Out with a whimper! Everton 3-1 Newcastle

Pienaar strikes first
Newcastle played Everton this afternoon knowing that they needed to win to stand any chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

Well now I actually wonder if they did know? You see the performance today was weak to say the least, which was unexpected when you consider what could have been on offer.

As it stands a win for us wouldn’t have mattered anyway, and fifth is still a mighty fine effort from the lads after 38 games, but to give such a disappointing performance in the first half is difficult to take. Everton shouldn’t have anything taken away from them as they were excellent in that first period and gave us no room to do anything in.

Goals from Steven Pienaar and Nikica Jelavic were enough to give Everton a deserved 2-0 lead at half-time although I still maintain we made it easy for Everton to press the game by failing to play our own.

The second half arrived and Newcastle were much improved. Sylvain Marveaux and Ryan Taylor replaced Davide Santon and James Perch and almost immediately you could see that the changes worked in our favour, although in fairness it wasn’t hard to improve from what was a dire first half performance.

Papiss Cisse missed pretty much an open goal, Hatem Ben Arfa scuffed a shot wide and Demba Ba shot straight at Tim Howard as the visitors pressed and probed for a way back into the game.

However it was Everton who scored the next, and decisive, goal when John Heitinga made the most of a static Mike Williamson and Fabricio Coloccini and easily headed home from six yards out.

Brief hope was restored shortly after as the visitors pulled one back courtesy of a Tony Hibbert own goal, but no comeback was on the cards this time and the game petered out.

Everton were impressive today and the result made it nine games without defeat for David Moyes’ side. They were confident and that showed, and in truth there was only going to be one winner in this contest.

Which makes you wonder why Tim Cahill had to act like a knob right at the end and earn himself a red card AFTER the final whistle. He lost his head but then the same must be said for Yohan Cabaye who was on the egde of losing it all game and actually did when a ballboy failed to do his job properly and give Cabaye the ball back.

A fine season has ended on a sour note for us, but we’ll be back, especially if players like Sylvain Marveaux can stay fit. Considering today was his first appearance in six months he done rather well and showed some great skill and vision. Unfortunately it came to nothing in the end but it was promising all the same.

In summary, what a season!

Everton: Tim Howard, Tony Hibbert, John Heitinga, Phila Jagielka, Leighton Baines, Darron Gibson, Phil Neville, Leon Osman, Steven Pienaar, Maraouane Fellaini, Nikica Jelavic

Subs: Jan Mucha, Denis Stracqualursi, Tim Cahill, Magaye Gueye, Seamus Coleman, Ross Barkley, Sylvain Distin

Newcastle: Tim Krul; James Perch, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, Davide Santon, Hatem Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye, Cheik Tiote, Jonas Gutierrez, Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse

Subs: Rob Elliot, Shane Ferguson, Ryan Taylor, Dan Gosling, Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan, Shola Ameobi

P.S – Troy Stavers, you are now banned from attending away games!

  1. Best team won today, maybe they’re goals had an element of luck but that’s football, we’ve had some “luck” too, but Everton’s win was nowt to do with luck, they won because they were the better team on the day.
As I said on the match thread, Cabaye was well out of order and he really can’t complain if the FA do take further action…. and they should!

  2. Like Pardew says, we have something to build on now.
    In Carr we trust. 😉

Alright I’ll give you Baines, swap Santon to RB and have Baines at LB, but Rodwell is often injured and Jonas is such a hard worker and good at supporting the defence aswell as having that incredible ability of running into 2/3 opposition players and either coming out the other side with the ball or getting a free-kick afteer drawing a foul. 😉

      (Quote)

  4. Ice yeah but I don’t think we need a 1st 11 striker just a backup one that can score more than Best and Shola 😀 I meant 1st teamers really. 😉
Oh and I think Cabaye missed a chance there for not saying sorry for that but then maybe thats to stop other focusing on it.

      (Quote)

  5. I would take Jellyman any day for our team ,cracking striker imo ,but I wouldn’t swap him for Cisse though.

      (Quote)

  6. The only toon player to get in the everton team is cisse . Coz u had a lucky season doesn’t mean your better than us we finish top 7 every year u will prob end up in bottom half of the league next season . We over achieve every season that’s all I ever hear but with 8 top 7 finishes in the last 10 seasons I would say u carnt overachieve for that long

      (Quote)

  7. Dave ,it would be nice if he could buy the lad a kit and boots to make amends . He may well do that in private like . I think it was a moment of madness as he doesn’t strike me as a bad sort really .

      (Quote)

  8. DAVE ime sorry i dont agree you say get defence sorted pardew said hes bringing in a c/h,that means 4/c/h,imo we need a good striker in not as back up but someone whos going to push ba and cisse and fill in while they are away at anc which could be up to two months before there ready to get to speed in p.l.we cannot go that long without a good front man

      (Quote)

  9. yup have to go with Ice on that one.
Ferkin ACon is a pain in the ***. But we must have a contingency plan this yr.

  10. Ice @85 Spot on there.

@83 are you a Mackem in disguise ? sound like a bitter Mackem to me. Most evertonians got more class than that what you have written there.

  11. Very disappointing finish but I guess we’re getting used to that. There also seems to be the matter of a lack of fighting spirit…I’m not sure what it is. We’ve salvaged the odd draw here and then, but still never come from a goal down to win under Pardew….Its a testament that we see so many games out once taking the lead for sure, but we still seem to lack that belief that we can turn a game around, we usually end up playing worse as the game goes on.

Luckily today we had a real game changer-Marveux, who I thought was superb after being out of action for so long, fair play to him. Couple more changes and a bit of teamwork and maybe we can become as jammy as Manure and nick wins in half our matches when we don’t deserve it 😆

  12. TOON – The league does not lie mate. Newcastle are better than Everton. Fact. If you want to go on past seasons, we can perhaps compare how many times each side has competed in the Champion’s League or European football over the last 15 years? Pointless talking about the past. It’s irrelevant and has no bearing on how good a team currently is.

That said, Everton in my mind are a very good side thanks to David Moyes. If he had a bit of cash your boys would be u there with us pushing the top 4. Cash in on Rodwell and a couple of astute signings will see Everton on the up… Similar to us with Carroll… 😉

  13. BB/KIMTOON of coarse your right its a no brainer, just sometimes dave nods off 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  14. out of the team that beat us today I’d only take Jelavic, the rest we have better or will buy better. Everton don’t look like scoring without Jelavic..

Aye Ice, we defo need a decent striker as backup, rightback and a decent centerhalf + keep the big players

      (Quote)

  15. Toon @ 83 your right about people saying you’s overachieved but you made a muppet of yourself when you said Cisse is the only player to get into your team 😆 and they say Geordies are deluded 😀
Ice I think the chances of us bringing in a striker to challenge the BA’s is as much as Batty giving you £100 a week payrise, it just won’t happen, if we can allow Willo to cover as a main CB for several months then we will allow Shola and Best to cover for the Acon. we will need a RB aswell as a CB

      (Quote)

  16. If you look at Everton befor Jelavic they couldn’t really buy a goal , now he’s come in and started bagging a few the confidence has spread through the team and they all fancy their chances scoring !. you can have all the top players in the world but confidence is a very precious commodity ,without it you are sunk. 😉

      (Quote)

  17. DAVE we will have to agree to dis-agree,by the way best is leaveing its all left to good old shola 🙂

      (Quote)

  18. Dave @92-Though I agree with ice that we need a decent forward I also feel you are right in that they won’t blow the budget on anyone . If we lose Best and obviously Peter plus Smith off the wage bill you would hope for someone pretty decent to come in up front though.

      (Quote)

  19. Ice @ 95 well we have to be grateful for small mercies because if Best goes they will have to replace him, so we have a chance of getting a striker that can score 😀

      (Quote)

  20. Kim and Ice if we keep the Ba’s there is more chance of Colo getting a baldy than us getting a striker that would compete with them 2, IMO it just wont happen the sameway Batty wouldn’t give Ice a payrise 😆

      (Quote)

  21. @Mark – so did I imagine us hitting the post today? Was that not Osman?
Once again try watching the game, or see past your own team before judging the opposition. ‘No one looks like scoring’ yet we won 3-1 (1 goal by Jelavic) makes your statement look patantly ridiculous.

      (Quote)

  22. Dave do you not think Ba will go then . I reckon he’s a gonner and probs Tiote too ,just got a horrid feeling Mike will cash in now we aint got CL spot.

      (Quote)

  23. Kim – when has mashley ever cashed in on player sales?
Think you’ll find he still hasn’t taken a penny out of the club yet.
If stupid over the top offers come in, then surely he would be doing the club a disservice not to atleast consider the positives of such a deal.
    maybe.

      (Quote)

  24. KIMTOON i agree they wil both go even if we had C.L, they would have gone imo, jabba will cash in somewhere to bring players in,and we get nowt from ba so!

      (Quote)

  25. MB
Think he’s suggesting that Jelavic has inspired confidence in the team, and he’s usually involved with the goals scored.

      (Quote)

  26. Kim I have believed we would lose Ba from the interview he done stating his desire to play for PSG, but I was making the point that if we did keep him 😉

      (Quote)

  27. Anyhoo, just been looking at the Fantasy football thing that Toonsy started up. Dont recognise 90% of them peeps like.
    How did yous do ?
I finished 45th 👿 Not bad for my first attempt, but not as bad as Liam southern Toon @190 and Toonsy @186 😳
    Better luck next season.

      (Quote)

  28. Ice
Don’t worry, when Ba goes Carr has a junior Messi that nobody’s noticed yet lined up for Xisco and a packet of crisps 😆

      (Quote)

  29. Completely agree that we need somebody to kick the lads up the **** when we are down, really frustrating to watch a team that aren’t trying (wigan 1st half most notably) but all in all great season. And cabaye did make a right knob of himself today

      (Quote)

  30. I think Demba Ba is the most likely to leave, but not sure who would come in for Tiote. Surely he would only go to a CL team, so maybe manure 😕 ❓

      (Quote)

  31. Haha
I finished 161st, Some of my pre-season choices were brilliant some not-so…
Had hart in goal 😎 had colo and baines in defence 😎 had cabaye, tiote and valencia in midfield 😎 But I was also playing G.Johnson and T.Bramble 😕 , maxi rodriguez 😕 and Suarez and Sturridge 😕 I also had Bale, Paddy Kenny, Luiz and Odemwingie in the subs 😳

      (Quote)

  32. We will not cash in on Ba or Tiote.

Ba is on contract until 2014 but has a buy out clause . Nufc trying to come to financial agreement with Ba to remove that clause.

Tiote is on contract until 2017.

If either player leaves this Summer it will be with the player demanding a transfer and not Nufc cashing in .

      (Quote)

  33. BB
They probably need him the most, as their CM is pretty ****, but with the Chelsea clear-out in the summer they’ll probaby make a 20-25m bid to replace obi mikel and essien(both are realllllly ****).

      (Quote)

  34. BB ,the point I was trying to make is we were more likely to hang on to said players if we could offer CL football .Now its clear we can’t if a silly offer for Tiote lands on mikes desk he aint gonna say no to it . Did I say he’d taken money out the club ?. If we get silly money then we can hopefully get 3 or 4 in to replace 1 or 2 we sell , that’s cashing in ,in my book much like we did with Carroll .

      (Quote)

  35. well thats fair nuff then. If a player wants away so much that he submits a transfer request, then good luck to him. But ashley cant sell players unless they want to go too.

      (Quote)

  36. Liverpool offered Carroll £80k per week and Nufc refused to match it.

Carroll put in a transfer request cos he had a lot more loyalty to the money than Nufc.

      (Quote)

  37. New season starts 18th Aug. I’m guessing pre season about a month or so before that. Transfer window opens 1st July, so only 6 and a bit weeks to get through. 😛
    Anyone for cricket 😯

      (Quote)

  38. thats what i keep saying its all down to money, club want the money,or player wants more money, way of the world sad but true 🙁

      (Quote)

  39. I have to agree with Dave and MB, Cabayes actions today were a disgrace. It’s not the first time we’ve seen his hot headedness this season, but theres a huge difference between kicking out at an opponent and pushing a kid!!
The ref did take action so FA couldn’t punish him but could reprimand him, but the club could take action. However, I would much sooner see Cabaye take his own action, by contacting the childs family to apologies properly.
I don’t believe Cabaye is a bad man who goes round beating kids up for fun, but he should be given the chance to do the right thing.

As for the game, we were very poor and Spurs and Arsenal handled the pressure better for me.
But we have had a brilliant season overall, just pray we keep hold of the spine of our team and build on.

  40. Just done an article for 1st time in ages. Look out for it lads and lasses! Toonsy has beena bloody workhorse of late. Good on him, especially with the new arrival. I got a new little’un too and a new house to boot so time is a precious commodity these days.

Proud of the Toon this season. Bit rough around the edges, but not half bad for relegation fodder eh?! 😀

      (Quote)

  41. not too fussed about losing ba, he doesnt quite work on the left i think marvaux would be a better shout there, with regards to tiote if we get 20 million for him i will be well pleased as long as we get marvin martin and corgnet, definatly need a centre half as well, i have respect for williamson but he just isnt goof enough if we are to finish in the top 5 next year.

      (Quote)

  42. Big Dave you got Cabeye spot on! I was situated right behind the ball boy when Yohan pushed him which Stunned me, it was bang out of order. He did on the half time whistle come over and shake the lads hand and hug him.

As for the game we played really well and rode are luck at times with lady luck on are side. I thought you Magpies done really well this season exceeding expectations with fine play at times. Oh and best of all we are above the red *****.

    Good luck next season NUFC.

Haha and long may it continue mate!

Kimtoon cheers, been keeping an eye on things with the occasional comment. It’s a nice bunch we have on this site and good to be back in the saddle, albeit not as regularly as before… 😀

      (Quote)

  44. Sorry, nut if anyone saw Cabaye again you would see he just snatched the ball and didn’t push the lad at all.

Now it’s still obviously not the dine thing, but it aint as bad as some are making out and he was straight over at half time to make up to the lad.

      (Quote)

  45. Mersey Blue & Blueshoe you’re both being very magnanimous in regards Cabaye’s over-reaction to the young kid’s apparent cheeky delay in returning the ball. I suspect Cabaye feels pretty sh*t about it now but unfortunately what’s done is done, I only hope the usual suspects in the press & TV don’t blow this all out of proportion as I think Cabaye is a really good player and a decent bloke and hasn’t shown any of the usual chav characteristics normally seen in the likes of Barton, Rooney, Terry etc and more of the Cabaye types of players are welcome in the game in my opinion!
