what?

  4. Also-hope he’s grown up a lot since that video. We’ve currently got a good bunch of players who don’t/won’t lose their head, the exceptions maybe being Cabaye/Benny/Ba. Keep it to a few as possible please!

  5. Toonsy ,glad you highlighted his indiscretions as this is my only worry about him .We need someone who is not just good /better than we have but someone who has a cool head on his shoulders too. That said he looks a big strong guy who will hopefully be an assett should he arrive on tyneside.

  6. Newkie @4 Ivanovic ,has to get a retrospective ban for that end off.If the ref says he saw it he’s incompetant at his job ,linesman too for that matter. I can’t see how that can be brushed under the carpet as it would look well dodgy on the part of the FA if nowt is done. We already have people saying the FA favor the top clubs so heres their chance to show parity with all other clubs in the PL.

  7. Toonsy – I think you’ve put the wrong link up for that Voetbal International article. The original story is on here: http://www.vi.nl/nieuws/219081/Newcastle-gaat-vijf-miljoen-euro-bieden-voor-Douglas.htm

Also, I’m not sure that it says that we’re in discussions for him. I don’t speak a word of Dutch but I did a quick google translate and it just seems to say that we’re still interested, which isn’t quite the same thing. Maybe some of your Dutch readers could help out with a proper translation?

  8. Would be happy if we got him, seems like a done deal.

  9. Was that sending off this season?
I thought yes on a free transfer but with a fee of €5m I’m not so sure. I think we could pick one of the boro boys up or a defender who knows the English league better.
That said, I have every confidence that our scouts will get it right again, so if that’s who we get I’m happy with that.

Regarding Ba, I’m never happy to see players react in a negative way, regardless of the reasons. Kick off in the dressing room or at the training ground if you have to but not like that!!

That said, I do think we as fans need to stick behind Ba and show him just why we are the best fans in the world. We need to sing his name during the games and tweet our support to let him know that the fans are behind him. The fact is, regardless of his current form or what may happen in the summer, our current league position is largely thanks to his goals earlier in the season and he needs to know that we are grateful for that.

  10. very unlike newcastle to let potential signings to leak out to the media these days so therefore don’t think it will happen

  11. There appears to be something about this player that has put me off him, for some reason I would prefer if we got someone else. But in Carr we trust eh?

      (Quote)

  12. Kimtoon-exactly, the ref clearly didn’t see it and from what I can tell didn’t have anything to do with it, so it simply has to be a 3 match ban. It doesn’t help of course when Sky Sports seem to have a monopoly on what can be deemed an offence and the like, its essentially them who highlight wrongdoings by continuously showing replays and putting pressure on the FA. Still, least they put Ivanovic’s on there!

That would be interesting…Bosingwa at right back for some of their remaining matches? Gives us a shot

  13. Sharpy@10- Yes plenty of fans singing his name is the way to react I agree. I said on saturday I was really dissapointed at his lack of respect to Pards as he came off but he’s still one of my favs. Toon owe him a huge debt of gratitude for helping get us to our lofty heights ,but he is one of many in a team of grafters and he must remember that too.

      (Quote)

  14. Andy@12 I know what you mean ,he unnerves me a bit too but as you say in Carr &co we must trust.I know the wally rates him very highly and didn’t want him to leave and I believe Ajax were interested in him also. 😉

  15. Chris G….one of the lads who lives in Holland said yesterday that he was watching that prog in Holland and that they had said the Toon had tabled a €5m bid for him 😉

I am watching the football program Voetball international here in holland and they have just said Newcastle have tabled a bid of 5 million euros for Douglas from FC Twente , these guys usually are 100% right .

      (Quote)

  17. Ah right, cheers Richie, didn’t know that. But as one of the earlier posters pointed out, it does seem odd that this supposed transfer seems to be all over the media when all the others were kept under the radar until they were a done deal. I’d like to believe it’s true but I’m still a bit sceptical.

      (Quote)

  18. Cant say I have seen him play , but if the powers to be decide he is good enough then that is good enough for me! Im sure our recuirtment team at some point or another will bring in a player that flops , but with their recent track record I have complete faith in them.

      (Quote)

  19. Chris G-To be fair though, the higher we get in the league the more attention we attract, plus we’ll presumably be after players with a higher reputation, it gets harder to keep quiet unfortunately.

      (Quote)

  20. Chris – it wouldnt surprise me if it’s Twente who have leaked it to stir up a bidding war for the kid as they know he’s leaving anyway so why would they care. Plus its leaked in the Dutch press rather than ours.
To be fair though, he’s been mentioned as one of our main targets for quite a while now.
My main worry about him would be him settling into the league, but again … In Carr we trust 😉

  21. On the violent conduct topic Kaboul lashed out a kick at a Norwich player yesterday. Is he up before the FA or will they turn a blind eye because it is one of ‘Arry’s boys

      (Quote)

  22. TLR….thought the same thing myself when I seen it, if it had been one of ours he’d have been hung, drawn and quatered already 🙄

      (Quote)

  23. Newkie – that’s a good point. Plus, of course, everybody’s noticed how smart we’ve been in the transfer market, so we’re attracting a lot more attention because of that as well.

Sharpy – yeah, the cynic in me thinks you’re absolutely right about Twente trying to start a bidding war.

If we do get him I don’t think we need to worry too much about him settling into the league. From what I’ve read, our scouts take all sorts of things into consideration when they look at players, including how well they’d be able to adapt to the Premier League. To say the scouts are thorough is probably an understatement – wasn’t Carr recently quoted as saying that by the time they’ve finished they even know which sock the player puts on first in the morning 😀

      (Quote)

  24. Chris G- good point about our scouts. They definately have a knack for signing the type of players that will adapt quickly to the Prem. That’s what seems to set them apart from the youtube scouts like Wise.

It’s not luck like some people think

  25. Would love to get this lad along with Pieters. Those 2 would give us SOO much more defensive strength in depth.

      (Quote)

  26. Douglas is a very talented defender, very strong and very powerful so will be a plus to work alongside Coloccini. Good start really if the rumours are true signing someone like him would mean we are aiming high and not standing still. He is captain material too so if we keep him for the long run we have ourselves a captain when Coloccini retires.

  27. It wouldn’t surprise me if we have several targets still, and this guy is just one of them, or maybe just a decoy.

Other clubs know how well he sign players, so MA and Llambias are obviously going to be thinking of ways to combat this. Not sure if we would go so far as to put in complete dummy bids, but you do get the feeling that Llambias would not be adverse to fighting dirty. 😛

      (Quote)

  28. Never mind complete dummy bids , we make complete dummy signings !

I’m sure Maiga turned up to sign on the dotted line but it turned out to be Papiss Cisse.

      (Quote)

  29. Brian @28 -I think he would have to prove he’s not a hot head and control his temper befor we could consider him captain material .Colo is cap because he leads by example on and off the pitch which is what is important imo. However if he comes and shows good maturity and can tackle without being reckless then yeh why not .

      (Quote)

  30. Sidekick 😆

If there’s one thing about Mike and Dezza, its that they’re completely ruthless. As Maiga showed, pretty sure we invented a reason not to sign him despite essentially tapping him up because Cisse became avaliable-great businesses sense but I do feel slightly for Maiga and the club.

Same business with Hughton. Complete ruthlessness, but it seems to have worked, so far ….

      (Quote)

  31. @Kim Toon – Most players these days are hot headed though and can be proven to be very influencial especially as a captain status. Showing that extra effort/passion to win can influence your team more. Yeah Coloccini takes every slower than most captains he seems more quiet but Nolan and Shearer are examples of players who were captains with hot heads they all make mistakes but I see what you mean with Douglas he does take things over handed most of the time but he is still young so.

      (Quote)

  32. Brian@33 I understand .I’m just a bit spooked by how many people it took to try and calm him down ,but as you say he’s young and can and will learn .What you don’t need in a settled well disciplined unit is a loose cannon just look at Balotelli and how much he has damaged Man city ,for all his goals they have a better win percentage without him in the team! . The one good thing is Pards is a seemingly good man manager as seen in Benny .Back in France he was seen as being unmanagable but Pards has brought out the best in him and we are reaping the benefit now.Tiote is another hothead who seems much more in control of late too.

      (Quote)

  33. Newkie saw the Ivanovic incident mentioned on Sky no mention of any action being taken also Kaboul kicking out at a Norwich player again no action taken now if it had been a Toon player they would have been banned by now .No Ray Tubbs bashing on about it as he did after the Cabye incident at Brighton in the cup tie

      (Quote)

  34. Douglas would be my number 1 target and would be a beast next to colo, although he will not have a Dutch passport until mid August and has said that he won’t sign until after late August once he is eligible. It is a transfer that if it does happen wont happen until the last few days of the window but will be worth the wait.

      (Quote)

  35. one foot…..I know wiki isn’t the most reliable but that says he got his Dutch passport last November.

      (Quote)

  36. Douglas is a great player. That’s based on the fact that the first thing I did on FIFA 12 was to buy him  He’s a brick wall in every game. Tall and powerful and a certain must-have in the summer. He can certainly header a ball with power aswell. 🙂
