Game On! Wigan v Newcastle – Toon unchanged again

Game On at Wigan
Welcome one and all to our ‘Game On’ article which today will see us travel to Lancashire to do battle with Wigan Athletic.

Around 4,500 Newcastle fans will be present at the DW Stadium this afternoon, and it would have been more had we had a larger allocation of seats.

Unfortunately the request for extra seats was turned down down, which I don’t really have an issue with. I mean why should Wigan hand any advantage to us when they have their own agenda to worry about? So 4,500 it is then, which is still not shabby at all and I can vouch from personal experience that those travelling will have an excellent day regardless of the result!

I’m expecting a tough game today. Wigan may have lost last weekend but they’ve been in great form these past few weeks and have given themselves a real chance of staying up when it looked as though they were certs for relegation. Wins at Arsenal and Liverpool along with a home victory over Manchester United have helped their cause no end.

In contrast Newcastle are looking to strengthen their hold on fourth place and know that a win would see them go six points clear of fifth placed Tottenham and seven points clear of sixth placed Chelsea, both of whom play tomorrow.

For more in depth analysis and preview of the match, why not try reading statto’s Stat Attack or my match preview. Both provide statistical analysis ahead of the game, with news of any injuries, potential team news and landmarks that can be achieved through the game.

Team news will be added below as and when it becomes available so keep your eyes peeled. Also keep your eyes peeled for any decent streams of the match and share them with your fellow NUFC fans if you like. Unfortunately it’s not on the box anywhere other than overseas so share the love people.

Howay the lads!

  1. Simpson on the second goal, stopped still and watched the Wigan lads run in. Appalling.

  2. We were unlucky not to score with cisse and HBA. Our defence let us down today. Todays game required patience but also required a clean sheet from us problem is no matter how well played you can concede an unlucky goal we did that. Pardew did not know what to do from there and it went down hill.

That said Wigan were fire today we could not compete with what we saw today. Hell I wish we played like what I saw from Wigan today their off the ball tactics were like Barcelona chase the ball forget about falling into position and in a set amount of time we must win the ball back else fall back into position. Wigan executed that brilliantly credit to them where credit is due. If they can continue that and survive next season watch out for them.

  3. Lace-he was stationary and a great pass was played through to Caldwell or whoever it was who scored? I can’t remember, still do you want him to be running backwards before a pass has been played?

Di Santo’s goal? Really? Why should Simmo steam out of defence to close him down when Tiote was up with our forwards and just strolling back towards goal. Though I think that was the fourth one…dunno which you mean.

Anyway I can’t be fecked arguing anymore, whenever we get absolutely raped as a team it all comes back to one or two players, madness.

  4. That’s football. Sometimes you can score on every shot at goal and sometimes you miss by inches or hit the post. When it goes in you are described as clinical, when it doesn’t you are called wasteful. Just one of those days.

And sometimes you get a dodgy penalty in added time – heh heh. At least last week was a scream.

  7. No way we are ready for CL playing like that.
Perhaps we should just be happy with what we’ve achieved so far this season.
could be worse, we could be mackems. (botton half 😆 )

  8. Nutmag – we have no pressure for the next game fella.
The very worst we will finish 6th. 😆

  11. Notice how I cleverly changed the subject there befor we fall out with ourselves 😆 Face it lads outplayed by a team of dirty feckers at times and wish we had Moses 🙄 😆

  12. We went out in wrong frame of mind, and looked jaded. Pards changed tactics, and that seemed to be a factor. We made Wigan look like Barca. Just like watching Brazil according to the big nosed scouser.

On the plus side, Benny was absolute class. Must keep a hold of him. Its still all set up for the Toon to give it a good go. The rollercoaster hasn’t stopped yet.

  13. Travelled to wigan from Scotland to watch that. I cannot Saul how disappointed i am. Simpson and willo words can’t say how bad you played

      (Quote)

  14. jeez that was poor – we just didnt turn up, presume Pards took Cabaye, HBA off to save them for chelsea

One of those days I suppose and theres been plenty of them in the prem league this season – we’re not out of champions league just yet but its now going to be tougher than ever – shame, especially with **** only drawing

Roll on Weds night, hopefully players will be up for it

  15. We seem to set ourselves up to match wigan rather than play our own game and we just ended up giving the ball away and resorting to hoofball. When we did get back to the passing game last 30 mins we created chances ,hitting the bar /post and possibly could of had 3 or 4 on another day. Also the ref was very bad today he let them get away with far too much imo.

  16. The similarities between the spuds and wigan matches are there for all to see.
Get stuck into us early and we panic and fall apart.
Once again no leaders on the pitch to galvanise the lads and kick ***.
    Ah well bring on chelski.

  17. Also we didn’t get to grips with their 3-4-3 set up and lost the midfield
Still got lessons to learn, AND we will.

  18. The one day I am glad to be in work and miss it. To lose is upsetting. To get battered is criminal!

Such a shame, let’s just hope spurs lose and this gives us a huge kick up the **** for the last games. 4th is still on despite this mauling by a team who recently beat arsenal away and man united

  19. BB@398- Spot on we always start off slow passing it around and getting a feel for the game but that can backfire like today .They came flying out the traps and we were totally unprepared for it. 🙁

  20. What was Mike Dean smoking? Blowing up for some perfectly good tackles.
The standard of refereeing has been diabolical this season. This is a young man’s game, played at a young man’s pace, with a young man’s speed of reaction. So why are referees so old, and even overweight in some cases? I’ve never seen that young lass running the line get one wrong yet. She was right on her toes throughout. You never see the old guys looking so alert.

  21. To lose to Wigan who have been in brilliant form of late is no big deal. But to get battered like we did is just bad crack……

Never saw the game like, so just reading the crack on the blog….

Champs League is still there, gotta give it our best shot, even a draw today would have done…

  22. Ha Ha questions being asked how come Norwich’s pitch is so green considering there is a hose pipe ban down there.

      (Quote)

  23. Kim Toon – but why were we unprepared for their onslaught. surely it was obvious.

  24. Despite this disappointing defeat, nothing can be taken away from this stellar season we’re having. Expecting a much more improved performance against chelsea. 😎

      (Quote)

  25. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew: “We just didn’t match their intensity. Forget shape, systems and so on, intensity is everything in football. For the first two goals we were really lose and disorganised. It was not until half-time that we got back to our level and showed discipline.

“We were honest in the second half, showed pride and at Chelsea on Wednesday we will show the intensity we’re used to showing and give them a far stronger game. If you were here today you’d have to say we got beat by the better team.”

      (Quote)

  26. Forget shape and systems! Doesn’t matter how much intensity you have if you have no shape and system! What was Santon doing on the right, Alan?

      (Quote)

  27. AP says he will make sure the intensity is much higher against chelsea even if he has to play himself 😯
    😆

      (Quote)

  28. TOONSY if you put match highlights up can we just have the two cisse effords and miss the rest 😀 😀 😀

  29. a think judas is finished at cesspool. They just dont work when he plays.
Someone will pick him up for a bargain price in the summer, if they can pay his wages.
A shame because that rules out Gateshead 😯 😆
