Clyne on the Tyne?

Clyne on the Tyne?
Newcastle United are said to be “ready to snap up” Crystal Palace’s highly rated 21-year-old right back, Nathaniel Clyne, according to The Mirror.

Clyne is out of contract in the summer and could walk away from Selhurst Park without a transfer fee although any deal would have to go to a tribunal to determine a level of compensation both teams would be happy with. Crystal Palace are said to be looking for around £5m in compensation, but realistically they won’t get anywhere near that.

With Danny Simpson looking increasingly likely to leave the club over the summer, reinforcements will be needed. Clyne is young, has pace and power and fits the profile of what the club are looking for so it wouldn’t surprise me if we’ve at least been looking at him.

I’m aware of him, as are a whole host of posters probably, but some won’t be which is why I’ve posted that video. His pace is on show, as are his defensive work, willingness to run and ability to pose a threat in attack.

To me it’s a no-brainer and we should seriously look at signing the lad. He has a great future in the game and can only improve as he plays at a higher level. In fact I’d say we should try and sign him regardless of what happens with Danny Simpson, Mathieu Debuchy or anyone else for that matter!

Anyone agree?

  1. Video shows not much un ghetto way of tackling which to be fair has to be his primary role esp if we are to play 433.

  2. He’s decent. Would be happy with him. Potential to be a future England star.

  3. looks very good going forward, worried that defensively he got a bit narrow and was a bit out of position on a couple of the clips but I would like to see us sign him.

  4. Grrr predictive text …. Should have read … Video shows not much in the way of tackling which to be fair has to be his primary role esp if we are to play 433.

  5. Supposed to be very good, was impressed when I saw him play against Man Utd.
Not proven though, so would he be Santon’s back up , Simmo’s back up, or cover for a new RB? Also would this spell the end for Tavernier?

      (Quote)

  6. Sign him and Debuchi then we have Santon Debuchi Clyne Travenier Shane (Raylor Perch Jonas) for fullback slot. Look good !

  7. Get him on board the CABAYE DREAM BOAT!! 😮 😮 😮 😮 😮

      (Quote)

  8. Move Santon to right. Give Shane Ferguson a proer stab at holding the left back slot next season. Raylor to back Ferguson up, just need a right back to compete with Santon then 😮

  9. He is more of an attacking fullback than a defensive fullback.

Good to bring in an attacking fullback, but if danny simpson leaves(a defensive fullback)

Do we need to get another one who is much more defensive. 😉

Since Santon is also more of an attacking fullback than a defensive one.

  10. Shamrock, I’m pretty convinced we Pardew doesn’t see Fergie as a full back

  11. I’m pretty sure Pardew will move Santon to Right back if plans to bring in any right back fail to agree a deal.

Then he will bring in a Left back instead.

    😉

  12. Sign him and Debuchy for RB, Clyne can cover for Debuchy if he’s injured, and can play in the cup & europa games. Santon can continue to play LB with Ferguson filling in during cup competitions. Reckon tavenire should be loaned out once more, this time to a championship club that’s fighting for promotion, like Cardiff or CP even.

  13. Have said for a while I would love to sign this lad, would definitely be my second-choice were we to be priced out of a move for Debuchy.

But Clyne and Santon would be brilliant, both young and exciting with huge amount of potential.

  14. Seen this lad live quite a few times and he is a very good lad but very raw at the mo. Bit like tavernier really IMO.
He is more of a winger as he has sheds of pace to burn.
Great one for the future and if he is free even better. Fits the bill for our methods in transfer market

  15. Interesting as he is always solid as you like at full back and the majority of his appearances have been there. He chips in well going forward from there too. Just as good as any new up and coming signing would be so why waste the money? He is decent on the wing but has not really caused much damage from there. Definitely a better full back in my opinion. A natural in fact. Very much like Ashley Cole. Give him the shirt I say and watch him grow! 😀

  16. I’m just going on this season tbh, whenever he has come on it’s been at left wing. Might just be because Pardew wanted experienced defenders playing at the back. not too sure.

  20. A lot of predictable comments on here, just cos he’s a small, young guy with pace everyone assumes he’s good going forward and needs to work on his defending. This is far from the truth – he is first and foremost a defender and this is how he has gained his reputation. Yes he can get forward well but one complaint earlier in the season was that he was too reserved and didn’t push forward enough considering his ability.

I’ve watched him for 3 years and he (with Speroni) has been our most consistent performer over that period. Shamrock made the comment he is similar to Ashley Cole and that’s a very accurate description – Cole was on loan at Palace and I would put them in the same bracket at that age.

Don’t expect him to be anyone’s reserve either – he’s bottled up Ashley Cole, Antonio Valencia and a couple of other Prem wingers in the last few seasons, his view will be if Rafael can play regularly at a top Prem club he certainly can!

  21. Chronicle confirming we’re playing Sporting Lisbon in Portugal this summer, be a good test!

Also saying talks to play in a tournament in South Africa are at a ‘advanced stage’.

      (Quote)

  22. The lads small and a twig with legs. I don’t think he’s got the strength to perform as a defender.

      (Quote)

  23. Clyne looks like the kind of player we would adore and Pardew would relish coaching. Young, fast, and plenty of ability!

I think the reason Simpson doesnt get a lot of credit, despite the wealth of defensive stats proving his worth, was because he’s just not that good going forward. Yes, he would leave wingers to send in a cross a lot, but aside from that Simpson is very solid at the back. Clubs would offer us more though I think

      (Quote)

  24. He looks awesome in those video’s. He always seems to score and never makes a mistake or miss a pass.. definately need to sign him 🙂 🙂

  25. Evil when has Ferguson been embarrased playing at full back? If he was. Ot strong enough he’d have been found wanting by now. My only concern with him is not strength, but stamina. He seems to run out of puff around the 70 minute mark. Whether that. E full back or wing, most probably because he puts so much effort in! If he can learn to tone it down a tad and save the high octane bursts for when it really really matters then he will be a huge player for us…

On topic, Clyne to challenge Santon for the right back slot would be great for this club over the next few years. Increased challenge will ensure they stay focused for fear of losing the shirt… 😀

  26. Well he looks good to me and we been linked to him for some time now ,so if he’s out of contract we gotta go for him I reckon. Having said that we probably got to fight off offers for him from other clubs I’d im agine.

  27. Fergie for me should get more of a chance was at his first game at stoke and he was best player even though we lost 4-0.
Think he has lot of potential too. 😉
He has to make grade next year otherwise he never will he is approaching 22 i think

  28. Loving the fact Brendan Rogers has turned Liverpool away. The way that club bleats on about its great tradition and ‘the liverpool’ way you would think they were regular league winners these days. FFS they didnt qualify for Europe last season and could not make top 6 this time around. Good to see managers dont rate liverpool as a major force that is too good to turn down anymore.
Not even Manure bleat on about themselves as much as liverpool do, and have actually won titles recently!

Maybe its because all the effing pundits Are ex liverpool? Redknapp, hansen, lawrenson, barnes, collymore… Bla bla bla. Bbc presenters need a shakeup. Out of touch dinosaurs, particularly lawrenson.

Cant stand liverpool fc. Self important underachievers considering their fan base and income.

      (Quote)

  29. Fergie is a back up mid and a part time back man when needed… can’t see him being much more than that unfortunately..

      (Quote)

  30. Shamrock@42-Fergie just needs more first team starts to play the full 90 and his stamina would improve imo. A full 90 at first team level is very different than as sub or 90 in reserves and he likes to make gut busting runs as you point out it just tires him out. If he knew he was going to get a full 90 maybe he would pace him self better rather than go hell for leather in a bid to impress .But I really like him ,been very impressed when ever I have watched him.

  31. The mirror says Dippers gonna go for Pep! ,what a joke ,how they gonna get him when even Rogers says no thanks 😳

  32. Aussie when has Fergie had a bad game for us? Give him a run and see if he can consistently produce the goods. Whats the point in having talented acady players if we dont give them a chance to win a shirt? Especially the ones who have played a fair few senior games and ALWAYS done well…

      (Quote)

  33. *academy.
Kim good point. If they let him go without giving hima fair crack of the whip then we can forget ever producing a long line of good players via our future academies- as it shows we dont have the staff to help them make the step up..

      (Quote)

  34. Agree totally Shamrock, just stating what I think will be the case. He just seems to be good at everything but not particularly great. I think this is what will hold him back.. I hope I am wrong but I can’t see him replacing any of our starting 11.

      (Quote)

  35. They have zero chance of landing Pep. Why swap Barca for them? They are on the decline. I am sure he will be taking a break as he said he would. Self important so and so’s. 😈

      (Quote)

  36. Fair enough Aussie. Still reckon given a decent run he’ll be very good. Like you say, he’s got the tools. Just needs the chance now. That lack of cutting edge you refer to is why I think he would make a great full back as opposed to a winger. Dont need to be flashy to be a great full back, just need to be consistently reliable with ability to get forward when needed. He already has all that. Just needs the game time now to fine tune it 😀

      (Quote)

  37. You tell me evil. All I know is when he has played in the first team the majority of his appearances have been as full back and has never looked out of place besides the first teamers. How many of our youth players have done that in recent years? If he’s not worth a run in the side then none of our youth players ever will be 😕

      (Quote)

  38. I think he needs a couple of kilo’s of muscle and a bit of hardness to be a specialist fullback, that could come with game time though.. be interesting to see how he goes.. I have my doubts 🙂

      (Quote)

  39. Either way guys, I reckon its this season or not at all for Fergie. Like you say Aussie, interesting to see what happens. Right im off down the skip . Laters all 😀

Opinions? I’ve decided that Ba will be sold, as will Simpson and hopefully Ranger, partially funding the transfers shown, as well as some youngsters that probably won’t get a shot next season.

  41. Probably paper talk as he’ll be linked with everyone seeing as he’s English and actually half decent, whereas almost every team still has ***** right backs 😆

Still, would be a good addition, and I’m sure dezza and mike would be well up for more court proceedings and some haggling thrown in… 😉

  42. We do need a proper full back though, even if Simmo stays imo. Raylor isn’t a full back and Perchy’s worst position seems to be right back strangely… 😕

  43. Thanks for the input Matt.

I say sign him up. At some point we’re going to add a few englishmen to comply with the home grown rule, and I like what I’ve read about this lad.

I think tavs was re-upped not too long ago. pards rates him and said something along the lines of he’s counting on him next year. Lad got a lot of experience out on loan the last 2 years.
