Match highlights (well, goal highlights anyway) of the 2-0 victory over Chelsea last night, featuring two stunning strikes from Papiss Demba Cisse.

Have you seen a better brace of goals this season? I know I haven’t. People are quite rightly gushing over the second, but for me the first one was the most impressive of the two. To tee it up like that with one foot and hit the ball with the other, before it’s even touched the ground, giving Petr Cech no chance of saving it was something special.

It was a great result, a fantastic and unexpected result that now leaves us with a strong chance of finishing fifth and leaves us in a position to capitalise on any mistakes Tottenham or Arsenal may make in the run in, providing we keep looking after ourselves of course!

Plaudits should be handed out after that performance. They restored the pride after Wigan, and then some. I’m just left wondering who will get the credit for it as it seems the players get the acclaim when we win, yet the manager takes the blame when we lose. That’s how it seems to me anyway.

Howay the lads!

Yup…. Ci-teh will have it hard on Sunday. ;-)

Off topic – bin dippers post losses of nearly £50m over the last financial year and blame it on the plans to move/redevelop stadium …. yeah ok then … nowt to do with £35m on a striker who can’t hit a barn door !!!

I thought Chelski’s best man suited the yellow shirt. Tiote’s instant yellow for me was a sign of foreboding that the ref was going to be a proper ‘homer’. That and the fact that he couldn’t bring himself to be a bit miffed at the casual thuggery the blues sprayed around. Makes the win even more enjoyable though. Apparently Tiote wanted to continue playing, but the Doc said .no way!’. That explains why there were a dozen medics tying him down then

The 1st goal was sublime. He received the pass on his right foot, chipped it up and volleyed it with his left.
    Unbelievable Tekkers. :-D

God I hope we don’t have any bank-busting offers come in for Cisse this summer!

Of out big guns that are supposedly being monitored by the big boys, I can’t see how we’d cope with the loss of Cisse, Ben Arfa and/or Krul.

Think we could replace Ba or Tiote, but heaven help us if we didn’t replace Ba and Cisse got injured!

    blip says:

BTW, anyone else beginning to worry less about Santon? Defensively he’s looked a bit of a liability, but he’s slowly getting there. There’s certainly potential!

Apparently the management do see him long-term as a RB (if Luke Edwards at the Chronicle is to be believed), and think he looked a bit more comfortable there myself. He is painfully reliant on his right foot though – could do with improving his left, just to make his runs a little less predictable!

    Tsunki says:

Blip – starting to warm to Santon, pulling his skills together in a better way that his RB counterpart imo. he will be a better player than simmo methinks. I know his right shoulder dips into the penalty area are easily spotted, but strangely enough they seemed to work, even though they could see him coming form a mile off! He just needed a result at the end but he’ll get there. I also think his forward running is being covered by the rest of the back line much more effectively this game, which is important because him and simmo have the tendency to leave big holes for wingers to run in to. Perch plugged the right hand side so if simmo is contract-stalling, I say perchinho has a starting spot for citeh. Also loved the goal-line clearance, means he is putting himself about more and working harder, more aware of when to get back to defending.

  12. 12
    Sharpy17 says:

On topic – The defence took a bit of a hammering at the weekend and rightly so, but last night, they were solid again and Colo and Perch coming in deserve a mention.
What was pleasing was that the team showed desire and kept their heads. I had huge concerns when Tiote was receiving treatment that with such a long stoppage reality may have kicked in to the players. They may have thought ‘shit, were 1-0 up at Chelsea’ but not with this team. Love the fact that Tiote wanted to play on as well – though wonder if that was just to put a foot through Mikel (maybe that’s just me)

Love Ba, and pleased he is still playing with a smile on his face, even when he hit the bar.
Cisse is just deadly, he hasn’t scored a boring tap in yet

I just pray that we keep this team together. Can live with loosing Simpson, Guthrie, Williamson or similar fringe players but we have to keep our spine in tact and build on that. If that is the case, we could well be a major force next season.

Players must be ringing their agents around the world saying, get me in that team!!!

  13. 13
    blip says:

Agreed with 11 – Perch was outstanding last night. Think RB might (once more) be his position. He’s a good DM, but requires the more attacking players to do a lot – there isn’t that ’1 forward, 1 back’ dynamic that Tiota and Cabaye have.

Just been reading some of the Chelsea blogs and what a nice bunch they’re being about us.

The general chat is ‘I was wondering what all the hype was, and now I know’, ‘I hope they get top 4 – regardless of what happend in munich’, ‘They were the better team’ etc etc.

I don’t think I’ve read a more balanced bunch of articles, no bitterness at all and just full of praise.

Mind you, there are a few dicks claiming Cisse should be a Chelsea player as if it’s their rite.

“What I want to fucking know…Is how in the hell did Cisse flying under the radar??.We are known for signing french players, or players from the french league. Where the fuck was our scouting team?….How did newcastle snag him for 9 milli??

But we dropped 50 million euros ( 70 million dollars) on Torres?

Cisse is supposed to be in blue!!!!!!!!….Drogba should be passing the torch to him…Cisse has chelsea written all over him!….You saw the way he played at the Bridge!…”

I left him a little reply just clearing up the totally ignorant statements he made. Senegalese, not french. German League, not French. Idiot.

Plus why would he want to move to a team below him?

I watched the highlights on Sky last night, which took me about 4 hours.

Two absolutely ridiculous strikes from Cisse.

I’m sure about 8 or 9 of his goals for us this season have been spectacular from a fair distance out, which have been stark contrast to what I was expecting to be honest. His Bundesliga goals I remember watching on a yeetube clip seemed mostly all poached in and around the box. I was expecting a bit of a Darren Bent, but got a Matt Le Tissier.

    …can’t complain like.

Not sure if I’m right or not, but when people are talking about big bids coming in the summer for Cissie, does a player not have to be at a club for 12 months before he can move?

  22. 22

Simon – He could leave he just cant play for 3 clubs within a 12month spell. So realistically he’d have to wait until Jan before he could play if someone bought him.

Aussie last weekend could’ve been nothing other than a blip really, given our season’s form and table position. We’ve been reasonably consistent most season, which is amazing to watch as a Newcastle fan. The fantastic thing for me is we always look like scoring now, with the attacking players we have. Tsunki says:

    Premandup @30 – for me:

    1/ HBA v Bolton
    2/ Cisse #2 v Chelsea
    3/ Ba V Man Utd

2/ & 3/ both speculative strikes that sort out a true instinctive striker from one who needs to be taught his craft. Yes, folks, we have TWO of these.

I chose the HBA V Bolton one because Blackburn one had element of fortune just near the end when he cut inside at the post. In the Bolton one it’s the fact that, without breaking his speed he dinked the ball over the last challengers’ foot and put the ball exactly where the keeper knew he was going to put it, but did anyway :)

Where’s he been saying that Ice? Mind you, everyone is gona be talking about Cisse now. It was Ba a couple of months back. I’m looking forward to the day when we’re an established top 6 team again. The big boys hardly ever get there best players linked with moves away. Understandably.

Benny vs. Blackburn no.1 for me. Not because of the actual shot at the end but because of the individual build-up play that went into it.

I’m far less worried about losing players now. Guaranteed European football and a huge resurgence of popularity and reputation as an entertaining, well-supported team that enjoys its job.

Then add the background of what happened to Judas and Torres, and I’m not sure many players will be seeing any greener grass around them. We may lose some – but it’s nothing like last year. More will be trying to get in.

  58. 58

He’s only saying what everyone else knows there though Ice….

“”It’s impossible if they want to go, it’s no good keeping them. I think there may be an offer Newcastle can’t refuse for Cisse coming in.”

It happens. I’d probably say the same thing if asked.I don’t think he’ll want to leave though. For that matter I don’t think any of our best players will want to. Why would they? Best league in the world, European football, top stadium and fans, financially secure etc etc…

    aussie magpie fan says:

Rodz, from what I have read, Cisse really had no idea he was coming to Newcastle.. He left all the details to his agent. The first he heard was when he was told to fly to Newcastle for a medical. So saying that he wouldn’t want to leave might not hold much water..

    Rodzilla says:

Maybe not Aussie, but he’s here now. I just see no reason for him to want to move. He knows what the No9 shirt means up here, he’s first choice and idolised already. 65. 65
    Whumpie says:

There are a couple of posts referring to Willo, Guthrie and Perchinio as ‘fringe’ players. Can we really describe them as such now? As far as I’m concerned they’ve been a key part of our most successful season in a decade and I’d be absolutely gutted to see any of them leave. For me, they’re up there with any of the others, fighting for a place – even Saylor will have a tough job getting his place back from Willo now, and that can only be healthy.

I’m so happy for those three in particular – from the grief they got (“Championship player”, was it?) to last night’s stuff-of-dreams. Utterly brilliant. Oh, and English.

  66. 66

Fair call Rodz… anyway it has certainly quietened down all the Demba BA will be off in the summer talk. Watching the game, I couldn’t help but think that Cisse is full filling all the promise that Oba Martins never quite showed during his time with us.. they both seem to have that sense of the unexpected about them but Cisse seems to pull it off…

  68. 68
    kimtoon says:

I thought every one put in a steller performance last night ,stand outs were Cisse , Tiote ,Perch ,Ba all but scored 100% commited as always and was really pleased with Santon .o.k he made a couple of sloppy passes but is coming on quicker than Enrique did and made a great goaline clearence too.Pards played it perfectly last night the two upfront were a menace to the Chelsea backline all night .Oh yeah and Mikel should of got a red for that elbow as it was an act of revenge on Tiote for sure .Ivanovich did his reputation no good either his elbow into Bas back was plain spiteful and not the first time hes ever had a sly dig at a player.

  69. 69
    Moreno says:

He is just a natural clinical finisher from anywhere in or around the box. Not even around the box to be honest after that second, anywhere on the field. In fact Tim Krul messaged me and says Cisse scored one from the changing rooms at training the other day.

He is a wizard with the outside of that boot

  70. 70
    aussie magpie fan says:

I’ve heard you have scored in the change rooms as well Moreno :-) :-)
Agree about the outside of his boot.. I rate his effort against Norwich as one of his best..

  71. 71
    Rodzilla says:

Martins   …now there’s a frustrating player. He’d shoot from the halfway line. I think Cisse is so much more composed and actually thinks before he shoots, rather than head down, nosebleed, belt it as hard as you can and if it’s on target it’s going in.

Ah, let’s not complain. Sounds like the Chelski fans are taking this one on the chin, so let’s just accept that Tiote plays his game his way and sometimes his opposite number reciprocates. Kim, I saw Santon’s goal line clearance. Quality. We seem to have made a fair few of them this season, more than usual I’m sure. Some quality defensive coaching going down.

With Regards to Mikel, it’d be nice if he got done for that, but it was pretty much tit for tat. Unfortunately for Tiote he came off worse. Mr T plays hard and is always gona piss players off. I think he’s ace though.

Love those highlights…I am just curious, I’ve been to England about 4 times…various parts of the country, including a trip to Newcastle…what part of the country is that accent from? Very difficult for me to make out what they were saying…something about fantastic strikes and goal of the season…but couldn’t catch it all.

Whumpie ,Rod -Yeah fair play Tiote does dish it out but I don’t think he ever intends to harm he’s just a guts and glory tackler .The Mikel tackle had real intent in it and there is a subtle difference there I think. Would we be so forgiving if Tiote had ended up in hospital after it and missed the next game I wonder.

Norcal, it sounds like drunken Scottish to me mate ;-)

Kim, yeah I hear ya. I don’t think Tiote is deliberately malicious, he just sees opposing players as skittles.

Kimtoon-exactly. I thought Mikel deserved a yellow for that. Of course if an elbow is deemed as being used with intent its a red. I’m not so sure how much he intended it, but he wasn’t going for the ball and in my eye thats a booking.

What pissed me off was, Bosingwa I think? Hacking Jonas out after he’d skipped past two players and was running into the box. No card. Then cabaye puts a hand on Ramires and immediately lifts it off, Ramires collapses in a heap. Yellow card.

I just want consistency tbh

NorCal Toonfan – If you mean the highlights at the top of the page? They aren’t in English. Sounds like Ukranian or Polish or something, eastern european anyway.

I gotcha…I should have made myself more clear. I just found it funny that they only highlight available was one in a Slavic language. Seriously couldn’t find anything in perhaps the Queen’s English? Cracked me up.

Norcal, I did legitimately think it was exceptionally crude Scottish for a few seconds. It’s sounds similar to a Glaswegian after a bottle of whisky.
