Liverpool’s progression to the FA Cup final means that 6th place in the Premier League is now good enough for Europe, and for us to guarantee 6th place we need four more points.
However this isn’t job done. It’s nice to know that we have the relative security of pretty much knowing that we are going to being Europe, but instead of resting on our laurels we should make hay whilst the sun shines, take the bull by the horns, and try and finish in the final Champions League place instead.
You see we’re level on points with Tottenham right now, and they currently occupy the final Champions League place. Barring some form of miracle where Chelsea manage to beat Barcelona over two games, and then beat either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the final to win the Champions League, it is likely that 4th place will once again be good enough to gain entry into the lucrative Champions League, albeit the qualifying stages of the competition.
It’s important that we have something to play for, and fortunately we have that thanks to our lofty league position, impressive points total and indifferent form of those above and around us.
Personally I think 3rd is out of the question now as Arsenal have, like us, found some form at the right time. Tottenham in 4th and Chelsea in 6th are different though as both look knackered and have lacked consistency in recent weeks.
It’s there for the taking if we can keep our heads and keep on with the attitude of taking each game as it comes. It has served us well so far this season, and still having something to play for could prove vital in the final few weeks of the season.
It’s remarkable really. Just two years ago I was stood ankle deep in male urine at Peterborough’s ground, this is after getting drunk on a boat and speaking to random men in a tent in a field. Now I’m looking at what bizarre country I might end up visiting in Europe.
The question is, what competition will it be in?

Been away for a week and feel dirty for supporting the Pool today…had to take 2 showers. Buzzing that we’re nearly locked in. Can’t wait for the next couple of games.
What I love about this blog is coming back from a week away from a computer and seeing Rod having a blog-versation with himself like he does so frequently. Brings a smile to my face to know that not much changes here and I don’t have to play catch-up as much.

Newcastle United under-18s returned to winning ways and extended their lead at the top of the Premier Academy Group D table with a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday.
Dave Watson’s men headed into the game looking for their first win in three attempts and a Dan Taylor brace and Ryan McGorrigan ensured they returned to Tyneside with three points.
Striker Taylor took his tally to four in his last three games after netting in recent defeats to Manchester United and Leeds.
Taylor had already hit the crossbar for United before he put his side ahead, taking advantage of an error by the Owls ‘keeper midway through the first half.
Winger McGorrigan, who was on target for United in their last visit to Sheffield against Wednesday’s rivals United, then doubled the Magpies’ lead.
The winger put United ahead shortly after the break, collecting a mistimed back pass to make it 2-0.
Wednesday pulled a goal back to ensure a nervy finish against a Newcastle side which welcomed back striker Alex Gilliead.
The striker returned after representing England under-16s at the recent Montaigu Tournament in France, with Gilliead playing in three of the four games.
United held on, however, and secured the three points in the 82nd minute when Taylor finished from close range.
The result moved Newcastle five points clear at the top after Leeds, winners on Tyneside last weekend, played out a 1-1 with Sheffield United.
It takes Watson’s men a step closer towards the four-team play-offs should they be crowned as champions of the Group D table.
