My top-five goals of the season so far

Goal of the season against Bolton?
Firstly, I want to apologise for my long absence. I have been very busy with this being my final year before I head off to University in September. Don’t worry, I still plan to write for this wonderful blog whilst I’m there as I have gained valuable experience writing on here. I am happy to report that I am back to comment on all things Newcastle United!

With the season fast approaching its conclusion, I thought it would be the right time for me to pick five stand-out goals that have been scored during the course of this season. Of course I will be interested to hear if you think there have been any goals that I have missed of my list; it actually took me a very long time to whittle them down to five. There have been so many this season that have been stand-out and I believe it will be very hard to pick a one as Goal of the Season when the Premier League finishes. Anyway, let’s go…

Number 5: First up is Ryan Taylor’s volley against Everton in November. Technically this has to be one of the hardest volleys to do in the game of football. He controls the ball and sets himself up before effortlessly stroking the ball into the back of the net.

Number 4: Next is Yohan Cabaye’s freekick against Manchester United in January. This was a game that showed Newcastle United were capable of beating anybody, including the reigning champions. The team had gained a freekick in the Red Devils half and I honestly expected Ryan Taylor to step up and take it. However it was the former Lille man who guided the ball into the back of the net. It was superb free kick and one of the best goals that I have seen this season.

Number 3: This one may surprise a few of you, but I have picked Jonas Gutierrez’s goal against Wolves to go here. I was actually at this game and the strike from our very own Spiderman is superb, he set himself up before striking the ball powerfully leaving Wayne Hennessey helpless. It was one of the standout goals that I have seen and I was delighted to see Gutierrez score as he doesn’t net that often and gives so much for the team.

Number 2: Now it has been very hard to pick a standout out goal from our number nine, Papiss Cisse. In the end I plumped for his chip against Swansea as it is goal that must have been so hard to achieve. The ball seemed to be hanging in mid air before beating Vorm. It was a wonderful goal from our new striker and as I said before there are so many of his goals during his first few months at the club. There is no doubt that there will be more goals like this from our number nine.

Number 1: Has to be Hatem Ben Arfa’s goal against Bolton Wanderers. Ben Arfa had scored a very similar goal in the FA Cup when the Toon faced Blackburn Rovers. Now this goal has to top that one, he demonstrated his magnificent ability and pace to dodge several Bolton players. It was amazing to see him run at full speed and scared the living daylights out of the defenders and capped a brilliant run with an effortless finish

So there you have my five standout goals so far this season. I hope you enjoy them and I’d be very interested to hear which goals would be in your own top five so far this season.

  1. There have been quite a few this season really. The on against Blackburn in the Cup for Ben Arfa was a cracker, but his goal against Bolton was better in my opinion.

Cisse’s finish was fantastic. It was like slow motion.

Other than that I can’t really disagree with any of it. Some of the goal against West Brom away were good because of the pace and incisiveness, but other than that I’ll just say nothing and watch them all again πŸ™‚

  2. Nice one Zoe, and welcome back.
My no1 would have to be Cisse’s sublime chip at swansea.
The reverse slow mo angle is just breath taking.
    Love it.

  3. No need to apologise Zoe…just don’t let it happen again πŸ˜‰

Cisse’s v Swansea was awesome….unless you’re a mackem as some of them reckon he didn’t mean it 😯 If true I can only imagine he meant to fall over whilst putting it out for a throw in πŸ™„ πŸ˜†

  4. I’m with James. Ba’s volley with the balling coming over him was beautiful as well. Haha, probably should have done a top 10

  5. I know it’s not as obvious as others but I just loved cisses headed goal against Liverpool πŸ™‚ probably would’ve had cabayes a bit higher myself. Says a lot that were all leaving out so many good goals like cabaye at the weekend, ben arfa against arsenal, a certain goal against sunderland etc etc.

Nice to have you back Zoe πŸ™‚

  6. All of the goals listed were lucky against the run of play due to a lack of possesion types of goals… I can’t believe how unlucky the other teams were that they went in… πŸ™‚

  7. Cisse’s goal with the outside of his foot from a cross from Jonas (can’t rember who it was against) was better than the chip… he was running paralel to the goal with a defender up his arse…. it is not easy to score with a defender up there that’s for sure πŸ™‚

  8. No Dub.. that was a left foot half volley… not the one I am talking about.. πŸ™‚

  9. Zoe good to have you back and good luck for the future.
Yeah it has been a hard one as you said there have been a fair few top class goals this season. But I would be happy enough with your 5.
I think we could have done a cracking top 5 of Bennys and Cisses alone.

  10. Do I detect a slight change in Pardews stance here:
β€œI have played in a very good Crystal Palace team which finished third in this division and I had a very good side at West Ham, but it did not have the camaraderie of this group,”

β€œI hope that means the players we have got all want to stay and we can do it all again next year, because clubs will look at these players now and try and take them off our hands.”

β€œIt might be that belief and love they have for each other which will keep them here.” β€œI am hoping that we get to such a point where there is not really many places above where they can go. That is what we really want.”
Sounds good to me Alan. You just gotta get the owner and chairman onboard with that too.

This is true. None of our wins count unless we have more possession πŸ˜‰

Some good words today from Tiote.
β€œAs soon as we start to think we have done it, we will go in bad form and lose one game which could be important. That will happen.” β€œFor now I am focused on the Wigan game, all of the team are.”

β€œWe are not thinking about Champions League.” β€œWe talked about doing every thing we could to win and that is what we have to do for the next four games as well.”
Alan Pardew really has wor Lads feet planted firmly on the ground.

  13. Good choice of goals Zoe. There has been some crackers this season both team goals and individual brilliance. A favourite of mine is Jonas’s goal away at Wolves. One of my favourite players and secured the first away win my laddie had seen live after many disappointments on our travels

  14. A few lucky wins against lower quality teams like 5under1and means nowt.
Just wait ’til we have to play teams like manure………..
    ………oh wait πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

  15. Not sure if any of those goals count as we have played anyone yet.

For me its Cisse’s goal against Villa. Pure class!

  16. sorry to re-post i put this on the wrang thread.
Been thinking about the possibility of Spurts coming in for Alan Pardew after redknob has left for the England job in the summer.
    Could we fend them off?
Would AP want to go there?
    worrying. 😯

  17. Zoe -I can’t argue with no.1 spot ,Pure class from Benny ,my choice too. To be fair we have seen some brilliant goals from the lads this season .

BB@23- I don’t see Pards wanting away to Spurs ,he’s already said he wants to finish the job he’s started here. The only way I could envisage him wanting away is if come the summer Ash sells two or three big names from the team and weakens us too much to compete next year.

  18. Dont see Pardew leaving, why would he? Start of next season we will arguably have the better squad if droopy leaves. If he leaves you can wave goodbye to Modric, Adebayor will cost too much, Bale could go to Barca or Real and their CBs are aging at an alarming rate!

That’s a difficult job! Why would he go there when he can’t stop saying how much he bloody loves this place! 😎
