Amalfitano signs four-year deal at NUFC

Romain signs on
As expected, Newcastle have confirmed the signing of Romain Amalfitano on a free transfer from newly promoted French side Stade de Reims.

And as expected the signing was confirmed just after I walked out of the door to go to work, hence the slight delay in writing this as I’m now in Belgium. Anyway I digress…

The 22-year-old Frenchman will join Newcastle officially when his contract expires at the end of June meaning that he will be registered as an NUFC player on July 1st such is the nature of pre-contract agreements. The midfielder becomes the first summer signing at St James’ Park and spoke to the official club website as the news was announced.

“I am very happy to be a Newcastle player,” said Romain. “I have seen a bit of the city already and it is a change from France but one I am really looking forward to.”

“When a club like Newcastle wants you to play for them it can only be a good thing. I have taken the opportunity to play in the Premier League and cannot wait to get going.”

Amalfitano joins an ever growing French contingent on Tyneside as the club seek to extract value from the transfer market. I’ll happily admit that I know next to nothing abut the lad although he must be rated rather highly by our scouting department to warrant us making a move after spending so long in our sights.

I’m unsure what his role is going to be and whether he has been brought in as backup or whether he is here to challenge the first team but I guess time will tell. I certainly won’t be making rash decisions based on the fact that I’ve not really heard of him and he will get his chance to show me, and others I’m sure, just what he can do.

If anyone does know more about him then please feel free to share the information. I’m sure it will be welcomed with open arms!

Welcome aboard Romain Amalfitano.

Can’t help feeling the Spanish liga is overrated anyway, it’s always just the same old teams 30 points above the rest. The only draw is the skillful players and moves other than that it’s got nothing on the intrigue of the Premier League, Bundesliga and even ligue 1.

  2. Andy..not going to watch Deportivo. I’m going to watch Hercules it’s their last home game and a win will clinch a play off spot.

ST…I know what you mean, it would be nervy but I’d much rather keep him. I hate the transfer window like 👿

Aye that was the point I was making with LST yesterday, it’s all good saying when Ba leaves we’ll move for Giroud(or de Jong) but if its the last day when Ba leaves those players may already be taken and we’ll be left short till January when Cissé leaves for the ACN anyway.

Have people read nufc.com’s thoughts on Ba. Good read, agree on what verdict they’ve come to as well.

I have and fair play to them. Some good points in that article.

  5. Andy….It’s canny to watch apart from the rolling around and cheating all the time, the unfortunate thing is that the clubs can negotiate their own tv deals so RM and Barca are always going to earn way more tv money than anyone else and that’s on top of the “way more” revenue they get for everything else. You only have to look at Valencia who usually qualify for the CL, yet are still fecking skint ‘cos all their other revenue sources are ****, they have a half built new stadium that’s had no work done on it for 2 years 😯

Why is it that Valencia are so reluctant to sell there players then if they’re so skint?

      (Quote)

  7. They havn’t been that reluctant, they’ve sold Vill, Mata and Silva off the top of my head. Thing is they’ll only sell for top whack because they need to keep a decent team, if they don’t qualify for the CL they’d struggle even more so I guess that comes into their thinking. I thionk selling those players has helped them alot and they are supposed to start work again on the stadium soon, but I’ll believe that when I see it.

  8. Rumours kalou is having medical at sjp#quality signing

    MMM…. twatter strikes again

  9. How much would Kalou be on? And how much could he really demand going forward.. not sure how he would go, not keen on picking chelsea rejects

      (Quote)

  10. Another problem with getting Kalou is he’s from the ivory coast and is an international so that would mean losing him for a month and a half in January/Feb.

  11. Ice- I thought he was older too.

AMF- that’s the problem- I bet he was on a fortune. Even the waterboy is on at least 80K at Chelsea.

  13. MDS, I am not sure where all the chelsea and man city rejects are going to end up.. they will have to take some serious paycuts to be signed by other clubs..

  14. Just getting back on topic for a moment, I was interested to see that Olivier Bernard has been singing the praises of Amalfitano, and that it was reported today that “Frenchman Bernard has watched Amalfitano closely over the past two years….”

I knew that Olly still had fairly close links with the club because I’d read that he’d been acting as an interpreter for Cisse when he first arrived, but now I’m beginning to wonder if he’s also been playing a much more significant role behind the scenes (ie. scouting). Maybe it’s Olly, and not Graham Carr, who has been the key to our success in the French market place?

  15. Reading between the lines with this new RA frenchman and watching Youtube bits I reckon he’s the replacement for Gosling not Guthrie. Pardew always wanted a midfielder arriving late into the box and scoring and thought Gosling was that. Now he’s seen Gosling’s actually up to nothing he’s brought in RA.
I’d keep Guthrie but if he can’t handle being back up . . .

      (Quote)

  16. Very interesting point Chris G. Bernard can’t be making much of a living just doing the odd bit of translation and if Carr needs help in France especially delving into expiring contracts and unhappy players. Makes sense!

Agreed- they will have to take pay cuts if they ever want to play again.

Aye I went to London once and I’m still getting a thousand quid a week from Abamovich 😆

  19. Aussie, not true, they could do a Wright-Phillips and waste their career and international prospects and only move when some mediocre but filthy rich club emerge 🙄
    Some players are absolute idiots.

Like Milner, oh wait he was picked how does that work? He only got like 25 minutes playing time last season.

      (Quote)

  21. Okay, about the supposed Ba negotiations, there are absolutely no quotes in the story, so it is obviously fictional.

On Barnetta, I recall the English agent saying that NUFC’s offer was low, but then later for Barnetta’s actual agent to come out denying to know anything about him, and then saying that any deal would be dead anyway since he just got injured

      (Quote)

  22. In fairness to Milner, he played 40 games this season and started 28 whilst forging an almost telepathic understanding with Silva. Had a really good season by all accounts and was the reason for Johnson not getting game time….

I’d take Kalou BTW. Good player but we so need more quality available to us during ACON or our season will crumble badly…

      (Quote)

  23. Once a players contract is up what they got paid at Citeh are Chelsea is irrelevant, the only thing that matters is what the “new” clubs interesteded in signing them are prepared to pay and they have to accept that or get sweet fa 😉

With regards to the photo, I like the way ‘Sp**ts Dir**t’ gets precedence in the frame, over ‘Newcastle’.

  41. Seeing eds article on that kid from Hartlepool Luke James, made me think we should definately sign him up then loan him back to Hartlepool for a season, after that loan him to a Championship club for a season, then a mid-bottom PL club for a season, by the end of it he’ll be 19 have played in 3 different competitive leagues and will be ready to play for us. I know I’m not sticking to my ‘never trust anyone who’s last name is a forename’ philosophy but hell this kids got potential, and he’s a local lad (Northumberland not Perthshire).
